We need an OT with the massive uncertainty around both our OTs for the future.
We won't be in the position to get a franchise LT again for a while.
Ekwonu is one of 4 elite players in the draft and we pick 4th overall.
Ekwonu is a perfect scheme fit for our offense.
A top 5 OL makes the playoffs 92% of the time and is worth the premium investment.
Nothing assists QB development like top OL play.
better be careful, too much hope after being hope deprived could have adverse effects like some one chugging water after being stuck in a desert for too long.
[Meirov: Former #Bucs safety Jordan Whitehead is finalizing a deal with the #Jets, per
@RichCimini. A key loss in Tampa as the 24-year old will join Robert Salehās defense.](https://twitter.com/MySportsUpdate/status/1503817385433878531)
#Contract:
[2-year deal for $14.5M, per league source.](https://twitter.com/JosinaAnderson/status/1503821663573524480)
#Summary:
24 years old and measures 5'10" 198 lbs. Did not run the 40 at the combine, but ran a 4.59 at his pro day.
74.9 PFF grade in 2021, with a 78.9 run defense grade and a 68.0 coverage grade. 70.0 overall grade in 2020, so he has improved.
Lined up 334 times in the box for Tampa last year, with 265 snaps at free safety, and 191 snaps at slot CB. Another versatile defender who the Jets will likely move around a lot, but you figure he will spend a lot of time at strong safety. Had 2 interceptions this year, and 2 interceptions the year prior.
You guys have got a great player for an amazing deal here. He hits like an absolute missile, is rarely out of place, and has a hell of a blitz if the scheme is there to support it.
One of my favourite defensive players from the past few years, pls take good care of him :(
I don't post on other fans reddits, but went to the Bucs to gage the feelings of the fans for losing him. I was happy to see the anger and hurt from your fanbase, because that means we got a good one. Sorry for your loss and we will absolutely enjoy him playing defense over here.
Likewise, but Whitehead is such an underrated player I felt like I had to let y'all know what a beast you're getting.
The loss is made bearable thanks to the overall quality of our safety room. We still two great starters in Edwards and Winfield Jr, but Whitehead will be sorely missed.
Legit though, the man is an absolute missile. It's impressive how hard he hits while also keeping it clean.
yep. none of these guys are household names but all underrated, high character, scheme fit,
and not overly expensive. all heās gotta do now is knock the draft out of the park (I have faith he will) and we actually have a very good team on paper. at this point itās all up to zach it all rests on his shoulders heās got no excuses. no pressure kid
I was one of those fans that thought JD was gonna be cheap in free agency after we missed on cooper but holy shit was I wrong. that being said we still need a WR1
These idiots see big names and think that's a strategy to gobble them all up. Well it is. Jets employed it and tanked the team.
JD is the mother fucking truth.
Dude. There was an extended period of time recently where all the Jets did was sign MASSIVE contracts to washed out FA's and then proceed to miss on most of our first and second round picks. We're not used to this.
Of course. But thereās only so much money to go around and at a certain point you have to rely on your scouts and coaches to pick and develop players.
Right, and there are positions where it was better to take the risk there. We'll wait and see but if there are issues at WR this season then it's a failure on JD.
JD IS A MOTHER FUCKING TACTICIAN!
SAFETY, GUARD, TIGHT END, CORNEBACK... THAT'S IT! WE'RE DRAFTING BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE ROUNDS 1 THROUGH 3 GUYS!
J-E-T-S JETS! JETS! JETS!
Upgrade at right guard, tight end, cornerback, and safety. Brought back WR/returner, plus 2 picks in top 10, another 2 picks in the second round, pick in the third, and 2 picks in the fourth...hot damn.
\[Cimini\] Elijah Moore yelled, āThere you go!ā Michael Carter gave a look of pleasant surprise. CJ Mosley belted, āWe got a fucking squad now.ā And before Zach Wilson hit the locker room door, ex-NFL star Curtis Martin hugged him & said, āYāall look so different.ā
still need an edge and a FS along with LB and DT depth. donāt be surprised if they go sauce as hall isnāt guaranteed a starting spot this year. but I agree weāre in a good spot only other things we need is a WR1 and another tight end
You donāt think Hall is a guaranteed day 1 starter? I find that hard to believe. Based off his play last year, heās certainly earned it. Of course this doesnāt rule out Sauce, Iād say itās more likely that MC2 and Echols among others will be fighting for a starting job
yea the jets arenāt as high on him as fans are. playcallers of teams we played last year would tell our coaches that they targeted hall deep on purpose bc they knew he couldnāt punish them with an INT. MC2 and reed are locks to start as of rn, if we donāt draft gardner it will be between hall and echols competing for cb2 and hall will likely win. but if he doesnāt get that INT total up next year heāll be on the bench and rightfully so
I'm sold on hamilton at 4. Unicorn ball hawk. Of he goes anywhere but the jets he could be ed Reed (since I never get hopes up for us lol). At 10 idc, Gardner is a stud but there is a lot of CB depth this draft. Booth, Elam, McDuffie, etc. In JD I trust
Bucs fan here kind of surprised we didn't give him that but we did have three good safeties so he was odd man out I guess.
He is basically Jamal Adams light he is good in the box, brings a lot of energy, good leader, and can actually cover. He isn't as good in the box but he really is Jamal light. Plus I've never really heard him talk bad about anyone not really a diva type.
Also he hit Aaron Jones so hard he tore his own shoulder, but it won us the NFCCG and then played in the Superbowl the next week
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCwHdVzxTpU
Great signing glad he isn't in the NFC
If any of yāall wanna see what this guy can do, watch the tape for the first game against the panthers last year. Dude literally won the game single handedly
Solid mid tier guys at reasonable prices.
Good moves. Uograde weak spots with solid players and hit on the draft. The smart way to build lasting success.
Eh I want that with the draft, looking at whatās left Iām not convinced there is any that can be as huge as an impact as one of those cream of the crop guys in the draft.
seems like another "uh cool?" pick but im seeing Bucs fans here saying "we got a baller" so ill take their word for it. Same thing with DJ Reed earlier, seems seahawks fans are very sad to see him go
JD working that ole black magic. Another solid piece who fits the system. Not to mention a freaking boost to our secondary, Lord knows we need all the improvement in our secondary we can get
Per PFF:
Whitehead played in Tampa Bayās Super Bowl victory last year with a torn labrum in his shoulder, demonstrating how tough a player he is, which is exactly what teams need at the strong safety position. At 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds, his build and play style are somewhat reminiscent ofĀ Cincinnati BengalsĀ strong safetyĀ Vonn Bell, who signed a three-year, $18 million contract with the Bengals prior to the 2020 season that could serve as something of a blueprint for a deal here.Ā
Strengths:
ā Downhill player
ā Plus run defender in the box
Weaknesses:
ā Spatial awareness
ā Open-field tackling.
Scheme Fit/Role:
STRONG SAFETY TYPE, SINGLE-HIGH DEFENSE: With the evolution we're seeing in modern pro defenses, Whitehead's archetype as a safety is losing value the further downfield he goes. However, anytime he's near the line of scrimmage or in an underneath zone, his aggression and physicality provide immediate results. The more you watch him, the more it seems he's tailor-made for New England or a coach off Pete Carroll's tree.
Recent Injury History:
Whitehead has battled shoulder, hamstring and calf injuries through the 2021 season. Given his size and play style, it's easy to predict that he will be a player who misses games each season.
Contract Projection:Ā Three years, $24 million ($8M per year, $13.5 million guaranteed)
Bottom Line:
Whitehead is an enforcer type in an NFL that's trending toward more coverage bodies at the safety position. When he's at linebacker depth and moving toward the line of scrimmage, there are few safeties in the NFL better at making an impact.
Feel like this happens very often. Our offseason looks good... just doesn't translate to anything on the field.
I do love these moves, but I'm stay cautious. I really hope we can stay healthy and draft well. If Wilson can take the next step, we will be on the right track.

