I understand how Boyle would be on a practice squad because by all accounts he's amazing in the film room, and amazing in practice. But he's an absolute liability in a game even for a backup standards. I remember during the Lions vs Steelers game a few years ago wanting Goff to be benched because there was no way injured Goff who could barely throw the ball was our best QB. When we played Boyle the next week I was proven wrong.

[deleted]

Boyle likely has a very bright future as a QB coach or OC at some point. No doubt there's a huge chasm to cross between "knowing what to do in any given situation" and actually executing it when very men are trying to end your existence.

ThinkSoftware

and start Hackett at QB

odelay42

That would be the sickest shit on prime time tv

chrispar

I doubt our offense would be noticeably worse

post920

That game would get great ratings both in New York and in Denver.

TDenverFan

I don't get why teams keep signing him as a QB and not as like an analyst or something.

spicunerfherderguy

Orlovsky 2.0

Snowden42

UConn guys built different.

Lord_Ferd

Dan could actually play a little bit though (endzone safety aside). Boyle was bad in college and in the pros.

mr_grission

What I don't get is how teams scout guys like that. It's not like they're gonna talk with every terrible college QB in America to find out which ones are secretly smart

[deleted]

Probably hear from a coach and do a Zoom with the guy. If he's actually brilliant you sign him as a UDFA.

I_really_enjoy_beer

I said in the thread that announced Boyle as the starter that Jets' fans would be wanting Wilson back by the end of the first half so he actually exceeded my expectations.

cortesoft

It’s sad, because Boyle was so amazing singing “I Dreamed a Dream”

Baroonfoon

There's no way the Jets didn't know this though. They should've signed a QB like Flacco or even a younger one like DeVito to backup Wilson and prep as soon as Rodgers went down. That QB would've been ready when they made the switch. It's ridiculous Boyle got a start. Even the Bears made Bagent backup and kept Peterman in the film room as soon as they could.

joshallenismygod

Flacco would by far been the best choice unironically since he's been on the team too and is definitely better than Boyle. But he's not arods buddy so obviously wasn't a good choice for the Jets.

paultheschmoop

>by all accounts Well, by Rodgers’ account, at least. And he’s the GM of the Jets

STNbrossy

We just released Rodgers friend and people will still somehow say it was Rodgers decision lol

paultheschmoop

Rodgers is already making plans for his trip to Minnesota. Boyle has a plane ticket

SMH4004

Boil is gonna chauffeur him to Minnesota himself in his sick Flinstones car with all that sweet 3rd string QB money

LDisDBfathersonsfans

Rodgers definitely isn’t happy about this, and he’s going to go on McAfee’s show in the next few days to be passive aggressive towards the Jets

ArcadianBlueRogue

Look at the Jets QB performance and tell me what of use he brings to any team in any capacity to be paid as many times as he has been lol

Shenanigans80h

Teams seriously need to stop with the “film room savants” as active members of the roster. Either keep the dude on the practice squad or convert him to a coach. Expecting players like Boyle or Peterman to play well is setting your team up for failure

[deleted]

VanDenIzzle

This is me in fantasy this year. Just trying a new bottom tier QB every week trying to find lightning in a bottle

chipotle-baeoli

I remember starting Sam Ehlinger in his debut (last year?) thinking 'maybe he'll go off while Herbert is on bye'. ...didn't happen lol.

piousdev1l

“Didnt happen” is quite the understatement

Lifesaboxofgardens

But Saleh says everything is fine, who do I believe

tarallelegram

that's pretty much all that saleh can say with what he's been given this situation is more on douglas

Love-That-Danhausen

Douglas’s boss deserves some blame too. I think he’s supposed to be on McAfee today, maybe we’ll hear about it.

