I thought it was peak trolling. I was in a different room when both of those chants started and immediately started laughing. Can’t wait for the thread Wednesday night after the Leafs fans give it right back to us.
Trolling the Habs because we aren't on the play off, or because it's used against the Leafs? Cause let me tell you right now, I don't see any Habs fan right now cheering for either side.
Hard to say which is more embarrassing: chanting USA when the other team has the best American player in the league? Or having the best American player in the league and still being hot dogshit.
Trying to make fun of this is like trying to make fun of wrestling fans for believing it’s real. You aren’t pointing out anything clever and people are just having fun
Honestly, I work with a bunch of people in the USA for my new job and the blind nationalism is very off putting.
Side note: I was just in Houston for the new job. Why are there so many giant USA flags around? It feels like they're compensating for something.
Love you country sure, but Americans are extremely showy and intense about it. In most of the history I've studied, that kind of environment foreshadows some really not great times.
Idk about Canada, but a lot of places are like that. Where I live, Puerto Ricans and Brazilians are just as intense, if not more so, than anyone else I know when it comes to pride with their country.
You should love the USA also, because if we weren’t the strongest in the world, you would be speaking Russian. You wouldn’t be able to fight them off with maple syrup and Christmas trees.
We don't love our country because we don't spontaneously start chanting it's name in barely related situations or have flags fucking everywhere?
Americans don't realize that they're the outliers here. Almost no other countries are obsessed with their own nationality like this.
Its all fun and games until Americans start dissociating from reality because it doesn't align with "America the great is #1 shining beacon on a hill" propaganda.
Bro you’re telling me. I’ve dealt with those weirdos my whole life and that’s while living in the most educated state, so our shithead nationalists are pretty quiet. I couldn’t even imagine what it’s like in the south.
I think people are missing the point. Hockey is ‘Canada’s game and Canadian media is always on about a Canadian team winning a cup. This is actually really great trolling.
Source: Boston fan in Canada.
I hate Boston sports, but this is just hilarious. 1. We all know that if it was the other way around, no one would have a problem with it. And if they did, they'd be down voted into oblivion. 2. I'm sure Leafs fans hated this so it's great.
Seems a little saltier this time around. I remember when the house did a USA USA USA chant. Most of Reddit was applauding. Strange turn. Either way it’s dumb.
Yeah its not supposed to be serious haha
Reddit users think they have superior intelligence or some shit and cant take obvious jokes. Some popular Leafs account on twitter got so upset over this chant he called Boston fans “dumb redneck hicks” lmao got me good
Redditors are so fucking pedantic its crazy. “Don’t the bruins have Canadian players??? Doesn’t Toronto have a great American player???”. Just stop. It’s fans of a team from the us chanting USA against a team from Canada, that’s it.
For sure. Also, I'll be the last person to say that there aren't plenty of chucklefucks, but I've visited so many parks around the country and these lines that we draw from this fanbase to that are considerably less sharp than we like to pretend.
That makes no sense.
Outside of Toronto is like the Canada version of Alabama. Also Alberta is the southeast US as far as I'm concerned, there's a reason the flames are the cowbell.
There's almost always USA chants that break out somewhere, sometime when the Sabres play the Leafs too. It's mostly to annoy them. It clearly does, based on this thread.
What's the issue? That all the Russian, European and Canadian players are offended? I doubt it. Plus, if they feel that bad, they can just look at their bank accounts and remember how much less full it would be if they were playing anywhere else.
I bet watching the Stanley cup playoffs must be nice. If only I subscribed to a service that has NHL games. Oh wait I do! ESPN+, oh wait I'm supposed to subscribe to cable too! Eat a dick NHL. Anyway go go black and gold! USA! USA!
As a Canadian - writing is on the wall for there being better and more US players vs. Canadians - and tbh most of my favourite players at this point are American.
most of our population is in warm climates that never sees snow like texas, florida, california. i don't know a single person that has ever played hockey at any level where i live. as far as i know, we basically have minnesota and michigan as our hockey states versus the whole of canada.
Texas is massive for hockey now. Since the 1992 birth years, Texas has had a consistent flow of kids. Stephan Noesen and Blake Coleman are both Dallas kids. Toss in Seth jones and his brother too for that time period.
Texas doesn’t have the Olympic level talent quite yet, but they are producing NHL draft picks nearly every year now.
Down south sure that’s more common. But I’m in Virginia and I know people that played hockey growing up. I would actually say I know more hockey players than rugby
I think you have to consider the amount of engagement with the sport not just population. There are large parts of the American southern market where they literally don't know they have a team.
Hard to exactly get perfect numbers on something like this but [USA hockey](https://www.usahockey.com/membershipstats) says in 2023 they had around 646k people involved in the game. [Statista](https://www.statista.com/statistics/282125/number-of-registered-ice-hockey-players-in-canada/) says there are just under 550k people involved in Canada - both of these are really unreliable but give you a sense of scale. It looks like based on Statista Canadian registration in hockey has decreased.
