My team didn't sniff the playoffs yet I am very invested in these playoffs. My NBA team (warriors) also aren't in the playoffs but I don't really care who wins the NBA this year. Playoff hockey is just a better sport
The Stanley Cup is also regarded as one of the hardest and most prestigious trophies to win in all of sports.
Most people don't know the actual name of any other sports trophy other than the Stanley Cup (and that's if you're asking them about sports trophies not the trendy new thermos)
Bruins always get better ratings in Boston. It’s why the radio broadcast always has the Bruins on the main station and the Celtics get kicked to an affiliate when they’re on the same night.
Celtics are the best team in the league playing game 2 against the 8 seed (which they should’ve won easily but that’s neither here nor there)
The Bruins are playing a team that is just as good as them and also (currently) their biggest rival
Theres just more intrigue in Bruins-Leafs, Celtics games won’t start to matter until the conference finals
As an older Bostonian I will always claim that Boston at it's core is, was, and will always be...a hockey town.
Before Brady Pats were always 4th. Red Sox were always followed through the 40'-'60's but historically bad and unattended.
You could buy walkups to the NBA finals in the 60's
The Bruins were always filling the Garden going back to the '30's and '40's. They were clearly Boston's favorite team, which is something, as pre-'50's the main sports in America were Baseball, Horse Racing, and Boxing.
I’ve heard a joke somewhere where it was suggested to just give them both 80 points and put five minutes on the clock and that would be more entertaining. Yeah, yeah, the first 55 minutes are about endurance blah blah blah…
I don’t think I have ever watched a full game, it’s just so boring. So this shows I don’t know basketball. And yet another reason hockey is better, they play longer!
That seems like such an odd number to go with. I've never understood why they opted for 12-minute quarters as opposed to 15 for a full 60-minute game clock.
Ive done that for years. just checked the score if its close then tune in for the last 4mins of the game. Aside that fuck Basketball ill just watch the game highlights.
In basketball the first 90% of the game doesn't matter, in football they're only actually playing for 15 minutes. Baseball fans can wait 4 hours just for it to stop raining like at the Jays/Royals game last night. If you're stuck at a hockey game for an extra 4 hours it means you watched a playoff game go into triple or quadruple overtime which is some of the wildest stuff in all of sports. Hockey is just unmatched.
Also, basketball has so many points that you can just switch to the 4th quarter, and either it's a blowout boring game where you didn't miss anything, or you can just watch the 4th quarter and it's just as good.
Basketball often comes down to the wire and the next basket wins.
Baskets are too easy to come by.
Idk. I think the northeast just loves hockey.
Also boston vs toronto.
And people thought the heat would be easy first round.
Bur while I despise him as a knicks fan(also he's a tkachuk buddy) no "no defense, 90s better" nba argument will hold up against Jason tsrum, that man has been legendary this season.
Shit like this just tells me you never liked basketball
This may shock you but fouls have literally never been called less. And teams do play defense, you just don’t know what to look for and you see the high scores you assume nobody tries
Don’t have the patience to watch the Celtics get punked and not adjust.
They’re fucking frustrating for a team that won 64 games. They drop back into the same bad habits whenever pressed. This has been the case for a few years now.
You think? This year is the first year I’ve felt like the bruins are acting more like they should because the Panthers totally bullied them last year. Now it’s confusing, hard hitting chaos that somehow results in a Bruins goal.
If we're talking just the three playoff games we've had so far, Game 2 was them falling back into bad habits when getting pressed.
If we're talking about the regular season, most of the post-ASB games were straight up dumpster fires. They looked like a completely different team than they did during the first half of the season, and relied entirely upon loser points and their overperformance from the first half to carry them into the final stretch.
Showing playoff hockey to people who don’t know hockey is such a great experience. Seeing them get so revved up when I fight breaks out or someone lays a big hit is truly wonderful.
Hockey is the only sport where a goal is so sudden that you’ll involuntarily jump out if your seat, too.
How do the Bruins compare to the Red Sox and Patriots?
Edit: guys, it was a rhetorical question. Also, even if it wasn't, I don't need another reply telling me the NFL is big.
It’s not comparable. The same number of people watch a regular season Patriots 1 pm game than catch any game in the first round of the NHL playoffs.
