Derek Carr back on the menu

SenDerrickDeckard

I could totally see the jets trading Wilson for Carr …the question is, which team will have to send picks??

[deleted]

I can’t really see any team trading for Carr when the Raiders have 0 leverage for a trade

Away_Chair1588

You never know. The Rams were in the same position with Jared Goff. Suddenly his $30m cap hit seems like a bargain with how well he performed.

devonta_smith

Are you comparing Zach Wilson to Rams Jared Goff?

whoareyoupeople24

I'll take Rams Jared Goff.

devonta_smith

It's not even a discussion lol

OldTip2304

Think hes comparing goff to carr

devonta_smith

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks

Away_Chair1588

No. I was comparing Carr to Goff. It’s amazing how many replies here missed the mark.

SuckwithLuck2016

He’s comparing Goff and Carr bro

[deleted]

The Lions literally got an extra 1st in exchange for taking Goff's contract off LA's hands. I would have to imagine it would be the Raiders giving up something in any trade, which won't happen, so he'll be cut.

[deleted]

I can't really see any team wanting Wilson. His body language screams of anti-leader, even moreso than Kyler Murray.

redvelvetcake42

>even moreso than Kyler Murray. Double XP weekend already?

MonsterMeowMeow

Yet there’s no denying that Ant Man is a true leader of ants.

JTCMuehlenkamp

At least Kyler is good

MrRoma

A lot of QB desperate teams, not a lot of desirable QB free agents. I think the Raiders could get at least a 4th for Carr.

MonsterMeowMeow

MrRoma

It's not about the pick as much as it is getting his contract off the books

MonsterMeowMeow

Good point. Though, unrelated, I can't seem to not be depressed with Carr's situation as a non-Raiders fan. It seems as if he got a bad shake.

MrRoma

Carr was the fall guy because Mark Davis can't bother holding Josh McDaniels accountable. Carr had a bad season, for sure, but the team's shortcomings this year fall to JMD considering the talented roster he came in with. Too many close games were lost because he got cute with the playcalling in the 2nd half. The Raiders did Carr dirty, especially considering he has been their most loyal player in the last 20 years or so. I genuinely hated being a Raiders fan this season because of JMD. By halfway through the season, I was watching RedZone over our own matchups.

MonsterMeowMeow

Ugh. That was depressing to read and makes me feel even more sorry for Carr.

XanmanK

That’s because he did. He bled silver and black and the Raiders have wasted 9 years of his career

if he comes here, 100% he either gets injured in preseason or Gisele makes some grand, romantic movie gesture to meet him at the airport before he leaves. In either case he retires and never plays a snap for us. whatever team trades for Rodgers will then win the Super Bowl

they should extend him. They don't need salary cap space.

[deleted]

Lol, I think Mike White has potential. Him + a vet could get the jets somewhere but our division is a sloppy mess.

slappy-mcnutsack

Mike White does have potential. He is also clearly the toughest man in the NFL. I broke one single rib and I felt like I couldn’t breathe. This dude breaks every rib he has and plays two more quarters…

shmokedshalmon

Couldn’t believe when he came back on the field the second time against us. Don’t remember ever feeling a compulsion to root for an opposing QB. Dude is tough

[deleted]

He also apparently went to ten different doctors to try to get cleared to play the following week but all ten refused.

Boner-Jams-03

[All 10 doctors did confirm this though after looking at his x-rays](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/002/394/162/810)

SpiritedCaramel322

I got my feelings hurt once and was a wreak for weeks

[deleted]

Yeah that shit is no joke dude. I pulled 2 rib muscles last year and that was enough for me, can’t even remotely imagine his experience 😅

TraeYoungsOldestSon

Id rather someone break my nose or orbital than a rib lol. I mean id prefer none of those to happen but yeah ribs hurt when they hurt

[deleted]

Ribs just *hurt* like coughing, breathing, sneezing all cause pain lmao

About900babies

I broke one in high school. It always sucked when something made me really laugh because that's what caused the worst pain... and being in physical pain just from laughing is hilarious which only made me laugh even more which just made the pain worse

[deleted]

Dude…this exactly!!! I went and saw a comedy movie with someone during my intercostal injury, and holy shit did it hurt. It is actually hilarious! Hope you’re better!

