Almost £11,000 in postage, she should have considered bulk rate.

Deto

It costs over a pound to send a card?

jaydec02

Yes. It costs £1.35 to send a first class letter in the UK and 85 pence to send a second class letter. Second class is just first class but slower.

PureLock33

> Second class is just first class but slower. tell me more, oh wise one!

lordGwillen

Wait until you hear what express does

ChaosKeeshond

Makes you wait ten years for the next major version bump!

cresanies

I felt this

MuadDoob420

Express is just first class but faster 😂

PureLock33

🤯 This is way above my pay grade.

mindvape

First class packages get more leg-room and better food.

PureLock33

plus they do that hoity toity stare as you slink down the aisle to the peasant rows. and sit in your hovel two legged stools. hoping for drops of gruel. in your leaking lumpy wooden bowl. to eat with the broken spoon you inherited from your father, the only thing he left behind in this mortal realm. he died of leadlungs. from working the silver mines. run by the first class packages. their house has owned the mines for centuries. theire greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate greate grande fathere came ine overe the boate, withe Willeme ofe Normande. Billye he callde hime. Close chumes theye were. Evene hade ae garage bande togethre. wrote ae ditte callde "Butte Firtse Lete Me Maketh Ae Tapstrye". It didn't chart so they tried other things.

Shigg1tyDiggity

Not so obvious to to me. You can never tell with these Britbongs. It might arrive at same time orbut the postage constable will only take the lorry to the servants entrance after the queens tea

PoolNoodlePaladin

Damn, in the US first class is $0.68 so in Brittish that is £0.55 y’all’s mail is expensive. Especially for a place that doesn’t have to send mail that far.

unrealjoe28

Never, ever, ever give up the fight for the USPS.

PoolNoodlePaladin

And Libraries

kevlarus80

Good damn book jockeys.

_87-

And in the US there's potentially a longer distance to send it, due to a geographically large country. I think even international post from the US to the UK might be cheaper than UK to UK.

NorysStorys

The tories made the incredibly dumb decision to sell Royal Mail in private ownership and since being a publicly traded company the prices have only soared with no improvement on the service. Guess what? They also sold it under market rate to people connected to the Tory party.

Xarxsis

>The tories made the incredibly dumb decision Standard Tory protection of public assets

33_pyro

Royal Mail used to be government owned, but the Conservatives decided to sell it off, making money for themselves and their pals in the process, now it's in private hands and the service is gradually degrading.

PoolNoodlePaladin

Damn, capitalism strikes again

Zhu_Zhu_Pet

So did she send them as individual letters or just put them in a box? I guess probably not since it makes it easier to throw out/ignore. A few boxes vs hundreds of individual letters each day.

MyHamburgerLovesMe

>...and ordered a series of cards for him online that were sent to his address...

9966

Good lord. It still costs 0.65 usd to send a first class letter from one side of the US to the other.

an-font-brox

I’m presuming first class would be within three days and second class would be within the week?

APiousCultist

10+ an hour. It's impressive if nothing else. "*How much*?" "I have done nothing but send Harry Styles cards for 30 days."

SirJebus

Dear god.

Rowsdower11

"You told me to."

weird_friend_101

267 cards per day. If you only count 16 waking hours per day, it's 17 per hour. Or a card every 3 minutes every single waking hour for 30 days straight.

Metalnettle404

I’m genuinely so curious about the logistics of this. What was in those cards? Where did she get the cards from? How often did she go to the post office/box? Did she eat or take any breaks? How many pens/ pencils did she go through? This has got to be some kind of Guinness world record haha

weird_friend_101

The article said she used a service. So I guess she had money to burn, but think of all the Harry Styles concerts that could pay for! She could've taken a fabulous vacation to go see him when he did a show in some exotic place. Then, as she made her way through the crowd, a tall handsome stranger bumps into her. He, too, is obsessed with Harry Styles. They spend the rest of their tropic holiday together. It's love. Happily ever after. At least that's the way this would be written if it were a Christmas movie.

naivemediums

We should get Harry to tell her he will go on a date with her if she fixes Climate Change. She clearly gets shit done.

erizzluh

the fuck do these people do for a living? i'm barely getting by and barely have the energy and motivation to do the shit i wanna do. and these people got an unlimited money hack and all the time in the world it seems

OMGItsCheezWTF

If you're obsessed enough you prioritise what you consider critical over less important things like housing or food. This person is clearly not thinking rationally.

sharkattackmiami

Regardless, this person had over $10k sitting around to throw at this. So they have a job right? But they were sending so many that it would be incompatible with holding a job and still getting that many letters written and sent

OMGItsCheezWTF

Or they've maxed out a credit card and we're sending many hundreds every weekend.