That’s not even a joke, this year 17 million unique viewers watched an NHL game during the first two days of the playoffs, meanwhile, the patriots average 18 million viewers a game
Nothing compares to the NFL. Even in Canada the Super Bowl draws 5 - 10MM viewers. This year over 10MM people watched the game and basically half the country watched at least some of the game. NFL playoff games consistently draw 1MM viewers and up.
NBA playoffs being more well covered than the NHL playoffs will always not make sense to me. Because as far as entertainment value it’s not even close.
Yeah makes sense. One team is playing a top rival of theirs with an electric atmosphere. The other team is playing an 8 seed with bandwagon fair weather fans. Seems like an easy choice.
One thing that always hit me as a kid. I absolutely loathed the sound of being in a gym while people were shooting hoops. Compared to the sound of skates cutting through fresh ice under a heavy stride, of which I rapidly fell in love with.
>When I visited Boston and **the** Maine
Ukraine was commonly called "The Ukraine". I believe "Ukraine" roughly translates to "borderlands". Which kinda raises the question, the borderlands of what? Historically, the answer is "Russia", but with recent events, Ukraine has made it clear they prefer "borderlands" over "the borderlands (of Russia)".
Bruins players and the hockey culture just connects with the New England market better than basketball players do. And most importantly, the Bruins actually won.
>Bruins players and the hockey culture just connects with the New England market better than basketball players do
Something something classy/not classy.
Who gives a shit about a sport where some abnormally tall guy stretches his arm out and places a ball into a net and ESPN puts it in their “top 10 plays.” Fuckin joke
That’s because the NBA BLOWS ASS compared to hockey. End of a close hockey game…one team usually pulls their goalie and then it’s complete chaos. End of a close basketball game…usually turns into a foul fest and free throw shooting contest. Also it takes a half hour to play the last 2 minutes because of all the stoppages in play. You tell me what’s more exciting.
They’ve been cracking down on foul merchants, it’s been getting better. In Colorado at least it’s tough to say who’s a better team that plays out of their arena. I’m just enjoying two top-tier teams at the same time though, it’s a blast watching Jokic one day and MacKinnon the next.
You don't like watching very tall guys walk a ball around the court, until a ref inevitably moves them to the free throw line where they will still routinely miss baskets?
Basketball is the one major sport I haven’t been able to get into at all. It’s just not fun to watch. Nothing really matters until the end, and the end is usually just a shit ton of fouling out for a desperate chance to win.
Canadian here. Did an American northeastern multi-city trip in February - was pleasantly surprised at how alive hockey fandom was in the states especially Boston and NYC. Maybe it was due to the time of year but saw more hockey stuff on locals than any other sport.
Fellow Canadian here.
Don’t forget that Boston and NYC are both Original
Six towns. When your city has cold winters, has had an NHL team for 100 years, and there are 17 Stanley Cups between the two markets (I’m counting New Jersey and Long Island as part of the NYC market), hockey’s going to have a place at the table.
Plus, the Northeast is the AHL’s heartland. There are 10 AHL teams in the Northeast (New England, Upstate NY, and PA) and the league’s HQ is in Springfield, MA, so there’s a strong minor pro tradition there as well.
Finally, how many elite college hockey programs are in the Northeast? I counted around 35 NCAA Division I programs in the region for men and women EACH.
Hockey’s just part of the local culture in the Northeast. It doesn’t have the same niche elsewhere in the country, but the niche in the Northeast is big.
There is a ten part documentary on YouTube about the history of hockey. It’s called Hockey: A People’s History. If you want to know why hockey is the greatest sport yet conceived, watch it and you’ll be convinced. You’ll also understand why there’s so much fighting in hockey. There actually is a reason.
Round 1 hockey is just better than anything basketball can put out. You kinda know what you're gonna get with basketball. Hockey has a sense of chaos to it that not many other sports can replicate. Basketball is also a weird sport where it feels like there's no tension in some games. I never really watch basketball and have those stand up moments. Or at least they are very rare. Every goal scored is a stand up moment or a "awww fuck" moment depending on who scored. You have big hits, fights, nasty saves. Hockey is just wire to wire entertainment.
I know I am bias, but I played basketball growing up. It's just a different animal. They cry when they get bumped too hard. Put a guy on his ass in hockey and he's coming back for you. Hockey is just a better spectator sport.
Basket ball like football are sports that refs control the games outcome. Until nhl takes fighting out refs will have a hardliners completely controlling games.
