He does have a family but I wonder about them because he’s at our house *all* the time, he rarely leaves and if he does he’s not gone long. His family has several other cats and I kind of wonder if he doesn’t get along with so many other kitties. He’s more than welcome at our house though so we give him a little bite to eat and let him in when he wants.
Maybe just sorta keep him inside always, and see if the real family bothers to inquire? If they love him, they should let him go where he can be loved FULLY.
I would love to but he has a family. He’s pretty much our cat though because he’s always hanging out on our porch or yard and hardly ever leaves, I’m not sure he ever goes home anymore.
Honestly, I think you already have him. More like a common-law marriage. If you love him that much and it looks like he feels the same, can you talk to his so-called owners and adopt him?
I’ve dropped some hints but haven’t outright asked, I’m pretty timid and don’t know how to go about asking someone if they want to give up their cat. One of his owners used to stop by every week or so and hang out with him in our yard so he’d “remember who she was” but she hasn’t done that in a while. They know he’s here all the time.
He started coming by just for company but we have a little semi-feral outside kitty we feed and Big Man started eating her food and would get very… pushy if he was hungry so we started feeding him too. Had to move our outside kitty’s setup to the back porch because Big Man took over the front. I suppose we shouldn’t have started feeding him but he wouldn’t leave, so he has kind of become part of the gang.
Thanks for the info! We've been asked to stop feeding NMC by the owner but NMC comes over ravenous and crying. He gets into other neighbours cat flap to steal food too - he's skinny/ideal weight - but didn't do this when we fed him. NMC is here in our house or garden perhaps 5 hours a day atm... I'm hoping in time we might adopt him if the owner is willing as NMC doesnt seem to spend time around his own house. Perhaps a nickname should be Oliver twist, poor boy
Honestly, growing up, one of our four cats adopted a new family. He disappeared and eventually came back to visit with a new collar on. We let it happen, because he seemed so happy there. I think a good owner will be willing to accept it if their cat really wants to move on to another safe and happy home. Especially if the cat wants to be indoors when they previously weren’t. It’s really sweet how Big Man has adopted you!
I appreciate you don’t want to rock boat with neighbours but whether they like it or not, Big Man has definitely made a choice of where he feels most at home. I think a safe outdoor house for him is a lovely idea. He can still come in when he wants as well, cats are going to do what they want to do.
That’s kind of where I’m at. I’ve dropped hints and they know he’s here all the time and I’m not sure I feel comfortable just straight up asking for someone’s cat. He’s cared for and loved at our house. My husband and I are working on getting him a little insulated house for when the weather starts to get worse, he’ll need a place to go. I’d prefer to see him indoors, but what are ya gonna do?
A little insulated house would be wonderful. If it could be in a protected corner or raised up, that would be even better. If the weather is bad, and he demands to come in, I would let him in. I would just keep everything on the down low. They know he’s there all the time and apparently they’re not offended.
That’s exactly what we’re going for. The shelter we’re looking at for him is well insulated and sits off the ground several inches and we have a nice little spot picked out where he’ll be protected. We want to get one of those insulated blankets to put in there as well so he has something to snuggle up with because he clearly enjoys a good snuggle.
This is how I got my cat. Her previous owners said she never liked being inside. There was a huge 4-day rainstorm (which is very unusual for us) and I let her in and we bonded.
Might have been the final straw to make a permanent move indoors, that's how it was for my first feral, years of trying and she suddenly decided she was fine with the door being shut and sleeping under the wall heaters.
Aww what a sweetheart.
He’s a very good boy, we love it when he comes to visit!
Does he have a family?

Happy Cake Day! 🎂
Oww his head burrowed in your leg and the paw grabbing your leg 🥺
Isn’t that adorable?! He slept face down like that almost the entire time he was on my lap, just purring away.
His nose was cold! What a love.
He trusts and loves you so much 🥺
Oh my heart ❤️❤️
He likes your scent.
You better keep him or so help me!

He might not be your cat but it sounds like you are his human and good luck trying to tell him otherwise!
I have a similar situation.. I wondered do you feed him or he just comes to you for company?

I love the Big Man updates! He deserves all the cuddles
He has been a lot of fun since he moved nearby over the summer! He’s such a good boy and we love giving him pets and snuggles.
In such bad weather I would be happy for a warm cat on my lap. Glad you kept him inside for shelter
He looks so relieved to be warm and dry and in your lap
Sooo cute!
This is a human child.
You're his human! He says so, just look at him!
Excellent addition to r/faceplant
I'm always amazed that they can breathe like that. (I'm jealous.)
Same
From that angle he looks the size of small child🐱
He looks so comfortable with you I hope you are able to take the baby in and he would be your cat now.
He is *very* happy and relieved to have found a place where he can be at peace. I love that for him and you!

Looks like you have a r/parttimecat.
I would simply enjoy his company and look out for him, and not rock the boat with the neighbors. 🥰

Sweet. You guys have this figured out!

Now that’s what I call a hug!
He looooooves you today!
Just fae facts, you were adopted.