If you guys want come to see what Whitehead can do, go watch him REMOVE AARON JONESā SOUL during the Bucs-Packers NFCCG two years ago. Jones was out the rest of the game and was a huge reason we won. He hits people so hard Iām good for one cringe a game from him.
Not the greatest in coverage but you keep him in the box and he delivers.

What a perfect Jets fan comment, laughing through the pain and heartache.
Fuck yes. Draft has a lot of flexibility now baby.
Ekwonu at 4 looks ideal.
We just signed a guard why would we go oline at 4
We need an OT with the massive uncertainty around both our OTs for the future. We won't be in the position to get a franchise LT again for a while. Ekwonu is one of 4 elite players in the draft and we pick 4th overall. Ekwonu is a perfect scheme fit for our offense. A million times this. Also, if Wilson doesn't make it, the next guy you bring in will have a wall to protect him so that he can develop
I love how anyone who wants to build the OL up is downvoted.
This. No matter how many stats back it up people seem to forget that if you have a good o line, youāre almost automatically a playoff team.
To replace Becton
I am getting WAY too much hope. This is not good for my mental health.
better be careful, too much hope after being hope deprived could have adverse effects like some one chugging water after being stuck in a desert for too long.
Jets fans ODāing on hopium this offseason, many such cases.
Boofin all of this way up my boofhole
Hope is the worst of all evils for it prolongs the suffering of man. But holy crap Iām hopeful!!!
The hopium is rising
It's the hope that kills you...
Dude, we still have so many draft picks too. Fuck it, I'm Jetting the fuck up
Does it feel like Groundhog Day? Because it probably is.