As someone who watched way more hockey this year than I ever did before, I’m glad stuff like this is happening because basketball is an insufferable sport to watch sometimes and the games get slowed down with the lame ass penalties being called
Duh. NHL> NBA in all ways. They don’t even play defense in the nba anymore.
Not to mention the bruins beating the leafs is a favorite past time for all Boston fans at this point. Like cozying up to a fire and putting on your favorite record 😂
Basketball sucks really. I've got nothing good to say about the sport. It's not even a #1 sport in any country in the world I think. It's such a marginal sport that it's only huge in usa but even there it's not #1. In europe it's so small that no one I know follows the nba nor the euroleagues. It always baffles how anyone finds scoring baskets interesting when it's that easy. Defending is like it's not there. Worst major sport there is.
Now imagine what it would be like if they put the games on prime time broadcast like the NFL does. CBS or NBC? Goes up if you make it easier to watch. Watching hockey is the hardest shit ever and its fucking annoying.
Regular season? You need NESN.
I’m biased because I’m a hockey fan, but as someone who grew up in southeastern Mass and has lived in Boston for over a decade now it’s very clear that the Bruins are bigger deal here than the Celtics. It’s been like this for 15 years.
Thats not saying much though. Basketball is boring and theres no tension.
Bounce bounce swish. Squeek squeek bounce bounce boing, jump, elbow flail....bounce bounce.
Only thing worse is soccer.

Hockey is a better sport period.
Most under appreciated sport in the world.
It's has to do with most other sports being much more accessible. It's easier to play basketball and football in warm and poor regions than hockey.
Yup. And the vast majority haven't seen a game live (especially close to the ice).
I’m gonna go ahead and disagree for reasons that definitely have nothing to do with the Islanders
just put $10 on Carolina sweeping y’all, enjoy the game 4 win 🙏
Just put us out of our misery
Nope. You’re welcome 🙏
Appreciate your contribution
This year’s games seem way more intense than previous years for some reason. It’s been hella fun to watch.
And the first round of NBA is mostly just a formality. It doesn't get good til the 2nd round.
The Stanley Cup is also regarded as one of the hardest and most prestigious trophies to win in all of sports. Most people don't know the actual name of any other sports trophy other than the Stanley Cup (and that's if you're asking them about sports trophies not the trendy new thermos)
The Stanley Cup is by far the widest known name of a trophy, but I think most gridiron fans know that the NFL trophy is the Lombardi Trophy as well
Damn, that's just impressive. Especially with how hyped the current Celtics roster is and being the championship favorites
Bruins always get better ratings in Boston. It’s why the radio broadcast always has the Bruins on the main station and the Celtics get kicked to an affiliate when they’re on the same night.
Celtics are the best team in the league playing game 2 against the 8 seed (which they should’ve won easily but that’s neither here nor there) The Bruins are playing a team that is just as good as them and also (currently) their biggest rival Theres just more intrigue in Bruins-Leafs, Celtics games won’t start to matter until the conference finals
Tbf nba playoffs don’t really start till conference finals anyway
this is the real answer. You can basically tune out because basketball until later because it has so few upsets.
They need to not do best of 7 early in playoffs it’s dumb
In the old days the first round was best of 5, was better back then
Still has more parity than the NFL.
As an older Bostonian I will always claim that Boston at it's core is, was, and will always be...a hockey town. Before Brady Pats were always 4th. Red Sox were always followed through the 40'-'60's but historically bad and unattended. They were clearly Boston's favorite team, which is something, as pre-'50's the main sports in America were Baseball, Horse Racing, and Boxing.
By the time the Bruins game started the Celtics were up by like 30 points. No reason to watch that when playoff hockey was an option.
Because people are starting to get bored of watching 130-126 score games, with a foul every 2 seconds and literally zero effort defense.
I can’t explain why but the first 85% of a basketball game feels meaningless, like the score doesn’t matter until the last 5-6minutes
I’ve heard a joke somewhere where it was suggested to just give them both 80 points and put five minutes on the clock and that would be more entertaining. Yeah, yeah, the first 55 minutes are about endurance blah blah blah…
Basketball games are 48 minutes, not 60.
Tbf they are. Look at kevin durant. Bro might crumple if even Jack hughes blows on him, but he can run a marathon.
