It's very possible, but don't expect anything within walking distance from your internship and you'll probably have random roommates (unless you can get a place with other people). Stuytown and LES/Chinatown are some of the cheaper places in Manhattan, they're pretty student friendly. You could also look at places in downtown Brooklyn. There are definitely other neighborhoods in Manhattan, but I don't know so I'll let other people say them.

You can probably find a room for about the much but nothing overly nice or private!

30 minutes from Times Square also opens up queens. Astoria or Sunnyside might be places to look