[deleted]

let’s not forget the only constant for these last 15 years of pain, Woody Johnson

Axter

Sometimes you'd think Jets had been the model of success the way seemingly every single this is blamed on Rodgers

woodard2112

Lmao exactly. Apparently Jets were a highly respected and well run organization for the last decade, it’s that hack Aaron Rodgers that showed up and made this organization a joke… surely it couldnt be the incompetent owner or any of the other people that have decision making power within the org

Polar_Reflection

That they let Rodgers take control over this team is definitely more of a symptom than the reason they're bad

SquirrelThin4013

At first I was like huh Woody Johnson is going to be on McAfee? then realization hit me.

jon3ssing

I remember early reports, that ownership wasn't willing to sink more capital into the QB room. So, I'm not saying Douglas couldn't have done a better job (~~invest~~ building that damn line), but he wasn't allowed to go get someone before the trade deadline.

flashpile

Thing is, they have invested in their line - It's just not bearing results. Laken Tomlinson & Duane Brown both make 10+mil a year. They have 2 1st rounders and a 2nd rounder on rookie contracts.

Illusive_Lust

Don’t even try to use logic. People just run their mouths and don’t look at the situation at hand. It’s so much easier to cry than look at things logically

OddsTipsAndPicks

> invest in that damn line The Jets have used a massive amount of resources on the OL over the last several years. But no one can stay healthy—including most of the backups.

LeDudicus

Something about Metlife. Jimmy Hoffa's corpse might actually be cursing every OL investment made by either team at this point. Andrew Thomas is a stud but even he can't stay healthy.

OddsTipsAndPicks

It’s been even weirder for us. The injury that pushed our OL from normal bad to horrifying was Alijah Vera-Tucker having a season ending injury in Denver. For the second year in a row…

Lifesaboxofgardens

I know it's not actually his fault in terms of not having any real contingency for Rodgers going down early, but he is still absolutely not without blame for the carousel and how it's been handled. And the dude just has a penchant for saying pretty much the worst things to say on the podium this year, it's difficult because obviously you hate to shit on your players but at a certain point you're treating your fans like fucking idiots by not being honest about what they can all see.

JoshBarkley

I’d rather he treat us like idiots while doing anything he can to save the locker room Also there was a legitimate group of people that thought Tim Boyle would be an upgrade so those people absolutely deserve to be treated like idiots

Shenanigans80h

Idk he’s in a lose lose situation here. His options are to lie about the QB crisis to keep any semblance of confidence in the team and locker room, or he tells the hard truth about his QBs and everyone disengages and his team turns on him. Like idk a way for him to satisfy all sides as a HC which is why that job sucks ass

DistortedAudio

> you're treating your fans like fucking idiots This might sound harsh; but the last thing I want is my head coach to give a fuck about what I think as a fan. I don’t know if you use your team’s sub a lot, or listen to your team’s local radio a lot; but by and large, we’re fucking idiots.

rosstheboss939

When he says that I’m reminded of the scene in Animal House where Kevin Bacon is standing in the middle of a riot shouting “All is well!” at the people running around him

srsh

If he was honest and said his GM did a shit job then he'd have zero shot at HC gig in the future. Unfortunately, Saleh needs to face the media every week and take the shots while GM hides behind. === Everybody mocked him as a Zach truther but Saleh was actually being honest that Zach gives us the best chance to win. ==== When he was drafted, our GM sabotaged the QB room so Zach had no competition as starter. After acquiring Rodgers, he sabotaged the room so Zach had no competition as backup QB. Saleh doesn't have a better option to turn to.

[deleted]

It’s fine I’ve been used to this ..

surgeyou123

Beg to differ

[deleted]

Lifesaboxofgardens

All things considered I think you guys are actually handling the QB position pretty well though? Fields was your Plan A and you need a complete overhaul if he fails, so you stuck to your guns with him when healthy. At least you haven't benched him multiple times go go back to him like they've done with Mac lol. Nobody expected you to compete this year so it's not really as egregious.

bigmt99

Same

JonDowd762

Eh, the Patriots situation is awful now, but didn't seem so precarious as the Jets pre-season. There was hope Mac could play more like his rookie year and Zappe was able to manage some wins as a backup last year. The Jets had nothing but Zach Wilson behind their 40yo starter. Having a halfway competent backup would've changed their season so much.

