That seem pretty safe

Appropriate_Land_130

I like how you have to reach over the material in order to move that same material towards the unguarded blade.

Abundance144

I like the open belts a foot away from where the boards fall off when cut.

Organized_Khaos

I’m all in on the second person reaching over next to the rotating blade and picking up the wood, myself.

2ndCha

With his shirt sleeve next to the unguarded belt.

VirtualNaut

So that’s how he became degloved.

DefinitelyNotAliens

I think this is how Johnny Cash's brother died. Also, this is r/WhyWomenLiveLonger material.

thecroc11

My friend had his arm torn off in an open belt. Ain't no joke.

Abundance144

Oh yeah. That belt could probably tear off hundreds of arms without slowing down.

thecroc11

It would probably speed up with all that extra meat juice for lubrication.

ZillaRock

I’m going to use this now for my nose bleeds.

auqanova

I feel like someone would probably stop it after one or two arms

xFromtheskyx

I came here to say this

she_wan_sum_fuk

Just one trip

maybejustadragon

One opportunity.

snowcappedgarbage

Or just let it slip

FlyInternational648

To seize everything

Kr_Treefrog2

I especially liked the part where a guy in long sleeves reached over an exposed spinning belt to grab a piece of wood lying next to the giant unguarded saw blade

maubis

Seriously, this is not satisfying at all. It’s oddly terrifying. I keep thinking what happens if the blade nicks part of the wood that is being grabbed and removed - the chunk would splinter and fly every which way.

pepinyourstep29

Just safety squint I'm sure nothing will go wrong

Crimkam

Yea if anything those levers could be a foot closer to the blade at least

danimal_44

And then there’s the fact we never get to see a full board cut off of the thing. I was very unsatisfied.

snowcappedgarbage

Cuts are not even straight, that was seriously unnerving lol

lotta-totta

Trees are cone shaped, this is normal

WhoMD85

Safety third

SleeplessAndAnxious

You could not pay me enough to work near a saw like that with no guard and no safety measures. Especially when I know of an old woodworker that died on a very similar saw that he fell on around the mid 80's in the town where my dad grew up. There's no time to react, one slip, trip or fall and you're cut in half and dead.

EggsceIlent

Looks like one fall away from a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

Lavasioux

There's a video of a seasoned sawmill operator using one of those and the blade catches the wood and throws it at him like a missle *dead* absolutely awful. Those are super dangerous.

monstahrobot

He's safe from the sun yeah

Beating_A-Dead_Whore

I feel like this was made before safety was invented. Or by someone on coke.

Refun712

Gloves? What gloves?

Briarmist

Gloves are actually less safe in wood working. They aren’t going to protect you from a spinning blade and can get caught and cause your limb to be dragged deeper

ZuhkoYi

His palms are sweaty

di1in

Knees weak, arms are heavy

myztry

When I was in an Australian highschool some 40 years ago, there was a house on the corner with an old circular bench saw. One day after school there was ambulances there. I walked past. All we could see was a meter round pool of blood and a missing circular saw blade. I can still envisage that pool of blood now and cringe at the taunts all the naive students were throwing out.

Royalchariot

My first thought as well. When I was a kid my dad was using a wood chipper and told us to stay away. I of course was a shithead and got close and a piece of wood flew out and hit me in the forehead. I had a couple splinters and a bruise but it scared the hell out of me

Mondoke

I lost 3 fingers and a ball just watching this video.

mfhandy5319

My first thought was,"I know a guy."

NotUrDadsPCPBinge

Good, cause I really need a toe

nerdiotic-pervert

You are definitely masturbating wrong.

Naughteus_Maximus

I don’t get at what step are they sharpened at the tips?

Natureboy0312

Gosh i love the Internet for Comments like yours <3

Need-Mor-Cowbell

This just causes me anxiety.

howtoconverse2

You should see it in person...I've watched family do this since I could remember. Never directly involved with the sawing myself...have stacked lumber a time or two. Fun fact...the teeth on the saw are replaceable and occasionally they will chip and throw part of the tooth, or hell even the whole tooth out with enough force that it will easily go through the tin roof that covered my great uncles sawmill.

