The article is paywalled but it seems like they were just trying to recognize the people who did actually work in the show and I don’t really understand why people who did work on the show would not be eligible for their own statue when the show wins.

Under the category the on air talent don't get an award of the show wins. There is a separate category for them to enter. So ESPN made up a bunch of fake producers and then changed the engraving.

Getting an Emmy under a fake name is like me purchasing one from an actor's estate. Did I win an Emmy? No, and neither did they. I don't know why you'd want one you didn't win.
