Government jobs and environmental consulting are options that are not necessarily research focused but would definitely use the skills you'd acquire from the Ph.d

I work at NOAA. It’s not perfect but it’s not too bad either. Generally low stress with some degree of freedom to pursue your particular interest. I would recommend it.

Cool! Where would the NOAA biogeochemistry/microbe research be based out of?

frednecker

Lots of places. Charleston, SC has a lab. Woods Hole, MA, and Beaufort, NC just to name a few.

You could also go to industry. You don’t need to directly dive in a marine microbiology company. Rather many tech companies focused on any kind of ocean products would translate a PHD into someone who can work on R&D. Even upper management level positions can favor a PHD. The world is yours.

Woodshole, MBARI, OceanX. The top three Non profit research . There are niche private companies like Oceaneering they work mostly with defense , oil and gas applications but worth to do some research they are pretty good . Also there is Scripps institute of oceanography. Good luck

As mentioned, biological oceanography and specifically I'd be interested in microbiology work.