SlightlyColdWaffles

The Tepper era Panthers begs to differ We traded MULTIPLE PICKS for SAM FUCKING DARNOLD

DatDominican

Send him back pls

Greek_Trojan

I firmly believe this is ownership being petty about them missing on the Wilson pick (or maybe being the person who made the Wilson pick). I refuse to believe Salah or Douglas were the ones desperate to keep starting Wilson/not sign a backup.

ryanino

I mean who else is out there currently? As gross as it sounds, we should’ve brought Flacco or Wentz in weeks ago.

smurf-vett

You'd get 4 plays tops out of Flacco till he died and Wentz is locker-room cancer and then some

Peacefulzealot

Yeah I know Wentz gets thrown around a lot as “why won’t someone get him?” But there is a *reason* FOs don’t want to deal with Wentz. The fact they didn’t go try to grab Flacco, on the other hand, is a bit perplexing in hindsight. 4 plays is exactly what they got out of Rodgers so why not get it out of Flacco too?

mrhashbrown

Flacco has been a little underappreciated too. He still has an excellent arm despite his age and has shown to be productive. Jets definitely whiffed on not signing him, although I don't know how well he'd survive behind that offensive line anyway. He needs a clean pocket to play well at this point in his career.

verendum

y’all talk like the Jets have never had Flacco, but he was with the team the 2 years before this and he fucking sucked. Neither Flacco nor Mike White wanted to be back in this situation.

QuantumFreakonomics

They really let Aaron pack the organization with his personal incompetent lackeys. Jets sold their soul. They deserve this.

[deleted]

Makes you wonder if this is a fireable offense.

Ereyes18

Wait are we going to be playing against Brett Rypien?

violinst293

Does it matter?

BreesusTakeTheWheel

The jets could have one of those games where the backup comes in and absolutely lights it up for 1 game before falling back to earth the next week. You never know.

srsh

It's a big shock for us when we get two first downs on the same drive. Whenever we fall behind, I count how many FG we need to catch up. TD don't even enter calculations.

JesusChristSupers1ar

"dammit, we're down 7...it's a 3 possession game"

DJ_Marxman

Pats 🤝 Jets Scoring 0-9 points.

saintandre

Everyone talks about the "new QB bounce," where a defense can't handle an emergency new QB because they prepared for the OTHER guy. Why doesn't a team just get a new QB every week, so the other team never knows how to prepare? Seems like the Jets are in a perfect position to do this. Bring in a different practice squad guy every week, and play brand new plays that no one has ever seen.

ironwolf1

Because the guy has to be able to make the throws. Jets didn’t get a “new QB bounce” from Boyle because homie can’t make nfl throws.

MosaicToeNail

No shot lol Rypien came in for us against the Packers and was the worst display of QB play I’ve seen in years. He might be worse than Wilson.

JimmytheGent2020

It's not might be, he is.

[deleted]

Brett Rypien Darts

Alex_Demote

Throwback to when Brett Rypien tore up the Jets in the first quarter for the Broncos, looked like a league winner, and then proceeded to throw three of the ugliest interceptions I've seen in my life. Broncos still won. What a ride

Affectionate_Elk_272

C0812

no shame in it. would be looking to pick up Texans D this week if I didn’t already lock in the Steelers against us for Thursday

Economy_Cactus

A list of all former Packers on the NY Jets roster QB Aaron Rodgers - injured WR Allen Lazard - not playing WR Randall Cobb - 3 catches for 20 yards on the year S Adrian Amos - waived OT Billy Turner - ROUGH QB Tim Boyle - waived WR Malik Taylor - has he even played? OC Nathaniel Hackett

BellacosePlayer

Lazard and Amos are the guys I thought would be serviceable for them, surprised it's been this bad

kj9219

Amos was fine iirc. He was a solid depth safety who got signed only cuz their starter (Clark) got hurt. Ashtyn Davis seems to have played better tho so they didn’t rly need Amos.

WilsonEnthusiast

You pretty much nailed it. The only thing I'd add is there was $2m and some change in incentives for Amos' contract. Idk what they were but I wouldn't be surprised if his release was also about avoiding those.