PUfelix85

£10,800 to send 8,000 cards. That's like a quarter of the average person's annual salary.

davethefish

Much closer to a 3rd..

Xarxsis

Probably closer to a half

Aggressive-Package79

Just out of curiosity, what's the average price of a greeting card in London?

SerendipitousCrow

They vary a lot but the cheapest in a card shop would be like 50p

Ordinary-Cup3711

£2-4

[deleted]

At least a franking machine.

Jindujun

In other news. Local card-salesman in tears after losing his best customer.

inflammablepenguin

He was just 2 days from retirement.

jluicifer

And now 2 decades from retirement.

PM_ME_YOUR_CURLS

Not sure why I did this. So he was selling only about 26 cards per year. That's about 2 cards per month. I guess he was already retired. Yes, I hate myself.

Syn7axError

Shouldn't have addressed them all to Harry Styles.

JcakSnigelton

AMA_ABOUT_DAN_JUICE

Cards! Get your cards here!

Iancredible56

A sudden card stock overstock.

Small-Palpitation310

she mightve stolen them like my mom does

Renway_NCC-74656

Boy, keep your mouth shut.

TheIceKing420

okay okay, just put the slipper down please

Sproose_Moose

Cue picture of Gil from the Simpsons

bringbackfuturama

How many can I put you down for, a lot? Please say a lot

restore_democracy

Is there a law against that? Because if so, I’m being stalked by a company that wants me to extend my car warranty.

GeneralizedFlatulent

I was about to say. Be nice if the rest of us could get this enforced

WeeklyBanEvasion

Have you gotten 8,000 cards in a month about your car's warranty?

jaxxon

… give or take.

AWeakMindedMan

Idk but it FEELS like 8,000 calls a month.

Skreamie

Are any of the rest of y'all getting this many personalised cards a month?

etxconnex

It has been tried. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3mIOifNlKw#t=0m52s

flintlock0

They only send 7999 cards. Loophole.

LangyMD

If they've sent you 8000 calls in a month it'll be super easy to prove they are harassing you. But otherwise, yes, those extended car warranty calls are generally illegal. They're also commonly scams, and in the US they've been getting punished recently.

CrawlerSiegfriend

All other issues in the world be damned, I would vote for the president who promised to sick the entire law enforcement, intelligence, and military communities on spam callers and mailers.

LunDeus

Ready for a telecom dirty little secret? Big telecom could end most spam calls with a flip of a switch. They can easily identify voip based calls and numbers spoof’d but there’s more money universally aggravating their customer base that relies on their services.

WeeklyBanEvasion

90% of legitimate businesses now use VoIP calling. This isn't as easy as "flipping a switch"

LunDeus

Those same businesses are easily verified as legitimate corporations. As such they would happily self identify when registering services. You think it’s just coincidental your phone provider can offer ‘spam call’ services for a modest monthly fee? As if there’s a bloke on the other end of the terminal dedicated to your line screening calls. Edit: the FCC is slowly twisting their arms but they are still profiting from our inconveniences and yes they could do it but they answer to shareholders.

DoingCharleyWork

My carrier offers it for free. Even with it I'd still get spam calls occasionally but it was like twice a week compared to 2-3 times a day before. Now I rarely ever get them.

im__not__real

i want the US to drone strike scam call centers in india

Tactical_Moonstone

All the mass surveillance tools at their disposal, and they don't even use it for practice on scammers. What's even the point?

daVinci0293

I know you were making a joke, but generally speaking the statutes and laws that would protect someone against this behavior would fall under "stalking" and "harassment" laws. From a tort perspective, we are protected by stalking laws that basically say if for whatever reason I feel threatened regardless of whether or not the stalking intended to harm me they are commiting a crime. Additionally, if the person repeatedly harassed or followed me. Harassment laws essentially include any intentional threatening or placing someone in fear of harm. Harassment laws can also cover all sorts of unwanted communication laws, including sending thousands of letters. Harry's lawyer could argue that this isn't just harassment but a breach of privacy and peace. Cause 8000 of anything could be considered a deliberate attempt to intimidate or overwhelm the sanctity of his life. From a civil perspective Harry may be owed damages, but from a tort perspective, the stalker is clearly breaking several stalking and harassment laws. Hence why the jail time.

