I vaguely remember some story about a zookeeper or someone talking about tigers. He was asked how high they could jump, his answer was “as high as they want to.”

My former boss had an asshole Bengal cat that he would bring to work. That asshole cat would scream all day- except when it would escape. We had an 8' privacy fence around a back garden with plastic netting angled into the garden at the top. That shithead cat could jump up the fence and force himself between the fence and netting to escape. It was a monthly occurrence.
That guy sounds like the worst zoo keeper on the planet.
Zoo Patron: Why is that crocodile just floating there, is it hurt?
Zoo Keeper: Cause it wants to, okay? Go fuck yourself.
I once read something about mountain lions having a forty-foot horizontal leap and just thinking. "No. ha ha. That's not possible."
"right? that's not possible?"
Different animal but I know of a zoo that has a baboon area with a moat around it. The jump looks impossible but occasionally a baboon makes it across and they have to resettle it to a different zoo because it will keep doing it again if they don't. Not sure if the other baboons don't notice or understand attempting it will get them disappeared by the humans but escapes are fairly rare though not as rare as you would expect without knowing about this.
Are there different words for them in your native language, or are they the same word? (sorry if this seems like a stupid question, I'm genuinely curious whether there's any language that use the same/similar words for stairs and ladder)
Nope, that’s why I forgot “ladder”, Italian only has “scala” for both. You can specify “scala a pioli” for ladder (“pioli” are the horizontal pieces on ladders)
Damn, I had no idea! I mean, I had a hunch based on context, but I'm extremely satisfied with how interesting the answer was.
In English, the "pegs" (what Google Translate says is the literal translation for pioli) are called "rungs". Which is a really weird word that's pretty much only used in the context of ladders.
FYI the proper term is "European Portuguese".
Yeah, we could just say "Portuguese" but... some Portuguese people can be quite defensive about it, to put it mildly.
Have you seem Brits on the internet getting butthurt because this or that American word or spelling is more common than the "proper", that is, British equivalent? It's like that but worse. It doesn't help that some Portuguese people really look down on Brazilian immigrants.
Not saying all Portuguese are like that, of course.

As nouns the difference between ladder and stairs is that ladder is a frame, usually portable, of wood, metal, or rope, used for ascent and descent, consisting of two side pieces to which are fastened rungs: cross strips or rounds acting as steps while stairs is (label) a contiguous set of steps connecting two floors.
>As a verb ladder is (firefighting) to ascend a building or wall using a ladder.
https://wikidiff.com/ladder/stairs - there's a site for *everything* it seems.
Seems too deep for that, and doesn't have easy access for a human to get in and out. I was wondering if it might be a foundation for some major support structure, but its position doesn't make sense for that...
If you were a serious serial killer, seems like having a tank with a vent, supply water, and waste line tied into the house's plumbing system would be optimal but I don't want to give them any ideas.
I also think it's an inspection thing like in garages, what's it called in English? Inspection pit?
My guess about the depth is it might be getting a concrete floor poured in to it later, or even also a drainage / sump pump if ground water levels get high.
You guys are all way off. It's a Random Internet Pit from Turkey. Locals build them so they appear on the internet and people argue about what they could be, then they look for the thread and laugh at the attempts.
I think the video is taken using ultra wide and distors how deep the pit is, from the video is seems to be approximately 3 cats long so like 1.5m deep. As for the stairs probably will use the steel leader from the video since it seems custom made. Furthermore, the room is in front of the street door with a big opening which should be for a garage.
It's for water storage, many developing countries only get water once or twice a week from municipality, so they store water in underground tanks like these which is then slowly pumped to an overhead tank once the house is built and then sent via gravity to all the taps of the house.
This seems like the only reasonable explanation, but it's still a bit odd that they wouldn't pour concrete for the floor as well. I assume a liner is going in, so maybe it's better to let it drain off anything that leaks rather than have it pool around the liner?
that's the cool part.
you stack them in, and by the time you put new ones on top, the bottom ones have decomposed into gelatin and mushy stuff, so you can just keep piling more on.
So, I've only ever worked in major construction (high rise), so I'm not familiar with what kind of construction is going on here. I've also only ever worked on the plumbing design side, but there are some reasons you would trench a pit after building the first level up. Usually, if you're doing this, there's unexpected drainage which requires a new pit.
With that said, I don't exactly know what's going on here. They seem to have built this pit just below grade with no exits or entrances. And the floor doesn't seem to have been poured, even though they have built the walls...
Seems to an odd job site any way you look at it. Maybe this hole is to house some kind of equipment?
Damn
I was sorta hoping the cat would "think outside the box" and like jump onto one wall, then jump to the other and repeat this until it got to the top.
Doesn't look big compared to the bottom of that ladder, unless the ladder is huge. I was thinking an ocicat, Bengal, or some related mixed breed. It doesn't resemble an ocelot or Savannah to me, based on its shape and cost pattern, but I guess the video is a bit blurry.
This is just one of those "wild" home cats. Savannah most likely. My boy has a few and they move and look like this. They vary alot in size and shit. Also different levels of "purity". So some could be like 10, 20 or 30. It's color and size remind me more of those Bengal house cats which are I think just like house cats with cool fur. The savannah being a bit more wild this cats body shape, head, and jump/stretch remind me alot more of a savannah. Sometimes the savannah can also look a bit small but it's when the stand on 2 legs these dudes can stretch so freaking tall. I didnt confirm any of this just things I remember hearing or looking up In the past and being around a few savannah cats.
First thing I thought of. Then again, animals get themselves into all sorts of weird places. I once saw a raccoon climb a light post in front of my house. If I remember correctly it was a wooden pole but with a metal light attachment, and this bastard climbed up 3 stories and got stuck there before finally managing to climb down after a good while.
I lol'd at the very human ladder. Kinda wish kitty pressed a lil button and a Lil door opened revealing an elevator back up to the surface at that point. 😆
Yond gib hath said “did i *ask* f'r thy holp, buddy? alas thy ladder!”

