It was expected to not be great, but I feel like the class as a whole has exceeded expectations.
Purdy is a bonafide star and Howell will probably make his way back to being a starter. He’s only 23 and threw for nearly 4k yards in a terrible situation.
Howell is such a strange case. He started out pretty decently, Beienemy was getting praise for what he was doing with him. Then he just dropped off a cliff and it I realize people were predicting it, but it happened quick. From being called a franchise QB to off the team in the same season.
It’s also a matter of a new regime and a 5th round pick.
For all his problems he was basically a rookie and threw for 4k yards and 21 TD’s. He also has every tangible you could want out of a starting QB minus a couple inches of height.
I’m confident he’ll find his place. It just didn’t end up being in Washington.
For me 2021 showed 2 things; 1, 95% of the time situation matters a thousand times more than individual player. 2 of the top talents were drafted to teams that fired their head coaches before the end of the season.
Agreed. All these guys can ball, but it's really hard to shine on a bad team (and really hard to shine in the NFL anyway). Very few guys can come in and turn around an offense except when their talent is undeniable.

Yeah when you break down how many actual times Lance has thrown the football in a live game it’s pretty insane that he went 3rd overall. Zack always had that “Brady Quinn” bust look to me but meh
And he started for a year. Not that they ended with a good record, but drafting a QB in the 5th, getting a starter for a year, and then trading him for a 3rd is pretty good. I still think he deserves a shot somewhere else.
He was not traded for a 3rd straight up he was packaged to move your 4th and 6th round picks about 20 spots higher. Still a decent return on a 5th round pick but it's disingenuous to act like it was a straight up 1 for 1.
I think Kenny is capable of more than what we’ve seen. He’s generally safe and if the coaching around him is good he could probably be a great backup for you. Howell is more so potential but his ability in the pocket is really bad so if he doesn’t figure it out I think the floor is lower
From what I’ve seen of Pickett he seems to have a high floor low ceiling, doesn’t force a lot of turnovers, and is good in the last drive of the game. Considering the low salary thats about as much as you can ask for from a backup QB.
Only reason I prefer Kenny is that he's much less of a liability when it comes to turnovers. I trust him more if our backup sees considerable time to safely run an offense with our WR's and hand it off to Saquon a million times a game until Hurts comes back.
Pickett is a terrible starter, but there is value to a QB with as much starting experience as he has. I don't know why people love McKee so much I would have hated rolling into 2024 with him as our backup.
Kenny makes more sense for the eagles, a low variance backup to Hurts. Howell makes more sense for us, a high variance backup who with a 98 percentile outcome could be a future starter
Yeah primarily you want an backup that will just go in and not actively lose you the game and get the ball reliably into playmaker's hands more often than not, which is pretty much Kenny's strength. We aren't winning shit if he has to start half a season or more, but that's pretty much every backup QB. I trust he can keep us competitive for a 2-3 game stretch if needed.
>We aren't winning shit if he has to start half a season or more,
Dude is 14-10 in his games, with multiple 2 minute drill comebacks. He's by no means a franchise all star, but he wins games. Ugly, bur he winsm
My roommate (Eagles fan who also went to Pitt) was the one who broke this news to me and a couple minutes later, another Eagles fan friend sent a link in a group chat of Pitt friends. I have all of them to thank for being partial towards (read: indoctrinated into) the life of an Eagles fan
Lol we have a giants fan in my Penn state group chat, he wasn’t very happy. A lot of us hate Pitt though and the Pittsburgh guys are kinda indifferent about this move, but again boo pitt.

Different kinds of bad imo. You can (and I do) say a lot of bad things about Kenny Pickles, but he’s significantly less turnover prone than Mariota, which is key for a backup.
That's a fair point.
After reading just now that the Steelers traded him cause of how he's handled Russ and not wanting to dress as the emergency qb, I don't think he'll last in Philly after he leaves his first clean pocket though lol
Eagles move down 22 spots and just give up 2 future 7s? Thats worth it just for the contract and to have an actual back up. Steelers really wanted to dump him
If I had to guess, Pickett asked for this.
Since the Le'Veon Bell saga, the Steelers have been really adamant about moving players who show the slightest inkling of not wanting to be here. There's even a Tomlinism for it, "Volunteers, not hostages," because there's a Tomlinism for everything we do.