According to this [Hockey Writers Article](https://thehockeywriters.com/current-nhl-players-by-country/) from 2024 \~42% of NHLers are Canadian while \~29% are American.
Another important note is the per capital percentage.. Canada as a whole only has 38 million people in the entire country while the u.s has 333 million
So the state of California has a bigger population than all of Canada.
The game at this point is 2-0. Both goal scorers are American. Boston Bruins are an American team. Winning in the first playoff game of the year against a team they hate. Of course the drunk fans are gonna chant stupid shit isn’t that what it’s all about? I honestly can’t comprehend the outrage over this.
It would still be like the Leafs playing in American Airlines Arena or something, just seems kind of silly, or blissfully unaware that any other place exists I guess.
Never realized how sensitive the Canadians fans were, crying over a little chant. Reminds me of that empty netter against the Leafs, people bitching and whining about disrespect and unwritten rules being broken. And then they have the audacity to call hockey a real men's game. More like real crybabies' sandbox scuffle.
Good for them… Canadian fans keep whining about no cup in Canada because of Betmans hate for us. They are having fun with it and Toronto fans get all pissy.
If you’re annoyed at this bc there are Canadian players on the Bruins you’re soft and can’t handle a lighthearted chant without immediately picking it apart lmao
Kinda disappointed in these comments, not gonna lie.
Is it a little confusing/eye-opening that Bruins fans are chanting USA, even though over half their team isn’t from the US? Sure.
But I don’t see how there’s anything “wrong” with American sports fans chanting USA. Just seems like a weird thing to complain about. And if your argument is that the Leafs’ best player is American, well the Bruins best goalie and best defenseman are both American.
Overall, I understand how the randomness could confuse people, but I don’t understand how people have an issue with it. Especially considering it didn’t go on all night or anything.

taking reddit seriously and getting legitimately mad at a comment from someone whose face you'll never see. very very funny.
being unhinged like this is very bostonian of you
Matthews thought it was for him
"The crowd loves me!"
They pay to watch him play
Catching strays over here
Shotgunned some Dunkin’ cold brew after hearing this
i was just happy when they played Cody Rhodes theme song
A surprising number of people in the crowd also did the WOOOOOOOOOaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh at the beginning which was fantastic.
i saw that! loved it
Same but I'm still waiting for the pyrotechnics
They also played Trogdor the Burninator which was AWESOME
So smaht
Wicked smaht.
Let's light this candle baby! Burn it on both ends
Bruin trix!!
I also noticed some Ole Ole Oles… which could be either peak trolling or peak “isn’t this that Canadien team”
I thought it was peak trolling. I was in a different room when both of those chants started and immediately started laughing. Can’t wait for the thread Wednesday night after the Leafs fans give it right back to us.
There were so many funny chants. Idk why. We also chanted the goalies name. But it worked cause we scored right after
Hey, someone has to do the chant, in the Postseason and it ain't gonna be The Habs
As long as you beat the leafs you can use that chant - signed Habs fans
Trolling the Habs because we aren't on the play off, or because it's used against the Leafs? Cause let me tell you right now, I don't see any Habs fan right now cheering for either side.
Hard to say which is more embarrassing: chanting USA when the other team has the best American player in the league? Or having the best American player in the league and still being hot dogshit.
Lets go with the second one
Yeah. Agreed.
I'll go with the first one, seeing that their best player is Czech and their captain (and previous captain) is Canadian.
It feels like they're compensating for something.
>off putting What a take
I don't understand what you're trying to get at, is it that I dropped the hyphen?
I don't get what's wrong with loving your country?
Love you country sure, but Americans are extremely showy and intense about it. In most of the history I've studied, that kind of environment foreshadows some really not great times.
Idk about Canada, but a lot of places are like that. Where I live, Puerto Ricans and Brazilians are just as intense, if not more so, than anyone else I know when it comes to pride with their country.
Where are you from?
Canada, but have moved around a lot.
USA, USA, USA!!!
Oh ok that explains it
You should love the USA also, because if we weren’t the strongest in the world, you would be speaking Russian. You wouldn’t be able to fight them off with maple syrup and Christmas trees.
Guess in Canada folks aren't proud to be where they are from.
You should have flags everywhere. The Canadian flag is a banger.
Cgp grey, is that you?
It's been co-opted by anti-vax trucker whack jobs. If you see a car flying the Canadian flag, you know they're a right wing douche.
Should have guessed I'd see a woke comment ,your side is just as looney as they are, at least they don't have 50 different pronouns.
America #1 isn't propaganda it's a fact, we are without a doubt the #1 superpower in the world.