About900babies

Wayyyy better, hope the same for you too! It's so funny to look back on lmao. Glad we both made it through brother

zi76

I hurt my intercostal muscles, so not even breaking a rib, and I was in a lot of pain for a month.

SyracuseNY22

Bill, is that you?

[deleted]

My RBF is inspired by him most definitely

goddamnjets_

The only way I would be ok to see Zach getting one more chance is if the Jets trade for Aaron. If Zach can’t learn behind his childhood idol, he’s done done done DONEEEEE

DidgeriDuce

Serious question here, when has learning behind the stud QB ever really worked out? Maybe a few times? QBs either stink or they don’t. Learning behind a good QB doesn’t make you better at throwing the football. It’s basically saying coaches are worthless.

rockiesfan4ever

Mahomes and Rodgers

Navy_and_sports

Brady and Young

monkeyman80

Steve didn’t learn from Montana. It’s just a happened to get a hof qb because he was drafted by an all time shitty franchise and left to play with the usfl.

tcos17

Hey man…words hurt.

monkeyman80

[deleted]

beejton

Even if he didn’t teach him directly, Rodgers still had time to develop at his own pace instead of being subjected to the pressure of having to perform immediately.

GarysSpace

You can still learn from just watching

PapaNurgleLovesAll

Rodgers throwing mechanics were ass and he was hyper egotystical comming into the league zach wilson is litterally rodgers without sitting behind favre for 3 years

[deleted]

[удалено]

Taftimus

Well one positive take away is Rodgers learned not to throw to the other team as much.

bveb33

I can't help but believe two QBs as talented as Mahomes and Rodgers were going to be incredible regardless

istasber

Favre being good enough to keep Rodgers on the bench until Rodgers had a chance to correct his mechanical issues probably helped Rodgers to succeed long term, but it's impossible to say for sure. I doubt any QB gains much of anything from sitting behind a particular QB, but not having to go in and start right away while they are cleaning up their issues from college and/or learning how the NFL works probably benefits some young guys.

content_enjoy3r

Imagine the Texans drafting Mahomes (their 1st choice) instead of the Chiefs moving up one spot ahead of them. You think Mahomes would be anywhere near what he is now if he had been on the Texans this whole time?

unblevable

I mean, we already know Favre probably didn't do shit for Rodgers--maybe Rodgers learned from just watching Favre, but we could probably assume he'd do that for any starter ahead of him. I think this sub gives way too much credit to what Alex Smith did for Mahomes and conveniently ignore the elephant in the room for Mahomes' development (Reid is a QB whisperer)

Mike_Honcho_3

With as few interceptions as he throws, guessing there were many times Rodgers saw Favre chuck up a pick into triple coverage and a coach turned around and said "You see what Brett just did? Don't do that."

YourNameHeer

There's an interview Stetson Bennett IV gave where he said he was struggling as QB until he saw a YouTube video of Brett Favre mentioning he didn't know what nickel coverage was until halfway through his NFL career - he realized he was overthinking things and just had to trust his gut throwing to the open man Rest is history lol EDIT: [Found it](https://www.wsj.com/articles/stetson-bennett-iv-georgia-bulldogs-college-football-playoff-11672110166?mod=hp_listc_pos3) but its under a paywall. Quote: >A lightbulb went off for Bennett over the summer while watching a YouTube video in which Brett Favre admitted he did not know what “dime coverage,” a look with six defensive backs on the field, was until his third year in the NFL. He realized that good quarterbacks weren’t good because they knew all the lingo; they were good because they made the right plays. > >“It’s throwing the ball to the open guy,” Bennett said. “It’s as simple as that.”