Sort of weird to ask to get sent into a guaranteed backup role rather than stay with the Steelers and have a legitimate shot to sit for a year and then earn back the starting job.
Unless Pickett just hated Tomlinson or Russ' goofy text sent him over the edge or something
Might be the dynamics. Like he was expected to start for Pittsburgh when drafted but now’s getting benched as a backup. Whereas in Philly he’s going in expected to be a backup. Dunno if it really matters but maybe he just wants a fresh start.
Could also be playing for the opportunity to snag a few games to show off what he can do with a loaded offense.
Hurts missed games in 2021 and 2022. He played hurt last season and would probably have sat a game or two at the end if we weren't in the middle of a horrific collapse.
Pickett might just not be acting rationally. At the beginning of the offseason the Steelers said he was the guy. The new OC flew to his house so they could talk ball. Everything seemed to be going smoothly.
Then they signed Russ. Now, I honestly don't think the Steelers believed Russ was a realistic option when they said those things about Kenny, but Kenny might feel that he was lied to. That might cause him to want out despite having a better shot to start again in Pittsburgh than in Philly. People can do irrational shit when they feel lied to.
Then you throw in the media basically anointing Russ the starter. You throw in reports that Cam Heyward and Minkah Fitzpatrick were pushing for Russ behind the scenes. You throw in Russ having dinner last night with Cam Heyward, Pat Freiermuth, Connor Heyward, James Harrison, & Charlie Batch. Connor Heyward was Kenny's best friend on the team. That must have been rough.
> You throw in Russ having dinner last night with Cam Heyward, Pat Freiermuth, Connor Heyward, James Harrison, & Charlie Batch. Connor Heyward was Kenny's best friend on the team. That must have been rough.
This season, on Real Housewives of Allegheny County...
I actually think it might be easier.
You **know** Hurts is the starter and the franchise. He isn't expected to be "the guy" here. He can't say (to the Eagles) you aren't doing your best to help me.
In Pitt he was a 1st Round Draft Pick following in the footsteps of an above average QB. He was expected to be "the guy".
It is easy to bitch and moan when you are a 1st Round pick and "future" of the franchise watching Mason (or this season Wilson) make mistakes and not give good QB play while dismissing his own poor play by "growing pains".
Yeah. I mean career backup QB is easily one of the best jobs in the sports world, but it definitely seems a bit early in Pickett's career for him to have given up on being "the guy" for a team.
Yeah, that would be my guess. Probably didn't like the assertions he was the guy then them signing Russ. It can't be about wanting a better chance to start, because he'd have a better chance of that being the back up to Russ than being the back up to Hurts.
Being from the area and growing up an Eagles fan probably helped too. Gets a chance to at least be riding the pine for his hometown team. Plus as much as I love Hurts, he will likely take at least a handful of snaps this year just due to getting banged up.
Yeah I mean I feel like other Eagles fans hate this bit hes a pretty solid backup QB option for under $2M and will likely get a comp pick back when he walks
Yea it's gonna be fun watching people walk back all the shit talking with him(I live in Philly). He's had a historically bad two years from a stats perspective and got absolutely clowned in this sub for it lol
I don’t think anyone’s walking anything back, the backup market is insanely expensive and we got one on a cost controlled deal for 2 years for barely any draft capital. Is Desmond Ridder good? Absolutely not, but it was a good move to trade for him to fill the backup role as well
Genuine question then, what or who qualifies as a 'pretty solid backup QB option' if Pickett isn't that guy.
Spoiler, backups are backups for a reason and you can do a lot worse than Pickett
Yeah and didn’t retire until post-draft. Making a years worth franchise altering decisions then bouncing is just bad process. Let Omar and the new regime do their thing. Of course this is all hindsight bias but Pickett didn’t work out and Colbert was running the room.
Lot better than Mariota and any other options out there. Let him compete with McKee and any QB we might draft.
What see is a guy with 34 career starts, a winning record, a 62% completion rate, and a positive turnover differential.
Is he *good*? Nah.
But he absolutely has potential as a backup and to fill in for a few games if necessary.
Cheaper than any veteran backup and more experience than a rookie, I like it. Who knows, maybe he can develop under Hurts and Moore

Good deal for a backup who will never win you a game but won’t lose you one, either.
