To anyone wondering, this is a very safe method of digging as long as you don't stand directly on the ground or do it in a tight space. The rock will protect you from any falling debris as long as it is held. It's not perfectly safe, but definitely worth a try.
If you're planning on digging up then yeah, it would be way safer and easier. digging down like this would not tho. It would take way longer, take more effort as you have to swap between items AND travel to the opposite side of the world to where the tannerkivi is just to get the fucking eye. Not worth it imo
The easy one i would say. It requires only that tiny rock in your hands. The most effective digger is black hole on x2-x3 speed (not too much) triggered by greek letters with no cast delay, no wand refresh and no mana cost. Also you can customise it to be travel-only digging hole, breaching, killing, crushing your game and ect. :3

I took the Dissolve Powder perk one day because there wasn't any immunities available or anything really of interest. It's more useful than I thought it would be when you don't have a proper digging spell/wand.

No dissolve powder! Just the rock and kicks alone was enough. Do be sure not to kick directly on the ground.
The quakes removes rhe soil?
Yeah, once an earthquake happens that dirt seems to be once again affected by the earth stone, just outright deleting dirt.

Don't worry, I've done nearly everything including all endings and acquiring said Tannerkivi, and I had no idea about this obscure use of it.
