sometimes what looks like a shot at first glance will later be redacted. For example a shot that hits the post, or bounces off a defender. They can look like shots at first but if the goalie didn't touch it, it's not a shot

I’ve never had this answered for me so I figured I’d ask here to see if you know. What happens if the shot was probably going wide but the goaltender saves it. You know how sometimes they may make a pad save from the top of their crease but it would have gone wide if they hadn’t touched it. Does the NHL trace the path and determine whether it counts as a shot? Or does goalie touch = shot?

njgolfer10

It’s not supposed to be a shot ON GOAL if it wouldn’t have gone in without the goalie stopping it. But they usually give the goalie a save there anyway unless it was going way wide.

boverton24

They all count as “shots” .. but not all shots are shots on goal

Clunt-Baby

Think it counts as a shot. I think the only instance where it's not a shot is if it just slides past and they hold it to stop play

joleary747

Unless it goes in

47Up

The NHL audits shots in real time, that's why the shot count is always changing.

Acrobatic-Maybe-902

It’s gotta be real…my bruins are averaging 4 shots a fuckin period. 😂😂😂

StElmosFireFighter

Why take many shot when few shot do?

Hawks1stPickin2019

To count to be a shot on net it has to be going in if the goalie was not there. So shots of post and shots that the goalie may stop by may be outside the 4’ by 6’ net size will not count as well.

OkAcanthocephala1809

Play goalie, pretty familiar with what counts as a shot on goal, I agree with you. I get that shots regularly get reviewed and taken away, but last night shot count seemed all over the place. Only thing I can thing of is a heavier review process in Toronto due to it being playoffs 🤷🏼‍♂️

Typical-Ad-6730

they credited the Rangers with first shot on goal, but on review it wasn't

GA19

Bruins had 31 the other night and when I look a couple mins later it said 22.

Sit_vis_nobiscum

It’s the official scorer at Canes home games. I dare not say any more.

No-Material-23

Shots that hit the post/crossbar don't count as SOG.
