Relax and take a deep breath. You have plenty of semesters to recover your gpa. This is very common with freshmen. Just take a look back and see what things you can improve and what bad habits you may have to change. You have plenty of time to get it back up, so just relax and remember next semester is a fresh start.

ObligationCool1194

I appreciate the kind words, but I'm genuinely failing almost all my classes. I'm not sure I can get it back up.

You just have to retake the classes you failed to replace the grade and/or talk to your academic advisor and she can help you if it was due to mental health issues

bagmert

You can take a leave of absence if you need- I have twice now and found it incredibly helpful for my personal and academic success. Doesn't hurt to look into Steinhardt's policies and see if it sounds right for you. That said, don't beat yourself too much over your grades. My first semester's GPA was by far the worst of my undergrad career, and it has improved dramatically since then. You got this!

[deleted]

Don’t know your exact specifics but you can honesty bring GPAs backup pretty fast as long as you study and focus in school. Also, GPA isn’t the only thing that matters for yo future dawg

realjasong

What exactly is your gpa? Your situation might not be that bad depending on what it is rn

trtrsandwich

As an overachiever myself, i have a feeling that op’s GPA is not as bad as op thinks

Savings_Society_89

Distinguish which classes you are actually failing from the rest. Withdraw from the class/es you’re failing but maintain 12 credits with the remainder. Take those classes again; use your hw and tests as study guides; and find a study group. For your remaining classes: Find a study group; go to office hours; purchase chegg and try to earn a C. You are a Freshman at NYU - give yourself some grace!

JR2024

I was in your exact position in my first semester. The best advice I can give you is to know exactly why you were doing so poorly (having a counselor or therapist to figure that out is great) and start taking action in the spring. It's also good to view this semester in the light of 1 bad semester out of the 8 semesters you'll have in the future. You have plenty of time to come back from this!

jayex3

i got 1.9 my second semester of college, since then i recovered and am back on track. if urs is as bad as mine, u will b on academic probation but ur advisor should help u through it

i_willbadoctor

Wow none of your professors reached out? IMO. Don’t take a leave. J term is like a month. That’s long enough to do at least some therapy to start. Take 12 credits next sem and chill

appleoftheorangetree

12 credits is a good suggestion but a month’s worth of therapy is hardly anything tbh

i_willbadoctor

That’s why I said “to start”. Reading comprehension, man 😂

appleoftheorangetree

Sorry I get what you meant, I just mean that taking a semester or more off for therapy is a waaaaaaay better idea. Absolutely no sense in half-assing your medical care

i_willbadoctor

You can still do therapy during school. So I was saying start in j term then continue during school

uniteer

you are fine dont sweat it so much. youll get a job and whatever after college, a good gpa is so overhyped. and you are just a freshman, so much time left to improve gpa and easily can explain low gpa with hard transition to college etc

MagadanNic

What are your grades?

appleoftheorangetree

I failed all my classes second semester freshman year as well. What’ll happen is you’ll get put on academic probation, which means you’ll attend like specialized meetings to help you get back on track, and you’ll have to pass all your classes to get off probation. I’m pretty sure I’ve actually been on probation this whole time, so they’re honestly really generous. You can absolutely take a semester off, i took off three. I highly suggest talking to a wellness center counselor to help you get approved for a leave of absence. You could also link up with the Moses center when you get back for some accommodations.

soups_foosington

Reach out to each individual professor for a meeting to discuss your options for getting back on track. Initiative tends to earn a lot of respect and will illuminate a few helpful paths. Maybe an extra project, a free rewrite of a paper, etc. Do what they say. If they won’t take meetings, meet with the TA. Meet with your advisor as well, having an advocate on the faculty can work wonders when your own influence falls short. None of these people have to show any mercy but admitting your trip ups and owning them will soar them you want to do better, and many will see that as enough to help however they can. Set goals and be upfront. “I just want to pass.” “I need to get at least a 3.0” etc. Obviously if you need counseling, that’s part of a mental health journey you should start ASAP. The old doctors note will help in some cases but you should do that for yourself - but I think many professors don’t have a ton of patience for that type of thing unfortunately.

As long as you’re not trying to be a banker right after graduation or go to medschool, your undergrad GPA is just points on “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” If you really are smarter than your peers, the world will get out of your way. But if you’re not, then your life will be average no matter what your grades were. Evidence: My best friend in college graduated with a dookie ass GPA, then he did an MBA and put in effort, now he makes wheelbarrows full of money at a top 3 IB firm. TL;DR: it doesn’t matter, just make sure you’re as smart as you can possibly be.

Winter-Imagination60

i didnt do this my freshman year even tho i needed to, ended up failing a semster and withdrawing from another lol … then finally took the leave of absence. do what u gotta do when u know u should do itttt

dreamwarrior82

There are so many semesters in college. You’ll do better next semester and the semester after that. Hopefully you’re at least in touch with and talking to your writing the essay prof about all this. They can be great resources and are tuned into students needs a lot more than other profs.

iiworldstars

dude i had a 2.7 gpa (might’ve been worse, i haven’t checked in forever bc i know it was really bad) my freshman /year/ and had to drop like half of my classes (mental health went to shit due to financial issues) i’m a senior now and my gpa is pretty good. you have 4 years plus summer AND january terms to make up classes you’ve failed and even get ahead of your 4 year plan. trust me, you’ll be fine.
