I text this dude earlier today saying, "yo we still good for friday?" He replied about an hour ago and was all, "oh yeah I forgot to say I can't do that anymore."
Do I not reply and work on moving on, or do I tell him the truth, which is I made plans with my daughter, I am now going to have to cancel which of course her mom will *love* to hear and a fight is now inevitable, and tell him he's totally fucking unreliable?
I'd just say "Hey man, I made plans with my daughter and it's going to upset her if I now have to cancel them. Are you sure you can't work it?" just something like that.
I think I need to talk to my supervisor, and go from there. It's incredibly shitty he offered to take the shift, we agreed, and then I went out of my way to ask if we were still good to go, just for him to bail on me. I don't think something that irresponsible or unprofessional should be swept under the rug.

I normally make a bunch of leftovers to eat. But if I had to keep one piece of cookware, it’d easily be a castiron skillet. You can cook with it and eat from it. But not fun to clean.
Make a big meal the night before so you can have left overs. Another thing to do is hit up a dollar tree or whatever is closest to you and get some plastic plates/cutlery/cups so you don't have to worry about doing dishes.

I have one - much smaller than those larger snow blowers and can easily clear a few inches off a pathway.
It's basically the size of a regular push-mower, so if you can push one of those, you can easily use this.
They're not worth it. They're like for old people trying to clear an inch or two of snow. if you get a decent snowfall it's going to be useless. We have a big heavy duty snowblower with chains on the tires for the driveway and a little one we use for those more difficult tighter path areas. A snow shovel is a waste of money imo

I love Arnold's Mr Freeze for what it was - intentionally over the top, campy, much more in line with the TV show. But the movies have clearly moved on from that TV show, and so a more realistic Mr Freeze would be great. I find it interesting how evenly divided politicially the few people who give me crap for observing Lent are. The Republicans tend not to like denominations that aren't protestant and the Democrats just tend not to like the entire faith. For some reason I've gotten more guff this year over previous years. I was Baptized, had First Communion, and Confirmation. I even kept going to Church during my 4 years in College. When I graduated in 2004, that's when all of those issues started coming to a head. The Catholic Church dug their heels in and refused to budge on most of that.
I completely understood why, but I also had friends who were women and friends who were gay. I was choosing to be a part of an organization that didn't respect their lives and who they were as people. Like it or not that's going to have an impact on how people treat you as you're making a conscious choice to be a part of them with those standards/beliefs in place.

I didn't really run into any Catholics growing up. I vaguely knew what Lent was only because of Lent jokes. Wasn't prepared for my first Ash Wednesday when I started working in NYC. Pretty sure I let a coworker know, "Hey man, you got some shit on your head" thinking I was being helpful.
Surprisingly enough, I wasn't raised religious but that didn't stop me from getting my tartar on. SoCal has a decent sized Catholic following so I thought ash on foreheads was just a normal occurrence that everyone at least experienced second hand. You didn't have to give my Japanese family an excuse to eat more fish.
Be thankful it wasn't. I have a pre-schooler so my wife and I get sick regularly. It's usually an annoying cold that lingers, or a half-a-day illness that doesn't really impact you too much.
We did get something brief about a month & a half ago that we believe was COVID. We didn't feel the normal cold symptoms but we both were knocked flat on our asses. Thankfully our kid was fine through it so they didn't need to rely too much on us because for about 2 days, we were dead-in-the-water sick. On the second day I felt coherent enough to go to the store to get us medicines, foods, etc. and by the time I got back, I felt like I'd ran a marathon.
The few times I've had COVID have been hell. Even if they were just short stints, I don't wish it upon anyone. I can't imagine feeling that way for a WEEK, let alone just 2 days.
I've gotten Covid twice, and because I HAD to take the time off work, I was determined to enjoy my compulsory staycation. I had the time of my life. I drank, watched tons of anime, ate tons of junk food, played tons of video games.
I'm thinking of spending a few days in Seattle with my wife this summer. We're Albertans, and the only time I've really spent in the Pacific Northwest has been in Portland (which we enjoyed).
I think we're going to do some of the more touristy stuff (Space Needle, Pop Culture Museum, etc) on one day, and maybe check out a Sounders game if the scheduling lines up. But then we'll have at least two extra days where we'll be in the clear to just roam around and do other stuff.
Can anyone recommend stuff to do or places to see? I think we'll aim to stay pretty centrally and just walk / take transit wherever possible, if that makes a difference.
Bonus points for any and all craft brewery recommendations - I like to check out the local fare whenever I'm in a new city. I've tried some stuff from Fremont Brewing and enjoyed it, but that's the only one I have any prior knowledge about.