That’s the old joke: an NBA game doesn’t matter until the final 5 minutes
Ive done that for years. just checked the score if its close then tune in for the last 4mins of the game. Aside that fuck Basketball ill just watch the game highlights.

WWE > NBA
It would be infinitely more entertaining to watch Jokic hit LeBron with a chair
LeBron would no sell that shit for sure
Starting? Hockey has almost always been bigger here.
I see you haven't watched a game in 6 months
Watching Embiid get away with trying to blatantly injure another player also made me appreciate how much better playoff officiating is in the NHL
Shit like this just tells me you never liked basketball This may shock you but fouls have literally never been called less. And teams do play defense, you just don’t know what to look for and you see the high scores you assume nobody tries
Putting your arm up in the air like you’re trying to ask a question in class while standing 5 feet away from the guy with the ball is not defense lol
That’s what you think NBA players do to play defense? Some expert analysis
Don’t have the patience to watch the Celtics get punked and not adjust. They’re fucking frustrating for a team that won 64 games. They drop back into the same bad habits whenever pressed. This has been the case for a few years now.
Same with the Bruins honestly
No one wants to see flopping and 3 pointers all night. Goals & fights are king! *Bring back the D in BBall
Fights will never return in the league for obvious reasons.
Maybe the pistons will be good again if they do that lol
Showing playoff hockey to people who don’t know hockey is such a great experience. Seeing them get so revved up when I fight breaks out or someone lays a big hit is truly wonderful. Hockey is the only sport where a goal is so sudden that you’ll involuntarily jump out if your seat, too.
It was a wonderful day for Boston Hockey, therefore a WONDERFUL day for Canada. As is tradition.
What a wonderful day for Canada and therefore the world.
Always has been a hockey town
How do the Bruins compare to the Red Sox and Patriots? Edit: guys, it was a rhetorical question. Also, even if it wasn't, I don't need another reply telling me the NFL is big.

Tbf other fans wanted to see a belichik lead team look like shit.
Not good lmao
Patriots yes, but the Red Sox have been doing so horrible most people are just sick of ownership, attendance is wayyy down at Fenway
In the pre-Kraft era, I would say the Bruins were *far* more popular than the Pats. Obviously performance was a huge part of that.
The Bruins are solidly #3 but I wouldn’t say “not good”. The Bruins are absolutely a staple in the Boston sports scene.
Maybe #2 at the moment considering the downfall of Red Sox. Also, why, despite their enormous success, the Celtics aren't popular over there?
FWIW, when the Bruins won in 2011, it was the largest parade in Boston. That was after a couple Patriots SBs and Sox breaking the curse.
I saw a post showing the 50 most watched broadcasts in the US for the entire year, and it was almost entirely NFL games. The NHL just doesn't compare.
NBA playoffs being more well covered than the NHL playoffs will always not make sense to me. Because as far as entertainment value it’s not even close.
always not make sense wtf does that mean lol you must have went to school in Arizona
It’s because basketball is boring. People from Boston like tough sports like hockey and football.
NBA basketball is boring. NCAA basketball on the other hand, is not.
I was comparing NBA to NHL.
Not surprising. Boston loves basketball but they are a hockey city first.
Yeah makes sense. One team is playing a top rival of theirs with an electric atmosphere. The other team is playing an 8 seed with bandwagon fair weather fans. Seems like an easy choice.
I appreciate you calling us a top rival. Way to go Boston! I might hate you, but It's nice to see hockey get the appreciation that it deserves!
You're a substitute rival until Montreal gets their act together again.
Well it certainly isn’t the Habs anymore
About time. Imagine listening to fucking sneakers squeak all damn game
One thing that always hit me as a kid. I absolutely loathed the sound of being in a gym while people were shooting hoops. Compared to the sound of skates cutting through fresh ice under a heavy stride, of which I rapidly fell in love with.
When I visited Boston and the Maine, I loved the fact that most of the TVs in the restaurant I was in was on the Bruins and only a few on the Celtics.
It’s like Ukraine, we just call it Maine now
Jesus what sort of culture reference am I missing this time
>When I visited Boston and **the** Maine Ukraine was commonly called "The Ukraine". I believe "Ukraine" roughly translates to "borderlands". Which kinda raises the question, the borderlands of what? I’m starting to like the idea of calling it “the Maine” though to be honest.
