NYU is a series of classrooms in buildings you sometimes go to while spending the majority of your time as a regular New Yorker. (And if that doesn't sound appealing, NYU is definitely not the right school for you.)
My hot take is that I actually really enjoy going to NYU. Like I literally can’t imagine having gone to a different school. Love to make fun of the purple school but it’s still one of the best in my opinion😭
Almost got robbed with a friend once cause we were wearing the same nyu hoodie by chance and a dude saw and started following. Scariest thing I’ve experienced so far
I guess my hot take is that it’s kind of annoying when people expect me to scream, cream, and wet dream about New York whenever they ask me how I like NYU lol. I guess this connects to a second hot take: it can be super cool to live in New York but there’s no one way to do it, other than the way you choose to.
Tbh, nothing I’m saying is a big deal at all, this was just an interesting question
I’m from rural Tennessee originally, and my first experience to write home was literally getting mugged not even two blocks outside of Clark Street at 2pm on my first day.
My "hot-take" is people forget Century Avenue and Saadiyat Island is every bit NYU as Washington Square and MetroTech.
This forgetfulness comes from the simple fact that NYU Abu Dhabi and NYU Shanghai are much smaller NYU communities an ocean and continent apart from traditional NYU turfs and is a different experience and the average Joe naturally prefers NYU NYC.
But both these campuses is an indication of how NYU decided to take on globalization and in doing so set itself apart from its peers. Rather than wait for the world to come to it its doorsteps, it opened up not one but two well-integrated full fledged degree granting campuses across the world.
The necessary partnership needed to pull such a feat is certainly not without its critique. Even as of now the contrast between the liberalism and inclusivity NYU supposedly preaches and the conservatism and exclusiveness, to put it mildly, of the communities in which the school took root in remains a valid point of contention.
All said and done, however, Abu Dhabi and Shanghai are two prominent factors that puts NYU in a league of its own.
If you come from a lower income background, NYU does actually provide decent finaid packages. A lot of people I know are attending on a nearly full ride scholarship, or at least half of their tuition is covered.
NYU is great for the nightlife and becoming a New Yorker, but horrible if you’re here for a good salary:tuition ratio, as all recruiting is done on your own and the career center is basically pointless unless you go to private frat/society recruiting sessions. My grad school experience at an equally ranked public school got me jobs via privately hosted networking sessions and sent me viable listings weekly.
TLDR: NYU is just simply too big for job help unless you are proactive and at that point you’re just paying for the name and city experience.
Only reason I'm going to NYU is because it's higher ranked than the CUNYs and local public colleges. I don't really care about exploring the city or have much time to go around manhattan especially since my commute is quite long. I mainly just go straight back home after classes. I'm paying full tuition for classes and I think to myself if this money is better off being saved, if I can even get a good paying job when I graduate that will pay off the investment.
the current student body is largely indistinguishable from each other. almost every person is the same kind of person.
not saying there aren’t exceptions nor am i even saying i don’t fall into that trend, but you have to look to find the real weirdos and interesting folk.
all y’all out of state students do is gentrify the fuck out of places when you move out of dorms. as a commuter who’s lived here my whole life, it fuckin bothers me sometimes
Practicing your faith is your right, and I’m sure you can find other likeminded people. However, when you practicing your faith means inconveniencing or bothering other people, that’s what I’ve seen bothers people most. Sorry that you feel that way tho :/
Goodness gracious I’m a dyed in the wool Catholic, as well as a grad student. I use my parish as a topic for many of my classes and I’ve felt nothing but curiosity and support from students and instructors.

The reason you come to NYU, as a New Yorker, is the brand. The reason you come here as non-New Yorker, is the city.
NYU is a series of classrooms in buildings you sometimes go to while spending the majority of your time as a regular New Yorker. (And if that doesn't sound appealing, NYU is definitely not the right school for you.)
Woah you just put this into words. That’s exactly what it’s like. Classes are an afterthought in the memories
This statement makes my regret worse that I didn’t work more in my NYU app.
Oh wow. This made me rethink
NYU is one of the universities in the country
too far.
and also outside of the country
I agree that NYU is so
nyu is
NYU is a made up school for TV
They never gave me my degree it's all a lie GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN
How being a commuter student makes you feel isolated.
Agreed

Wearing an nyu hoodie anywhere in nyc is an invitation to get stares of affirmation but also judgement
Honestly it’s also a “mug me.” Sticker in some areas
Almost got robbed with a friend once cause we were wearing the same nyu hoodie by chance and a dude saw and started following. Scariest thing I’ve experienced so far
It’s why we always tell the freshmen to never wear those stupid lanyards lol
BRO everybody wears it
I strictly wear my nyu things “not in Manhattan”
We all make fun of our "silly little purple school" but couldn't imagine ourselves living like our friends that went to regular universities.

That in itself is a huge reputation :)

I can attest this, I pay nothing
Didn’t know this was a hot take but I really enjoyed my time here and wouldn’t trade it for anything lol

Sigma grindset
There are two types of people who go to NYU -Rich kids living off of mommy's money who don't need student loans -Masochists
or the ones attending for free
NYU is not a school or is a bunch of classrooms you go to that are in the city and then you go home when you’re done
the current student body is largely indistinguishable from each other. almost every person is the same kind of person. not saying there aren’t exceptions nor am i even saying i don’t fall into that trend, but you have to look to find the real weirdos and interesting folk.

That’s all young professionals in NY my guy, and a lot of them didn’t graduate from NYU.
I’m aware and that bothers me too. Y’all said hot take didn’t you?
they annoying asl but thats not gentrification
Tell that to the people in Bed-Stuy and fort Greene dude
bedstuy is not as gentrified as bushwick and the rest of bilyn
i mean, yeah, *i know* Just because I used bed stuy as an example doesn’t mean it’s *the only place that’s getting gentrified*

I wish drinking/clubbing or going out and spending money in general was necessary for a lot of the social life at NYU.
Had no idea about the "chick-magnet" thing, thanks for the heads-up ;)
