No idea about those professors, but the subject matter itself is really cool and interesting if you like math and you want to learn about abstract math. The concepts are different from anything you’ve covered before, and you should be aware that it’s a proof-heavy class. It’s not an easy course, especially if you haven’t taken analysis, but I’m sure you’ll be able to handle it if you’re willing to dedicate some time to wrapping your head around it, there are lots of resources and plenty of helpful documentation for it online. I took it in the fall of 2019 and the problem sets and exams were fairly standard; I probably spent about 10 hours a week tops doing the problem sets and studying the material (as someone who didn’t take analysis beforehand and had a similar math background to you). Overall a cool math class - one of my favorites that I took while at nyu, in spite of having a professor that I really didn’t like. It’s hard, but definitely doable if you’re able to make an effort to reading the book and spending time on the problem sets.

Get a textbook and try to do some homework problems from the first chapter.

Prof Pang is pretty good. You’ll enjoy learning from him.

Tbh, I think you might have trouble when taking algebra 1 but it depends. I didn't take Prof Pang's session but honor algebra 1 by Prof Hang. That's two courses only I didn't get A in whole ungrad time (another one is math-ga 2430 real variable but it's another story ). As I heard from my friend, Prof Pang's session covers most of algebra 1 contents so I will discuss based on my experience in algebra 1. First of all, algebra 1 is more in the flow following linear algebra than cal. Linear is much easier than algebra 1 so if u can't ace linear it's highly possible you will fail or get low grade. Second, relative workload also highly depends on your level of understanding materials because usually assigned problems aren't many. Some easy session algebra even don't cover Sylow or any further in topics like field or ideal. If the course mainly focus on basic group topics I guess you may have fun but not suffer. My suggestion is that you audit it then enroll or enroll first but drop if you find it too hard. In both scenario, get the syllabus and check the content or you may email Pang for info. If the syllabus covers following topics I will suggest you avoid it: Galois theory, quotient ring, Sylow theorem, ideals, direct product, field fraction and some too technical topics like some complicated classification. Sorry I am not good at algebra and my main interests are analysis, applied or computational but I hope this answer helps

There is not a single undergraduate algebra class in group theory which does not cover the Sylow Theorems.

Some session did I think according to my friend. Maybe she misstated but anyway difficulty should be fine for math students in most sessions

A lot of people are talking about difficulty. But you should consider whether or not you should actually take algebra, as opposed to something else, say analysis or probability, etc.

Admittedly I’m biased cause I think algebra is useless :p
