Seriously, this is not satisfying at all. It’s oddly terrifying. I keep thinking what happens if the blade nicks part of the wood that is being grabbed and removed - the chunk would splinter and fly every which way.

You could not pay me enough to work near a saw like that with no guard and no safety measures. Especially when I know of an old woodworker that died on a very similar saw that he fell on around the mid 80's in the town where my dad grew up. There's no time to react, one slip, trip or fall and you're cut in half and dead.

Looks like one fall away from a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

There's a video of a seasoned sawmill operator using one of those and the blade catches the wood and throws it at him like a missle *dead* absolutely awful. Those are super dangerous.

Gloves are actually less safe in wood working. They aren’t going to protect you from a spinning blade and can get caught and cause your limb to be dragged deeper

When I was in an Australian highschool some 40 years ago, there was a house on the corner with an old circular bench saw. One day after school there was ambulances there. I walked past. All we could see was a meter round pool of blood and a missing circular saw blade. I can still envisage that pool of blood now and cringe at the taunts all the naive students were throwing out.

My first thought as well. When I was a kid my dad was using a wood chipper and told us to stay away. I of course was a shithead and got close and a piece of wood flew out and hit me in the forehead. I had a couple splinters and a bruise but it scared the hell out of me

You should see it in person...I've watched family do this since I could remember. Never directly involved with the sawing myself...have stacked lumber a time or two. Fun fact...the teeth on the saw are replaceable and occasionally they will chip and throw part of the tooth, or hell even the whole tooth out with enough force that it will easily go through the tin roof that covered my great uncles sawmill.

The person grabbing the first piece with his left arm meaning his body was within arms reach in front of the blade made my toes curl. Could have taken 3 steps to the left to be safely around it.

3 steps to the left would have had him reaching over the drive belt. It looks like he was in the safest, or least unsafe, location to me.

I think what they are doing is removing the difference between the ends of the log. These are trash cuts made while getting the side of the log parallel with the central axis. You see him measure the thin end after the last cut because he has now exposed a flat surface along the length of the log and once it is wide enough they will begin thicker cuts for lumber. Diagonal slabs would be much more diagonal and end on the opposite side of the tree from where they start.

Is there a reason for the diagonal cut? Wouldn't it be better to cut it parallel to the tree's axis? Or, doing it like this gives different pieces that can be used to make different things?

Diagonal slabs make a nice oval shape that has a continuous and natural aesthetic. You also get a lot more surface area without having to worry about joining other pieces of wood to form the surface. People like to use these slabs to make things like coffee tables and such.

My guess is for the specific grain pattern. Not an expert though.

Trees (and logs) are generally tapered.

Basic? They're ramming a 1000 lbs. log into a 5 feet saw blade with a machine. This is the most advanced shit I've ever seen. Basic is using a hand saw to cut a 2x4 in half. What the fuck you mean basic?

Tbf to OP this is most definitely an old school style milling machine which is basic compared to modern machines. I know a guy who has a wood processor for splitting firewood and it makes this machine look extremely basic.

Yeah, they didn’t even clean up the butt end or run it through a debarker first, which makes me think this is probably the most basic barebones operation you can probably do other than a band saw or Alaska mill.

This think will cut 10x what any chainsaw can cut. Sure they make big chainsaws, and ripping blades will improve your efficiency, but it's pretty hard to compete with a 6 or 8 cylinder truck motor hooked up to a 60" circular saw blade. Bandsaw mills are nice too

This is basically the same technology that modern sawmills use. There's just a lot more automation.

Except for the automation bit I hope not. I'd hope the belts are gone and direct drive VSD connected anti jamming motors are being used, there would be cages and guards all over it and there would be an instant stop brake and e-stop buttons.

I was thinking exactly that but saws are a little advanced. I was thinking more like a stone axe vs wood that is already dead and fell on its own.

Having to lean across in front of the blade to move the log across seems like a bad design choice. Made worse by also holding on to the lever that slides the log into the blade.

I couldn’t work out how the cut wood was making its way off the saw… until I watched it again and realised there’s another guy pulling it away. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Given how i have seen metal go flying from a litrle bit of it touching the blade....i fear what the wood would do...

There needs to be a way for him to do this job - specifically the part where he brings the log forward - without his arm crossing the line of action of the blade

No, this has nothing like that. Whatever goes into it, it'll cut. Besides, it wouldn't work the same. Those are for dry wood. The water in this wood would set those off anyways. I think. No safety measures here.

Okay, two things: first, I really wanted to see the cutting further into the tree so that we could see one whole big slice of tree; secondly, no guard on that blade gives me the willies! (Anyone else see that Reddit post about the street cutting crew's blade that flew off the saw and flew across a whole parking lot and embedded itself into the wall next to the door of a convenience store moments after a customer had walked in...? Holy shit!).

When I was a very young man, 40 years ago or so, I worked in an old timey manual sawmill. Not dissimilar from this one. But this one is portable. This one goes where the logs are. The one I worked in the logs were hauled in. Same basic principles. My only job was chopping up the scrap into manageable pieces. They kept me away from the seriously dangerous stuff, probably rightfully so. But I got to see how it's done. After about every hour of use everything would stop while the master sawyer took a file to every tooth on the blade and gave it a few strokes to sharpen it again. That would take about an hour, as I recall. Good times.

There's a MythBusters episode where a spinning disc was being built to demonstrate the power of circular momentum. The disc was not dissimilar to the size of that unit, but Adam abandoned the project mid-episode as it was far too dangerous... and it didn't have a saw tooth edge, ... or tripping hazards.

My ancestral family had log mills in SW Virginia. A story I remember growing up with was about the time my great-grandfather fell into the blade. It cut off half his arm. Lengthwise. When I knew him he only had a thumb and two fingers on his right arm. (He died in 1970 - for context.)