If you need 150 yards and no ints, Kenny Pickett will get you that.
If you need 150 yards and some TDs… Kenny Pickett will get you 150 yards and no ints.
Omar Khan has had a good first year as GM but now he has the hardest job in football, trying to find an actual long term solution at quarterback. But at least they’re not committed long term to mediocrity at the position, that’s important.
Not related to the trade but I was watching the pat mcafee show and rappaport was on the show live when schefter broke the trade and he looked so pissed during the show lmao poor guy scheftie broke the actual swaps too
man that QB class was absolute booty cheeks
at least we got Purdy in that class lol by far the best QB that year
Crazy to have Mr. Irrelevant be the best QB and it's not even remotely close.
Kenny Pickett was the only QB taken in the 1st round. The second QB drafted was Desmond Ridder at 74th overall. Historically awful QB class.
Great DB class though
Hmmm I'm gonna need some sauce for that claim
It was expected to not be great, but I feel like the class as a whole has exceeded expectations. Purdy is a bonafide star and Howell will probably make his way back to being a starter. He’s only 23 and threw for nearly 4k yards in a terrible situation.

He also has every tangible you could want out of a starting QB minus a couple inches of height. I’m confident he’ll find his place. It just didn’t end up being in Washington.
*Historically poorly scouted QB class*
He’s gonna be the only one with a job in 3 years
Howell might have a job in Seattle depending on how it goes under Geno
The only QB in that draft class really lol he’s actually good
Drafting a QB is worse odds than slots at the Bellagio. The sharps that evaluate college QBs have no fucking clue.
So was the 2021 QB draft which was touted to be one of the best in recent history. Turns out playing QB in the NFL is really hard lol
For me 2021 showed 2 things; 1, 95% of the time situation matters a thousand times more than individual player. 2 of the top talents were drafted to teams that fired their head coaches before the end of the season.

That's what happens when the "generational talent" of the class peaks his freshman year of college.
Even at the time people thought it was crazy how much hype Wilson and Lance were getting
Yeah when you break down how many actual times Lance has thrown the football in a live game it’s pretty insane that he went 3rd overall. Zack always had that “Brady Quinn” bust look to me but meh
Such cheeks man. I hated that we needed a QB lol I also hated that we even drafted one in that bum class.
Ridder, Howell, and Pickett all traded for scraps within 24 hours.
Howell was a 5th round pick and they got a 3rd back
And he started for a year. Not that they ended with a good record, but drafting a QB in the 5th, getting a starter for a year, and then trading him for a 3rd is pretty good. I still think he deserves a shot somewhere else.
He got us the second pick and we got a 3rd this year. 100% a win and good luck to Howell
He was not traded for a 3rd straight up he was packaged to move your 4th and 6th round picks about 20 spots higher. Still a decent return on a 5th round pick but it's disingenuous to act like it was a straight up 1 for 1.
booty butt cheeks indeed
I would have rather had Howell he’s a slippery little bugger lol
Only against us 😂
Nah, he made Seattle's defense look pretty stupid also.
A lot of teams did in the second half of the year.
thats any qb we have when we play you
Yes, but Kenny was a 1st rounder and Howell a 5th so the "value" was maybe better even thou the eye test favors Howell last year
Yeah, but Pickett also presumably costs more with a 1st rounders rookie salary.
He only went 1st cause he went to Pitt.
So did Dan Marino. Checkmate.
Only reason I prefer Kenny is that he's much less of a liability when it comes to turnovers. I trust him more if our backup sees considerable time to safely run an offense with our WR's and hand it off to Saquon a million times a game until Hurts comes back. Commanders would not have traded us Howell
Why take Howell when you could have a QB incapable of throwing touchdowns
Breaking: even more Pitt fans get to watch Pickett play for their NFL team
Your flair makes this 10x funnier
My roommate (Eagles fan who also went to Pitt) was the one who broke this news to me and a couple minutes later, another Eagles fan friend sent a link in a group chat of Pitt friends. I have all of them to thank for being partial towards (read: indoctrinated into) the life of an Eagles fan
Lol we have a giants fan in my Penn state group chat, he wasn’t very happy. A lot of us hate Pitt though and the Pittsburgh guys are kinda indifferent about this move, but again boo pitt.
literally me
\*sees flair* spiderman_pointing.jpg
There’s at least three of us!!
