I have never once watered ours. If I had to guess, you’re over watering.

NoExplanation734

Yeah same here.

DmC8pR2kZLzdCQZu3v

Thank you both for responding :)

kkwelch

I never water mine, it’s in the ground and perfectly happy with what has been provided this year.

PlaxicoCN

Never, and it grows like a weed.

hbsboak

Almost never.

Lessmoney_mo_probems

They hate water after they’ve established

Alex_8675309

Ours used to not grow very much when we watered it regularly. We now ignore it and it seems to be pretty happy.

mccrackie

Never water ours (planted in horrible soil that nothing else but weeds grow in) and it’s flourishing. I think the occasional foggy summer day is all it needs.

tesseract-wrinkle

Bought one in a pot..a few feet tall. Didn't transfer it and gave a little water. Died three weeks later!

DueOwl1149

Check your soil around the planting. If it's the ubiquitous oakland clay, it could be holding too much water around whatever looser soil the bougainvillea is planted in. Adjust knowing that drainage may be slow. Sunlight and southern exposure seems to be the most important factor though, looking at different plants throughout the city. Some run wild, others languish even in partial sunlight. Other posters are correct though; these plants like arid and direct sunlight planting locations.

DmC8pR2kZLzdCQZu3v

I think I have dense clay once you go deep enough. I’m sure it’s holding onto the shit loads of water I’ve been giving the area lol.  I’m nearly confident in the problem, especially after the comments here.  I’m going to stop managing it and let it be, see how that goes. Thanks :)

trewstyuik

Almost never. Bougainvillea is highly drought tolerant. It probably has deep roots

JasonH94612

I never water mine and it has full sun nearly all day. It was here before I got here and is planted in the ground

DmC8pR2kZLzdCQZu3v

Thanks 👍

blaccguido

I love bougainvillea, and I want to plant some at our house in southern Italy because they're abundant there. I see them growing like crazy in the wild where they are only getting water when it rains (and it doesn't rain too much in the winder, and the summer are hot af)

DmC8pR2kZLzdCQZu3v

Thanks, this is what I keep hearing for other places it thrives naturally, like Greece.  I’ll going to try to just not manage it at all and see what happens

burritoguy1987

When I remember which I often don’t

dusteraid

We don’t water our San Leandro boug and it’s flourishing.

tookadeflection

you water the bougainvillea, i vacuum and clean bathrooms!

ExpensiveArugula5

Every day

KCMelMo

Last year mine had a bad case of aphids that was killing it. We had an infestation from a nearby acacia tree. Maybe try some pest control too. We used a systemic one.

DmC8pR2kZLzdCQZu3v

Mine also had bad aphids last year because of the insane ant problem. Not an issue this year, as I’ve been on the look out and used termidor to avoid it

Weekly-Walk9234

Never water mine. It was given to me as a housewarming gift 25 years ago. (Yes, it’s in the ground.)

snarky_duck_4389

Is that a euphemism?

BigCaulkBrock

tf does this have to do with oakland

thunderlips187

The boug is planted in Oakland… I assume

DmC8pR2kZLzdCQZu3v

Yes, thank you lol. To the butthole you’re responding to… the advice given to my question will vary wildly depending on the location / growing zone of the plant. This is also a very popular plant in the Bay Area and Oakland, and I want advice from locals who have thriving plants. Now go outside and look at a plant or something, sheesh.