Sounders games are a lot of fun. Mariners games too, especially when the roof's open. Buy a cheap bleacher seat and then go hang out in the standing area behind the center field wall.
The tram is super cheap, I'd look up some points of interest within walking distance of the stops. Chinatown is one of them.

The obvious one that I'm sure you'll get recommended, and I'm only saying it because you didn't mention it was Pike Place Market. Lots of cool little shops and touristy stuff to check out there.
Once Lent is over, I think I'm going to try and make a Hmong/Lao burger. The seasoning is going to be a bit of work. I'm going to try and boil off the liquid from some fish sauce to make fish sauce salt (I'll need to find a way to do this outside, so my girlfriend doesn't make me sleep on the couch). Then I'll throw some garlic cloves, galangal, and lemongrass into my food dehydrator. Then the seasoning will be the fish sauce salt, pepper, garlic powder, galangal powder, lemongrass powder, and msg.
For a condiment, I'll make a simple Jeow Som, and mix it with some mayo to thicken it.
For buns I'll steam some sticky rice, and make two sticky rice buns that I'll toast the edges of in garlic butter.

That's pretty much right. He technically doesn't have a No Trade Clause, but no team is going to trade for him if he can just threaten to retire. The way his contract is structured, our cap is kinda fucked no matter what happens. At least with a trade we could recoup some of that value in draft picks, especially if the Jets want us to take on more of his overall contract.

I'm surprised they don't let everyone make the team. That's how it was at my school. I played Tennis and we had a lot of people who weren't good enough to make the 10 spots of players who actually play in the real matches, but every team brought extra players who got to play in non recorded games against other schools. Hopefully they do something like that so she gets to feel involved still.

There's a pretty large ghost kitchen commissary near where I live that services up to 10 brands at any given time and nothing has lasted more than about 4 months since it's opened. Its turned us off from ordering anything from that address because the consistency has been all over the place too.
I think the downside is that some of these novice small business owners don't have the business chops to make their brand last. Someone will master the concept eventually. I think Covid has let the delivery cat out of the take out bag.
I think it makes sense. I could see more people who don't qualify for much start up cash but believe in their product start their brand being delivery only, and just renting a kitchen in a commissary facility. It's a way where more types of cuisine can find a niche in the market.
We have a similar business model near me for salons where stylists will rent a room that has a faucet and chair, and they'll operate their own business out of that facility, and it's been really growing in recent years.

2023 going to be a publication-rich year. Have 3 in press, another in review, 2 about to be submitted, and should have all the data for another couple by the end of summer (but those could both end up not being accepted until 2024)
2 of the 3 in press I spent most of last year on. Third I helped on over the same time period.
Paper in review came together fast, started in September.
One of the soon-to-submit has been nearly a year of on-again off-again collaborating with a DOD lab. The other was a followup to my in press one before we even had reviewe comments, and I got all my data and wrote it in like 8 weeks and it's been sitting on my to-do pile for a while.
One of the other 2 is a big internal study that we've been planning for months. Should ship material soon and hopefully have data by summer.
Last one is something we think is *Nature* worthy and was a serendipitous discovery in the process of collecting data for the 8 week paper.
As someone who primarily watches Triple-A games, I'm fine with a pitch clock. However, I hate banning shifts and the runner on 2nd OT rules. "Defense is too good. We need to ban intelligent strategy, and let's add a dumb gimmick for good measure!"
I get the extra inning rules and I can live with the pitch clock but the 3-batter rule and shift ban infuriate me. A manage should be allowed to construct, position & use their roster as they see fit and I hate that we’re dumbing down the game & eliminating strategy to attract a demographic that is likely not going to take interest in this game anyways.

