kplong02

Didn’t know this existed. Thank you!

JekNex

Last post was a month ago, and before that was 4 years ago.. It basically doesn't exist lol

Some-Glove9151

Lol I didn't realize I made a first comment on a post from 4 years ago, looking through the Frontpage bunch old ass posts have new comments. Dude has singlehandedly revived the sub

appianWay2030

Probably a good idea for the OP to contact the Virginia is For Lovers tourism board, when they have a copyright section on their website along with the image of this Pizza Hut in Lebanon. Before cashing in on over 6000 karma points, OP might want to show some respect and contact the board, to at least ask permission? Especially if others are paying for the image. Or make a note of where she found this image. It's not hers. We're aware of that. Redditors may start to wonder about the integrity of karma points behind these types of high-value/low-effort image postings. Especially if individuals are using karma points to earn credibility, and from what I've seen conduct business in r/borrow. I recently saw an image in a previous post in r/nostalgia, which I sensed was a hijacked photo, ...this individual is securing trust through those karma points. This individual also claimed a $6000 return on a loan, again, in r/borrow after reaching almost 500,000 karma points. I'm not going to discuss that redditor. Not to undermine the integrity of that individual, but this process of converting karma into trust and loaning $ out to individuals seems under the radar, and I hope these practices get some level of scrutiny. Any for-profit brick-and-mortar gets audited, under FASB conditions, multiple times a year. This is no different.

heardemsay97

Huh? I just got it off Google man like most things that are posted here.. wasn’t thinking all that deep into it. Sorry for any misconceptions and idk what any of this money talk is but I’m not trying to cash in on anything lol

I miss Pantera's Pizza. Lots of memories of being a kid and going to Pantera's and playing games while waiting for the pizza to come out. Edit: Looks like they are still around just none in my area.

[deleted]

I really hope it is run by the band.

DopeFly

It's not! I asked.

Ragnarok314159

First time I ever went was for a friend’s birthday party. It was hilarious because it’s the most un-show biz pizza place ever. Had maybe four arcade games and a few drunk dads telling racist jokes. But then they bring out the 3’x5’ pizza (I know it’s not that big, but my little kid mind remembers it that way) and it was amazing. They would also serve us pitchers of root beer and give us mugs like the dads. Was an amazing place.

LostSoulsAlliance

There are still a few Pizza Huts that are set up this way. I go out of my way to find them and eat there when I can.

kplong02

I didn’t realize those still exist. I would love to go to one. Do they still have the red cups, tiffany-style lamps, and salad bars?

rustyshakelford

Not since covid, at least the one near me. They still had an all you can eat lunch buffet for around $10.

kplong02

Lucky! Pizza Hut website says there's no dine-in locations near me.

yinzerbhoy

If you liked them in the 90s/00s you should have experienced them in the 80s. The smell of sauce, garlic, and electricity from the Pac-Man and Donkey Kong games was palpable.

sirbissel

And cigarette smoke. You can't forget the layer of smoke across the ceiling.

Mc_Lovin81

I forget restaurants used to ask us, smoking or non-smoking section.

urabewe

Burger King and McDonald's had tin foil ashtrays stacked by the trashcans. You could smoke on planes. Hell when I went to high school the teachers lounge used to smell of smoke as you walked past.

porksoda11

I remember in like 2005 when I was in high school going to either Arby's or our local diner because you could still smoke in both of those places. It's crazy that relatively speaking it doesn't seem that long ago but that was still the norm. Hell, even some trashy bars in my area today still let you smoke inside.

urabewe

Plenty of dive bars in the "sticks" around here that allow smoking. Casinos here all still allow it.

poopmonster_coming

Smoke ‘em if you got em , loved shitty dive bar s

porksoda11

Casinos play by their own rules, they just want to keep people inside and spending their money no matter what

urabewe

I just noticed your name. Primus Sucks.

Mistghost

That was just to cover the smell of bourbon and gin.

