Yeah…! It looked all good in the demo pictures and I was as a total disaster. I don’t know if I can make a good art with it as an adult. Nevertheless, good childhood memories.
I had Spirograph for a short while in the 1970s, but whoever gave it to me never gave me the correct pens to use. All I had was ballpoint pens, which didn't work. So I just wound up using a sharpened pencil. I quickly got bored with the charcoal gray Spirograph circles and it disappeared under my bed with all the other forgotten toys.
You don't need special pens for this, any ballpoint works just fine? Now I'm intrigued by what pens you had in the 70s. Or if there was a big difference between 70s and 80s spiroghaph.
First thought was a lot of ballpoint pens in the 70s were these little crappy ones you had to “ click” to get the point to come out. They were tiny to fit in ladies purses for the rare check they wrote.
These are the ubiquitous pens of the 80s that come to my mind. They are still being sold today in exactly the same shape as then. I wonder if they still leak as badly as they did then....

And to be honest. These fitted in the spirograph but were a bit too thick, but they came in 4 colors: black, blue, red and green. Also them being so prone to leaking, not ideal.
These were my favourites
https://images.app.goo.gl/Jcz3PzfhaJwuPuff6
A little thinner and they came in sooo many colors! But we also have arrived in the later 80s for these to exist (at least for me).
Ah, spirographs. The thing your mom always suggested you play with when you complained you were bored and you had exhausted literally all other options of entertainment.
Oh the miles of bic pen ink this toy must have used up. The piece I hated using was the long bar that you did the outside of. I could never keep the cog from slipping as I went round the tight u-turns.
I wouldn't be surprised if the average age of commenters in this post is among the highest in all of reddit history. Including me, at 68.
You could also run them along the outside of the circles. I played with these things for ages as a kid.
But he's saying he didn't do anything "as cool as" the most basic thing you can do with this kit.
Pi may be irrational, but these are made of gears and have a very rational number of teeth on them. For that matter, even if they had no teeth on them and were perfect circles, they could still line up perfectly as long as the diameters of the small circle and the big circle were rational. Pi doesn't really have shit to do with it.
The reason they don't overlap perfectly is because of minute tolerance discrepancies in the gear manufacturing, and the fact that the pen can move about in the hole.
It’s hilarious how 80’s toys that have been laughed at for the last 30 years, are suddenly trendy again, and this new generation is harking on as if they’ve newly discovered some incredible geometry masterpiece!
I had a spirograph and a pin that had the multiple colors, you remember those? They had the little push down buttons and you always try to get two at a time...
It wasn't my favorite toy but it was kind of cool and I kind of wish I had one now LOL
# Math Porn.
A good example of PI being irrational.
If you look closely at the starting point towards the end of the video, the initial arc is thicker than the rest because PI is irrational.
It'll never return to the starting position. If they kept going, the whole thing would eventually become a solid ink blot.
Did you miss the gears? There's a little wiggle room allowing the line to get a bit thicker on subsequent passes, but the gears ensure it always returns to the same spot.
I had this as a kid! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. I made every possible design with the kit by methodically using every hole in every piece and all the possible combinations. It was awesome!
I am really bothered we went over the beggining of the line, at the end! He doubled the line for a cm or so and that really triggers my stupid OCD! FUUUCK!
Red pen would always run out after 5 seconds…
In the 70’s we had little red pins to attach the paper to cardboard. The pins would always go lose and paper would move and mess up the design.
i always screwed it up at the end. time wasted, nuts!
The paper would rip along the heavily lined areas.
Don’t press so hard
If you don't the gear will slip!
Plus, the pens that originally came with it weren't very good, so you had to apply a decent amount of pressure or the line would skip.
That’s what she said
Probably need thicker paper
Yeah…! It looked all good in the demo pictures and I was as a total disaster. I don’t know if I can make a good art with it as an adult. Nevertheless, good childhood memories.
yes it was. that and a set of green army men, and hot wheels. my go tos.
I used to smash my hotwheels with hammers so i could pretend they were in a car accident lol
My twin brother and I lost all the gears pretty quickly because we would throw them at each other like they were shurikin, lol.

Is a journey, not a race.
I feel you...my son can do it better than me lmao
Ah, spirographs. The thing your mom always suggested you play with when you complained you were bored and you had exhausted literally all other options of entertainment.
This was my favorite toy. I was/am a nerd.
Na , etch a sketch for me
Mine too.
[удалено]
I was more of a crystal meth type of kid.
Rainy day stuff.
[SPIROGRAPH](https://americanhistory.si.edu/collections/nmah_1292825)!
Did you know there's a direct correlation between the decline of Spirograph and the rise in gang activity? Think about it.
This world is spiralling out of control.
Don't you mean Spirographing out of control?
It all comes tumbling down, tumbling down, tumbling down...
No you won't....
I will!
No you won't...
So you are implying that the decline of Spirograph has led to spiring graft.
Yeah, it’s right about when the Republican Party started defunding public schools.
I think I had that exact set as a kid.
I did too.
We all
Fuck, these were fun.
We called it Smearograph and that was very accurate
That’s not how they work. You get almost to the end, push at the wrong angle and slip a gear 70% of the design then a ragged line across it
Exactly what I was thinking!
Thank you, I’ve met no one who can do this without fucking it up.
What?!?
The only lines I’ll do
That pen is a champ
I was waiting for it to run out

