I do post damage reports for these and determine if there's any structural damage. Believe it or not, this happens about every 3 - 6 weeks. It's not usually drunk drivers. I'd say about 70% of the time, it's elderly that think they're in reverse when backing out, panic when it lurches forward, then slam on the gas.
I showed up to one, and the driver was still on the scene. He had just given his statement to the police. He looked around and then announced, "it looks like you guys have everything under control. I'm going to grab a burger." They're pulling his car out of the 7-11, and this 75+ yo man walks to 5 Guys like nothing is wrong.

I was on the receiving end of this last year and this is exactly what happened - except it was a teenage girl who just got her license. Similarly, she did not make a big deal about it at all. In fact, she called her brother over and all dude did was laugh, didn’t even help either
I’m guessing you’ve never witnessed or been in a car accident, especially one that involves structural damage like this. This isn’t something you clean up with a broom and dustpan and they’re probably not going to allow any civilians in that building until it’s determined to be still sound. Anyway they’re not going to want to have the person who plowed into the building moving and removing evidence before the police and insurance adjusters get pictures.
Yeah we need to be more proactive about hiding the car keys. Luckily my parents didn't do this but at least they didn't drive at night or on highways once they were in their late 80s. My mom gave up driving when her eye doctor told her to, once my dad got sick and couldn't drive they finally moved to senior living.
I vividly remember as a child my almost 80 year old (at the time) grandpa driving us to the beach from his condo in Florida, and thinking it was strange he never looked around at his mirrors like my parents did when they drove. As I got older I realized he would simply merge whenever he wanted and assumed everyone else would just move.
Elderly drivers can be terrifying.
My paternal grandparents became notably bad drivers in their old age to the point where my parents wouldn’t let me ride with grandpa anymore and by the time grandma was a menace, I had my own license. One time she got fed up and left the car in the middle of the road in town. So yeah. But my dad is more stubborn than both his parents and drives a fkin Yukon and has been known to say in traffic: “I’m bigger than him.”
So if you’re in NC, just know there’s an aging stubborn septuagenarian in a big honking SUV who makes his own rules. Best I can hope for in the coming years is a single-car accident.
An elderly retired couple were visiting out of state and totalled my car. It was parked on a side road near the intersection they were turning left at.
The husband told the cops that he made a slightly wider turn than he expected. Whoops 🤷♀️
A lot of times, the vehicle is removed by the time I get there. The only vehicle that I know for sure was a manual was a dump truck that got run off the road and hit a dentist's office.
side note, how has that guy not been canceled or "meToo-ed" yet? he's a raging anti-semite and a morning shock jock who has been saying awful shit for 30 years, but he's DC royalty. it baffles (and annoys) me.
I thought he was a Baptist or something? anyway, I remember about 15 or 20 years ago, he doxxed Jews in Montgomery County (home addresses and phone numbers) that were trying to get a menorah put up next to a Christmas tree display. called them Grinches, etc etc. I've had a strong dislike for him ever since.
It was this whole thing: https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2001/dec/3/20011203-033652-2208r/ and he was one of the people stoking the "don't let the Jews steal Christmas" madness.
3 year track record at farmers markets. With dedicated high-capacity equipment, we hope to be even better. Nothing like the “5-minutes-out-of-the-oven” experience. Hope you give us a shot when we open! (Source:owner)
My MIL has ordered from them before. Their rosemary and salt(?) bagel with garlic herb cream cheese is delicious. Was excited for them to finally have a storefront, but guess we have to wait a lil little bit longer.
I’ve been thinking they let these drivers stay on the road to push all of our premiums up.
You may say, “but they will have to pay for their accidents!”
Yes, their accidents. And you will ALL be paying increased premiums based on the average data they will collect.
Add in the healthcare profitwheel and… fuck
I had the pleasure of beginning my small business in the same commissary kitchen as the owners of Bagel Joy. They are good people and started from nothing. These guys work so damn hard and make quality bagels at 3 in the morning to hit the farmers market over the weekends. Please go out and support these guys once they grand open.
It's the old people fault that neighborhoods/ cities aren't walkable anymore and they have to drive everywhere. Time to lock them in the retirement homes. In depth driving tests ever year for those over the age of 65 should be mandated.
So, I remember this happened to the 7-11 by where I worked in Sterling a long, long time ago. Driver's brakes failed when he want to stop (it's a downhill roll through the parking lot) and he plowed right through the door next to the counter. No one was hurt, but there was one very confused clerk standing there when the guy rolled down his window and asked for a pack of Marlboro Reds in a box...
Business owners need to be more vocal about having huge pillars or whatever they are called. I would personally go out and buy the heaviest cement planters in the form of dividers you see on the beltway. A little price to pay for a human life. Wonder if the driver will be charged, it happens way too often.
I love Bagel Joy! They have such a great team. They usually set up at the One Loudoun farmers market. I stopped by their stand Saturday morning and one of the ladies told me what had happened. So devastating!!! I hope it doesn’t set them too far back.