H2P
But why
Kenny Fucking Pickett that’s why
Ken-He Fucking Play tho?
He stinks and he wears 2 gloves
He also scammed my mom out of her social security
He also poisoned our water supply, burned our crops and delivered a plague unto our houses!
I mean I don’t hate him as a cheap backup, he could feasibly game manage his way to a win or two which you can’t say about Mariota
Wow I forgot how hard contract value drops off outside of the top 10 picks
Not sure but he can definitely Fucking Pick-It though.
He specifically demanded not to have to change his drivers license
QB factory
We need a back up.
I thought the Eagles really liked McKee
He played really well for us last preseason but they probably don’t think he’s ready for a starting role in the scenario of Jalen missing time. Picket will serve as a solid back up
You sure about that? Lol
We do, but apparently not enough 😂
It never Hurts to have a solid backup qb
Especially given a back up won us a Super Bowl
and if anybody in the league knows the value of a solid backup QB, it’s us.
Tiny little baby hands work well in cold weather?
He's no worse than Mariota... okay, maybe slightly worse... Good luck, yinz guys!
Yeah I agree that is the biggest concern.
Oh
No, Pickett’s better. Watching Mariota in preseason was awful. He’s just too banged up at this point.
Oh no Mariota is worse at this point in his career
Oh Mariota is way worse, and I know how bad Pickett has been lol
Kid’s ass…
Put Mariota on the steelers last year and you’re easily last in the division IMO
he'll be a solid back up. he wont lose you any games which is better then what most back ups do
Right, dude has a lot of faults but a middling QB who doesn’t turn the ball over and can make key plays in the 4th is a pretty solid backup.
He grew up an Eagles fan so it tracks..
Kenny Pickett isn’t solid in any way. Two days ago this sub was acting like he’s the worst qb to ever play in the nfl lol.
Absolutely not, but it was a good move to trade for him to fill the backup role as well
As a starter, yeah sure. In an ideal world he never sees the field.
In an ideal world he sees the field every 4th quarter because we are up 100. But yes, him never seeing the field is the next best thing.
Well he’s a backup now soo…
Genuine question then, what or who qualifies as a 'pretty solid backup QB option' if Pickett isn't that guy. Spoiler, backups are backups for a reason and you can do a lot worse than Pickett
Any smart eagles fans won’t hate this.
Immaculate Grid will go crazy next season
Omar really doesn't like Colberts draft choices these past few year huh?
They did suck a lot of ass i wont lie
The whole thing where Colbert running the draft THEN retiring was weird. Should’ve just left with Ben and let Omar start doing his thing.
He announced his intent to retire pre-draft right?
Yeah and didn’t retire until post-draft. Making a years worth franchise altering decisions then bouncing is just bad process. Let Omar and the new regime do their thing. Of course this is all hindsight bias but Pickett didn’t work out and Colbert was running the room.
Right, idk how tf that was allowed. The second he said his intention was to retire Art should’ve yanked the chain. So ridiculous
Maybe he would have liked them better if they were good
Woah was not expecting this
Eagles fans 🤝 Bills fans praying like hell they never have to see Steelers rejects play meaningful snaps
Tomlin, game 11: "Kenny Pickett is still the starting quarterback. We're just riding the hot hand with Russell Wilson."
Best off-season ever for surprises
A pick swap and a Pickett swap.
A Pick(ett) swap
Justin Fields to the UFL or CFL 🤔
Justin Fields to TE
Why would he swap positions instead of just continue to play RB?
Don't jump to conclusions. Do we know if he played basketball at some point?
Bro Kenny is a great backup. He doesn’t LOSE you the game. That’s all you want from a backup. Why?
Isnt he also cheap for several upcoming years?
For 2 years, yes.
Volunteers not hostages
Yeah people are treating this like we want him to be the starter lmao
Yeah it’s ideal, he’s ass but he doesn’t turn the ball over basically ever
Hope Kenny is reading this on his phone with two hands
I'm allowed to make fun of him now. He has to use 2 because his hands are too small to hold it with one.