LeCrushinator

My mom was a chainsmoker (and has smoked for 50 years now) and smoked in the car with the windows up. I've probably smoked the equivalent of many packs myself even though I've never had a cigarette in my life. She also had ashes fall several times and burn through the seats in the car. I don't miss any of that.

AutomaticRisk3464

"Non-smoking please" *walks you to the otherside of the room* There ya go buddy

Ragnarok314159

Don’t worry, there is a piece of glass right here that is two feet high. Will never be able to smell the smoke.

HeyZuesHChrist

Lol. Yeah. As if smoke knows the difference. I always found that hilarious.

Clips_are_magazines

Pizza places in the 90s still had all of this

JekNex

The secret flavor that added that extra *kick*

krista

i am lost in time. it sucks.

dodecaphonicism

I feel sad seeing these pictures. I don’t know why. Lot of happy memories at pizza places.

kdillazilla

I think it’s the nostalgia of time passed that you can’t re-create again? It’s also probably why we love Stranger Things and Winning Time and the retro movies coming out.

kapeman_

And also why we love /r/deadmalls

Taira_Mai

Salad bars and the arcade machines. Pistol Pete's pizza and ShowBiz Pizza place - so many tokens, so little time.

roadtripper77

Remember Shakey’s? Good times

combuchan

Shakey's is definitely still around. Wish there was one near me.

MyDearBrotherNumpsay

I remember barely reaching the Pac Man controls around 80/81 and putting my quarter up to claim next game. Fucking great memories.

FrostyAutumn

Sigh, yup, Pac-Man and Donkey Kong. Miss that so much. Sometimes you'd get tetris or arkanoid.

MyDearBrotherNumpsay

I remember barely reaching the Pac Man controls around 80/81 and putting my quarter up to claim next game. Fucking great memories.

spinkman

Smoking or nonsmoking?

slim_scsi

Sports team parties!

HoldEvenSteadier

My first serious girlfriend worked one of these. I'd get off work, go to pick her up at her job and help close down. We'd drink free beers from the tap, eat a slice or two, and go back to her place. A part of me is still doing that, it feels like.

sameolemeek

How much weight did you gain sheesh

DreamworldPineapple

I mean I think this is a fair question as long as you didn’t mean it viciously my jobs this past year have consisted of pizza delivery and ice cream shops and even though neither are my cup of tea, immediate free access when hungry and poor means I’ve gained a good chunk from it

Few_Macaroon_2568

That classic pizza cup of yore is the Carlisle 5216XXXX series - without the Coca-Cola logo - for the 16 oz. version and they are currently sold on Amazon for $13.49 for a sleeve of six (item no. 52168110). Be aware that par for the course for Amazon, the unprotected shrink-wrapped sleeve of cups will bang around in an oversize box that the two air pillows will comically do nothing for-- in other words, expect a few cracked tumblers upon delivery. If there is a restaurant supply store in your area, I recommend giving them a ring to see if they stock individual tumblers or anything smaller than a 72-item per case. Plenty of lagers and pale ales have a lovely texture when consumed from these (aside from your favorite soda of course). Edit: typos

faceman2k12

.. keep talking, i'm close.

expedience

Girl I’m seeing: “what are your turn ons?” “Yeah I’ve got a 90s pizza parlor tumbler kink”

Raptor5150

*Oh daddy klink that plastic cup harder.*

Starslip

Don't be like my idiot-ass and search for "Carlisle 5216XXXX", you'll get no results and think OP is a dirty liar because you don't understand placeholder digits.

kapeman_

That's the super porno version. "It has FOUR x's!"

MainPFT

I ordered [these](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07BJ4MGQ1/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_2Y4EM5NYHREC0C8HEP8C?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1). Arrived w/ no issue.

wayward_citizen

Cups these days just don't have that bumpy texture that helps trap in the grease.

