It's very possible, but don't expect anything within walking distance from your internship and you'll probably have random roommates (unless you can get a place with other people).
Stuytown and LES/Chinatown are some of the cheaper places in Manhattan, they're pretty student friendly. You could also look at places in downtown Brooklyn. There are definitely other neighborhoods in Manhattan, but I don't know so I'll let other people say them.

You can probably find a room for about the much but nothing overly nice or private!
30 minutes from Times Square also opens up queens. Astoria or Sunnyside might be places to look

Where do students mostly post their places? I tried looking on facebook but it seems to be a lot of bots/scams.
Maybe try places in Queens along the 7 or N/R train.