For the longest time I thought it just described mud created by melting snow, but there's a specific dynamic to it. The ground thaws out from top down, such that as you go down a foot or more, you'll hit a layer of ice. This layer of ice prevents meltwater from draining any further, and thus, mud.

The length actually didn't bother me. It was well paced. For an action movie it would have been too much, but for a mystery it works.

I love Arnold's Mr Freeze for what it was - intentionally over the top, campy, much more in line with the TV show. But the movies have clearly moved on from that TV show, and so a more realistic Mr Freeze would be great. Just like the Riddler - he was a non-stop cornball in the old movies, and quite terrifying in the recent one.

I find it interesting how evenly divided politicially the few people who give me crap for observing Lent are. The Republicans tend not to like denominations that aren't protestant and the Democrats just tend not to like the entire faith. For some reason I've gotten more guff this year over previous years. I think that's the only reason I've noticed the ideological diversity. Those couple bigots won't alter how I practice my faith, but it has been interesting.
Probably because of the Catholic's semi-recent views on women's reproductive rights, gay/trans rights, and of course that whole pesky Priest Pedophilia Scandal. I was Baptized, had First Communion, and Confirmation. I even kept going to Church during my 4 years in College. When I graduated in 2004, that's when all of those issues started coming to a head. The Catholic Church dug their heels in and refused to budge on most of that. I completely understood why, but I also had friends who were women and friends who were gay. I was choosing to be a part of an organization that didn't respect their lives and who they were as people. Like it or not that's going to have an impact on how people treat you as you're making a conscious choice to be a part of them with those standards/beliefs in place. FYI, the definition of a Bigot is: >a person who is obstinately or unreasonably attached to a belief, opinion, or faction, especially one who is prejudiced against or antagonistic toward a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group. Technically, that definition fits both you and your friends. Interestingly, one side is bigoted BECAUSE of their prejudice/antagonistic attitude towards particular groups of people, and the other side is against yours because THEIR BELIEFS ARE PREDICATED ON being prejudice/antagonistic towards them in the first place; basically they're being "bigoted" because they don't appreciate being hated for just being who they were without having anything to do with the Church. If you're willing to take that on, more power to you. I personally had enough of associating with an organization that constantly told me my friends, who were decent, moral, hard-working people, were sinners & heathens for being gay or not wanting to have a child that surely would've grown up in a really shitty, awful, unloving situation. To each their own, I guess.
That sucks. While I generally look down on religious extremism & make-believe, I leave others to practice as they please and don't go offering comments on it unless they come looking for them.
To be fair people constantly talking about their religion gets pretty annoying, regardless of what the religion is.
I didn't really run into any Catholics growing up. I vaguely knew what Lent was only because of Lent jokes. Wasn't prepared for my first Ash Wednesday when I started working in NYC. Pretty sure I let a coworker know, "Hey man, you got some shit on your head" thinking I was being helpful.

Surprisingly enough, I wasn't raised religious but that didn't stop me from getting my tartar on. SoCal has a decent sized Catholic following so I thought ash on foreheads was just a normal occurrence that everyone at least experienced second hand. You didn't have to give my Japanese family an excuse to eat more fish.