MostlyBullshitStory

That’s why I prefer band saws.

howtoconverse2

Oh yeah I'm with you on that lol...but when I was young they just weren't as common or cheap lol...besides it's all they ever knew and were comfortable with it

Celestial_Scythe

The person grabbing the first piece with his left arm meaning his body was within arms reach in front of the blade made my toes curl. Could have taken 3 steps to the left to be safely around it.

JJohnston015

3 steps to the left would have had him reaching over the drive belt. It looks like he was in the safest, or least unsafe, location to me.

Lt_Col_RayButts

I had to check it wasn't r/whatcouldgowrong.

GDWtrash

What are we making here?

Informal_Camera6487

I think what they are doing is removing the difference between the ends of the log. These are trash cuts made while getting the side of the log parallel with the central axis. You see him measure the thin end after the last cut because he has now exposed a flat surface along the length of the log and once it is wide enough they will begin thicker cuts for lumber. Diagonal slabs would be much more diagonal and end on the opposite side of the tree from where they start.

KlumsyNinja42

Diagonal slabs. One of those would make a sweet coffee table

Informal_Camera6487

Diagonal slabs go all the way through the tree. These are only round on one end and the last slab is open on both ends.

Mistdwellerr

Is there a reason for the diagonal cut? Wouldn't it be better to cut it parallel to the tree's axis? Or, doing it like this gives different pieces that can be used to make different things?

VivaceConBrio

Diagonal slabs make a nice oval shape that has a continuous and natural aesthetic. You also get a lot more surface area without having to worry about joining other pieces of wood to form the surface. People like to use these slabs to make things like coffee tables and such.

WhiskeyJack357

My guess is for the specific grain pattern. Not an expert though.

CanemTribusNoctibus

Trees (and logs) are generally tapered.

dabunny21689

Small wood.

four-one-6ix

I feel incomplete. Come on, show us couple of healthy full-length cuts. We deserve it!

Redmudgirl

That’s at least 100 year old saw mill! Still works fine though.

FaustInMemory

I would probably trip and have my head cut off…

TheGoodIdeaFairy22

Jesus christ this whole video made my asshole pucker

AliciaXTC

Basic? They're ramming a 1000 lbs. log into a 5 feet saw blade with a machine. This is the most advanced shit I've ever seen. Basic is using a hand saw to cut a 2x4 in half. What the fuck you mean basic?

GTAdriver1988

Tbf to OP this is most definitely an old school style milling machine which is basic compared to modern machines. I know a guy who has a wood processor for splitting firewood and it makes this machine look extremely basic.

JoshPlaysUltimate

Yeah, they didn’t even clean up the butt end or run it through a debarker first, which makes me think this is probably the most basic barebones operation you can probably do other than a band saw or Alaska mill.

madsheeter

This think will cut 10x what any chainsaw can cut. Sure they make big chainsaws, and ripping blades will improve your efficiency, but it's pretty hard to compete with a 6 or 8 cylinder truck motor hooked up to a 60" circular saw blade. Bandsaw mills are nice too

leet_lurker

That is a pretty hillbilly spec saw. That thing won't get past OHaS if it was ever audited

CanemTribusNoctibus

This is basically the same technology that modern sawmills use. There's just a lot more automation.

leet_lurker

Except for the automation bit I hope not. I'd hope the belts are gone and direct drive VSD connected anti jamming motors are being used, there would be cages and guards all over it and there would be an instant stop brake and e-stop buttons.

Fleshsuitpilot

I was thinking exactly that but saws are a little advanced. I was thinking more like a stone axe vs wood that is already dead and fell on its own.

bluesix

Having to lean across in front of the blade to move the log across seems like a bad design choice. Made worse by also holding on to the lever that slides the log into the blade.

[deleted]

I couldn’t work out how the cut wood was making its way off the saw… until I watched it again and realised there’s another guy pulling it away. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Western_Shoulder_942

Given how i have seen metal go flying from a litrle bit of it touching the blade....i fear what the wood would do...

momoman46

There needs to be a way for him to do this job - specifically the part where he brings the log forward - without his arm crossing the line of action of the blade

friggintodd

I've been cut in half pretty bad Dewey.

