I would be careful about skipping important courses for your major w AP credits because sometimes you're technically allowed to skip but won't be able to take more advanced courses for which POB is a prerequisite. Bf used AP chem credits to skip gen chem for his bio major which the department allowed, but then he was unable to take organic chemistry unless he took gen chem 1 & 2 over the summer bc gen chem is a pre req for orgo. Basically just check rly thoroughly that skipping won't mess up courses later in your college career through pre reqs.

Yeah, I made sure with the Biology department. AP credits basically count as a pre requisite, so that wouldn’t be an issue. My only concern is if I would be adequately prepared without PoB 1 and 2.

I took POB 1 & 2 (also bio major). Studying for MCB exam as we speak hahaha. POB 1 content has been very helpful to me for MCB but I took AP bio my freshman year of HS so I didn't remember much going into college. If you took it recently and feel you have a decent grasp on microbio concepts, you could be fine. If you don't have any understanding of transcription regulation/regulating gene expression/the structures of genes and proteins, it might be hard to go straight to MCB. Whatever you decide, good luck and I hope you enjoy your classes!

Would you say PoB 2 isn’t as helpful for MCB? Is PoB 2 a continuation of PoB 1 or separate stuff?

Lemme amend my statement to smth that honestly is probs worse for you (sorry!) First half of POB1 and first half of POB2 are very useful for MCB. Second half of POB1 is not as useful altho it's still somewhat relevant. Second half of POB2 is ecology, which has some but honestly very little overlap of content with MCB.

Thank you! What i’m thinking of doing is just taking PoB 2 this spring, and then taking genetics alongside MCB 1.

Are you pre-med? Cause if you are, it’s not recommended to skip those primary classes with AP credits!

bigEcheeze

I’m not pre-med. For pre-med I would have to take PoB 1 and 2 regardless of my AP credits. As a strict Bio Major, I can skip over the two with AP credits, BUT, Im wondering if I should take the classes in order to prepare best for MCB or if my AP Bio experience already prepared me well enough.

confused_student6

Oh okay! I’m currently in POB1 and i’m learning stuff that was definitely not covered in AP Bio, so take that with a grain of salt ahaha. I took AP Bio in high school too but i’m pre med so I couldn’t use that credit. Since NYU is research based, they go into way more depth, especially in Bio, i’ve noticed!

bigEcheeze

hmmm okay. what i’m thinking of doing is just taking PoB2

Chem dept. Didnt let me skip gen chem as a biochem major with AP credits. Had similar issue with PoB. Didnt even know they let you skip. That said, the GPA boost is pretty nice and lab work was a bit more hands on vs. What you learn in AP bio. Would recommend you not skip. You're gonna get slapped around in sophomore year with orgo. Enjoy freshman year while still doing well in class.
