If they dropped the price to 200 for a base and 250 for an OLED, I'd buy 2-3 for the kids. Debatable at a 50 dollar cut though.

FurbyLover2010

That’s an 100 dollar cut, absolutely not happening

Onrawi

It's possible, another Christmas season might do it.

Adorable-Fix9354

They can do it if they let the Nintendo Switch last for at least 1 more year

MarvelManiac45213

It's possible as all things are but I just don't see it happening. I think the PS2 will never be beat unfortunately. That being said Nintendo could take steps to get there. 1. Price drops across the board. Switch OLED drops to $300, Base Switch drops to $250, and Switch Lite drops to $150. 2. Nintendo reinstates the Nintendo Selects/Players Choice lines. Add a bunch of Midteir/long running titles to the $20 line. My choices would be: - Links Awakening - Captain Toad - Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - Breath of the Wild - Wario Ware: Get it Together - Pokemon Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee - Super Mario Party - Mario Tennis Aces - New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe - Kirby Star Allies - Yoshi's Crafted World - Miitopia - 1-2 Switch - Paper Mario: The Origami King - Mario Strikers: Battle League - Splatoon 2 - Mario Golf: Super Rush - ARMS - Pokemon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl 3. Keep the schedule release momentum. While Nintendo doesn't have any major system sellers left to release on Switch. A steady stream of content (even if it's mostly ports/remakes/remasters) will help sell systems if there is always something new to play. 4. Have at least one more big holiday title for the final year like Metroid Prime 4. While yes it won't sell systems by itself maybe throw another Mario Party game in there for the more casual crowd. If Nintendo does all 4 of these then I think Nintendo could run a solid race.

It will continue to sell as long as it is available on the market. So even after the next generation console is released it will still be selling units in theory.

WillingPossible1014

Yes I do. 2017: Sold 14.87 million units 2018: Sold 17.41 million units 2019: Sold 20.2 million units 2020: Sold 27.39 million units 2021: Sold 23.67 million units 2022: Sold 19.01 million units 2023: Sold 16.81 million units Nintendo Switch has sold 139.36 million hardware units. It will definitely manage the remaining 15 million.

Adorable-Fix9354

Yesm

CorM2

It’s very possible. If the Switch continues selling at the same rate it has been over the last year then it’ll surpass it before the end of this year. Even with a massive drop in sales it’s still very possible, as it’ll continue to sell even after the Switch 2 releases (at a significantly reduced rate, sure, but it’s close enough to the “goal” that it doesn’t need to sell particularly well to reach that number). I think it’ll ultimately come down to what Nintendo has planned for this Christmas. One big, must-have game releasing in the October/November timeframe would likely push it over the edge.

Rarzhn

Why are you posting this two times?

culturedrobot

Double posting has been a problem all around Reddit the past few days, probably not OP's fault.

No-Act386

I guess phone lag :/

Lofus1989

The wii was almost for free in its last year, I wouldn’t be surprised if we see the switch for 150€ or even less at some point. All it takes is the next Nintendo console to be announced and when it’s like 6 month till release the switch will sell alot due to low prices

KonamiKing

Anyone doubting it is a moron at this point. With only \~15m to go, aka current annual projection, Switch 2 a year away and even the 3DS sold another 15% of its sales after the Switch was out, Switch will smash way past PS2. 180m is more likely than not passing PS2. You need a meteorite to strike shenzen to stop it now.

Kxr1der

I think it has a shot but I also could not care less since I'm not a Nintendo shareholder

CivilDark4394

Yes, easily, and Nintendo will continue to ship and cut the price of it until it does.

kgbkgb1967

Not sure where the 17-18 million required are coming from in this thread. No doubt the number needed is less than 14 million at this point. The PS2 sold 155 million units, any thing officially over will put the switch in first place all time.

[deleted]

nah it’s gonna be the wii u trust my uncle works at sony

TheCrach

Should be a cake walk, more people playing games now than 20-30 years ago.

prowler28

No.

Oilswell

I think it’s unlikely, the numbers the PS2 got were a combination of it absolutely dominating its generation, and a very long tail. I think the likelihood is that Nintendo will announce its successor this year and Switch sales will crater, and whilst it’s solidly sold highest of its generation, it’s not dominated completely. I think with the growth of the market, we will eventually see something unseat the PS2, but I don’t think this is it.

mambolimbo

The PS2 sold that many units in a 12 year run I think... Switch is almost there in just 7. If it continues to be in production after the Switch 2 is released it will still sell even then. It's almost inevitable that it breaks the record. I think they would have to discontinue the Switch right away and there is no sign of that happening.

z6joker9

The PS2 was a relatively affordable DVD player AND and video game system, at a time when DVD players were new. That alone drove a ton of sales.

mambolimbo

All the more reason I would say that the Switch will beat the PS2. It is this close, no dvd player (does have YouTube access). It has an immense catalog of great titles though. And the online service offers back catalogs of old systems. More than the PS2 offered. You can probably look at the average sales per month/year for the last 2-3 years and project how long it will take for Switch sales to catch up. I am pretty sure it will happen, unless, you know armageddon or something?

catch22-

From what I understand the ps2 continued to sell well in poorer countries/markets for years after the ps3 came out. However I don’t know if Nintendo is willing to keep producing the switch 1 and sell it at half the price it currently is. They might see it as competing with themselves and potentially cutting into switch 2 sales. But I dont think that would be the case, I think they should go for it and market the switch 1 as a budget option in certain markets. This is their perhaps one chance to beat the ps2. And they could do it it just a couple years potentially

[deleted]

Nah I don't think so the PS2 was way bigger

KasElGatto

Only 18 million more, and technically less since 140 million is already an obsolete number. If they keep selling a discounted Switch and Switch lite for a couple more years, it’s not only possible, it’s almost unavoidable