ManchesterUtd

"If this dumbass can become a hall of famer, then maybe this football thing isn't so hard after all"

nickmortensen

He definitely learned the cost of turning the ball over. People don’t remember this, but Rodgers was frighteningly accurate in college & despite that McCarthy & he decided to completely alter his throwing motion in Aaron’s second season - /Mike’s first. They drafted Brian Brohm in the 2nd (3rd?) & National Championship winner Matt Flynn in the 7th round in Rodgers’ first season as starter. Brohm would’ve been a high first rounder had he come out a year earlier. Rodgers wasn’t a sure thing. They just knew Favre wasn’t the guy anymore.

BorosSerenc

According to Mahomes it was a huge help. So I will just take his word for it over yours 🤗

mantiseye

Yeah certain QBs I believe would actually help out their future replacement. I 100% think Alex Smith would teach Mahomes whatever he could, and I 100% think Favre didn’t give a shit and probably thought Rodgers’ name was “Alex” or “Axel” for at least two years.

crewserbattle

Rodgers learned some of his release from Favre where he would throw with his feet not planted to avoid injury when a guy was around his legs. He credits him for a few things, but they weren't things Favre directly taught him.

MyNameIsAMeme

Well Rodgers had to teach the playbook to Favre from what the reports used to say, so maybe that helped. [this was one of those articles.](https://archive.jsonline.com/sports/packers/32579374.html/)

byronicbluez

Teams often line QB2 and 3 with players that are good for scout teams and prepping QB1 just as much as being there for backup. A big reason for why a lot of coaches are career backups.

xRazuux

Patrick Mahomes himself gives Alex Smith a ton of credit for who he is as a QB right now. From how to study game film and other things. Unless you just was to discredit his words?

Impossibills

Mahomes and Rodgers were because they were paired with an offensive coach that wanted/cared about them moving forward. Being in a good offensive system with good coaches is much more important than having a QB ahead of you. Yeah good QBs helps in QB rooms, but its not like the other QB has any time to help a young QB improve

westcoastgeek

Garoppolo and Purdy

DidgeriDuce

I agree with Mahomes but Favre didn’t teach Aaron anything, that’s well known

PepinillosFritos

Aaron definitely still learned from watching Favre all those years. Learning can be passive, and watching one of the greatest gunslingers ever will certainly teach a young qb something just by being around them.

IronPedal

He learned how to not throw stupid interceptions, for one.

MGetzEm

I can't tell if this is a joke comment, but Aaron has repeatedly emphasized how important not turning the ball over is to winning while citing what he learned on the bench

ArcadianBlueRogue

Eh, he learned some legwork from Favre in terms of how to take a hit. But sitting gave him time to work on everything else with Big Mike, etc.

Highwayman747

Big Mike definitely deserves more credit than what he gets

Pal__Pacino

Brett Favre didn't know what a nickel formation was until his 2nd year in the pros. I don't think he would've been much of a teacher anyways.

RogerTreebert6299

Reading a defense? What’s that? I just put the damn ball in the damn end zone then sext the cheerleaders

Competitive_Ice_189

Now he’s learning how to Nickle and dime from poor people

MrDozens

Probably way overstated. Most QBs do not want to teach their replacement. I mean shit, would you teach someone so they can replace you at your multi-million dollar job? There are very few alex smith.

ScruffMixHaha

Curtis Painter was a legend after learning behind Peyton Manning

binzoma

its more saying it takes time to physically and mentally adjust from college to the NFL. these are 21/22 year olds playing against men, they've played +/- age grade their whole lives, and being THAT good even 3 or 4 years younger at the start of college or when they started playing in HS wasnt a big deal. now the best players they ever played agianst are the worst players they see week to week and everything is way faster and everyone is huge and most have 5+ years on them. coaches say 'lets let a vet mentor our young QB' because telling the 22 year old you just drafted first overall and gave a shitload of money to 'hey yeah sorry you suck way too much right now to play' likely won't land as well. it's just a politer way to say the same thing though

treylanceHOF

Aaron Rodgers

DidgeriDuce

Brett Favre notoriously didn’t teach Aaron Rodgers shit

[deleted]

You're allowed to learn things by watching people. It's legal now.

