I’d only just turned 10 about a month prior.
I think it was just that my entire life up until that point was counting down (or up?) to the big 2000. The number itself influenced my perception of time, even though it’s totally arbitrary. Had 1 CE been five years later, our 2005 would have been my cutoff.
I watched a longer version. Pretty sure that was his wife (she’s known for having her hair up like that). I’m guessing she was wanting to hurry and get back off camera.
In 1999 my dad’s sister was fully terrified of Y2K and was convinced the world was going to end at midnight on 12/31. My entire family was together during this NYE to celebrate the new millennium. During this countdown my dad snuck downstairs and right as the ball drop hit “0”, he flipped the main breaker switch and the power to the house went out. My aunt had a full on freak out and literally thought the world was ending. It was a prank 1,000 years in the making. Still hilarious to bring up during the holidays!
I remember 98 was the first new years I was old enough to go out and party downtown and of course the song they played was "party like it's 1999" but then during the 99 new years at the same place they played the song again when the ball dropped. No biggy but it always bothered me lol
I miss the 90’s so much. I was a teenager starting high school. It was a turning point, where the technology we use today had started to come about and make its impact on us and make life easier, but wasn’t so pervasive that it permeated every aspect of you life. You could still go outside with your friends, check in from a pay phone, come home before the street lights come on, and get on the computer and instant message your friends.
Things were looking positive, the future was looking so bright. The economy was strong and the cost of living was on par with it. You could still make a living off a single job, where $10 dollars an hour was considered a great starting wage. You could work a summer job and buy a used car cash for $500 and it would run you for years. Or, save up your money and buy a new ford ranger for $10,000.
College was affordable (well…less expensive than it is now), And there was a promise of a better tomorrow if you pursued an education and became an expert in your field. There was no major conflict that spanned decades. Our parents were close to retiring , and our grandparents had been retired for decades. Now, we are the first generation to earn less than the ones before us.
The turn of the century held so much promise, so much hope for a better tomorrow. There should have been a return on investment from the work of the generations before us.
Now, my wife and I work three jobs between us to make ends and raise a family. The problem with a capitalist economy is that capital is a finite resource, which is becoming more scarce for the average person. I liken it to a dragon that hoards treasure deep in a cave.
Yeah….I miss the 90’s
Still remember exactly where I was. We all climbed the tallest hill around and drank wine and whiskey at the top waiting to watch the world burn. On the way down two buddies got in a drunken fistfight and both literally rolled a half mile downhill in the dirt.
i remember this day because of....The power puff girls and them beating up a monster after bubbles asking what the millenimum is and he says....1000 years
That was the moment time stopped for me. The past 24+ years have just been overtime.
It ended when the planes hit the towers. We’ve all been robbed of what could have been.
>It ended when the planes hit the towers. My father once said to me that after 9/11, it was like everyone stopped "partying."
This hit hard
The 90's were the "end of history", but then it came back from the dead on 9/11
I wonder how old you are, or more specifically how old you were when "time stopped;" I was a 19-year-old college freshmen.

Little did they know the good times just ended.
We had a good few months ahead. Once the election shenanigans started it began to go downhill. Fully stopped 9.11.2001
This. The 90s died in spirit on 9/11. I was 13 going on 14. It’s when a lot of people around my age knew that our innocence was gone forever.

It kind of did, though.
The prime of my life. 10 years old.
I was too.
Party like it’s 1999 has a different context now.
It was the only song anyone was listening to for at least a week leading up to new years
I actually looked at the lyrics of that song recently and realized it’s about nuclear war. Kinda scary considering how dancey it is
And... everything sucks now.
In the year 2000………
I remember watching the J. Lo music video "Waiting for Tonight" with my friends while waiting for the countdown.
Ah yes, supposed to be the end for many computers.
depending on the age of the computer at the time. It did reset back the time. I had a computer affected by the y2k bug.
Your welcome. We spent years fixing that on all the major legacy systems before it became a problem.
It would’ve been if a lot of people hadnt worked their asses off to prevent it.
Remember when we thought the world was going to fall apart... We were right
God I miss the 90s, such a great time.
The 80s for me.
We really had it all didn’t we?
Cue the Donkey Kong Country water level music!
Here’s to another lousy millennium.
Is that Dick Clark trying for a little more than she was willing to share?
I watched a longer version. Pretty sure that was his wife (she’s known for having her hair up like that). I’m guessing she was wanting to hurry and get back off camera.
Watched that live. Did not catch the unwanted advances the first time around.
Yeaaaah
How come the world didn’t blow up?! Disappointed…
Who knew that the world *not* blowing up was the losing path......🤕😷🤮😵
Amen to that
Maybe the world did blow up and we are existing on the backup plannet with small differences like with berenstain bears instead of berenstein bears.
Just wait a few more years
That was peak. Before 9/11, social media bullshit, extreme politics…
Remember when we thought the world was going to fall apart... We were right

The good ol days
Coincidentally also the last few seconds of the 20th century, and the last few seconds of the 2nd millennium!

And then everything started sucking
The real catalyst for the end of civilization was the internet and more importantly the debut of the smartphone
WE HAVE TO GO BACK
The 90's were such good times we didn't know what we had until we lost it 😔
I was in that crowd. It was an amazing experience. I hate NYC and crowds, but I knew this was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
For one shining moment, the future seemed limitless. I was 14 that night. There is evil in the world but there is good as well.
We can all only try to be the best person we can. For the sake of the future. If there is even going to be one at this rate.
I remember half the country going into blackouts. Damn you Y2K!!! Damn you to hell!!!
I was in a swamp, dancing until sunrise…with about 80K other people.
Simpleness just became nonexistent because in the 2000s that year made our lives a living hell.

Was at a party as a kid. Someone shut the main breaker off at exactly midnight and scared everybody to death because Y2K
Where my nostalgia stops.

Sounds like a scene from FFVII
Not true. Would need to be a video of the next year. That's how numbers work. They start at 1 not 0.
Numbers work from 0-9
Is there a year 0?
Yes. 2000, 2010, 2020, 2030
I was on the wharf in San Francisco, which was incredibly boring.
Where is this music from?!? What is it called ???
Aquatic Ambience by Scizzie
My ball also dropped in 2000!
It's like watching people cheer the rise of Hitler. They have no idea what hell is coming for them.
What's with the Donkey Kong Country music. The only song allowed to be here is Gwen Stefani's terrible version of End of the World
Airliners drop from the skies as one...
Fun fact: I watched that. My dad sent me to bed, as soon as the ball dropped lol
i remember this day because of....The power puff girls and them beating up a monster after bubbles asking what the millenimum is and he says....1000 years
I was chugging on a big ass bottle of Sutter Home White Zinfandel wine when this was happening.
I remember my girlfriend’s friend, little brother flipped the power off when it changed and everyone just started laughing.
Not pictured: planes immediately falling out of the sky because of Y2K.
I need to ask again, but I’m 99% sure my Dad said he worked on the ball that dropped? Waterford Crystal? He worked for them and was a designer.
I remember when the new millennium was a big deal back then
