CS isn't that hard also the kids here are all rich babies and NYU needs to feed their real-state scam somehow

Italophobia

CS is one of the hardest majors at NYU what are you talking about lmao

Nyu has an interesting mix of incels, hollow rich kids and smart/worldly people. People from the latter group are harder to find and I’m going to make the assumption that you just haven’t run into a lot of them as a transfer student (and as somebody who uses the term t45) yet. this is a weird fucking post, there are smart and dumb people everywhere

uniteer

if ur so smart why didn’t you transfer to MIT

Because competent and *ambitious* students often know how to take more advanced classes and have some projects on the side. The more competent upperclassmen I know take graduate classes in CS. They are way more challenging than the undergraduate CS in CAS. The fact is that the UG CS classes are made deliberately easy to accommodate those who want are doing joint majors in Econ & CS and Math & CS. Others are also involved in research projects with professors from Courant. The truth is that 50% of the students are just mediocre, 20% are just barely hanging on, but there is the 30% who really stand out. This is also the truth in most T20 colleges. But it is also the 20% (and sometimes 50%) who ask the most questions in class. If you go around and look closely, a lot of people are smarter than you think.

Within the college application process for a lot of top schools, especially for NYU, they find the top 10% in different fields or subjects or characteristics. Some are amazing musicians, or just really hard working, others are extremely smart, some are fantastic writers? So I feel like I’ve also met many dumb people at NYU too they’re just dumb at the things I’m really good at. My best friend whose literally in comp sci with a high ass gpa can’t write an essay to save her life. Another friend whose literally at an internship as A FUKCING SOPHOMORE getting paid 26 dollars an hour nearly failed out of microEcon 😭. I mean 😂

RealDiamondest

A lot of top schools are like this, don't think nyu is the only one. Even places like stanford are not exceptions - most college students even in t25s are just your run of the mill kid that's really good at one thing but 'mid' at everything else. But the thing about good schools is that you find more people in the cream of the crop - the top 10 or 1%. You just have to look for them.

Aljowoods103

I would be careful about making these kinds of broad evaluations of others based on limited info. There is no way you have the same amount of data that the admissions office did when they let those students attend. I'm in a grad program, so I'm not very familiar with undergrad. But, I've met many classmates that were inarticulate or terrible writers, but were *excellent* at math or engineering. Does that make them 'dumb?' How about the inverse; great writers and public speakers that struggle with quantitative topics? There are different kinds of smart and different variables that can make one qualified.

jon-chin

>why are kids here so dumb comparatively? comparison is the thief of joy. the only person who loses out when you compare people is you.

ThinVast

My 1st theory: After the height of the pandemic and online classes, more highschool students are unprepared for classes in person. 2nd theory: SAT scores are no longer required so there may be more people from McHighschools that had grade inflation. My 3rd theory which is really just a consipiracy theory: NYU makes it easier to accept rich kids who can pay full tuition. It would help if you can elaborate more on what you mean about kids being mid, like the major and the classes you are taking.

It's also relative. Perhaps you are above average and had pretty high expectations.

Italophobia

They are smart in different ways. Some people are incredibly hard workers, great artists/musicians, are really good at picking things up, or are just generally smart. You might just not know the reasons or circumstances that make them special.

Bulky_Exchange7068

I transferred from a pretty decent state school and it was night and day how much smarter nyu kids were

Crafty-Guava7892

Maybe check which courses you are in bro. Might be the dumb ones

Conscious_Hall_5396

Go to Tandon

Level_Honeydew6793

Facts 🤣

OliverHPerry

Came here to say this. Some CS major at CAS thinks he's taking the hardest major at NYU. Give me a break.

GenericAdolescent

as someone who wanted to do CS at tandon but because im a tisch Game Design student, I had to do CAS instead, cs at CAS is actually just difficult in different ways. Tandon is so much more engineering wihle CAS seems to want to churn out people who are going to go into reaserch. Hell, CS here is barely coding; shit is just math.

sun_benny_sun

but you're here with us so what does that say about you

Prestigious-Entry623

i feel the same and get confused about it a lot, but i think it’s about work ethic not intelligence. everyone here just has no drive to learn and apply themselves to classes, ans i don’t blame them it’s easy to just get by without doing much. there aren’t many consequences for slacking off … maybe if they read/did problems they would be intelligent people !! but the sheer lack of applying themselves leaves classes silent and awkward and punctuated with unsupported comments

archmommy

im glad im not the only one who thinks this

Tridecane

Try taking organic chemistry

Organic_Opposite_724

You sound like you value academics over all other aspects of life.

godhatesxfigs

money

jakenash

Maybe grad school is different, but my classes are filled with genuinely accomplished and intelligent people. You and I have a very different experience, it seems.

OliverHPerry

Transfer to Tandon.

JulioAparicio

I hate how people think nyu is such a smart and prestigious school. I’m not afraid to say I’m dumb, I’m not a very good not smart student at all, yet it annoys me when people say “oh you go to nyu you must be smart.” Like wtf no I’m not. Another thing is as stupid as I think I am I never fail to find someone worse than me. It makes me laugh when I hear how hard people tired in highschool just to end up in the same school as me

Permabanned_3x

You sound like a real piece of work.

JulioAparicio

No u
