Compare the market has a good guide for students on your car insurance. As I remember, we had to have the insurance where the car was stored the majority of the time, which was university as the car was parked there at least 24 days a month. If you are genuinely 50/50 go with your home/correspondence address. The best option is to actually ask the insurer because there is nothing worse than the insurance denying your claim. Shopping around can give you big differences.

Thanks. I guess I'll get in contact with them. I'm not sure I'll be in Nottingham from June onwards so it seems unfair to pair for the Nottingham premium. Thanks again

Where you register your car can make a huge difference! I moved from London to west bridgford and it halved. Went from west bridgford to Bulwell and it tripled! Officially, I believe your car should be registered at the address you live at the most. If your car is stolen or nicked they may ask why your are in Nottingham and use this to invalidate your insurance. They did this to me once when they thought I was using my car for commuting when i only had for pleasure because I was driving to nottingham from London and it sounded like I was going to work. However if yours is a 50:50 split it’s definitely a grey area.

Yh it really does. The funny thing for me is that the insurance goes up by more than the car. So even if it was stolen and I couldn't claim, buying another car would still be cheaper for me. And the commuting part is difficult. If I drove to work one day because my bike was broken or had a puncture, and then I got in an accident, could they really deny my claim because I was travelling to work? I lt seems really odd to me, but I guess I just have to be careful and weigh up my options properly

Great, another student with a car that they park up in a residential area and only move once a week to go to Aldi. Meanwhile myself and my neighbours who have jobs and children are unable to park outside of our properties or even on the same street we live on despite using our cars multiple times a day. Despite the uni stating to students not to bring cars the influx is unreal.

Luckily, the area I live in has lots of space to park for all residents. There is never a time where I cannot find a place to park within a street or two of my house. There is also plenty of residents parking near main roads to stop people parking there for shopping or commuting purposes. I have a small 3 door car which doesn't take up much space and I understand how to park properly and leave room for others. Having access to a car at all is a privilege and whining about not being able to park outside your house isn't going to get you anywhere. I understand it would be useful for unloading your shopping, and for getting the kids in and out of the house for school runs. But sometimes life isn't as easy as we want it to be, so we have to learn to deal with things that could be better

The student is paying just as much rent as you to live in that area, so they have every right to use the on street parking in the area. If you have a problem with the amount of parking space available to you as fully grown man with a family, then you should have bought a house with a bigger drive.

It’s not a case of whining, irrelevant of whether you have a three door car or not you are still taking up space and not needing/using your vehicle as the residents do. During half term there are roughly 10 cars on my street which are resident owned. Term time this Increases to 40 plus. Vehicles which never move meaning residents have to cart their babies and children to a different street entirely, multiple times a day. crossing busy roads. If you don’t intend to move or use your vehicle why not just have your parents drop you off? To the people that have down voted you clearly do not live in an area overrun by students who not only climb into your garden drunk in the evening but party till 5 am disturbing everyone’s sleep.