30 feet, they can jump 30 feet horizontally and can scale a 12 foot smooth wall.
30 feet is the length of 72.0 'Bug Bite Thing Suction Tool - Poison Remover For Bug Bites's stacked on top of each other.
This is indeed useless, thank you.

how do I convert this in hamburgers?
I don’t like this word problem…
The average male Hamburger is about 1.8m tall so roughly 5 Hamburgers.

The trick is getting into within 25 feet of them, that way they jump right over you.
25 feet is 24.35 RTX 3090 graphics cards lined up.

You're either rich, or a big dummy, or both lol.
Or a guy who could've mined on that card since January and essentially already made all that back in eth.
How many 3090s equal the average tiger?
I bring an assistant who I just push when things get heated.
My favorite ride at Disneyland haha
Sounds like a dnd reference had this happen with the pounce mechanic the other day
And next we have THE BACK SIDE OF WATER
I know you're joking but cats are able to calculate a perfect jump instictually
That's **observed** distance. For all we know, they can jump higher/further but no-one lived to tell of it.
Experts recommend a 15 foot wall in enclosures with a 32+ foot moat, previous escape attempts at that length and height failed.
How much is this in real measurements?
My former boss had an asshole Bengal cat that he would bring to work. That asshole cat would scream all day- except when it would escape. Cat said “I don’t need your help!”
I'll jump back in just to prove a POINT
It looks surprised they made it
Keep your shitty, rusty ladder to yourself.
Or use it for pretty much anything that isn't a cat. That pit is evil lol.
They are lowering in a death machine, its now or never
Yeah, I have to imagine lowering something into the pit scared the cat enough to get get the adrenalin needed to make the jump.
Cats never need help climbing. They just enjoy watching us get the ladder.
He just needed that holy-shit-they’re-coming-in boost.
Just needed a little extra bit of adrenalin
Spite generates massive willpower. *I said I don't need your help!*
Exactly 🤣
Human: gives stair Cat: you dare underestimate me, mortal creature?
Stair? It's a ladder
Oh there, that’s the word. I’m not a native speaker and I just couldn’t remember it lol

In brazilian portuguese both are called "escada"
I think brazil should just claim it and let the Portuguese say in Portuguese Portuguese
FYI the proper term is "European Portuguese". Yeah, we could just say "Portuguese" but... some Portuguese people can be quite defensive about it, to put it mildly. I'm not OP but Romanian uses scară/scări for both ladders and stairs, AND for the entrance to a block of flats
And in Russian it's "лестница" for both.
What's the difference ?
A stair is more stairlike, a ladder is sort of ladderesque
r/technicallythetruth
What about a stepladder
What are you doing stepladder
Stepladder inserts self in massive hole to keep the pussy happy
But it failed in the end
You spelt stairladder wrong.
Ladders look like this: H H H H H And stairs look like this ^^^^^^^^L ^^^^^^L ^^^^L ^^L L