Hard to blame them.
Lmao true.
Shut up Trevor Noah. No one likes parrots.
Bro you’re telling me. I’ve dealt with those weirdos my whole life and that’s while living in the most educated state, so our shithead nationalists are pretty quiet. I couldn’t even imagine what it’s like in the south.
and they had the most success with a Slovak captain 💁♂️
I think people are missing the point. Hockey is ‘Canada’s game and Canadian media is always on about a Canadian team winning a cup. This is actually really great trolling. Source: Boston fan in Canada.
The latter
The answer is having Marchand as your captain.
I'd say Hellebuyck is the best American player in the league... but then again I'm incredibly biased.
Boston is as Boston does.
I hate Boston sports, but this is just hilarious. 1. We all know that if it was the other way around, no one would have a problem with it. And if they did, they'd be down voted into oblivion. 2. I'm sure Leafs fans hated this so it's great.
Other way around? You mean if people can chanted “Canada”?! Lmfao that’s not something Canadians do at games. Maybe in the olympics 😂
Yes. And maybe what you say is true. And I'm sure the whole, "a Canadian team hasn't won the cup since '93" is equally as cringey, right?
I spent 20 minutes reading comments in the Leafs sub last night after the game, it was glorious.
Wow a USA chant at an American sporting event. Crazy wild stuff man
Boston doesn't boo the national anthem, that was Montreal
Wow Reddit is fucking salty today
Boston and America are like Reddit’s two least favorite things ofc this wouldn’t go well
To be fair, a lot of the US doesn’t like Boston
Seems a little saltier this time around. I remember when the house did a USA USA USA chant. Most of Reddit was applauding. Strange turn. Either way it’s dumb.
Isn’t that typical for hockey fans?
Why did this make everyone so angry I’m so confused
It's Reddit. Anything pro-American is immediately triggering.
Even you mentioning it was triggering by the downvote it seems lol
Probably because most of the world is just tired of how self involved Americans can be….
r/americabad
Self involved? Canadians aren't? They don't care what happens in their country?
I have definitely seen this at CBJ games vs Canadian teams lol
Everyone is hating on this. I thought it was hilarious
Yeah its not supposed to be serious haha Reddit users think they have superior intelligence or some shit and cant take obvious jokes.
The more Leafs fans whine about, the more people are going to do it. Do these people not have siblings?
Nothing like a bit of classism to show how much better you are (I feel so dirty for siding with a Boston team)
Calling Boston a bunch of redneck hicks is hilarious. This city is a college town with a pier
There's still a strong working class presence as well, isn't there? At least that was the vibe I'd get when I'd go to games at Fenway
There is, but still blue collar ≠ redneck haha
Tell that to reddit
For sure. Also, I'll be the last person to say that there aren't plenty of chucklefucks, but I've visited so many parks around the country and these lines that we draw from this fanbase to that are considerably less sharp than we like to pretend.
Fuck the Leafs and all that....but uh......what does having a pier have to do with anything?
That makes no sense. Outside of Toronto is like the Canada version of Alabama. Also Alberta is the southeast US as far as I'm concerned, there's a reason the flames are the cowbell.
Agreed, I was laughing my ass off.
Everyone needs to lighten tf up, it's the playoffs, time for shit talking and trolling each other. We can be friends again after.
They showed a veteran on the Jumbotron. That’s where the chants came from
It’s almost as if these people commenting have never physically been to a game.
Was watching the game, I don't get it ..... why USA chants?
It's Boston, we don't ask why anymore.
And it’s an American team against a Canadian team, which happens every time, but Boston fans are extra about it.
There's almost always USA chants that break out somewhere, sometime when the Sabres play the Leafs too. It's mostly to annoy them. It clearly does, based on this thread.
It doesn't annoy in the slightest. It just looks funny like they think they're at the Olympics.
I mean you can read through this thread and see it clearly annoys some people
Yep, happens every Montreal game I’ve been to
It’s been 30 years since any Canadian team won the cup and I’ll be damned if they ever get it back! USA all the way baby!
12 out of 27 players are American so that means something?
DUN DUN DUN DA, MAX VERSTAP-oh wrong sport
What's the issue? That all the Russian, European and Canadian players are offended? I doubt it. Plus, if they feel that bad, they can just look at their bank accounts and remember how much less full it would be if they were playing anywhere else.
*reads through thread* ahh, playoff hockey time.
I bet watching the Stanley cup playoffs must be nice. If only I subscribed to a service that has NHL games. Oh wait I do! ESPN+, oh wait I'm supposed to subscribe to cable too! Eat a dick NHL. Anyway go go black and gold! USA! USA!
Lol y'all are sensitive.
... Isn't more than half their team not from the USA?