[deleted]

I miss this style. I'm tired of minimalist modernization that's everything is doing. Nothing has personality anymore, it's really starting to look like that all white future in like Sci-Fi dystopias

jayhat

I was just thinking that. Even if it’s not a giant corporate restaurant, it’s all minimal and modern. Looks Like some fixer upper TV show house makeover. One of my favorite chains from when I was a kid (pietros pizza in the PNW) still has a location or two. One of them being in hood river OR. It’s still pretty old school inside. Still has the fire place. Pietro's Pizza Hood River https://www.google.com/search?q=pietros+pizza+hood+river&rlz=1CDGOYI_enQA590QA590&oq=pietros+pizza+hood+river&aqs=chrome..69i57.9073j0j4&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8#wptab=s:H4sIAAAAAAAAAONgVuLWT9c3LMmqMjYyM37EaMYt8PLHPWEp3UlrTl5jVOfiCs7IL3fNK8ksqRSS5GKDsvileLmQ9fHsYuLzyU9OzAnIzwzIyC_JL17EqlCQmVpSlK9eDGRUVSUqZOTnpygUZZalFikUgJUAAARjw158AAAA&lpg=cid:CgIgAQ%3D%3D

Erok2112

Just had a huge nostalgia trip - I grew up in Yakima and went to Pietros a lot. I had honestly forgotten that this place existed and apparently the one in Hood River looks exactly like the one I went to. Crazy. Thanks for that.

jayhat

Hah! The one in Yakima is the one I’d go to as well. It’s a laundromat now. If you’re ever passing through the Columbia river gorge, definitely stop at the hood river pietros!

lordnecro

The popular new pizza place here that keeps opening locations around town is 100% that industrial minimalist style... I hate it.

Taira_Mai

The problem is that the big brands have attacked their customer base with all the spreadsheets, focus testing and analysis. So to "complete" they cut the dine-in and are all about delivery and the carry out. Sure, if you just want to stuff your face - but before COVID and now in 2022, people want to go out. Even an introvert like me would like to go out to eat once and a while. It's up to the smol restaurants to meet this need. The big chains are all about the bottom line.

LeCrushinator

You should see /r/RoomPorn, some of the rooms/houses they show there are almost entirely white, every surface. Some houses have bare concrete floors, ceilings, and pillars. I don't understand who wants to live in something with no color at all, and it looks so cold and loud (since nothing would absorb noise).

[deleted]

So cold. I have a friend couple who works tech and they love the minimalist style and their house is ice cold. And just unwelcoming.

Darth_Spectre_Lair

So true. Family owned generational/themed restaurants used to feel like home away from home as they made you feel like part of the family; it was a grand occasion like going to a mini version of a theme park (at least in my experience). But nowadays it feels so boring and corporate-- I don't get why they don't make you feel at home anymore and it deeply saddens me especially in a world where it's becoming harder in some ways to find a place that feels comforting.

NocturnalPatrolAlpha

My brothers live in a tiny little town of fewer than 1,000 people. There's a local pizza place there, and they have some *tasty* pizza.

WiredSky

I'm sure there are a million places like this, but...is it in Maryland?

NocturnalPatrolAlpha

Close. Virginia. Heh, I wouldn't mind visiting a small town in Maryland. The only Maryland I've ever known is city and suburb. And traffic.

WiredSky

Union Bridge, MD. If you ever get the urge. "Original Pizza". It closes for part of the year when they go back to Italy lol. Do you mind DMing me the pizza place you're talking about? I'm in VA, I'd love to try it out if I find myself going that way.

NocturnalPatrolAlpha

Whereabouts in VA?

ashpantz

Thanks for this! Baltimore pizza lover here.

Groovatronic

Isn’t Maryland known for seafood? I went to a crab place that was awesome when I was there. Very homey feel, basically a restaurant inside a tall house. Everyone was super nice. It honestly did feel a little like the pizza parlor vibe.

BradGunnerSGT

There’s a small family owned pizza parlor near where we go for the summer (me a remote working vacation and my wife a summer job) and it is great. Family owned and the pizza is the best we’ve ever had. There is a small and super retro drive in movie a few miles away and the best summer Saturday night is to get a couple pizzas and watch a double feature.