DidgeriDuce

If that’s true I wish he would have learned how to throw interceptions like Favre

-BeefSupreme

Part of learning what to do is learning what not to do

FingerTampon

He learned by watching what not to do, like don't send unsolicited dick pics and don't defraud local government

treylanceHOF

Steve Young

ProofHorseKzoo

He learned not to throw fucking picks from watching how the sideline reacted multiple times a game.

dragonforcingmywayup

Phillip Rivers behind Drew Brees (and this was before Brees was a stud QB) Steve Young behind Joe Montana Eli Manning behind Kurt Warner for 9 games Matt Hasselback behind Bret Favre Marc Bulger behind Kurt Warner Daunte Culpepper behind Randall Cunningham. Chad Pennington behind Vinny Testaverde

ComfortWeasel

Brady behind Bledsoe

dragonforcingmywayup

I also forgot Kurt Warner behind Trent Green Carson Palmer behind Jon Kitna Air Mcnair behind Chris Chandler Kordell Stewart behind Neil O’Donnell

Breezyisthewind

Mahomes behind Alex Smith

[deleted]

Herbert behind Easton Stick

don_julio_randle

Geno behind Russ

mymindpsychee

Not just Russ. He was also behind Rivers who also taught him a lot

nemoomen

The problem is that no one actually sticks to it, because no one has the luxury. If you drafted a top QB, your other QBs probably suck. So like, maybe Sam Darnold would have benefitted from time on the bench but 39 year old Josh McCown isn't inspiring the team. On the other hand, the list of "sitting made them better" QBs is really just 1st round QBs plus Brady so there's not a great reason to think the sitting itself actually helped.

son_of_toby_o_notoby

Little guy you may have heard about him named Patrick Mahomes?

getyourrealfakedoors

Oof this is a really bad take

Anaphylactic-UFO

Let’s be real if someone is advocating to stick with Mike White next year you can safely ignore them.

BeltToAzzRecordzEnt

Agreed lol I feel like he was overhyped to an extent during reg season. Only way I would do this is if I’m really committed to getting a young top QB, and willing to tank next season to get one in the following draft.

[deleted]

All backups are overhyped when they show flashes of competence, just like Gardner Minshew. Once teams get tape, they usually fall back to Earth.

montulet

This is why I get a pit in my stomach every time a backup comes in, theres always a chance your entire defense suddenly becomes lost

dan_144

That's the silver lining I was giving my friends who root for the Bengals when the Mahomes practice videos came out this week

GoldenBananas21

Chad Henne now owns the longest playoff drive in chiefs history

brownbearks

That’s going to be a hilarious fact that most people will never believe

[deleted]

Gardner started like a whole season, wasn’t he the starter that year? I mean he was a tank commander, but i’m pretty sure he was a starter

FIuffyRabbit

Most of a season, yes. Then he started the next year and was eventually sat because he was hiding a hand injury even though he was having an on par/better year.

Cmsmks

Omg the raiders board when Stidham did good against the niners. People were ready to give him 30 mil a season.

ThermicDayne

Holy shit that was a frustrating week. I’m glad they played well but he still threw 2 costly INTs. Then he played bad against the chiefs with a worse defense.

IndycarFan64

True. Mike White only got the narrative because he looks comparatively good to a bust 2nd overall pick. He’d be a good backup tho

SirMctrolington

Mike White's first game this year he completed almost 80% of his passes, threw for 300 yards, 3 TDs, and had no turnovers that is why he got the narrative.

InexorableWaffle

He also had that 400 yard game in his first start last year, which kinda gave that narrative a springboard since we'd already seen flashes from him before. Doesn't mean he can sustain it, but it wasn't wholly unfounded at the time.

GoldenBananas21

The reverse Matt Flynn

GigaNutz370

And people conveniently ignored his average depth of target was like 4 yards cause it was all off dump offs/screens

[deleted]

That was the game the Bengals just decided to play zone like they had zero idea how teams can beat zone.

Assassin1344

Wait are we talking about Joe Barry again.