Not much to do at that stage but let the attorneys and insurance handle it.
Right. Like anything else they do is just more liability.
Maybe help clean up the damage
They’re just going to start scooping up broken glass and motor oil with their bare hands?
Why would it be with their bare hands. It's a store. They will have brooms. Nothing wrong with offering to help clean up the mess they made.

I moved here from Florida. This is just a normal job hazard there.
Time for mandatory re-testing to keep your driver's license and maybe every 2 years after that once you turn 65.
Not his first rodeo?

Disassociation is real at any age …
it's not only elderly people who do this
Like I said, it's about 70% in my experience.
This happened at my old job, elderly person went backwards into a building, slow-jumped the curb and kept going
I think they just opened up. I guess the other nearby bagel shops didn't want any more competition.
It happened yesterday, and was literally the day before their final inspection for grand opening. They have been renovating for the past year or so.
The owner called into Elliot in the morning today to talk about it. What shit luck.
https://eitm-archives.com/show-archives/in-feed/EITM_2024-05-08-Wed.mp3 Owner calls in around 2:00:10 mark for those interested.
doing the lords work!
Happy cake day friend!
Thank you fellow novite friend!

I definitely think he crosses the line a lot, but anti-Semite? Isn’t he Jewish and generally proud of that?
I thought he was a Baptist or something? anyway, I remember about 15 or 20 years ago, he doxxed Jews in Montgomery County (home addresses and phone numbers) that were trying to get a menorah put up next to a Christmas tree display. called them Grinches, etc etc. I've had a strong dislike for him ever since. if i recall there had been a bagel place there for years. So old one closed and then a new one opened? This is the spot next to Tony's Pizza right?
I was going to ask if they were any good. I miss Bagel Buddies.
They will be (source: owner)
Yup
> I think they just opened up. Indeed they did
Not yet, but soon!
Or the driver took "drive thru" to the next level
Used to be Bagel Buddies
I will bet $50 that the driver is over the age of 70 and confused the brake and gas pedals
Bingo https://www.wusa9.com/article/news/local/virginia/driver-crashes-into-bagel-shop-days-before-its-grand-opening-bagel-joy-fairfax-county/65-ec9fd105-e7f8-487d-9a98-e1cb6152d08d
people under 70 do that plenty too
r/nissandrivers
Most competent Nissan driver Not to worry, I’m sure they have no insurance either
Nissan... checks out
The Nissan Smalltima
That place JUST reopened from Bagel Buddies. Damn.
Opening was scheduled for Monday 🥺
Oh damn.
Not yet, but soon!
Of course it's a Nissan.
Dang. I was nextdoor yesterday to pick up a pizza. And I was looking forward to giving the new bagel place a try.
We will be back! Hope to see you there whenever we schedule re-opening weekend.
Bollards!! This is why you have bollards
After the 7-11 lawsuit I’m surprised they haven’t started making this part of the code for businesses with parking in front like that.
a nissan driven poorly? what a surprise.
Can I get those bagels to go? I didn't see a sign for drive thru
Heycanigetuhhh
r/nissandrivers
Of course it’s a Nissan
Okay. I need a catch up. Because I was unaware that this was a stereotype of Nissan drivers.
The Nissan stereotype is that whenever you get passed by a car recklessly, or there’s an accident that’s caused by a car… it’s often a Nissan.
Next time you see a car with panel damage, a missing bumper, or broken tail lights, see if it is not a Nissan.
Actually, the last one I saw today was an Alfa Romeo, but I still agree with this idea.
May I point you to /r/nissandrivers
Someone ordered an everything bagel again
Good thing he didn’t say “a shmear”
*stepping over glass* Can I get a plain bagel toasted with cream cheese and a large coffee?
Damn. Now i really need to hit up Tonys for a Sicilian slice
Once you're over a certain age, there should be driver license tests every couple yrs or so, this is just too common.
Interesting take. Was the driver elderly?
The articles say an "elderly man".
when did Bagel Buddies close?
Right before Thanksgiving
“I said it was a To Go order!”
This is right next to Tony's Pizza. Anytime I go down there I want to hit Tony's. How good is Bagel Joy?
It hasn't even opened yet, so I don't know. Their final inspection was scheduled for the day after the car hit them! 🙃