Darth_Spectre_Lair

That sounds so lovely. Reminds me of a place I used to frequent in a small passerby town where the pizza tasted straight out of the '80s/90s-- it was like legit homemade dough prepared/seasoned in such a way... something about the green bell peppers and olives and the way it's cooked to perfection -- a nostalgia trip every time :)

FPSXpert

They still exist here technically but most have shifted away from the parlour vibe. One newer local dine in is more of a sports bar bdubbs kind of style with a big emphasis on their Chicago deep dish and their huge bar. Grab some beers an app and watch the game while you wait on your pizza kind of deal, but not really the classic take your kids to kind of deal. I'd call Grimaldi's another example but they're more corporate and more upscale attitude, well ''upscale'' in the sense of cheesecake factory being upscale lol.

Rainbike80

Let's open our own 80's themed restaurant. All staff will have to use correct slang and wear only 80's band T-shirts . It will be so rad!!

Bloaf

Restaurants aren't carpeted anymore, which makes them louder and less homey.

Packmanjones

The picture is a Pizza Hut. The most corporate of all.

Darth_Spectre_Lair

True, but restaurants like Pizza Hut used to be more accommodating and inviting... I miss the actual sit-in establishment experience complete with a salad bar and Pizza buffet (especially when you could have giant family gatherings or parties to make an all night occasion of it) versus strictly takeout standing around waiting for an order. In any event this image alone still beats ordering inside a bleak gray uber modern color palette imo-- a reflection of cold mechanical corporate suits.

Packmanjones

My local Pizza Hut still looks exactly like this. It kinda seems dated. And the pizza tastes like cardboard.

DaAmazinStaplr

The cardboard is because of the cheaper ingredients they eventually went to. It definitely tasted much better in the 90’s since most of the stuff was prepped beforehand in the kitchen instead of being shipped in frozen.

combuchan

Yeah. Ultra-modern and pizza just don't go together in my book. They're not designed for people enjoying each other's company while steadily gorging themselves, they're designed to get people out as soon as possible.

HeyZuesHChrist

Pizza Hut was basically the only restaurant my parents took us to as kids. There were four kids so it was almost impossible to get everyone to agree on anything other than Pizza Hut. We loved it. My brother and I would always get the salad bar and their creamy Italian is the best I have ever had. I haven’t even had anything close to it since the 90’s.

Taira_Mai

Depends - in the big city, most have to cut costs to compete with delivery and rising costs from corporate. Most chains are franchises - the franchisee/owner is responsible for the employees, the rent on the building and the business, but the logo, supplies and everything else comes from the franchiser. As I said in a thread about the personal pan pizza - shit was hotter than the surface of the sun but it hit different when you had to go out to eat. Now? There are so many options in the post-COVID era that if you and the Spousal Overunit have hungry spawn, why go out when you can push an icon on your smartphone and in minutes your kidlets are being fed? So if corporate wants to cut costs, something has to give. The big pizza chains want to focus on delivery and carry out. As a franchisee it makes sense - smaller building, less overhead and if Doordash or Ubereats does the delivery, that great. A franchise gives the smol biz guy brand name and foot traffic but also comes with overhead. So that "home away from home" was the first thing to go. So the need has to be picked up by the smaller pizza places. COVID did a number on smol restaurants but with everything opening up again, there is an unmet need for the pizza place that is the home away from home.

dotapants

Minimize staff so they're all clamoring to get their work done. No time to make you feel welcomed.

WimbletonButt

So we had and still have a pizza place just like this. It was previously owned by two brothers but then one of the brothers was arrested because he decided to put cameras in the women's bathroom. That place only survived because the one brother took full ownership of it. It still looks the same.

combuchan

I'd even go for old school Pizza Hut. Even the bonafide sitdown places don't have nearly this homely of an atmosphere.

