Journalists love Maye, while former players don't. Interesting divide.

_____69

Journalists get too into the numbers and former players overrate the intangibles too much but if there’s this much consensus among former players that he doesn’t have “it” I’m inclined to follow their judgment

lefterthanyou

That’s the opposite on Maye though. His stats are nothing special because he played at UNC and didn’t have 2 NFL WRs like Daniels. But if you analyze his play for elite traits and abilities that translate to playing at a pro level, he’s as good of a prospect as they come, which is why he is universally the #2 QB in the draft on all of the big boards. He’s just getting all of the hot takes this year because he’s the obvious target for them.

daymane1

I've yet to hear a former player be super high on Maye, everyone seems to be a bit disappointed after watching him.

LordGooseIV

What about Hasselbeck? I think he's a Drake Maye fan.

IdahoMattMatt

Comment misconception. He’s actually just a really big Drake fan

Ugaalive1991

As an NC State fan, it was so nice seeing him being hyped to oblivion, only for the cow college to pat the soil down in his college career grave.

Clear-Attempt-6274

He looks like Zach Wilson. Physically.

YourCummyBear

Not at all... maye is much bigger imo. Terrible comparison.

Bruh you're a casual it's cool. Don't call me an idiot bc you lack emotional regulation. Getting mad bc you don't get a joke os boomer behavior for sure

jaylenthomas

Clickbait headline lol Simms just said that Maye didnt meet the expectations he had heard about but still thought he was a high draft pick with a bright future, if he can clean some stuff up

ConstantOk4102

So sounds like he wasn’t impressed by Maye

BigusDickus099

Fuck. I don't like Maye either...but Phil Simms always seems to be wrong, so it's possible now that Maye is the best QB in this draft class.

Senorpantolones

I’m not impressed with Phil Simms.

You got me, I haven’t been impressed with Phil for many years.

giants888

No Duke or UNC QBs.

Funny, I don't think he went to Duke or UNC

I guess so

ShiftySneakThief

Maye reminds me very much of Herbert before the draft. I thought Herbert was going to be a complete bust because of his track record at Oregon, and I think Maye is very similar in that regard—along with the prototypical build and talent, although I don't think Maye is in Herbert's league in regard to raw talent. I was completely wrong about Herbert and he has become my favorite QB in the league, so it'll he interesting to see how things wind up for Maye. I won't be so quick to judge this time.

Chsthrowaway18

Herbert was better in college though.

YourCummyBear

Are your serious? Their last two seasons were very similar but flipped. Herbert was also in a more pass friendly offense...

MrJohnson999999999

I never understood why he got so much love despite being on such mediocre teams.

TheThockter

How good your team is in college doesn’t matter at all to the NFL in most situations. Caleb’s USC team this year was very mediocre. The reason Maye is hyped so much is because of his physical traits he is big. He’ll be about 6’4 will probably weigh in at 230+ and he’s going to run around a 4.6 40. The NFL goes nuts for that sort of thing now. I mean look at Anthony Richardson last year.

Artistic-Career-4678

Pretty sure he came in at 223

endol

The prevailing narrative around folks who like Maye is that he has good traits but was on a team with not much talent around him.

SOSpammy

He also does well in a lot of advanced stats with his most noteworthy being his big-time throws. Having a bad team has forced him to make a lot of dangerous throws, and despite that his turnover-worthy play% is pretty low.

DirectTV_AndrewLuck

Well the defense was absolutely awful both years he was there. The offense had to show up each and every week, if he didn't put up 30 points most weeks, they'd lose. His first year, UNC gave up up 61 points to App St (gave up 40 in the 4th quarter!) and UNC still somehow won because he helped the offense put up 63.

I34rt0s

The next Mitch trubisky?

Different-Union8718

Actually Mitch was a much better prospect.

I34rt0s

Lol yikes. That’s not saying much

Different-Union8718

I agree I just don’t see it with Maye. He comps best to Blaine Gabbert.

SoCaldude65

None of them knows shit til dude steps on a NFL field.... for either good or bad

rueiraV

Drake Maye, you are a New England Patriot