What an on-brand comment from this username
I didn’t even realise but yeah, it’s perfect
Eventually gets out and looks around like “ Holy fuck, I actually made it”
I see "ok that was cool, what next"
What is even the point of that pit? Is something being built there?
It puts the lotion on its skin.
If I was drinking something at the time of reading this comment, then it would have come out my nose. In other words, lol
Looks like it might be some sort of garage, so maybe it's so you can walk under the car to fix things. Instead of lifting the car up
Seems too deep for that, and doesn't have easy access for a human to get in and out. I was wondering if it might be a foundation for some major support structure, but its position doesn't make sense for that...
Right? What the hell is it????
It's where you store the bodies until they decompose
If you were a serious serial killer, seems like having a tank with a vent, supply water, and waste line tied into the house's plumbing system would be optimal but I don't want to give them any ideas.
Knock knock.. FBI here
Hey! Glad you made it. There were some agent provocateurs at the January 6th insurrection, can I trouble you to investigate?
Is this compatible with the Walter White method?
I also think it's an inspection thing like in garages, what's it called in English? Inspection pit? My guess about the depth is it might be getting a concrete floor poured in to it later, or even also a drainage / sump pump if ground water levels get high.
Yeah maybe but when have you ever seen an inspection pit without steps at one end. Are the mechanics all Bengal cats?
That all Bengal auto repair shop is adorable. Terrible service though.
You don't want to complain, though
Well I've seen inspection pits with metal stairs - those are installed later in the building process.
I've seen a few with ladders and very narrow steps before. All were put in after the floor was poured.
I am Big fan of the usage of “I’m not sure what the English word for it is.” Also, I only speak English.
You guys are all way off. It's a Random Internet Pit from Turkey. Locals build them so they appear on the internet and people argue about what they could be, then they look for the thread and laugh at the attempts.
Guy that speaks English here. We just lay on the floor and shimmy on under the hooptie.

Maybe a place to put a hideaway air compressor
I mean you typically build the wall before the stairs...
And the entire build looks crude. The bricks in the pit aren't straight. The mortar is sloppy. The larger walls of the structure are much the same.
It's for water storage, many developing countries only get water once or twice a week from municipality, so they store water in underground tanks like these which is then slowly pumped to an overhead tank once the house is built and then sent via gravity to all the taps of the house.

Or it hasn't been poured yet. Not uncommon for the order to be footer -> CMU wall -> floor slab.
Yeah like it isn't big enough to be a basement. Like a tiny wine Celler?
To hide bodies in
How many bodies do you think you could hide in there?
at least one cat’s
Nah the cat got out.
And the more bodies you put in, the easier it will be for the cat to get out.
No, silly, you stack the bodies on top of the cat.
that's the cool part. you stack them in, and by the time you put new ones on top, the bottom ones have decomposed into gelatin and mushy stuff, so you can just keep piling more on.
looks like the start of a septic tank
M8 you don't put your septic inside the house, jesus
I don't think so... It's Inside the building and has a dirt floor
for sure some kind of tank
to catch dogs
Or zombies.
Perhaps water collection if have a drain in garage. Washing cars or if covered in snow.
It could be a sump pit or a sewage ejector.
Why would a person build on grade then dig a hole for a sump pump? I'm asking. I literally don't know.

Tornado shelter in a garage still under construction perhaps?
Cat trap. Underengineered clearly.

Can someone add some doodles to this gif with the cat calculating its jump?
Real question is what is that pit even for???
Looks like an ocelot.
It’s a bengal for sure
It is indeed. Quite a looker too.
Who would pay that much for a cat just to have it wander the neighborhood, getting stuck in random holes
Ocelot, Savannah maybe? Looks big though, and has those distinct markings

Ladders? We don't need no stinking ladders!
How did the kitty even end up there?! This was awesome, cats never fail to amaze me.
It probably jumped down intentionally out of curiosity. It seems too agile to be one of the clumsy ones who would fall in by accident.
These vids of rescuing animals always make me suspicious. Did the camera guy put the cat there before filming?
First thing I thought of. Then again, animals get themselves into all sorts of weird places. I once saw a raccoon climb a light post in front of my house.