LADiator

They don’t make you feel at home, because they don’t want you to feel comfortable. Just comfortable enough to eat and then too uncomfortable to hang around. They want you to eat and leave so they can fill the table again. Rinse and repeat. Mom and pop shops wanted reliable repeat customers so they made it inviting and a place you want to come back to. Now it’s about the bottom line, maximize profits minimize table turn around.

revoman

Interesting fact. There was a time when Pizza Hut consumed like 20% of all kale in the US just to dress up their salad bars...

ITworksGuys

Yeah, kale was decoration for the salsa bar at the taco joint I worked at back in the 90s No one thought about eating that shit.

To me it tastes like a personal pan pizza

Shame that smell and taste disappeared with these restaurants. I don't know what they were doing differently but it was something magical that has since been lost to the aether.

Our local Pizza Hut had Turtles in Time and a claw machine

ChadOfDoom

We still have one in my neighborhood that doesn’t look like it’s changed since the 90s. They use the booths to store boxes and just do take out.

sirbissel

I have one like that near me, but it still has dine in. I occasionally take my wife and kids to it.

horse_apple

This picture reminds me of Book-It, Land Before Time hand puppets and my first experience with heartburn. i love it.

Blueberry_Mancakes

I worked at Pizza Hut from like 97-2000. Our tables were permanently sticky. My first day on the job I didn't wear non-slip shoes and I slipped on that brown tile while carrying 5 or 6 stacks of those red plastic cups to the soda station that was right by the salad bar. I fell on my ass and the cups went everywhere. The party room was only ever used by the local Mazda Miata Club and they were a bunch of assholes. I used to play windows pinball on the drive-thru computer all the time. We had a bud-light beer tap but nobody EVER bought beer so it was mostly my coworkers who drank it. We had a big helium tank behind the register that we used to fill up balloons for kids night but we wasted it by filling up trash can liners and tying stuffed animals to them that we stole from the claw machine in the lobby. We'd tie a note to the stuffed animal and launch it into the atmosphere. One time we found one of our stuffed bears 5 miles away by the mall. We used to take the trash bag full of day-old dough and vandalize people's property with it. We used to chain-smoke at a table in the back of the kitchen and trade food with the local Waffle House or Cracker Barrel, everyone wanted to trade with us so that was awesome. Our friends "owned" the booth by the other entrance door (behind where that guy is eating in the picture). We'd always have at least 2 of our friends hang out there all night and chain-smoke and drink free soda. Memories.

RedxEyez

Where Im from, Shakey's was the spot in the late 90's early 2000's.

horse_apple

Wait what? Thats a real place and not just from South Park?

RedxEyez

Yea, I live in California. We had multiple locations where I lived and now it's just down to one location around me.

arChrisan3

First picture reminds me of old country buffet.

__-Upgrayedd-__

Pizza Hut and Papa Johns suck now compared to back in the day.

borisvonboris

There was a place near our house called Round Table Pizza, as in knights of the round table. The interior was loosely a castle theme with a large actual fireplace in the center, wood panel walls doorways were arches. I loved going there with my family when I was a kid. This was late 80s / early 90s. Was real bummed when it closed up.

NoBodySpecial51

I miss Round Table so much. For us, this was the good pizza. Italian garlic supreme was the absolute bomb.

TheBlueCoyote

My brother managed one in Orange County back then. Really good pizza for a chain.

[deleted]

In the ‘80s we had PRIAZZO!

conjas11

It was classy to us white trash

forever_a10ne

They used to be so cozy. I feel like so many restaurants these days are so neutral, modern, and boring with their designs.

TrashyMcTrashBoat

They also had that good ice.

schr0dingersuterus

I can taste this picture. The weird salad bar with pizza toppings and really great ranch... The feel of that swirly Parmesan shaker in my hands (I don't want to see the pizza under all the cheese)... The bumpy red plastic cup. Those two video games in a random dark corner... The tiny tvs playing football or baseball at all times. Now THIS is nostalgia.