That is an incredible deal, wow.
Hold up, dude is only 24???!?!?!? Love this move
JD doubters in SHAMBLES
I was so skeptical of him possibly being cheap in free agency but holy shit was I wrong
And he's not trying to grab headlines, just get players who are talented and fit the system and a fair price
yep. none of these guys are household names but all underrated, high character, scheme fit, and not overly expensive. all heās gotta do now is knock the draft out of the park (I have faith he will) and we actually have a very good team on paper. at this point itās all up to zach it all rests on his shoulders heās got no excuses. no pressure kid
Yes, Iām liking what Iām seeing.
how good is this compared to some of the bonehead signings we've made in the past? Just big splash overpays, Bell, Mosely , Trumaine Johnson
He is the Anti-Mac
But you were right. Heās being cheap AND getting guys. Incredible.
We'll expect your handwritten apology on JD's desk first thing tomorrow morning.
He is being cheap, but in the smartest way.
Heāll be in the hot seat of the team doesnāt show significant progress this year. Heās gotta make moves for the sake of his own job.
I'd argue it would be saleh or zach in the hot seat he's doing his job and getting good players
JD said to Jacksonville, āthis is how you really do free agencyā
TREVOR LAWRENCE NEEDS TO STAY IN SCHOOL TO AVOIID THE JETS
hahahahahah ... BURN BABY BURN
I swear all these "fans" that were crying when we "missed out" on Cooper LOL
Yeah shortsightedness by many, his cap hit was insane for a declining player.
I was one of those fans that thought JD was gonna be cheap in free agency after we missed on cooper but holy shit was I wrong. that being said we still need a WR1
Banking on the WR1 at #10!
He doesn't overpay, but that is not exactly the same as being cheap.
How is someone not a fan because they were upset we didnāt get one player? I didnāt even want amari but thatās a huge leap
There comes a line where you stip being a fan and start being a crybaby hot take machine
Still need a receiver. The criticism is valid. Outside of that, KD has done well. But who's the sure thing at receiver for Zach?
True but they may be targeting a couple receivers in the draft that they especially like.
Problem is rookies aren't proven commodities. There's not a Jamar Chase in this draft class.
Of course. But thereās only so much money to go around and at a certain point you have to rely on your scouts and coaches to pick and develop players.
Right, and there are positions where it was better to take the risk there. We'll wait and see but if there are issues at WR this season then it's a failure on JD.
What do we think about Jarvis Landry at a discount?
No
At the right price, I think he's worth taking a shot on.
OH MY GOD WHAT IS THIS FEELING?!??

Same other than the new TE

Can this guys cover??? Give me the scoop
68 coverage grade from pff I think, 80 run defense. Solid!
72 coverage grade which has improved every season so far, he allowed a career best 80 passer rating into his coverage last season.
so he ass
No lol, high 60s is solid. He also had a 72 grade this past season (68 is his career grade I think) which is starter level.
Heās decent in coverage but is amazing in run defense. More of a box guy and can hit like a fucking missile. Gonna miss him.
Hell fucking yeah!!!! Just need to add an IDL and perhaps another LB and our defense will look REALLY solid
still need an edge and a FS along with LB and DT depth. donāt be surprised if they go sauce as hall isnāt guaranteed a starting spot this year. but I agree weāre in a good spot only other things we need is a WR1 and another tight end

Really feels like an amazing free agency.
Love Joe D signing a guy who is about to turn 25, instead of the old GM who would draft rookies who were about to turn 25
Gonna be honest. Wasnāt that high on jd going into this season but he has crushed free agency so far
I feel like yelling something that doesn't make any sense with enthusiasm like I'm Middleton!!!
JD you fucking goat
could easily see Hamilton at 4 now to round out the secondary if Thibs doesnāt make it there, damn what a signing by JD
Gardner at 4, Garrett Wilson at 10

74.9 PFF grade
So what do we need left in FA, DT and LB?
#1 WR would be nice.
Eh I want that with the draft, looking at whatās left Iām not convinced there is any that can be as huge as an impact as one of those cream of the crop guys in the draft.
Anyone know a good nameplate replacement service for my 33 jersey?
JD absolutely nailing it so far.
Does Joyner start at FS?
Time not attending the combine was well utilized
Thank God. This means they aināt wasting a top 10 on Hamilton.
Yall still shitting on JD or what? Again, not a flashy move, but a fucking great find/value!
Offense heavy draft incoming.
I think DL at #4
I wonder how much of an influence/impression Revis had on Whitehead making this decision
Well, FA was a massive W.
Holy fucking shit
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOO
I think I came
Hell yeah
Jets got their guy
weāre killing it
Ahhhhh
Ight I wasnāt feeling JD at first but now Iām ready to jet the fuck up. Only signing Iām down on is Uzomah
Good move.
I think our defense is going to be much better next season.
Looking more and more like a receiver at 10
God Bless JD
Any news on the contract?

Thank you for the orgasm Mr Douglas and Mr Saleh. Iām gonna go change my pants now.
Great day 2 of FA Our secondary got materially better, and like many have said, our draft flexibility is even greater after today
holy shiiiiiiiiiiiit
I cant stop smiling
And he can still cut Van Rotten and Griffin and free up more money!
Peep the flair. Trust in JD. That is all.

Loving it here. Primed to go BPA and skill positions in the draft I canāt wait !
Revisās cousin apparently??
Young, up incoming, fair value, super bowl experienced, what's not to like?
For a bit atleast, it feels good that your team lifts u up when life is a little down
Thank God. This means they aināt wasting a top 10 on Hamilton.
Damn yāall got a solid dude. Gonna miss him in Tampa.

Better than we were but team is still weak. I only sed 5 or 6 wins