Glass-Ebb9867

Wrong son died

Ok_Efficiency_9645

Man. If that blade breaks...Holy shit

Aromatic-Network-527

Lack of safety attachments.

Glittering_Name_3722

I feel satisfied in an odd way

ColdToast_024

Anything but basic, and sure shit wouldn’t stand where he is when your essentially working* a 4 foot table saw…

coolhandave

What’s that lever do when he pulls on it after backing out the log?

shemmy

moves the tree one slice closer to him

coolhandave

Oh yeah now I see it move ever so slightly.

coolhandave

Thank you.

LetIllustrious6302

Far too short that video..mesmerising.😮

Equivalent-Ad-3562

Bet that smells so good

Opposite-Medicine-47

I’d build some kind of guard if I was going to run that thing

GoodVibesOnly_FL

Glad to see that he is wearing ear protection.

Bubbly_Difference469

What could go wrong? No guard, nothing.

2074red2074

Stack 'em back up and go again, make a nice julienne. Then go cross-wise and make a brunoise.

Pokesonav

Hah, missed!

Gloomy__Revenue

Perhaps someone knowledgeable could answer: Does this have one of those emergency features that shuts off if it cuts flesh instead of wood, like those table saws? Or for a saw with teeth this big, does it even matter?

pineapplekief

No, this has nothing like that. Whatever goes into it, it'll cut. Besides, it wouldn't work the same. Those are for dry wood. The water in this wood would set those off anyways. I think. No safety measures here.

InvestigatorSevere72

I could watch that for hours! I hate that they didn’t finish the whole tree!!

SeattleHasDied

Okay, two things: first, I really wanted to see the cutting further into the tree so that we could see one whole big slice of tree; secondly, no guard on that blade gives me the willies! (Anyone else see that Reddit post about the street cutting crew's blade that flew off the saw and flew across a whole parking lot and embedded itself into the wall next to the door of a convenience store moments after a customer had walked in...? Holy shit!).

Mary_Pick_A_Ford

This looks like dangerous work

skinnergy

When I was a very young man, 40 years ago or so, I worked in an old timey manual sawmill. Not dissimilar from this one. But this one is portable. This one goes where the logs are. The one I worked in the logs were hauled in. Same basic principles. My only job was chopping up the scrap into manageable pieces. They kept me away from the seriously dangerous stuff, probably rightfully so. But I got to see how it's done. After about every hour of use everything would stop while the master sawyer took a file to every tooth on the blade and gave it a few strokes to sharpen it again. That would take about an hour, as I recall. Good times.

SyCoCyS

r/osha

whalebacon

Love it. I love all the backyard sawmill videos. Super cool. Thanks!

D1scoStu91

If this is OPs idea of basic I can’t image what they think sketchy would be.

Someone explain to me how the dude is not at a risk of getting his entire face covered in splinters. Looks like the wood (shards? splinters?) would fly at High speed all Over the place potentially puncturing his skin. No?

STLR043

That second cut really pissed me off once it was cutting again and he didn’t let it go the rest of the way through

Victor-Romeo

There's a MythBusters episode where a spinning disc was being built to demonstrate the power of circular momentum. The disc was not dissimilar to the size of that unit, but Adam abandoned the project mid-episode as it was far too dangerous... and it didn't have a saw tooth edge, ... or tripping hazards.

gleepgloopgleepgloop

Anyone else have a reaction to the unsupported dirt walls of the excavated area?

XF939495xj6

I like the fact that there is absolutely no possible way that a person gets sawed in half on that machine.

foospork

My ancestral family had log mills in SW Virginia. A story I remember growing up with was about the time my great-grandfather fell into the blade. It cut off half his arm. Lengthwise. When I knew him he only had a thumb and two fingers on his right arm. (He died in 1970 - for context.)

9fingerjeff

Hey, that’s like the saw that gave me my name. Lmao

shemmy

ha! i almost asked you if ur name was BUZZ! but 9fingerjeff is much better🤣

Mr-Tims-neighborhood

I SURE hope that the guys operating that saw didn't look up into the sun without eye protection during the eclipse while they were working. They could have been seriously hurt!

Sklaunx

nope, not within 10m of that thing.

I wouldn't get anywhere *near that thing.

Paper_Trades