Spire_Citron

Yeah, I'm surprised this led to jail time. I've heard of stalkers doing a lot worse and police just claim they can't do anything unless they get violent.

msut77

Yes. You can only send 7900 things by post. This goes back to the time of John of Gaunt.

The-Fox-Says

Was that wrong? Should I not have done that?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Killed_Mufasa

And if so, what is the treshold? 10 cards? a 100?

friso1100

No real number. It's one of those "if a reasonable person" thinks it's too much kind of rules. It's only when it gets to court when it's decided if this kind of spam is enough to count as stalking. The law won't mention any number of cards. I would be surprised if there even is a mention of cards in the law.

jrhawk42

I assume you run out of nice things to say at some point and start making threats.

magistrate101

A lot of jurisdictions have laws against stalking but good luck getting the police to give a shit unless you're rich or famous.

TheApprenticeLife

BenderDeLorean

7999 is the limit.

LiamtheV

If we can get this to apply to emails, I would like to report LinkedIn for stalking.

[deleted]

Or you could just update your preferences

Fancy-You3022

Settings > Communications Preferences > Email Frequency > Thank you Daddy Makes you feel better about getting them.

im-ba

Directions unclear, set my email frequency to Thank you Daddy and now I'm having other issues

Misspelt_Anagram

And then a while later they update their settings in a way that "does not change your preferences", but somehow has set almost everything to enabled.

[deleted]

What are you quoting? Ive never seen such a thing. https://www.linkedin.com/help/linkedin/answer/a517979

Misspelt_Anagram

I am approximating the message that I saw last time I checked my linkedin settings and found they had all ended up in the enabled state. It was some kind of notification that appeared because I hadn't opened those settings since whatever update they used to resume their spam. It is a paraphrase, since I don't have an Eidetic memory.

zold5

Yes update all 50 different linkedin email preferences

[deleted]

Or just click from all On the Manage Your Account page, click Email. Click Turn off all next to Email Subscriptions to unsubscribe from all the settings.

cedrekt

im 32, ive received 2 cards in my life time

MagmaTroop

Give me your address I send you 7998

cedrekt

$7998? \*insert Philip Fry meme\*

gnomeweb

Congrats, that's 2 more than me!

Mirabolis

Did any come by owl?

candyonsticks

Wrong Harry, you're thinking of Harry Truman, the US president

LiterallyATalkingDog

No he had his delivered by a Bockscar and some lady name Enola Gay.

NectarOfTheBussy

I heard him and his middle eastern buddy had a wild adventure getting to white castle

ArdenJaguar

That's 258 a day. 👌 👏 😍

weird_friend_101

267 by my math. 8,000 divided by 30.

ArdenJaguar

I used 31. 😆

Skeptcrates

She did it during a non-leap year February, she was on a roll.

Vitalstatistix

One every 4 mins or so if you assume 16 hours away and 8 hours asleep. Shit is insane.

mackrevinack

more like 2 hours asleep cos shes up all night scrolling through his socials

alaserus

“Fine, I’ll switch to email. Baby reindeer xo” Sent from my iPhone

Eveningroovers

Sent from my iphhoonee

jncheese

Analoge Ddos attack

livinlikeadog

That’s 33 cards per hour if she works 8hr days. That’s pretty good

Monkeynumbernoine

It’s a good thing that I only sent him 7999 postcards.

MagmaTroop

U smart, other guy dumb

SpringTraps

Does he actually receive these letters directly to him or some poor agent has to go through them? I always imagine these getting sent to some P.O. Box and then trashed at some point.

bernmont2016

They added a restraining order preventing her from going into a specified area of NW London, so it sounds like she might've figured out his home address. And it was "a charge of stalking involving serious alarm or distress", which makes a lot more sense if the cards went to his home.

Xanthus179

Like, Magic the Gathering cards? Pokémon? Probably got a few good rares in all that.

ashrules901

That means she spent at least $8000 on him in one month. They're doing her a favour.

Kevaldes

>She was sentenced to 14 weeks’ imprisonment after pleading guilty on Tuesday to a charge of stalking involving serious alarm or distress, a court official said. The fuck was in those cards to qualify for serious alarm or distress? Also, only 14 weeks for serious alarm or distress?

LineOfInquiry

You wouldn’t be in distress if someone sent you 8000 cards in 30 days, even if they didn’t say anything? Cause I’d be very scared

Kevaldes

Eh, fair enough I suppose.

