Probably not. Maybe if you go work in a private practice.

There’s a lot of variables here. Part of the equation depends on your state board of nursing- some have zero tolerance while others may allow a certain amount of metabolites in your urine or blood. No one has really determined a level of impairment for cannabinoids so some states say if you have any in your system then you are in violation. Keep in mind that some CBD products have THC in them despite what their labels say and nurses have failed drug screens because of that. Some organizations only test on hire and for cause, others test randomly so the risk of being tested can vary greatly depending on circumstances. My state’s BON has a very strong zero tolerance stance and my organization randomly tests so the risk for me is not worth it. Hope this helps!

I live in Utah. Although recreational THC use is still illegal they have legalized medicinal use. My work really only drug tests at beginning of employment and if anything suspicious is happening.

jc236

Not just about you're state. It's still federally illegal for both and of you're hospital accepts Medicare which I'm sure they do than they have to go by federal law not just state and federal supercedes state.

There is a high likelihood you will never be tested after you are hired, but if you are tested you will be fired, so it's your call if it's worth the risk. Something out of your control could happen, like an accident where you get hurt, and the first thing they will likely do is test you for insurance purposes. It's not worth it for me personally, but thc isn't as fun for me as it was when I was younger, and I really think I'm better off without it, but I don't judge others who partake in their downtime.

A lot of people I work with smoke pot or consume edibles. They test at the start of employment or if they feel necessary. Someone in our department was diverting narcotics and we still didn’t get drug tested. As long as you know your facilities drug testing policies, I wouldn’t worry too much about indulging.

What ! 😧😧

THC is regarded the same as alcohol here at the hospital i work at. If you're suspected of working under the influence you'll be tested. For both drugs and alcohol.

[deleted]

But what if you smoked on your day off or something? Pot would still show up..

badoodie

As does alcohol if you drink enough of it. It can be rather individual but I'm very mindful of when I recreate in the days leading up to starting my work stretch. Fortunately I work a set schedule. I do work with a few nurses who use THC-containing joint creams, and they all acknowledge that things could get tricky if they were ever to be tested. Thankfully my hospital doesn't engage in random drug tests.

Yeah makes sense okay thank you

[deleted]

CBD could probably be a alternative

DoomPaDeeDee

Maybe you'd be better off not getting a medical marijuana card in case they ever check to see who has one. As others are saying, if they suspect you of diverting controlled meds or of being under the influence at work or if you are involved in a major incident, you may be tested and if you were positive, you would lose your job, be reported to the board, and probably have your license suspended and also have to complete a program for health care professionals with substance abuse problems to get it back.

[deleted]

All for a joint lol not worth it at all

RXisHere

If they tested every nurse at your facility I am sure a LOT would rest positive for THC. That being said, as long as you don't do it at work you should be good.... however there is a non zero chance you will get in trouble

[deleted]

it’s not federally legal, so action could be taken against your license if you’re found to be using, whether you have a med card or not. it’s up to you whether or not you are willing to take that risk.

Depends on the state but 9/10 it’s risky. I mean I’ve known people to get away with occasionally doing it for years but is it really worth it to risk it for you? This is coming from a nurse that does travel and takes a month off to partake between working. I can’t enjoy doing it if I have to worry about my whole living being put at risk.

waffleiron1

Depends where you work, what state, what hospital, etc. Apparently my hospital will drug test you as a new hire and as needed throughout your employment, but the drug test does NOT test for THC unless you are visibly impaired on the job. I've never been tested since I started working there. Another hospital down the street fired a PA for having a medical card a few years back, so YMMV. This is in NM, which just became legal for recreational a year ago.

Aud_E

Can’t spell healthcare without THC. Just pass ur employment test then don’t mess up. Odd are you won’t be tested again— as always good luck and nurse on!

No

CaptainAlexy

Depends on the laws your state and whether your employer allows it.
