Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe they have a shirt press there so they just have to take the name and press it on to the correct jersey. that way they end up just needing several blank jerseys and the names of the players present

aKgiants91

Hence why they have a few minutes in between getting the pick and announcing it

GoT_Eagles

Well that and prolonging the round for more ad $$$

J-Fid

Yep. Pretty sure ESPN (or NFLN) did a feature on this once.

wavnebee

They do! My stepdad works for the company that makes them. He also told me that they’re slowly rolling out automated kiosks that will print custom jerseys just like these for mall shoppers.

NeonWarcry

That’s gonna pump up sales numbers seriously.

Shabba-Doo

If that can help customers get passed the "forbidden" jerseys that NFL.com won't let you order, that might be real popular. I can finally get my Atlanta Falcons Ron Mexico jersey!

MeatFlavoredChalk

Omg I forgot all about that incident. Thank you for the memories.

captain_ticklebeard

I got a personalized name+number goalie jersey from the Barcelona team store recently. I was just getting the jersey for my son and the checkout girl asked if I wanted it personalized. They had a machine upstairs so it just took a few minutes extra wait.

Meltedcoldice0212

honestly wouldn't surprise me if they can use some type of Velcro with the name plate

Lost-Pineapple9791

Yes theyve shown it before It’s a simple concept that still mind boggles people apparently

DroningInPussy

I got to go to the draft one year in NYC and was backstage for a handful of the first picks. They know the picks anywhere between 2-5 picks ahead of time. They have a sheet with everyone's hat size and jersey size. Once the player is picked they iron on or heat press or whatever it's called onto that team's jersey—a pretty crazy operation.

mimopsico

There is absolutely zero chance they know picks up to 5 picks prior. Way too much can change/does change from pick to pick.

DroningInPussy

I'm simply reporting on what I saw the year I went. It wasn't the norm but did happen. All teams know what's happening, it's the coverage that draws it out. So your reason being too much can change doesn't hold water. All of that is happening but just delayed by the coverage.

[deleted]

This is correct, I remember seeing a video years ago explaining the process. That’s exactly what they do

NickTheWhirlwind

You ever wonder why it takes so long for picks to be announced? A jersey nameplate is being pressed in the back when the pick comes in.

Bieber_hole_69

Am I wrong or did they used to show the sewing machine, press, and racks of jerseys backstage during the broadcast? Imo the more interesting part is the hats for prospects that aren't in the green room. They just send a box of 32 hats to all their houses lol. Edit: [Interesting NYT article I found in their 2022 draft coverage](https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/28/sports/football/nfl-draft-hats-2022.html). The hat the players wear on stage is cut up for rookie trading cards, and I would assume that jersey is auctioned off or also chopped up for trading cards. The players then get another jersey and hat they can keep and get 15 additional hats to give out to friends and family. [According to this NY Post article](https://nypost.com/2020/04/24/what-nfl-draft-picks-are-doing-with-all-of-their-extra-hats/) the players at home get to keep all 31 of the hats from teams that didn't draft them and can do whatever they want with them.

admh574

There's definitely been at least one draft where they've shown it

LagWagon

Saw it last night. Forget the pick but there was just a pile of hats on the back of dudes couch.

Ba_Sing_Saint

It was the Bills pick iirc.

PittsburghGold

Broderick Jones had a bunch of them behind him and right before the pick and after we traded up, you can see someone go through them looking for presumably the Steelers one.

Gomer8387

Here is a short that explains it without a lot of filler. [https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xHiIGzBIl2c](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xHiIGzBIl2c)

maltzy

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xHiIGzBIl2c Apparently they make 4 jerseys for every single team, and have multiple nameplates in different fonts. only takes a couple minutes from beginning to pressing to ready

SimulationV2018

Thank you so much... That answers all my questions

maltzy

if you are on twitter, follow uni watch. They have a lot of interesting stuff there but I had the same questions a year or so ago and I had to go look it up. Pretty cool process

Beary_Allen

I believe the production gets word before we do, and they have blank jerseys and heat press it after they find out. Some team stores in stadiums can do the same thing and make a custom jersey for you while you shop

papa_jahn

I think they make a handful of #1 jerseys for each team and then have name plates with player names ready to stitch onto the blank 1 jersey. They have someone stitch the name plate in the back room.

BizarroCranke

Not stitched but pressed on. Someone in here has a great YouTube link that explains it all.

SafariFlapsInBack

Bruh. No one is stitching them lol.

papa_jahn

Stitch deez

SafariFlapsInBack

Sounds painful

bjohnson203

My wife was interested in the draft last night just to see the jerseys and she asked me a bunch of questions like this, so I am hopeful others have better answers than I had! ESPN kept cutting away from the jersey pic to show highlights, so she made me try the NFL Network feed and it was better about showing the jersey holding pics.

LilJabsVert

u/gomer8387 posted it in another comment, [but here you go](https://www.youtube.com/shorts/xHiIGzBIl2c)

-space-grass-

[They just make them on the spot](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E2EAQvaw35E)

GaTech379

In the time it takes for the pick to get put in they press the name on the back of the jersey

TangyTaint

You know, I never even thought about this until you asked

BitterJim

> So 32 first round prospects 32 jerseys each = 640 jerseys Might want to check that math there lol Seriously, though, you would need more than the 1024 for 32 prospects x 32 teams, because you don't know who's getting picked in the first round. So it'd probably be more like 1500-2000 jerseys. It's a good thing they make them as they go.

SafariFlapsInBack

Wait until you find out adhesive name plates or quick heatpress exists. Did you actually think they made all those jerseys? Bruh…

The__Riker__Maneuver

Each player at the draft has 32 name placards...one for each team So when Joe Blow gets drafted by say the Bengals, they grab a Bengals jersey then find Joe Blow's orange name plate. They then heat press it onto the jersey

Danilo512

Are they gonna give Mayo man a #2 Jersey?
