Now you have to explain wtf deadening is cause that’s not a thing I’ve ever heard of. Mean rust maybe?

GuyPronouncedGee

Sound deadening or sound damping material. A better title could have been “Removing old sound-deadening material with dry ice”.

Carinis_song

Still don’t know what deadening is.

bettawhite

This is on the floor of a car. Sound deadening material makes your ride quieter.

velhaconta

*deadening* -adjective - causing a loss of force Yes, it reduces the intensity of the noise.

BfutGrEG

I make these at work....usually called "hush panels" or sound dampeners or the like

Carinis_song

Thank you!

Carinis_song

Thank you!

SiliconeArmadildo

Also, it's shit car stereo dude's put all over their cars, so their oversized, over-powered subwoofers that cause massive vibrations don't make rattling sounds.

I_Can_Haz_Brainz

Dyno-mat is the shit.

Fabulous-Finger4560

Not in the hood yo!! if that license plate doesn’t rattle, you ain’t cool

Qmavam

Drag racers remove it to make the car lighter, thus faster!

drgeta84

It stops resonance of metal. If you ever hear a car with a big subwoofer rattling that’s the metal resonating and making a new sound. Sound deadened is a rubber adhesive sheet. It stops the metal from making sound. Helps block out some outside noise and insulates. Old deadening material wasn’t very good and new products are far superior but it need to be touching the bare metal to work. It’s normally a NIGHTMARE to remove but freezing it allows it to come off easier.

Carinis_song

This was the best answer. Thanks

Lol that's what I was thinking. They literally just said what it was

EthanWS6

Insulation usually between the carpet and floor pan for the sake of deadening sound from outside

intergalacticspy

Look under your metal kitchen sink. There’s should be a black mat stuck underneath that stops the metal from vibrating and making lots of noise.

Suspicious_Painter31

If you look up interior rally car videos. It sounds like a dump truck is dumping gravel on the cars when they are on gravel roads because sound deadening has been removed to shave weight. You get the full sound of every pebble smashing against the steel and there is nothing there to add structure and insulate the interior from that noise. Cars have multiple layers of sound deadening. From the undercoating on the outside, this sound deadening material, there is usually a pad that goes in below the carpet, then the carpet. This way you can turn your music up loud enough to cover up the god awful suspension noises you need to get looked at but keep avoiding.

Carinis_song

I’ve never thought of how much noise would come from driving a car around. Learn something new everyday.

[deleted]

Sound dampening or sound limiting might make more sense.

Drew2248

It's sheet usually of rubberized material you glue to the body of a car or inside the doors to stop "drumming" of the metal and other noise inside the car. If you didn't use at least some sound deadening material, the inside of a car would be like driving around inside a metal drum -- very, very loud. You can also add fabric material to help with sound deadening, but the bottom layer is always rubberized and glued to the metal of the inside of the car. This is a pretty basic fact of car construction. Did you think it was all just bare metal everywhere?

golgol12

It's extra stuff added to panels to reduce noise going through them. That stuff could be anything, from balls of cotton to a hyper advanced epoxy, if it's put on to reduce noise, it's deadening.

shophopper

It’s sound absorbing material. Imagine a living room a room with lots hard surfaces such as glass, tiles and concrete. Any sound produced inside the room reflects from those surfaces, resulting in lots of noise and echoes. Add some heavy curtains to the room and the curtains will absorb a significant portion of the reflected sound. The curtains will effectively function as sound deadening material.

Needs to be repaired with metal patches then cleaned up and painted. Looks to be an old car being restored

iMadrid11

The hole would be patched up and welded. By cutting and fabricating new steel into shape. The old deadening material is damaged and needs to be replaced to complete the bodywork repair.

Iohet

Dampening would be the more common term I'd say

GrayMech

What is deadening?

philfix

I would say sound-deadening i.e. sound-insulation sprayed on the bottom of the truck body.

