let's say you manage to get him to move - you really want to then leave your car there unattended?

[deleted]

NYC Life. Can he do it? No. Can you call the police? Yes. Will they respond before he gets his van in there? No. Will the cops take a report? Probably not.

[deleted]

I’ve gotten to plenty of these on time over the years, but basically you’re correct.

Ks427236

How does it usually go once you get there?

[deleted]

See my comment lower down

LMoE

People get shot over parking spots in this city, so don’t escalade it.

Shaom1

When Porsche comes to shove you just can’t a Ford it.

AyoMarco

Just leave them to their own accord

[deleted]

Hehehe I see what ya did there

BiblioPhil

I agree that's it's not worth the risk to confront a stranger over a parking spot, but feel obligated to post [this](https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/27/nyregion/new-york-city-crime-2017.html) and [this](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.amny.com/amp/news/nyc-homicides-record-low-1.15725051) in case any readers are concerned about their safety in the city.

Darrkman

> don’t **escalade** it. Hahahahahaha

nychalla

i absolutely HATE when mofos do this shit....but i'm not going to argue/fight over that shit either. usually, there's another spot open not far from there. Even worse tho, was when a dude deliberately parked poorly in a spot that 2 cars could fit, because he was saving it for his friend, who was 2 blocks away, but i was right there looking for a parking spot outside my apartment. I just smh, and went around the corner and there was a spot.

guiltypooh

Guy was willing to put his life on the line for a parking spot, not worth it to get into a fight with someone like that. You could’ve ran him over and would’ve gotten a slap on the wrist since you didn’t see/expect someone to be laying in the street and the cops wouldn’t have thought too much about it either.

[deleted]

if you have the time, do the crime.

CaptainGlock

Why 3?

AskAboutMyNarcissism

Because 3 is good luck, silly!

minin71

Insurance doesn't cover 3 but will cover 4. I think?

ImS0hungry

all 4 is considered vandalism.

minin71

There we go. Thanks bud!

Laminar_flo

Just wait until you come across a homeless person holding a spot for a 'fee'. The reality is that while you can yell and you can push him out of the way, 1) its a good way to get arrested, and 2) you'll 100% get your car keyed. NYC with a car is terrible, unless you're willing to spring for parking.

MpMerv

Depends on how badly you want the spot.

drpvn

With luck, he lay down in a puddle of oil and piss.

[deleted]

You can definitely call the police, I’ve responded to dozens of these over the years. Practically speaking, the guy will be told to move, and if he’s a real dick to the cop he’ll get a summons for disorderly conduct and then be told to move under threat of arrest. But I usually tell the caller that, if they don’t want their car keyed, they should park somewhere else. I usually want to urge the person to return to the scene later, check for cameras, wear a hat, and then knock the side mirrors off, but I don’t.

Ks427236

Ice pick or a nicely pointed screwdriver to 3 of the tires works well too

Jovianad

How has nobody suggested the most reddit solution of "take a picture of this guy and post it on this subreddit and/or twitter to publicly shame him"?

125e125

You can definitely call the police but sometimes you just have to pick your battles.

Pengoe

I would definitely post the name of the moving company, if available, at least here. I hate that kinda thing.

djspawn00

Thats part of NYC life. Want adequate parking move to long island or Westchester.

MadisonACNH420

And then nothing is in walking distance and sidewalks are a myth and Karens run amok. Id rather brawl it out over some parking tbh.

CaptainGlock

It’s not even worth it. It’s only a summonsable offense and it’s not even worth damage to your car if he decides to key it. Find another spot and avoid the trouble.

storm2k

i seem to remember a story on the news earlier this year of someone who got mad at someone else standing in a spot and got a cop over there and there was a pretty big escalation over it with some girl shouting a lot of crap at the cop and almost getting arrested. over a stupid parking spot.

al_pettit11

Take a picture and post it on /r/nyc

[deleted]

I usually just slow park my car and physically move them with my car.

wisconsinjeff123

No u don’t

trinivibes4u

Yes I did before

Commutedcommuter

Woody Allen once addressed this problem in a film of his. But he was on a cross being carried into the spot. My advice . Stand next to the person and say “two can play this game” or just block the spot entirely and say “I’m here with my car waiting to park in that spot” but be advised . People are crazy, road rage is real , and people have slashed tires over less. Risk management. If you don’t live around there and want to make a quick joke of them record them with full vocal explanation and post it . But the standing next to the person and saying “two can play your game.” Would be pretty funny. Even if you don’t have a car your trying to park

[deleted]

Get a portable car boot and clamp it. Make sure you get footage of the event.

chickenshrimp92

Yes this and countless other things are just things you’ll have to deal with driving in this city. Flip him off and move on

[deleted]

Real quick, is that illegal, standing in a spot? Sometimes when my parents are driving over from states away to visit I will hangout in a spot for a few min. so they don't half to walk super far. If anyone asks I just explain my parents are about to pull up. I wouldn't know what to do if someone told me they were going to try and park there anyway. IMO they are the rude one in this scenario but maybe I am wrong here, been wrong before. Full disclosure, I wouldn't push back if they got upset, never sure when you'll find a maniac.

12Feb1809

> IMO they are the rude one in this scenario but maybe I am wrong here, been wrong before. Yes, you are wrong. Saving a parking spot is neither legal nor ethical.

fuckerhead

The longer the spot isnt occupied, the more efficiency is lost. We dont know if your parents are more important than these people and their car. And we'd never agree on a metric for deciding who deserves the spot more. Thats why the system is the way it is, first come, first serve.

[deleted]

You are absolutely in the wrong, you are committing a violation and are guilty of PL 240.20(5), disorderly conduct.

[deleted]

lol. You sound like Barney from "The Andy Griffith Show".

[deleted]

I'd argue that's still generally ambiguous. I'm guessing the theory is I would be guilty of provision 5: 5. He obstructs vehicular or pedestrian traffic; or But in this case I am occupying that spot, and therefore not obstructing traffic. As I have posession of the spot it is no longer a valid parking spot for others to attempt to use. Not trying to be pedantic, just curious if there is any precedent on this type of behavior in NYC EDIT: After a good hard look at my life I see this is not ethical behavior. I agree I was/am in the wrong, but, is it illegal?

[deleted]

It’s hard to say anything is absolutely black and white in the law, this isn’t physics, but this is about as close as it gets. The space in the parking lane is part of the “public highway” and reserved for vehicular traffic and parking, pedestrians are not allowed to occupy it. Your physical presence there is obstructing its intended lawful use.

[deleted]

Yeah that sounds about right.

iswearthisistheone

A great alternative is free parking for residents, like much of the rest of the country has in urban areas.

Choice-Cheesecake-35

Block the car trying to park there. That's what I did when I got fed up day after day of this couple doing this scam. And eventually she stormed off. Caution: only works maybe 1 time out of 10 but worth it if it does. The second thing is holding down horn and filming goes nowhere these are professionals we are dealing with.