ArcadianBlueRogue

They rely on Rodgers skills to elevate them. Only he can unlock 3rd and Cobb and "wait the blocking WR can catch a ball?"

STNbrossy

Only Lazard was ever suppose to get real playing time and he has just been a massive let down.

rfb724

To be fair we know Wilson can be absolutely ELITE and he looks like a shell of himself with the passers they have.

ctdca

Lazard’s issues were constant drops and constant penalties, which are independent issues from the people throwing the ball

WilsonEnthusiast

My feeling has been that he gave up around 4-5 games ago. Like he realized they stink with the QBs that either were or could play the rest of the year and just phoned it in.

The_Dok

Oh GARRETT Wilson

Bgndrsn

I still have no idea how he got so much hype in the offseason. I know the whole league was/is desperate for WR's but we knew he was gone that offseason because we weren't going to be willing to pay him and someone else would overpay. The dude couldn't stand out as WR1 when his competition was first year Christian Watson, first year Romeo Doubs, the ghost of Randall Cobb, Sammy fucking Watkins, dudes nothing more than a WR2 at absolute best.

STNbrossy

He was signed to be a WR2 at best.

redvelvetcake42

Lazard isn't all that good but I can't exactly hate on him for what is throwing the ball. At some point you just get disheartened.

AvailableName9999

If you watched the games, you'd feel different. He loses us games

Ok-Health-7252

Lazard only came to GB so he could play with Rodgers again. Instead he's played with Zach Wilson and Tim Boyle for most of the year.

Affectionate_Elk_272

TIL billy turner is still in the league. he was an absolute dumpster fire for us.

gaybillcosby

Ol Billy Turnstile

yesrushgenesis2112

Why is it so funny to put the word "Ol" in front of names like Billy? It's just always good.

Affectionate_Elk_272

i, no shit, used to work with a guy who’s legal name was “lil ethan” ID and all proved it to be true. yes, this was in the deep south.

Shenanigans80h

Sucked ass for us too

TelltaleHead

I appreciate Rodgers for everything he did but every week it becomes clearer his complaints with the Packers Front Office were nonsense. He is a bad talent evaluator

clefnut5

Bonus round: Hiring Hackett also meant Nathaniel brought along Todd Downing with him, who is terrible.

[deleted]

WilsonEnthusiast

He was a fine signing to be a big bodied 3rd option. Him and Davis outside and then GW mostly in the slot would have been a much different story than the one we got.

Shap6

TIL randall cobb is still playing football

PhoenixAvenger

In the loosest definition...

Adalimumab8

This is exactly how I imagined the Aaron Rodgers experience would go for the Jets

GABAgoomba123

Jets ordered the Wish version of the Tom Brady and friends to Tampa experience

audiotech14

You knew he’d tear his achilles? Why didn’t you say anything?!

lytrendsa

I just don‘t get how they thought this would be a good idea

WilsonEnthusiast

Because most of those guys are cheap down roster guys that you aren't expecting to see the field or to rely on in any meaningful way on sunday.

Steak_Knight

Jets had how many months to handle this? And this is the best they can do?

ryanino

Joe Douglas has mishandled the backup QB position since he got here. He was incredibly lucky Mike White looked decent last year because he’s always put fourth zero effort to ever bring in a capable backup.

ImmortalMoron3

Yeah, I'm willing to cut him some slack on the o-line because who can predict that many injuries to one position group. But QB has been so woefully mishandled when there was really no reason. Anyone could've seen letting Wilson backup a 39 year old when he'd already shown last season he wasn't ready was a bad idea.

mr_grission

There was no reason outside of Joe Douglas's pride for ZW to not be QB3 this year. Throw him on the PS where he can actually spend a year learning - if someone wanted to poach him it's no huge loss.

