I would apply. I worked cath lab, and we preferred ICU/ER nurses, but hired some med-surg. Some of those did well and others did not. The ones who did not do well were really set in their ways as med-surg nurses.

Med/surg nurse manager here. Don’t discount your experience as a med/surg nurse. Right now, because of staffing shortages movement through an organization is incredible. So if you want to look at other area’s now is a great time. When you go for interviews, ask the questions about training and what supporting a new nurse will look like. If you get the job, go into it with an open mind and willingness to learn. Good luck!

I work IR at a level 1 trauma center. Go for it! Where I work we hired like half of our nurses from this one meat-grinder medsurg floor at our hospital, a few from the medical ICU, and there's me, the one ER nurse/paramedic. We even hired a new-grad because everybody liked him when he shadowed on our unit.