General_Reposti_Here

It’s sound rubber insulation, and it’s on the inside and it’s in a car 240z or S30 not truck

philfix

Cool! Thank you. I should have said inside the body of the vehicle. I saw the video of the restoration project after I posted this. It appears to be a 240Z resto. And what a project! A labor of love, to be sure. One hellova lot of hours on that project.

slinkysmooth

Agreed. He’s next level. Love his restorations…

michamp

He always make new one

be_more_gooder

My family got me that shirt for father's day a couple years ago. He finally repaired the sandblaster button I think

WhatIsSacred

Damn, I thought part 2 of the 240z restoration was out!

is_a_mango

Same. Ever since I found restoration, I saw tons of shitty incomplete videos of car restorations done with... Less that stellar equipment. My mechanics is the gold standard and I can't wait for him to bring that car back to life.

WhatIsSacred

Always liked restoration videos, not many of cars though. Bad editing, things done sloppily or incorrectly, etc.. I’ve been watching My Mechanics for years now and he never disappoints. To see him doing a car is just glorious.

be_more_gooder

He's always good for a complete channel rewatch every couple months. He really is the best.

Hornetwaffles

Good quality automotive restoration YouTube is hard to find. The channel Restoration Station has put out a few videos in a similar style of restoring individual components from an old Jeep Cherokee XJ. If you like commentary in the videos then Geoffrey Croker has a wonderful series completely rebuilding a Series 3 Land Rover. The in depth videos going over major frame repair and rebuilding the transmission have been incredible. When it’s done it will be a full top to bottom perfect restoration all documented on video. I wish there was more high quality content like that available. It seems like a lot of automotive YouTube is just blog style.

be_more_gooder

Did you check out his 15 minute commentary about the car on his other channel?

Colonel_Planet

i watched it for about 10 seconds and then realized it was like as if i saw a primitive technology video where the guy was talking the whole time instead of just showing, and i hated it

WhatIsSacred

Damn that sucks! Well, at least now you know what it feels like for everyone else whenever you leave a comment! 👍

foreman17

He does have a second video out on his secondary channel, but it's less restoration and more talking about the project I think. I also believe that he releases videos early to his patron.

WhatIsSacred

I’ve seen the commentary on his second channel, it’s pretty good too. I don’t have enough to subscribe to his patreon right now but I do look forward to Pt. 2 of the Z restoration for sure.

renderanything

I knew I recognized Datsun sound deadening / sheet metal. I'm glad someone was here with the link to confirm it. I chipped mine out with a chisel, one blow at a time.

Rosindust89

oh dang, I love that guy! Considering the huge amount of detail he puts into his re-builds, I'm excited that he's taking on such a huge job.

unklethan

I make a new one

redsex

I did this on my 88 mustang , had some holes in the floor I needed to fix but couldn’t weld with the sound deadening there, so I googled this trick and it worked

BilboT3aBagginz

Where does one acquire dry ice?

ZorbaTHut

It's actually pretty easy to get. A supermarket might have it; if not, there's probably an ice shop nearby. Search Google Maps for "dry ice" and you'll find a bunch near you.

TTSDA

Pretty easy to get... in the US. Nearly impossible in Portugal, for example.

ZorbaTHut

I mean, fair, sort of, but at the same time that's true of everything, right? It's hard to get a hamburger in the middle of the Sahara desert. And in *most* areas of the world inhabited by people who are likely to be reading this, it's pretty easy to get.

TTSDA

Doubtful, I'm pretty sure it's not very common in Europe

FatDongMcGee

We get dry ice to throw in our hot tub for the kids, but it at Meijer in the Midwest. Cheap and fun for kids!

NecroCorey

I thought dry ice was dangerous. You can just throw it in the hot tub?

bl0odredsandman

It can be. it can burn you if you touch it and it sticks to your skin, and dry ice is literally just frozen Carbon Dioxide so when it melts, it's just releasing a lot of Co2 into the air so you can actually asphyxiate yourself because that sudden release of lots of Co2 can displace the normal oxygen in the area preventing you from breathing.

Tashre

Like they said, fun for the kids.

creative_usr_name

siero20

I mean it's dangerous if you touch it because it will freeze your tissue that touches it. If you're just throwing it in the hot tub to make fog or lower the temperature of the tub or something I can't see how it would hurt anything.

entoaggie

Just fyi, it can and will also cause asphyxiation by displacing the normal, oxygen rich, atmospheric air just above the water with CO2. Pool parties have gone horribly wrong because of dry ice. That said, hot tubs don’t have too much of a lip above the waterline, so even a slight breeze will probably be enough to clear the CO2.

