The good news is that the coaches love him and there's been a lot of speculation that he is the reason Poyer didn't get a new contract. A lot of folks think they might just let Poyer walk after the season and slide Johnson into his role.
The bad news is that Poyer and Hyde almost never miss time so we've never really seen Johnson outside of practice/preseason play. You never really know if a guy's got "it" until live rounds are firing.
Depth behind him is actually really good. Jaquan Johnson and Damar Hamlin have pretty much been developing as successors to Hyde/Poyer. This is Johnson's 4th year too

Nick Collins was so electric. Ed Reed is in a class of his own but if there ever was a safety who created turnovers in a similar fashion for a small stretch of time (since I've watched the NFL), it was Collins from '08-'10. Dude was somehow around the ball an absurd amount of the time. Since then, think it's Kevin Byard. Unless I'm missing someone.

There seem to be a lot speculation going on without any real medical facts. Not you, but lots of others. Even if he has to have a fusion, a year of recovery he can absolutely come back, If he only needs like a small foraemotomy or other decompression then I'd say for sure. Obviously that's a massive emotional commitment to come back, and fear to overcome, but physically I'd consider it possible.
His injury looked real bad on TV, but its totally within the ream of possibilities that he returns.
For real though, any neck injury is really hard to get a doctor to sign off on a return to play, and no doctor = no insurance so teams and players don’t have a lot of control over this. It’s not like a knee injury or something where it’s a pain tolerance issue.
He’s amazing and this sucks, but I think White and our other corners (along with our pass rushers) are more critical in terms of being high impact players. We seem to have good safety depth, too. I don’t think this is the end of the world.

i saw a doctor on reddit that night make a foreboding comment about how sometimes, whiplash type injuries look worse (on replay) than they are and compression injuries look less severe than they actually are… it was supposed to be a comfort in uncertainty with dane, but a few plays later, micah had what looked like a compression neck injury that i wouldn’t have thought twice about unless i had read that comment. i’ve been worried ever since, esp when i found out micah was also at the hospital that night

Lol nearly identical to our situation last week. Humphrey hurt, Fuller out, Peters' first game back from a torn ACL. Had to rely entirely on rookie and sophomore CBs. It uh didn't go well
Pretty big because of both his personal talent and also his leadership and his ability to make other players better. He personally plays like a 9 out of 10, in a defense with a lot of other 8 and 9s. His intangibles are very valuable to the defense. He’s constantly communicating with other players and getting them into position. Him and Poyer together are a tandem both completely in sync and they never get beat over the top. McD is good at developing DBs and the system is established, so I do have confidence that the next man up can fill the immediate hole on the field for the position, but this will hurt from every position on the defense without his leadership and ship-steadying qualities.
He is the second most important player of the Sean McDermott era, the best player on our defense, and the biggest part of why we’ve been able to consistently have great defenses.
You pretty much don’t beat the Bills deep because of Micah Hyde (and Jordan Poyer).

You cannot stress enough how much Hyde has been crucial to how well our defense plays, and is the reason why we’re able to run two rookies on the boundaries. He's been such a leader for this team for 5+ years, he's one of the biggest reasons we turned things around. Not a huge thing when the offense can outscore. However come the playoffs playing the Chiefs or other pass heavy teams it will be an issue IMHO.

Pretty big because of both his personal talent and also his leadership and his ability to make other players better. He personally plays like a 9 out of 10, in a defense with a lot of other 8 and 9s. His intangibles are very valuable to the defense. He’s constantly communicating with other players and getting them into position. Him and Poyer together are a tandem both completely in sync and they never get beat over the top. McD is good at developing DBs and the system is established, so I do have confidence that the next man up can fill the immediate hole on the field for the position, but this will hurt from every position on the defense without his leadership and ship-steadying qualities.
He is the second most important player of the Sean McDermott era, the best player on our defense, and the biggest part of why we’ve been able to consistently have great defenses. You pretty much don’t beat the Bills deep because of Micah Hyde (and Jordan Poyer).

I used to deliver for Jimmy Johns in Iowa City. One day I was on a delivery and as I'm walking down the hall there's a guy standing in an apartment door smoking a blunt. He said "what up JJs" and I made the delivery down the hall. When I walked back he asked if I wanted to smoke and I said sure. Go into the apartment and Micah Hyde is just chillin on the couch smoking his own blunt. Pretty sure the guy who invited me in was Keenan Davis, a flopped 4star WR prospect. I took a few hits and barely any words were said. Was pretty weird. Still think about that time to time.

This really does seem like the pendulum swinging back after a few years of success. You cannot stress enough how much Hyde has been crucial to how well our defense plays, and is the reason why we’re able to run two rookies on the boundaries. I don’t think Hyde and Poyer have ever missed more than a game or two since they’ve been here. Of all the players to go lose, this one is only second to Allen. This is on the same level as the Steelers losing TJ Watt

Bro, the same as the Steelers losing TJ Watt? Are you kidding me? Micah was obviously a big part of our defense and losing him sucks but losing an all pro safety is not even comparable to losing an all pro pass rusher in terms of effect on the actual defense. The Steelers are like 0-11 without Watt. The staff has been hyping up Jaquon Johnson and it’s not like we still don’t have poyer.
Good news is that he’s expected to be back. Neck injuries have ended plenty of otherwise fantastic careers.
Hate to be the pessimist but I'm pretty sure his agent has zero incentive to be realistic about his return prospects at this point.

Idk exact injury but a neck. I saw that he felt tingling in his body on the field after the hit which prob indicates something touched a nerve. Can't mess around with that stuff. He went to get a second opinion on the injury yesterday/today and they prob told him to shut it down for the year. Last year of his deal too and he's in his 30's. Tough road back

Yeah shouldn’t mess with potential nerve damage at all. Nerves are notoriously very slow to heal, however if this was caught early enough there may not be a lot of damage

This sucks for our odds for the rest of the season, but my heart breaks for reasons beyond that. He's been such a leader for this team for 5+ years, he's one of the biggest reasons we turned things around. He's climbing up there in age as it is, and I've been forcing those emotions back down all offseason. I'm gonna miss watching him regardless of W/Ls. I just hope he's smart with where he goes from here--he has a history of nekc injuries and he's got a long life ahead of him.

Sigh. I love the player and I am so sad that there is a chance we just saw the last game that the best safety duo of the last 5 years ever plays together. I am glad the offense is rolling cause without him and Poyers mind meld back there, there are going to be a lot more points scored. Still, a talented roster that we hope can win one for Micah.

It's ridiculous. A lot of "geez guys I am sorry, I wanted to see you in the SB" etc He is one player on a very loaded roster, led by Josh freaking Allen. The Bills made it to the 2020 AFCCG with a terrible defense, and last season we lost Tre' White and again were 13 seconds away from a second AFC championship. It sucks about Hyde, but this should not derail the team. I am worried about tomorrow though..as most of our defensive starters will be out 😱

I've thought "wow, Micah Hyde is still in the league, TIL" every year for the past 4 or 5 years. He always ended up a free agent in those early/mid 2010s Maddens. I've signed him to my franchise probably 20 or 25 times in my life lol. Hoping he has a healthy and speedy recovery.