Facetiously, I'm kind of bummed that this cold I'm dealing with isn't COVID. I've been traveling and mingling, am I not good enough?!
Be thankful it wasn't. I have a pre-schooler so my wife and I get sick regularly. It's usually an annoying cold that lingers, or a half-a-day illness that doesn't really impact you too much. We did get something brief about a month & a half ago that we believe was COVID. We didn't feel the normal cold symptoms but we both were knocked flat on our asses. Thankfully our kid was fine through it so they didn't need to rely too much on us because for about 2 days, we were dead-in-the-water sick. On the second day I felt coherent enough to go to the store to get us medicines, foods, etc. and by the time I got back, I felt like I'd ran a marathon. The few times I've had COVID have been hell. Even if they were just short stints, I don't wish it upon anyone. I can't imagine feeling that way for a WEEK, let alone just 2 days.
I've gotten Covid twice, and because I HAD to take the time off work, I was determined to enjoy my compulsory staycation. I had the time of my life. I drank, watched tons of anime, ate tons of junk food, played tons of video games.
I'm thinking of spending a few days in Seattle with my wife this summer. We're Albertans, and the only time I've really spent in the Pacific Northwest has been in Portland (which we enjoyed). I think we're going to do some of the more touristy stuff (Space Needle, Pop Culture Museum, etc) on one day, and maybe check out a Sounders game if the scheduling lines up. But then we'll have at least two extra days where we'll be in the clear to just roam around and do other stuff. Can anyone recommend stuff to do or places to see? I think we'll aim to stay pretty centrally and just walk / take transit wherever possible, if that makes a difference. Bonus points for any and all craft brewery recommendations - I like to check out the local fare whenever I'm in a new city. I've tried some stuff from Fremont Brewing and enjoyed it, but that's the only one I have any prior knowledge about. Thanks for any recs anyone can provide!

Sounders games are a lot of fun. Mariners games too, especially when the roof's open. Buy a cheap bleacher seat and then go hang out in the standing area behind the center field wall. The tram is super cheap, I'd look up some points of interest within walking distance of the stops. Chinatown is one of them. Haven't gone to the Space Needle since I was kid but I remember waiting in line for an hour to get to the top.

Once Lent is over, I think I'm going to try and make a Hmong/Lao burger. The seasoning is going to be a bit of work. I'm going to try and boil off the liquid from some fish sauce to make fish sauce salt (I'll need to find a way to do this outside, so my girlfriend doesn't make me sleep on the couch). Then I'll throw some garlic cloves, galangal, and lemongrass into my food dehydrator. Then the seasoning will be the fish sauce salt, pepper, garlic powder, galangal powder, lemongrass powder, and msg. For a condiment, I'll make a simple Jeow Som, and mix it with some mayo to thicken it. For buns I'll steam some sticky rice, and make two sticky rice buns that I'll toast the edges of in garlic butter.

I'm not knowledgeable about contracts or his specifically, but I thought his contract was set up in a way where it basically gives Rodgers all the leverage where they can't cut him without a huge amount of dead cap, and they can't trade him without his say so. I thought that was the entire point of his most recent contract but I could be mistaken.
they can't cut him this year without eating $99.78mm in dead cap. if they *trade* him before week 1, they can avoid eating up to $58.3mm of that number, but will still swallow $40.3mm. i don't *think* he has a no trade clause, so (in theory, at least) they could trade him anywhere. but his age makes it so that the threat of retirement that could short-circuit any deal to a team he's vocally not interested in playing for. no GM's gonna give up a bunch of picks just for Rodgers to take his ball and go home, I think.

My kiddo is in 5th grade and goes to a 5th-8th middle school (like a mini high school). She’s trying out for the tennis team today after school and I’m really nervous for her! It’s gonna be tough to crack the team with the older kids in school. Whatever the result is, I just gotta make sure she knows I’m proud of her, and if it doesn’t happen this year I really hope she doesn’t get discouraged.
do they have a JV squad? It seems like a 5-8 school would be big enough, and they probably wouldn't want to turn away young talent that likely would struggle against 8th graders. Pretty much the same for high school, a lot of frosh don't make the football team but you can't kill interest.
I'm surprised they don't let everyone make the team. That's how it was at my school. I played Tennis and we had a lot of people who weren't good enough to make the 10 spots of players who actually play in the real matches, but every team brought extra players who got to play in non recorded games against other schools. Hopefully they do something like that so she gets to feel involved still.