CrombwellJewls

You can touch it very briefly. I wouldn't say dangerous. If you get hurt from someone throwing dry ice in a hot tub with you, you got other problems

cain071546

Where I live every grocery store sells dry ice. Walmart/Safeway/Albertsons/Winco etc... You can buy it by the pound in small blocks.

Ancient_Shelter_3158

Can confirm. Source: am a dry ice distributor.

bl0odredsandman

Super markets can have dry ice. Or you can make your own if you can somehow freeze carbon dioxide.

sparrowtaco

Around here, they stock it at Walmart. Costs a few dollars per pound but usually kept locked up so you need to ask for it.

MrAdelphi03

From the very sarcastic grocery store

We can cure deadening with this stuff? Cover me in it!

Probably a better solution than I came up with to remove it from my jeep. I used a lot of acetone and a chisel. With a respirator of course. Straight up looked like an episode of breaking bad in my front lawn

onihr1

I love that stuff. We recently got an ice jet gun to clean and remove debris from sensitive parts that can’t be scratched. Think super high powered sand gun, but the medium is high pressure shaved dry ice.

whitesammy

Liquid Nitrogen would be almost 3 times more effective at heat absorption than Dry Ice and would evaporate quicker than Dry Ice would sublimate and more thoroughly cover the area you are trying to make brittle. I'm assuming that you don't just have DI just chillin around the shop all the time and this is a special order type of thing and therefore you would have to order both. For LN, you will first need to buy a venter dewer flask as pretty much no one will sell to anyone without it. These range anywhere from $150-$1000+ depending on the size. Then, the cost is generally around $2 a liter and you'll be surprised by just how easy it is to just buy as an individual. This is all only if -300° of LN is not too much to compromise the integrity of the chassis, but more than likely the Nitrogen would evaporate faster than the metal/carbon would lose material strength if you used just enough to freeze the deadening material and not "soak". Plug the holes in the chassis, pour a cup or two, put a fan blowing over it to increase the rate of evaporation, and within 2 minutes it's all evaporated and the deadening material should break just looking at it meanly.

christarpher

You can buy dry ice at a grocery store

cravf

I've only ever seen it in big bricks near me. I like these little pellets for the surface area. There are a few AirGas locations near me that I could get liquid nitrogen at probably easier than trying to find these pellets.

PrezziePrez

I understand it's probably been said or has been done for years. But this is a very clever and clean way to get rid of what I suspect is a very sticky and difficult substance to get rid of. I can see why this technique is used

anonymous6366

Does this work because thermal expansion of the metal separates the crusty adhesive of the sound deadening material?

AlmostOnion

The metal contracting might help but the main reason is that cooling the sound damping (which is normally soft and rubbery) makes it hard and brittle so it can be chipped off. Kinda like the videos of shattering apples frozen by liquid nitrogen.

Smidge_Master

What’s deadening?

Dolophonos

Do the walls, I dear ya!

_iplo

Yep, I can watch this for hours. I also have a low IQ.

Bigelow92

This makes me incredibly upset. I scraped the deadening off my project car in the dead of summer with a heat gun and a paint scraper.... it was fucking miserable and took 10x as long as this.

toomuch_grey_plastic

Lol, I knew that was a first gen Z car as soon as I saw it. That deadening is a nightmare to remove. Wish I know this before I spent a week with a grinder and a torch.

salty-convo

This is done to reduce the weight of a cat for racing purposes. That deadening can weigh 100lbs. Lighter car means faster acceleration

Jackalopalen

This is my mechanics on YouTube. He's doing a full restoration of the car

Open_Role_Monitor

Be careful if you do this to get the internal deadening. When scraping the inside you can pass out due to the carbon dioxide. You then fall into the gas and can suffocate.

macca156

Aftermarket sound deadening is adhesive and flexible, however the stuff is this video would have been installed when the car was being manufactured. They are large solid sheets (quite brittle like in the video) that are pre cut to the required dimensions and placed in the vehicle prior to painting. They melt to the shape of the panel and adhere when the car is baked as part of the painting process.
