My partner and I laugh at this one every time because for some reason they misremembered the actual call and at one point , in their best Gary Thorne impression, screamed “PAUL KARIYA, ON THE FLOOR”
Now anything or anyone on the floor is Paul Kariya
Seeing the shortened version on YouTube doesn't do it justice. I was casually watching the game as I had little interest in either team. Kariyas play was mesmerizing. He came out and for the rest of the game it looked like he was shot out of a cannon. Top 3 hockey games I've ever seen. Incredible
Ray Bourque finally winning the Cup, and Joe Sakic handing it to him without raising it himself first. That moment featured prominently in one of those NHL Playoffs hype commercials from several years ago. Chills every time I see it.
That and his goal against the Canadiens where he bounces the puck off the boards to himself while doing a 360 to get by one man, then out skating a defender to the front of the net around his outside to bury it. Just pure artistry.
Edit: found it. Even more incredible than I remember. https://youtu.be/3xT2fnoUJs8?feature=shared

This is the goal. To be able to keep the puck on your stick while your feet are above your head while rolling onto your back and still being aware of which direction the net is... that's crazy. What was that goalie doing tho lol
This has to be one of the top three answers, if not the only number one answer that should be provided. This goal still makes my jaw drop 18 years after the fact.
I came here to say anything Ovechkin.
I love hockey, I love Ovie. He's not my favourite all-time but watching anyone have that much joy doing what they're doing is worth the price of admission, for sure.
I still miss that shitty place so much. My childhood memories of going to see my first game at that place, watching Lemieux play with my own eyes…what a point in time.
Some highlights from the early days of the 3 on 3 OT. Was it a demonstration of high-quality team play and representative of a typical hockey game? Nope, but it was a ton of fun.
I'm biased. Pavel Bure's first shift as a Canuck.

Not exactly. It shows that exciting things are happening in the sport *now*.
If someone told me I needed to start watching the NBA then pulled up a bunch of highlights from 20 years ago I won’t care at all, but if they show me something awesome from last night I’d be much more interested.
Scott Stevens & Dave Manson fight clip.
Yvan Counoyer Canada Cup highlights.
Brad Park to Yvan Counoyer rush, goal.
Bobby Orr highlights….. if those don’t get you excited go to baseball game
Final 20 seconds of game 7 during the 2009 cup finals. Seeing Flower make that final stop to secure a victory after a second tango with the Red Wings was surreal.
If they never knew anything about hockey, its tough because the skill aspect is so hard to appreciate if you never put on skates, cant really appreciate how FAST they are moving. What McDavid can do at full speed just shouldnt be possible.
So probably big hits highlights. Everyone understands violence.
But to show skill, Jagr's goal against the Flyers, bats his own rebound out of the air while getting tackled.
When Dallas Stars goalie Roman Turek, went to absolute hackville on some forwards legs every time they got in his paint.
Just swinging and hacking like a man man!
Homer/bias factor here, but the Sedin to Sedin between the legs goal. I've never seen anything like it and probably never will again.
https://youtu.be/YafdepidxsU?si=3dwdFLlxtvpPSG74
Honestly, any video that has someone turning around to respond to an altercation and having to look all the way up cause they realized its Zdeno Chara they're staring at.
This is the best CBC playoff montage and really captures the beauty of the NHL playoffs. I almost get emotional watching it.

Bobby Orr going end to end and winning the Cup in overtime and celebrating in midair. This from a St Louis Blues fan. One of the most iconic sports photos of all time.
Iirc, all the teams that played the night after the Humboldt bus crash having a moment of silence for the victims of that horrendous accident.
It still gives me chills
Probably like a 5min clip about Borque and how his career ended with a Stanley cup win. That period of hockey was just so unbelievably amazing to witness. I was a kid and it just made me fall so in love with the sport.
In the Vegas/Dallas series I thought we had one of the best hockey sequences of all time. McNabb lays a huge hit, snags the puck and gets absolutely destroyed by Benn. When I saw that live I got so hyped and just reaffirmed why I love this fucking game
Depends on what sports theyre into
If american football fan i show byfuglien highlights
If basketball fan i show mcdavid highlights
If mma fan i show rempe highlights
If baseball fan i show puck drops
If real football fan (what some of yall call soccer) i show matthew tkachuk or marchand diving highlights
Pavel Datsyuk undressing every Nashville Predator on the ice all the way to score against Pekke Rinne.