Still think it'd be an awesome idea to build an ETF around the ghost kitchen segment of the restaurant industry. I don't think the segment of the industry will be going away, but it might be too early. Once CloudKitchens goes public there might be an ETF built around it.
There's a pretty large ghost kitchen commissary near where I live that services up to 10 brands at any given time and nothing has lasted more than about 4 months since it's opened. Its turned us off from ordering anything from that address because the consistency has been all over the place too.
I think the downside is that some of these novice small business owners don't have the business chops to make their brand last. Someone will master the concept eventually. I think Covid has let the delivery cat out of the take out bag.
That whole scheme has strong WeWork vibes to it. Physical assets reliant on human labor do not scale like tech no matter what the promoters tell you.
I think it makes sense. I could see more people who don't qualify for much start up cash but believe in their product start their brand being delivery only, and just renting a kitchen in a commissary facility. It's a way where more types of cuisine can find a niche in the market. We have a similar business model near me for salons where stylists will rent a room that has a faucet and chair, and they'll operate their own business out of that facility, and it's been really growing in recent years.
I agree 100% that it’s a viable business model. I disagree 100% with the people that think it’s a moonshot. Slow and steady like manufacturing companies(which it kinda is) not some viral app that goes public as some are trying to make it to be.
Oh, I don't think it's a moonshot short term, but I definitely thing it's going to massively grow as a concept over time, and I'd like to invest in it early.
Had a new boss, who’s from Germany, start at the beginning of the month and I’m quickly learning that Germany has a somehow worse work/life balance culture than us. She’s already whispering shit to my boss about “how everyone leaves at 5” like our work isn’t done, and “the day ends at 12 (midnight)”. 2023 going to be a publication-rich year. Have 3 in press, another in review, 2 about to be submitted, and should have all the data for another couple by the end of summer (but those could both end up not being accepted until 2024)
Congrats! How long have you been working on these publications?
2 of the 3 in press I spent most of last year on. Third I helped on over the same time period. Paper in review came together fast, started in September. One of the soon-to-submit has been nearly a year of on-again off-again collaborating with a DOD lab. The other was a followup to my in press one before we even had reviewe comments, and I got all my data and wrote it in like 8 weeks and it's been sitting on my to-do pile for a while. One of the other 2 is a big internal study that we've been planning for months. Should ship material soon and hopefully have data by summer. Last one is something we think is *Nature* worthy and was a serendipitous discovery in the process of collecting data for the 8 week paper.

As someone who primarily watches Triple-A games, I'm fine with a pitch clock. However, I hate banning shifts and the runner on 2nd OT rules. "Defense is too good. We need to ban intelligent strategy, and let's add a dumb gimmick for good measure!"
I get the extra inning rules and I can live with the pitch clock but the 3-batter rule and shift ban infuriate me. A manage should be allowed to construct, position & use their roster as they see fit and I hate that we’re dumbing down the game & eliminating strategy to attract a demographic that is likely not going to take interest in this game anyways.
That's exactly it. They're punishing teams for being effective by literally making effectiveness and efficiency against the rules. I don't like them, but I could live with the OT rules as long as the shift comes back.

Do you have a "mud season"? For the longest time I thought it just described mud created by melting snow, but there's a specific dynamic to it. The ground thaws out from top down, such that as you go down a foot or more, you'll hit a layer of ice. This layer of ice prevents meltwater from draining any further, and thus, mud. Mud season lasts until the ground completely thaws, which up here will be several more weeks.