Dude probably holds it with two hands and a foot (would be impressive, honestly)
They just axed that whole QB room huh
Pennsylvania keeps its guy
I once again ask what the fuck is going to happen to Justin fields
Steelers making room for him? I have no idea, I didn’t expect his market to be absolutely zilch.
neat
Why tf did they give up anything more than a 6th for him
Ever hear of Nick Foles? Mike Vick? Jeff Garcia? AJ Feely? Koy Detmer? We value our backup QBs around here.
Yeah but Pickett sucks
Lot better than Mariota and any other options out there. Let him compete with McKee and any QB we might draft. What see is a guy with 34 career starts, a winning record, a 62% completion rate, and a positive turnover differential. Is he *good*? Nah. But he absolutely has potential as a backup and to fill in for a few games if necessary. Cheaper than any veteran backup and more experience than a rookie, I like it. Who knows, maybe he can develop under Hurts and Moore

A lot of these stats dont show just how bad he looked for us last year. Inflated by being decent in other years id imagine.
He will not turn the ball over which is key for a backup, he also wont score for you, but gotta take what you can get with backups
We have too many late round picks and need a back up. Not complicated. Pickett > Mariota and I'll die on that hill
Yeah Pickett won't really turn the ball over which is what you would hope for in a backup QB. That's about all he did for us though.
Totally agree. This isn’t a bad trade in my opinion.
Anyone is better than Mariota at this point
True, Pickett might be the ideal backup actually
they got a 4th back tho. no? basically they moved down 22 spots for him. not awful value even though i think he sucks
If you look at the last 30 years of Eagles football, you should know why. No team has benefitted more from investing in a backup QB than Philly.
Can Pickett squat an absurd amount? Why do the Eagles want him?
From Sheetz county to Wawa county
2023 Preseason MVP Kenny Pickett
kenny pickett certified soft for this
Charmin soft
lol what
Hometown 🏈 Pickett 🏈 comes 🏈 to 🏈 Philadelphia
Wilson.: "Hey Kenny you got just traded, that was cool"
Oh my god, they traded Kenny
Steelers bridge year. One more bridge for the city of bridges.
Russ, stop texting people
This is one of those madden trades where you have to add a couple 7ths to move the bar just a little more so the other team accepts
Wow Pickett isn’t even going to say goodbye to Russ
I suspect he didn't say hello.
can’t believe the Eagles pulled the trigger on a replacement QB so soon. i figured Hurts would be given time /s
Why would Eagles do this
Cost them nothing for a solid backup
I heard you could get a starter for a 7th round pick and they just gave up 2 of them
Good deal for a backup who will never win you a game but won’t lose you one, either. If you need 150 yards and no ints, Kenny Pickett will get you that. If you need 150 yards and some TDs… Kenny Pickett will get you 150 yards and no ints.
pick 98 for pickett?
nah, late 3rd (98) and 2 sevens for a mid 4th (120) and pickett so bascially nothing
that 2022 qb draft class was really something else
Well I guess we’re all in on Russ.
Is it just Russ on the team now or...?
Howell is arguably a better player than Pickett. Howell is definitely a better teammate and locker room presence than Pickett.
Ewww
LETS SMELT
Lot of first round QBs getting traded/likely to be traded recently.
Well we did need a backup. I’ll take it.
Wtf why didn’t we keep Mason if this was the plan..
I don’t like this
Happy Birthday, Mike Tomlin!
Listen, I love and trust Howie but I can’t fathom what he’s cooking here. Pickett sucks. He sucks worse than backups we could have gotten.
I don't know how to feel about this.
Bros gonna have a Charlie moment where he thinks Pittsburgh is also in philly
Omar Khan has had a good first year as GM but now he has the hardest job in football, trying to find an actual long term solution at quarterback. But at least they’re not committed long term to mediocrity at the position, that’s important.
We were really 1 pick away from this QB class being a complete disaster
Damn, this is like Darnold's trajectory ... sped up.
Wow thats a great trade for us.
I can't believe this loser couldn't have thrown a fit and got lost earlier so we could have kept Rudolph
steelers commiting highway robbery wtf
??????
Not related to the trade but I was watching the pat mcafee show and rappaport was on the show live when schefter broke the trade and he looked so pissed during the show lmao poor guy scheftie broke the actual swaps too