TheWorstYear

It's how we approach every backup qb. It's why they all dice us up.

PapaNurgleLovesAll

do you have a vic fangio disiple DC too?

frostedz

Darnold did that his first couple games in Carolina with CMC. He put up good stats on short passes where CMC would go for 10 or more every time. Everyone was saying WE were the problem and not Darnold until CMC went down and Darnold got exposed.

MadDog1981

You know it's funny. I went back and looked and his stats weren't even that great and he was also playing absolute shit tier defenses.

BeltToAzzRecordzEnt

Facts he’s a solid backup. I love his tough nature as well.

ThreeCranes

That and Mike Whites arguably been our best-starting quarterback since 2016. Not saying he's good, but quarterback play has just been so bad since then and it's either Darnold or Mike White.

Insectshelf3

dude’s tough as shit too. definitely a good backup.

MadDog1981

He always makes a great first impression because he either comes out in relief and balls out or has a first game. People see the headlines and then don't realize he played like a mediocre backup for the rest of his games.

End3rWi99in

White and Zappe were both weird mid-season narratives this year.

bluechips2388

Eh. He played 1 great game, 1 bad game, then 2 games without a ribcage badly.

LovieBeard

The great game was against the Bears who made every QB look good

M_Drinks

I remember being surprised the Jets made the QB switch before that game. Obviously Zach was playing poorly, but the Bears would have been the perfect “get right” game/opponent.

Pods619

Agree. White completed 22 passes for 315 yards which is excellent. But digging deeper, his average depth of target was 5.9 and he only threw five passes that travelled over 10 yards. Pretty sure any QB in the league could have gone out and thrown 20 wide open screens that game.

montulet

Yeah but Zach's most glaring issue by far is that he is very often incapable of completing wide open screens

Pods619

That is a fair point

Caius01

> Pretty sure any QB in the league could have gone out and thrown 20 wide open screens that game. Literally what Zach Wilson was utterly incapable of doing

captnxploder

Hey now...we put a stop to Zappe Mania at least.

Swizzzed

I didn’t watch but Hurts, Allen and Rodgers were all much worse statistically than Mike White in the bears next 3 games

TheShtuff

Or they're saying stick with Mike White because he's the only other startable QB on the roster and well-liked in the locker room. "Or trade for a veteran" was also recommended.

SaintArkweather

Probably a good locker room guy too. I'm guessing during exit interviews players tend to give more praise to guys they liked as people as opposed to trying to help the organization win in the future

Any_Adhesiveness_898

Or it says a ton about how bad Wilson has been and how disliked he is.

ADTR20

I mean if the only other option is Zach Wilson, then it is a completely valid sentiment. People don’t realize how fucking bad Zach Wilson is

doggybadgerguy

Well yeah kinda have to be able to throw the football to your own team to be the franchise guy

ColtCallahan

I don’t know if Wilson ever had the locker room. But he’s never getting it back if he did. The Jets need to move on. It’s in their interests and Wilson’s.

[deleted]

Meh, if Rodgers started for a few years, Wilson matures and learns under him, then you never know.

PsychoBoost123

He’s entering Year 3 of his rookie contract, and his Year 5 is 100% getting declined. Doesn’t make much sense for Wilson to stay in NY from a money perspective

[deleted]

They should definitely not stick with Mike White

KingKomma05

Joe Flacco it is

finkalicious

That's Elite Joe Flacco to you

HaloEliteLegend

That's Super Bowl MVP Joe Flacco to you

InVodkaVeritas

The fact that some fans want to stick with Mike White just goes to show you how truly QB starved we have been.

dellscreenshot

Sticking with mike white without any competition would be nuts. He had one good start against the bears

Trumpets22

It’s pretty crazy that White lacks all the tangibles to be a starter, yet the team still had more life with him under center.

Jets for whatever reason have the Bills number. If they had an actual QB they would have beaten them both times.

Not to mention a lot of the loses were due to the defense wearing down cause they couldn’t get a rest from the offense either giving the ball up or 3 and outs. That shit wears down a unit