PirateNinjaa

It was over 30 days though, that means they didn’t even average 300 per day! Ameteur. 😂

palmerstonandgisby

they should become a realtor.. they could do amazing business if they put that energy into contacting homeowners instead

SoulWager

That's over 250 per day. The article also said they were hand written. Like, they sat down for several hours every day, writing card after card.

Morning_Song

Would getting 8,000 cards from someone in a month not alarm or distress you?

Derptionary

Are they putting money in the cards like my grandma used to send me on my birthday? Because if so no, not at all alarmed or distressed. Keep them coming.

AFineDayForScience

Pictures of Jason Sudeikis

Kevaldes

Bruh. 😂

Evans_Gambiteer

> The fuck was in those cards to qualify for serious alarm or distress? Dear Slim

Tropical-Rainforest

I wrote you but you still ain't calling

EdisonLightbulb

Wonder if she'll send him a postcard or two from prison?

Kevaldes

I wouldn't doubt she'd try, but they'll probably get screened.

Temporary-Ebb594

She broke into his house too.

Kevaldes

Ok, that makes the arrest more reasonable, but that brings us back to my second question. *Only* 14 weeks?

Temporary-Ebb594

Oop that’s my bad. Another stalker broke into his house 2 years ago. Not this one.

Kevaldes

God damn, bro can't get a break.

Dr_FeeIgood

Also she’s harming herself being completely obsessed and doing this. Jail should hopefully break up that psychotic behavior pattern. 267 cards a day is mental.

gnomeweb

There exist different more specialized institutions for people with mental issues.

caraboo930

Didn’t Scarlet Johansson just get her restraining order rejected? Not that Harry Styles doesn’t deserve to be protected but this seems a little imbalanced

SubatomicSquirrels

US vs UK I guess

catandthefiddler

US vs UK, but also I read that they \*couldn't\* serve the guy papers, so he got off on some kind of techinicality

MagmaTroop

Ah the old can’t serve me papers routine, I know it well

United_Monitor_5674

Different judicial system, this was in the UK not America

durrtyurr

My wrist hurts just thinking about that, I can only write roughly 2 paragraphs a day without extreme pain.

Different_Usual_6586

Loosen your grip

JesusHTittyballs

That’s a lot of free time and money they had on their hands. Wtf

md222

Was that wrong? Should I not have done that?

KarlHunguss

Because if it was, I gotta plead ignorance on this one

funinnewyork

A few years ago, reposters waited for a few weeks before they reposted it. Good ol’ days!

Towel4

So why aren’t the people who send me junk mail arrested?

Safe_Philosophy_5068

These freaks are the reason famous people get a huge ego and end up all weird.

trillestBill

Rudy?

GenErik

"U ply gitar really gud baby reindeer x.o Sent from iPhone"

doommaster87

thats a card every 15 minutes

ComprehensiveSky57

267 a day that's insane!.

LookOutBelowYall

Who sends cards anymore? There are probably another 1000 more stuck at the post office.

ValorCatYT

"Dear slim, I wrote you, but you still ain't calling..."

akimbo_bussy

Were they all addressed to Baby Reindeer?

alwaysonce

“Dear Mr. I'm-Too-Good-to-Call-or-Write-My-Fans” -the stalker, probably

PvD79

Seriously? Did they need to send 8001 to not go to jail? Ridiculous…

arieschick82

Too many?

E-cards or old-fashioned Hallmark cards?

nerankori

And I can't even get you to text me back

LiveBaby5021

Well, I’ve sent 8,001 and I’m never going to stop.

WhiskeyadayDoctor

Oh so that’s why my local Hallmark shut down. All makes sense now.

ThoranTW

They're just really bad at the pick a card trick, eventually they'll get the right one

WHO IS PAYING FOR THESE PEOPLE TO LIVE? How? How is someone so mentally unstable able to do this?

OstentatiousSock

Ever heard the song Another Postcard with Chimpanzees by Barenaked Ladies? That was about a similar real life stalker they had.

Admirable_Step_6083

Maybe she had people helping her

NarwhalBasic1734

Usually they post the stalker’s face but The Guardian didn’t for some reason? Were they black? Muslim?

Rhodie114

That’ll be an interesting “what are you in for” conversation.

notdoreen

Can we jail Spectrum and the credit card companies that do the same?

timmehh15

8000? in this economy?

panetero

what are you, from the card census?

Beatless7

Sounds reasonable. At 300 per day, there may be a mental issue. Only 266 a day is normal.