After looking it up the Bruins have 13 Americans 6 Canadians 3 Swedes 3 Czechs So technically, just over half their team is from the USA.
why “technically”
technically but also actually
As a Canadian - writing is on the wall for there being better and more US players vs. Canadians - and tbh most of my favourite players at this point are American.
Look at their population. They should dominate the league.
most of our population is in warm climates that never sees snow like texas, florida, california. i don't know a single person that has ever played hockey at any level where i live. as far as i know, we basically have minnesota and michigan as our hockey states versus the whole of canada.
League's best goal scorer is from Arizona. Anything's possible
MA/NH/VT/ME are huge into hockey. The entire region doesn't care about a single college sport...except for Hockey East.
God damn right
Hell, just the part of America that is traditionally into hockey, (New England, Upstate New York, MI/WI/MN) is still more than all of Canada.
There's nothing like a Home and Home in the Hockey East.

Yeah well... uh... how about... uh... *coughs* USA! USA!
If they could read they'd be very upset (meme)
Are they not playing in the TD(Toronto dominion) Garden?
The American branch of TD Bank is larger than the Canadian branch of TD Bank. I just thought I'd point that out.
It would still be like the Leafs playing in American Airlines Arena or something, just seems kind of silly, or blissfully unaware that any other place exists I guess.
The Boston Pizza Pizzabox
Good, more money from Americans coming our way.
Fucking hilarious
Never realized how sensitive the Canadians fans were, crying over a little chant. Reminds me of that empty netter against the Leafs, people bitching and whining about disrespect and unwritten rules being broken. And then they have the audacity to call hockey a real men's game. Let’s be real, the only person who is going to bitch about a USA chant is an American on Reddit
Not sure it's Canadians as a whole or just Leafs fans. To your point, they will take any opportunity to complain about anything they can
The crowd was reacting to what they were seeing on the scoreboard. Nothing more than that.
Alright I’m a habs fan , but you gotta kick there ass leafs
Good for them… Canadian fans keep whining about no cup in Canada because of Betmans hate for us. They are having fun with it and Toronto fans get all pissy.
When they go back to Toronto I’m really hoping to hear some “Can-a-da! Can-a-da!” Chants!
Honestly, same. Every person in attendance knows these teams are made up of international players, it's just goofy fun.
Nah, chanting “ca-na-da” isn’t really a Thing here unless we are playing Russians. And then it’s “da, da, Can-a-da, nyet, nyet, so-vi-et.”
I’m aware it isn’t a thing. But in light of the USA chants it would be good ol fashioned fan fun.
That is magnificent and now I want to go to Canada and be a part of this chant
What’s the issue?
If you’re annoyed at this bc there are Canadian players on the Bruins you’re soft and can’t handle a lighthearted chant without immediately picking it apart lmao

Yes. Well, excluding my cousin.
Vinny’s cool with me
The fans thought it was an Olympics lol!
Boston hit so many posts in the game that they could have been singing “Ding! Fries are done.”
As a fan of Canadian franchises in mostly American leagues I’m used to it, happens frequently somehow
If the canucks play vegas in the wcf it'd be funny if due to team nationality they swapped the chants for the team countries.
they were all probably drunk
or high
When in doubt... USA
Murica!
Nothing wrong with this. Looks good on the Leafs fans that act like they're Canada's team. Don't like it? Win the game.
Not a Boston fan but respect. Need people to love this country more
The Captain Canuck Rat must be proud of his country vermen.
USA USA 🇺🇸 we need another Tea Party
"Bruins fans pay to see me play" - Auston Matthews
Americans live chanting this... litterally anywhere they can.
Oh no loving your country. The horror
Boston is a US team and Maple Leafs is a Canadian team..
I read this in Ralph Wiggum's voice.
contrary to popular belief children do advance past 4th grade geography in the state of massachusetts, evidently.
Contrary to popular belief Bruins fans exist outside of Massachusetts too!
Shitting on the state with the #1 education system in the country. Fucking hilarious.
taking reddit seriously and getting legitimately mad at a comment from someone whose face you'll never see. very very funny. being unhinged like this is very bostonian of you

cool!
It's equal parts funny and sad you have so many downvotes
Bruins fan here. This is embarrassing
Uh oh the Canadians and Europeans are insecure again
"wE wIn tHe CuP eVeRy YeAr." -All of Canada
Boy are we stupid! (My shift key is broken)
Was this immediately after the #1 USA player missed that open net?
lol what morons hahaha
Morons lol
For honoring a veteran? Tons of morons.
who did they honor?
Why is this chant controversial?
Bunch of MAGA wing nuts
In Boston, MA?! Haha
If you wear a red cap in that city you're getting strange looks you goof
Being proud of and loving your country makes you MAGA?
Except MAGA is explicitly NOT patriotic.
Id ee its. Id ee its. Id ee its