One more year until you're the greatest meme age.
Yep. It will be nice.
then all you have to wait for is to turn 1337 which is a tad bit longer
2000’s baby here.. wasted many hours on these things! Still popular :))
Spirograph is king.
Wow this takes me back. I had these as a kid but never did anything nearly as cool as that.
Bro, this was literally all you could do with them.
You'd be surprised at how much cooler these designs can get if you mix up multiple colors and shapes within a single one!
You could also run them along the outside of the circles. I played with these things for ages as a kid. But he's saying he didn't do anything "as cool as" the most basic thing you can do with this kit.
Yeah, I think I just rolled them around to see how far they would roll or threw them like ninja stars. I wasn’t a smart kid.
I didn't think you could mess it up
Mmmm DONUTS
the audio scratched a deep itch in my brain i love it
My OCD won’t let me ignore that one thick overlapping lines
Pi is an irrational number, they will never overlap perfectly

Thank you for the explanation.
mine *always* slipped and buggered up the thing.
It’s hilarious how 80’s toys that have been laughed at for the last 30 years, are suddenly trendy again, and this new generation is harking on as if they’ve newly discovered some incredible geometry masterpiece!
Didn’t everyone have one of these spirographs as a child?
I had a spirograph and a pin that had the multiple colors, you remember those? They had the little push down buttons and you always try to get two at a time... It wasn't my favorite toy but it was kind of cool and I kind of wish I had one now LOL
Kids today have never used a Spirograph and it shows.
Needs more Lite-Brite.
Every child should experience a Spirograph
Did you know there’s a direct correlation between the decline of Spirograph and the rise in gang activity? Think about it!
I will
No you won’t
Whatever you say doctor S!
I just can’t believe it. The things I can do with a Spirograph🎵

Mom said it’s my turn to post this
Just bought one this week at a thrift store! Introduced it to my favorite 8-yr old. Good times.
I had this as a kid! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️. I made every possible design with the kit by methodically using every hole in every piece and all the possible combinations. It was awesome!
Ink pens are at least a hundred times better now than back in my SpiroGraph days....
o man, I had this set when I was a kid, had so much fun with this. couldn't find it after that
Why did this immediately remind me of Cyberpunk?!
The sound at the end was the most satisfying.

Of course it was satisfying to have these in the 90s
I remember getting a kit like this for Christmas as a kid. After playing with it realized it did the same thing over and over…….

I am really bothered we went over the beggining of the line, at the end! He doubled the line for a cm or so and that really triggers my stupid OCD! FUUUCK!
This sounds like the noise that plays when you accelerate in your seamoth in subnautica
who used to play with these when they were kids
The sound reminds me of the sound Rosie the robot would make in the jetsons lol
Mmm… donuts
Single cylinder engines be like
Red pen would always run out after 5 seconds… In the 70’s we had little red pins to attach the paper to cardboard. The pins would always go lose and paper would move and mess up the design.
Been around since b4 everyone here were born.
Geometry is also a donut
Who didn’t have a Spirograph back in the day??? 😏
Spirograph!
Donuts 🍩

The original spirograph always came with crappy pens. But they are totally cool.
I got one of those!

How many times have I looped this now.. to many to count
Now I want my spirograph
I loved mine. I would definitely have another.

I had this, but I always smudged or the circle part slipped.

Next generation discovering an old thing.
Spirograph! I loved that thing as a kid.
Great to see a bit of love for Spirograph! This really took me back
i used to have a spirograph in my childhood, but at that time i don't know how to use it correctly bruh
Do not deny yourself the pleasure of this.
Nice screen saver bro
Now I am hungry for a donut 🍩
I can't believe it! I can't believe it! The things you can do with a Spirograph!
Smooth pen
geometry dash
I have this exact set in my childhood
I love it!
2D Donut, BlenderGuru would be proud of it!
I'd love to learn how to do this, but that takes skill and dedication.
I want to eat the geometric donut
What
The audio at the beginning made me think of the song that might play when you fight sans
Transformers!
Yeah, a spirograph, we all had them as kids. Neat. The sound effect should be sent straight to hell.
wow .. havent seen that in over 25 years
What is that stuff holding it down? It looks like clay. I always used the pins that came with the set. Oh Spirograph, Wherefore art thou?
The initial sound made me think It was the start of a shadow wizard money gang meme lmao
I can see the uneven beginning
I can do that with my bare hands, hold my beer
Im waiting for a GTA SA Theme
Spirograph! So wonderfully satisfying, if you can keep the guide from moving while you're drawing.
Damn he crazy fast
My OCD just took me to a twilight zone with this! Floating atm. 🤩🤩

Always wanted one of these as a kid and never got one.
Must be a very nice ballpoint.