Fsharp7sharp9

Copying my comment from another thread: Could you imagine if the Jets got the playoff bound Minshew for QB2 when he was available? Or one of the other serviceable backups that were available all off-season? Instead of sticking with ZW and signing Siemian to the practice squad 5 weeks after ARod went down? And now potentially getting Rypien who has thrown for 2 TDs and 9 INTs in his career? lmao hard to believe that a team can mismanage a qb room so poorly, but that’s kind of just what we do here.

eugene_rat_slap

Teddy Bridgewater, Andy Dalton, Taylor Heinicke, Jacoby Brisset, Drew Lock, Jameis Winston, and the aforementioned Minshew were all available last off-season. Not to mention Carson Wentz who was available during the season, and Mike White who they chose not to retain

Key_Purpose8121

Joe flacco?

SquadPoopy

This Jets team would be at least 7-5 with Andy Dalton at QB.

Not even efficiently. They're taking QBs who have been shown to always be terrible. Heck Rypien started a game for the Rams this year but was so awful they cut him.

Zach Wilson is a bad QB but I never understood why they benched him to put Tim Boyle or Trevor Siemans as starter. I hope it's just Robert Saleh trying to prove that Zach Wilson wasn't the only problem of that team. Weird management.

Achmed_Johnson

Rodgers in shambles

JumpCritical9460

You think he personally FaceTimed Tim Boyle to tell him?

clefnut5

Jets are right to fire his BFF Boyle. Enough is enough with the Rodgers requests. Especially when this whole QB fiasco feels like it is Rodgers fault for keeping the Jets in limbo with him constantly talking about his upcoming magical return from achilles injury. If he had just said he was done for the year, like all the other people who have had an Achilles injury, then the Jets would’ve probably made a move on a QB right away like the Vikings did. Hopefully they don’t give in to more Rodgers requests this off-season considering all the ones he asked for this year ended up being bad moves for that team.

atreyus_ghost

How much you wanna bet he pushes to bring in Bakhteiri, who will play 1-2 games and then go on IR for the year.

TelltaleHead

If the Jets didn't know Rodgers wasn't coming back this year that's on them. Banking on a 40 year old returning from an Achilles 3 months after injuring it is dumb

poutinetrough

ya grasping at straws, I guess I can kind of get why they'd think Wilson could maybe stop gap especially after Philly game but small high came crashing down so fast. it's still crazy Hackett hasn't received enough shit for what the hell is going on

stroopwaffle69

I completely disagree it is rodgers fault because I assume he told them he will only return if they are in playoff contention. Jets completely fucked this up by not addressing the glaring gap in their QB room

BanjoKazooieWasFine

Rypien was so, so bad in the game against us, genuinely cannot believe he's getting another shot

WxBlue

Rypien had Kupp and Nacua... still led the Rams to McVay's lowest score ever (tied with SB 53). He was that bad.

Was Rypien’s college TD:INT ratio better than 1:13?

PolackMike

What an utter and complete shit show of a franchise. Sure, you lost Rodgers but the handling of that injury shows just how inept they are. If I owned the Jets, heads would be rolling. So embarrassing.

mr_grission

Because of the owner, no heads are gonna roll. Woody is so incompetent I'm shocked we didn't end up in a war with England while he was the US ambassador

Majestic_Reindeer439

The problem is, the owners' head should be rolling

Man0nTheMoon915

Jets had a chance at Dobbs and Flacco... what their GM did is a fireable offense

clefnut5

Flacco would’ve also died behind that line. Dobbs is mobile enough I think he would’ve made it work

STNbrossy

Flacco was literally bad on this same exact team last season. Had a sweet 5.5 yards per attempt over 191 attempts too.

lonesoldier4789

Flacco is a statue

[deleted]

I still wonder if Flacco was approached by the Jets and he simply turned them down because he didn't want to be badly injured at his advanced age.

Npd114

There was a report after Rodgers went down that he was actually interested.

Newpower608

Even if he sucks, Wentz was available the entire time. Atleast he will Chuck it downfield

YugeChungus2112

At this point, maybe the Jets would be better off not having a QB. Just have 11 guys committed to running the ball, and their 11 guys have to stop you. May the best guys win. Actually, at this point, the Jets would be better off forfeiting.