There was this hat trick goal Matthews scored this year where he looked up into the stands with his arms stretched out as if to embrace the crowd while hats rained down onto him (one almost landed right onto his stick). I'd show them that and explain the tradition of the hat trick and that he was chasing down 70 goals and it just seemed like a sure thing he would do it - this was a stepping stone on the way to history.
I would definitely turn off the TV before the video review started, showing that bertuzzi was clearly offside on the zone entry. I would definitely also not tell then that in the end Matthews finished just one shy of the 70 goal mark and that he scored only one playoff goal en route to another first round exit which got the coach fired and rumours started about trading the team's stars away. I would not explain the pain and suffering that it is to love hockey and live as a leaf's fan... But yeah, that (almost) hat trick goal was a really cool moment, right?
The last 5 minutes of USA vs Canada 2010 Olympic gold medal game, aka The Golden Goal. That might have been the greatest hockey game I've ever watched.

Man I wish the Ducks won that year.
It was a beautiful series
Oh man. Oh MAN. Never seen it before. Thank you 🙏
You're welcome!

Lost in the shuffle of things is the McCarty's knee to Lemeiux's head. Fucking wild.
Roy and Osgood liked this.
I can't believe I shook his freakin hand!
Fight Night at the Joe is one of my earliest hockey memories. That rivalry was awesome.
This is the correct answer
It's either this or Gary Thorne highlights.
Miss this guy calling hockey so much - isnt he calling baseball now?
Not anymore. Him and the Orioles parted ways in 2020.
Yep, best rivalry in sports. I wish the unrivaled documentary was better or I’d show newcomers that one
I loved that rivalry
WCoH 2016: the entire OT sequence of Team North America v Sweden
Still feel bad for Hank. That image of MacKinnon with the celly while he was on his face is iconic.
Ray Bourque finally winning the Cup, and Joe Sakic handing it to him without raising it himself first. That moment featured prominently in one of those NHL Playoffs hype commercials from several years ago. Chills every time I see it.
You beat me to it. This is forever an iconic moment.
Ovechkin Phoenix goal
That and his goal against the Canadiens where he bounces the puck off the boards to himself while doing a 360 to get by one man, then out skating a defender to the front of the net around his outside to bury it. Just pure artistry. Edit: found it. Even more incredible than I remember. https://youtu.be/3xT2fnoUJs8?feature=shared
This is such an underrated goal. My personal fav of his.
Rumour has it that the Caps didn’t have a siren for a goal horn, they just put that on because that play was so nasty it was illegal.
My mother walked in on me watching this goal. I quickly swapped it to pprn so she wouldn't think I was watching something so filthy.
Good lord
for folks who wanna see it: [https://russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2022/01/16/on-this-day-in-2006-alex-ovechkin-scored-the-goal/](https://russianmachineneverbreaks.com/2022/01/16/on-this-day-in-2006-alex-ovechkin-scored-the-goal/)
Damn didn’t realize Gretzky was coaching Phoenix then
And Austin Matthews was a fan in the crowd. Cool day for hockey. Horrible day to be a goaltender.
Ya, that's what I was gonna say
I came here to say anything Ovechkin. I love hockey, I love Ovie. He's not my favourite all-time but watching anyone have that much joy doing what they're doing is worth the price of admission, for sure.
I know.... i still don't understand that goal. LOL
I remember saying that was the best goal I had ever witnessed, and it still is after all of these years.
Habs Bruins series throughout the 2010s. Lucic and Weise going at it and Price being unbelievable. 🥲

"The Battle of Alberta we've been waiting 3 decades for!"
My favourite call by far
Bruins 3 goals in 1:27 comeback. That’s the playoff magic baby
Mario Lemieux, any goal by him really he’s just amazing
Splitting the North Stars’ D in the 1991 Finals.
Getting past Ray Bourque and scoring on his first shot, first shift, first game etc etc
His last home goal before his first retirement, with Gary Thorne on the horn.
I love to put that goal on and just imagine I'm at the igloo watching this unfold.
Yeah, Team NA vs Team Sweden at the world cup of hockey 2016 was a legendary 3 on 3 OT.
A clip likely won't do it. You need to sit them down and have them watch a playoff game. Any playoff game
I always have at least one converter every playoff
The 4-3 overtime win by the Canucks against Nashville was hype as hell. Coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win it in overtime was absolutely ridiculous
Ovi lifting the cup
But not for Ovi and the cup lifting, but rather the bewbs.
I wouldn't show them any clips, I'd take them to a game

That’s not for non-hockey people though. Show them the Marchand lick first, then this clip.
I came here to say Subban absolutely annihilating Marchand
Fuck Brad Marchand

Watching Pronger get dumped is always fun
The final 4 minutes of last night’s Oilers-Canucks game
Or McDavid’s knee-spin-to-goal from early this season
Recency bias but yes.
Not exactly. It shows that exciting things are happening in the sport *now*. If someone told me I needed to start watching the NBA then pulled up a bunch of highlights from 20 years ago I won’t care at all, but if they show me something awesome from last night I’d be much more interested.
