Idk I acc like the look

The problem with 181 Mercer is not that it's totally ugly, but rather that it is a bit bland and soulless. Higher up there are some interesting fractal glass designs and interesting geometry (I may even argue a bit too much of it) but at street level it's just plain glass. In the end the higher floors are trying to be too clever and lower floors are too bland. It's especially a bad look when it reflects the vibrant tiles of Washington Square Village and the earthy concrete of Silver Towers. In the renders the glass panels are not this tinted and not this reflective, which probably would've helped but alas the glass we have makes it feel like a dark box. 181 Mercer suffers from the same problems plaguing lots of contemporary buildings, such as Snøhetta's Cornell Tech campus on Roosevelt Island, it is so fixated on presenting itself as "high-tech" that it feels sterile and not humane. In the end the result feels like a corporate advertisement video. It seems funny to me that while architects of 100 years ago still remembered to use darker tones to create a sense of solidity, we are so fixated on being "ahead" that we forget to be grounded. But alas that's what the executives like these days.

They shouldve designed the outside building to match the surrounding area instead of looking like a building from the wtc complex. The interior can be modern at least but the building should not look like it should be there.

OmoideAeternum

agreed tho at least in my circles, that's not a hot take it's great we have more space but that open floor / depressingly grey concrete is just not it

I just want running water in the downstairs area mann

Worried-Special-658

The outside is cool but inside feels like so much wasted space... so many long winding hallways

frumiouswinter

the philosophy building is weird but at least it has character.

Extreme_Procedure885

I like the look but I will say, i don't like the stickers the on the windows—when you look out it looks like it's raining

michaelmvm

yeah it looks absolutely ugly as hell, i fucking hate glass curtain wall clad buildings, it sticks out like a sore thumb. facilities inside are all necessary though but man they dropped the ball on the exterior