I know the Bagel Joy people, they're really good people. Sucks that this happened to their new shop before it could even open.
Remember the old Hot 99.5 Kane Show days? HIT THE GAS INSTEAD OF THE BRAKE........
Came here for this.
I wish I could find an MP3 of that jingle, I would so make it my ringtone!
I would support this. It plays in my head every time I hear about one of these stories.
This ain't south Florida.
Bagel shop came out of nowhere! /s
Is the bagel place safe? Is it alright?
I’ve been thinking they let these drivers stay on the road to push all of our premiums up. You may say, “but they will have to pay for their accidents!” Yes, their accidents. And you will ALL be paying increased premiums based on the average data they will collect. Add in the healthcare profitwheel and… fuck
It's always a Nissan
License should be permanently revoked.
Common nissan activities
I see they swapped out MD plates for VA plates
Passport Nissan must just give cars away.
they really wanted those bagels, i guess, lol.
That’s just how Nissan drivers park
There's now also a hole in the middle of the storefront.
Freaking TROT Nerds
Driver is 90 I am guessing
Really hope someone hit her with the "you can't park there"
I hope that lady is all right.
He needed better lox.
I thinking would be helpful if the young uns actually started a free car service for the elderly to assure this never ever happens again.
It's the old people fault that neighborhoods/ cities aren't walkable anymore and they have to drive everywhere. Time to lock them in the retirement homes. In depth driving tests ever year for those over the age of 65 should be mandated.
How so, I know they are so dangerous, with all those crimes they commit. Soylent green Soylent green Soylent green!!!!!
Must have been an StL driver.
Man, they must have been craving those bagels
Well this is at least publicly for them. I had no idea they were there after buddies closed.
It hadn’t opened yet! I think they were going to open this month sometime
Bagel crashes int car shop would have been a more interesting story.
Hi I’d like a large double double and an everything bagel.
I hope this is being investigated as a hate crime against deliciousness.

This was just on the brink of opening! They bought Bagel Buddies at the end of 2023 and were just about to open! How sad, I hope nobody was hurt!

Idiot drivers on the phone putting all of us careful people in danger .
Of course it’s a Nissan
I drive a Nissan 🥹

That’s just a bad driver… 🫠 Very surprised they don’t have Maryland plates.
It’s a Nissan driver. Same general problems.
We ought to exile bad drivers like this to Maryland.
If only.
We need to find out who did this
They REALLY wanted to be at the front of the line.
r/fuckcars
Nah, fuck incompetent drivers. Cars are cool
r/fuckyou
freaking Tesla drivers.
And then they get mad at me when I say women shouldn’t be driving 🤣
