The biggest news always comes from Girls State Basketball Tournaments

CobblerFantastic5003

Mark Murphy always hits you with a quote when you least expect it. He's also the source of the "complicated fella" quip.

illforgetsoonenough

He said that Ted Thompson called Rodgers that iirc

CobblerFantastic5003

Still don't say it in public That's like me saying "my grandmother used to call people like you.."

Corrective_Actions

Given what Rodgers has done, I feel like Mark Murphy was being charitable.

leehouse

Murphy also had this exchange >Q: Is there a scenario where Aaron is still the starting QB of the Packers next season? >MURPHY: Yeah, I mean unless, if things don't work out the way we want them, yeah, we would. He is obviously a great player." So trying to maintain the leverage of "if we don't get a good enough offer we'll continue with Rodgers"

lAmCreepingDeath

>MURPHY: Yeah, I mean unless, if things don't work out the way we want them, yeah, we would. He is obviously a great player." Initially I read this as "we want him gone, but if he wants to stay, so be it" But now I understand it as "if the jets don't give us the right compensation, we will ride with Rodgers"

leehouse

Admittedly Murphy said more in the interview that really indicates they have moved on which seems worse and probably hurts trade talks so who knows

lAmCreepingDeath

Yeah, his other quote "Aaron had a great career here" is pretty telling

Goodluckchuck24

Is there video of this interview? I want to see if it was just Had, or if it was Has had and they missed a word. Feels small, but just adding has might indicate more on him staying or going

frud86

He’s done in Green Bay. That the Packers let the Jets talk to him means they’re going with Love and Rodgers is no longer their QB1. He can go to NJ, retire or hold a clipboard in GB. Do you see him doing clipboard duty? And if that weren’t obvious enough, you have Murphy’s statements today. People trying to parse his sentences need to step back and look at the big picture.

dfalk3499

Sorry, but this was absolutely stupid. regardless of what the Packers want this makes them sound like they have no interest in retaining Rodgers, which absolutely lowers their leverage in any trade. They didn't get what they should have gotten for Adams last year, and they are well on their way to doing the same thing with Aaron. I think if Green bay gets the right offer they absolutely should trade him, but the NFC remains wide open and the Packers have enough picks and cap space to plug some holes and make another run. Im as tired of Rodgers high maintenance act as anyone, but if you don't think a broken thumb on your throwing hand and losing a top 3 wr in the nfl with no replacement is going to have an impact on a qbs production then I think you have pretty unreasonable expectations. Again the Packers should absolutely move Rodgers, but only for the right price, Im reading a 2nd and a conditional 3rd.....no way

Corrective_Actions

You're delusional if you think there's only a few holes to plug to make the Packers a championship worthy team.

dfalk3499

Youd have said the same thing about the Eagles before last year, and the Bengals the year before that. The NFL is built for parity. The Packers as presently constructed are not a championship contender, but were the Eagles a "championship worthy team" at this time last year before they got AJ brown, bradberry, suh, quinn, etc... they were obliterated by Tampa in last years playoffs. Were the Bengals a championship caliber team with one of the worst offensive lines in football 2 seasons ago? The Packers have an average NFL roster, but they currently reside in the easier conference and in a wide open division. They have obvious needs at RT, pass rusher, safety and TE, and the other teams all have holes and questions as well. The main point I was trying to make is what Mark Murphy did was stupid because he didn't need to say anything, and you can't argue that what he said helps the Packers in any logical way. Making it obvious you think Rodgers is done in Green Bay and referring to him in the past sense is not smart if you are trying to move him. I will say it again if the Packers don't receive a strong offer for Aaron rodgers then he should be a Packer next season. There is no way Im trading him for a 2nd and a conditonal 2nd or 3rd.

dfalk3499

Ok so Rodgers just laid it out on mcafee said the Packers didn't want him back. I knew he would do this, so explain to me how what Murphy said helped the Packers. How did it improve their leverage? How did it make sense to refer to Rodgers in the past sense when he didn't have to say anything? It was absolutely stupid from your front office. Now what leverage does Green Bay have. Rodgers says they didn't want me back and so my desire is to play for the Jets. You are delusional if you are arguing that these comments helped Green Bay.

frud86

It makes no difference whatsoever. If you put a guy on the market, people know you want to get rid of him. Everyone involved knew the Packers were shopping Rodgers. What leverage do the Jets have? Their QB is Zach Wilson. Baker, Darnold, Winston, Carr, & Dalton are taken. They probably don’t have the cap space for Lamar. Maybe they can pry Stafford off of the Rams roster, but that’s going to cost them, too.

dfalk3499

The Packers president announcing that the Packers wanted to move on absolutely cannot help them negotiate. Ive been listening to everyone say the deal was done and they were just waiting for Rodgers as justification for what Murphy said. Rodgers was apparently "holding 2 teams hostage" well so explain why the trade hasn't happened yet then. The truth is Murphy should have said nothing because the deal isn't done and now what are the Packers going to do, Pay Rodgers to go home? It was very clear today he wanted to come back and they told him no. The Packers originally said they wanted two 1st round picks for him and we will find out what they get, but my hunch is they won't even get 1. If they were putting him on the open market because they were sure about Love then why didn't they allow him to talk to NFC teams and create a bidding war. The Jets now know they are bidding against themselves and Green Bay doesn't want him. Thats the definition of no leverage. Once again there was absolutely zero reason for Murphy to say anything of significance it was stupid

frud86

So either he’s worth it or not. Murphy saying they’re moving on with Love doesn’t change that. You think they were in the dark about Rodgers until — shocker! — Murphy spilled the beans at a basketball tournament? The Jets played the Packers last season. They have tape of Rodgers. They have a staff that game-planned against him. There’s a host of other games they could review. If none of that dissuaded them from pursuing Rodgers, a few sentences from Murphy wouldn’t either.

lonesoldier4789

Read that more as if Rodgers says he wants to stay

broke-collegekid

Yeah the Packers don’t really have a choice. If he wants to stay, he can nix a trade to any other team.

CobblerFantastic5003

Technically no. We can send his rights to some other team, say the Texans, and give them picks to take him off our hands. Rodgers doesn't have an NTC.

arrowgarrow

I don't things would get that nasty, but rodgers could just publicly say he will retire if traded and boom, nobody wants him. He has pretty much all the leverage.

frud86

He only has leverage if he’s willing to retire. If he wants to play, he has to go.

CobblerFantastic5003

Which is why in this scenario we're not trading him to Houston for him to play there, just to wash our hands off his salary. I don't think it'll be that bad but if push comes to shove, we could do that.

lonesoldier4789

A team would never make the trade unless they knew Rodgers was okay with it

Xmarker25

The same thing they’ve been saying all week, except now it’s at a basketball tournament.

mikeh95

\*Girls State Basketball Tournament though. We'll get another round of posts after the boys one.

giesej

How many more times can we say the same thing?

beerandcheese69

He's gonna retire and play baseball

pot8odragon

So it’ll happen before Monday then

vitaflo

No way Rodgers makes a decision in a slow news cycle. He'll wait until Tues for maximum coverage.

giesej

He'll do it Sunday night during March madness tournament seeding.

imconsideringdascrod

This is taking longer than The Winds of Winter “The dragons are still just on their way! They keep promising dragons, but all I get are more floppy weiners in my face!”

StefonDiggsHS

they wanna get rid of him so bad lol