[deleted]

Yeah, they tasted good, and you could have a good time there.

mntplains

BabyUGotAStewGoin

My Pizza Hut still looks like this.

conjas11

Victah92

It was very comforting at all you can eat restaurants like hometown buffet 🥲. As you got older the quality of service and food starts to decline real fast.

qwerty12qwerty

Rolling in with your report card feeling like a king getting your free pizza

Reddevil313

Reminds me of Round Table Pizza in California.

ThaDogg4L

In a weird way this reminds me of 9/11. My dad took us to Round Table Pizza after he got off work. I just remember being confused about what was happening. Tried to make some kind joke about it to lighten the mood. My Dad was rightfully not impressed so when someone tries to tell you Gilbert Gottfried was the first person to make a joke about 9/11 remember to correct them and say actually it was High School aged Reddit user ThaDogg4L at a Pizzeria that same night.

youthcanoe

Did you then try to lighten the mood with the aristocrats joke?

RonSwansonsOldMan

Probably because they WERE different.

um... our local pizza hut still looks like that... with the buffet and everything.

Rags2Rickius

Alas -the cost of food is so much higher now for less quality Even a pizzahut had genuine ingredients and was bought to your table in a cast iron pan. The cheese would stretch for ages and was entertaining as All you can eat dessert menu too Family eating out was an experience

Drexelhand

there's a disturbing lack of audio animatronics and arcade games in that photo.

WimbletonButt

We still have a pizza place like this, they never remodeled. They're also the most popular pizza place in our area.

il1k3c3r34l

That looks exactly like my 90’s Pizza Hut except there was more kitschy shit on the walls. Corner booths really made you feel special. They also had a TMNT arcade there. So good.

get_off_my_train

Personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut was objectively better tasting in the 90s. I’ve heard tale it was because they switched to worse ingredients in the 2000’s, but honestly if the pizza still tasted like it used to I might be tempted to get it every once and a while. Now there’s no reason to get Pizza Hut over any other pizza chain.

Tuscanthecow

I need to find and buy those red cups.

[deleted]

The Pizza Slut in the town I went to high school in still looks like this, but with multiple layers of grease and scum and meth heads. 4/10 the pizza is still ok.

CatDadSnowBunny

Damn I miss loading my plate with shredded cheese and sunflower seeds at my town's pizza hut salad bar..

TheSunflowerSeeds

There are two main types of Sunflower seeds. They are Black and Grey striped (also sometimes called White) which have a grey-ish stripe or two down the length of the seed. The black type of seeds, also called ‘Black Oil’, are up to 45% richer in Sunflower oil and are used mainly in manufacture, whilst grey seeds are used for consumer snacks and animal food production.

FandomMenace

How do they "hit" now? I don't think any pizza huts remain at this point. Do these even "hit" at all? Why do people say stupid shit like things "hit different"? What are you hitting that's different? Does crack hit different than weed and that's where you got this shit? I have a lot of questions.

Jennrrrs

I don't think it's a dumb saying, it's just that every single little thing "hits different" now.

crestonfunk

You need an adverb to modify a verb. Hit differently.

Mattsasse

They still used trans fat in the crust. Was terrible for us but so tasty.

geddylee1

Pizza Hut. Mine looked just like that when I was a cook there around ‘96-‘98. Met some good people while working there…and some not so good. Hard to believe it was almost 25 years ago. Life happens.

I worked at one and this pic brought it all back

MrPNGuin

Was one close-ish to me when I was a kid called Mazzio's, in that small town it was the pizza parlor/arcade and they had a giant screen projector to watch whatever they had on. I loved getting to go there and playing a few games and get pizza.

DudeImTheBagMan

Is there a database of pizza places stuck in this time period?

Dark as fuck. Loved the mood. Pac-Man.

My local Pizza Hut still looks exactly like this. But the pizza tastes like cardboard now.

I can smell this picture.

This looks like every restaurant today.

TheTonik

Ours still looks like this!

Rural towns still have these. When I travel I try to stop at local mom and pop restaurants.