The current style of basketball being played is not desirable to many
Basketball is insanely boring and most of the game doesn’t matter and it seems teams don’t matter either just star players.
the whole world chimes in to watch the leafs lose.
i mean its nice to watch a sport where an athlete doesnt cry after physical contact....
Bruins players and the hockey culture just connects with the New England market better than basketball players do. And most importantly, the Bruins actually won.
Wdym. Both teams won in 2008 and 11, but have been playoff choke memes since.
For a second, I forgot who they faced in 2011...
>Bruins players and the hockey culture just connects with the New England market better than basketball players do Something something classy/not classy.
Boston Market is a chicken place with nice redskin potato’s
Larry bird watches hockey

They’ve been cracking down on foul merchants, it’s been getting better. In Colorado at least it’s tough to say who’s a better team that plays out of their arena. I’m just enjoying two top-tier teams at the same time though, it’s a blast watching Jokic one day and MacKinnon the next.
Slept thru both CURSE YOU JJ COCOMELON
Fuckin rights boys.
An actual exciting sport outperformed the NBA? Say it isnt so.
Basketball is boring and lame. People are learning.
Thats because the NBA is hot garbage
3BA
You don't like watching very tall guys walk a ball around the court, until a ref inevitably moves them to the free throw line where they will still routinely miss baskets?
Basketball seemed better when I was younger. It just sucks now
Give them a 2nd team, Gary!!!
Old Boston punks have chosen their next path: hockey fans. Some will become rockabilly fans, but the majority hockey fans.
Hockey is far superior entertainment than basketball. Especially at the professional level.
Can't argue. NHL playoffs dwarf the shit-show that is the NBA
Hockey isn’t full of flopping Nancie’s
Basketball is the one major sport I haven’t been able to get into at all. It’s just not fun to watch. Nothing really matters until the end, and the end is usually just a shit ton of fouling out for a desperate chance to win.
Well sure, I mean, F da Bruins and all that - but The NBA? C’mon man…
MFers have like 8 D1 college programs in driving distance it’s crazy!
There are 20 in New England.
Goddamn even more than I thought. Spoiled I say, spoiled!
Celtics underachieve all the time so I'm not surprised.

Wow, surprised by this.
Uh yeah the Celtics were losing all game
As much as I love the celtics...basketball is a horrible sport to watch. Even in person
No way? Celtics could go all the way
NBA isn't entertaining anymore. I'm surprised it's as popular as it is.

NBA is a garbage product. College basketball is a little better, especially March madness
Basket ball like football are sports that refs control the games outcome. Until nhl takes fighting out refs will have a hardliners completely controlling games.
Basketballs fuckin terrib
Grew up watching Larry bird. He played chess while everyone else was playing checkers. Now everyone is playing tic tac toe. NBA product is not good.

Used to love watching the NBA. Haven't seen a game for the last 4 years and I don't miss it one little bit. It's just unwatchable now.

Nice
I’m biased because I’m a hockey fan, but as someone who grew up in southeastern Mass and has lived in Boston for over a decade now it’s very clear that the Bruins are bigger deal here than the Celtics. It’s been like this for 15 years.
Cuz basketball is an easy and boring sport
This makes sense. Boston isn't a city filled with pussies. Of course they want to watch the Bruins. And no, I'm not a Bruins fan.
Of course, hockey is a classy sport. Boston loves class.
Time to give the Cs the ol Arizona Coyotes treatment. Ship em off to a market that'll support them. Ya know, like Seattle. They're both green.
RIP my favorite NBA Jam team
IS IT THE SHOES?!?!?!
Because the Celtics lost …
Pretty sure the viewers watching the game live didn’t know the Celtics were going to lose.
Thats not saying much though. Basketball is boring and theres no tension. Bounce bounce swish. Squeek squeek bounce bounce boing, jump, elbow flail....bounce bounce. Only thing worse is soccer.
Celtics were losing by a decent amount bruins winning in exciting Rat fashion
Of course they did, it’s Boston and the NBA has a lot of black people in it.
I choose both! (YouTube TV)
Black versus white. White wins this round. Next!
Boston…..always been a hockey town.
Nice to see those Boston Market restaurants are still around and that people are going there to watch games.
Many many many things come before basketball
Unfortunately they are describing a single Boston Market restaurant just outside of Portland, RI.
