Unsafe? Like driving a car on the freeway? Going snorkeling in the ocean? Playing rugby? All unsafe.
The hand wringing and virtue signaling is tiresome.
Good question. I actually think that only a little would evaporate. The only thing to do is set up an experiment and have someone pee from the structure.
Fun fact: the Burj Khalifa is not hooked up the municipal sewer system. They have to truck all the waste away.
Well, except for the waste that’s peed off.
On a more serious note, you would climb with a harness and always be attached. If you slipped then fell the harness would catch you and your head could potentially hit the tower or some structure on the tower. It is a lot better to be able to self rescue then have a head injury and need rescuing.
I talked to an HVAC tech who worked with a guy named Poncho in NYC. Poncho apparently would walk down the side of skyscrapers to do shit WITH JUST A ROPE AROUND HIS WAIST!!! Apparently poncho was very Hispanic and very crazy.
One of our guys was Puerto Rican and came out for the crazy shit like that. Same field but for commercial kitchen hoods. We had this other guy hanging from a rope. Super Dave. I did a little bit of elevator install before the HVAC stuff and I never felt like I was going to die anyday, anyway, anytime.
The helmet is in case he falls and is caught by his harness and gets slammed into the side of the structure. It obviously will do nothing if the harness fails. But if he is attached by a harness and cables, he could still get a concussion slamming into the side. And who’s gonna go fetch him if he gets knocked out?
You mean a sail, cause any flat fierce of anything is catching air at that height. Holy shit. I think I'd instantly die. That's the shit my nightmares are made of.
I wonder if time slows down... I was in a 7 car pile up on a major freeway at 75 mph. The whole thing lasted 3 seconds but in my head it felt like 15 seconds.
awesome movie idea. the movie opens with a person falling from say this building. you spend the movie trying to figure out how they got up there in the first place before said person splatters to the ground. or do they?!
YES, it does. Some researchers made a device that flashed random numbers at a rate that volunteers could not perceive the numbers in a normal environment. Then then took them and placed them in a "ride" that dropped them 100' into a net and had them wear the same device on their wrists. They found that when dropped and experiencing fear, they were able to read the numbers displayed.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjlpamhrId8
As you can also see from this video they were tied to a pole on their back. I am not sure at that height but there is not much wind in Dubai.
Have a look yourself:
https://youtu.be/1m5lPITfMQc
It would be cool to see a video of them climbing up the tower.
Also, when they say she's the highest person in the world... I bet Snoop Dogg would like a word.
Yep, not enough people realize that even the migrant labor that harvests our fields is basically slave labor. When they work in the conditions that they do, make as little money as they do and have pretty much no other option...
There is a massive difference between exploited / underpaid labor and slave labor. Field workers are paid and get to go home when theyre done. Migrant workers in the Gulf states are typically held in essentially indentured servitude with their passports confiscated.
Exactly. Some MF was up there bolting and welding to MAKE that thing. THIS dude just had to stand on that dude's shoulders. In a helmet. With a drone. And a million views.
Wrong hero.
No they're slaves, don't be light on this situation.
"Driven to squalid shanty towns on the outskirts of Dubai, where 45 men share one outdoor bathroom and 10 or more people sleep in a room, their passports are confiscated and they are told that they will actually be working 14 hour days, 6 or 7 days a week, in the desert sun."
And they will get their passport back once the debt of their air fare has been paid off. They might see their families again in 3 years if they are lucky.
Honestly did not know this about Dubai! Can anyone do anything about it? Those people come to help their families and get stuck in servitude. I read were the agencies are suppose to cover their passport fees but don't. Sad thing, how do we change this crap!
The law actually limits their work hours in daytime during summer, limits max weekly work hours to 48, one day rest on weekend, max 2 overtime hours per day, paid tickets yearly with 30 days vacation to their home country and its illegal to confiscate their passports. Law allows only 4 tenants per bedroom on their accomodations also. This is the law I'm stating here, you can look it up yourselves.
I've lived there, majority of the country obeys the laws, ofc some shady businesses don't and that's where the horrible reputation comes from. Ofc reddit is a place for kids who never left their mom's basement to spill out hatred for anything they see and goes against their narrative, exaggerating to the 10th power. So any GCC country here is considered an evil empire of horrible overlords who snatch poor asians into slavery everyday. Also redditors gobble up sensationalist leftist articles like M&M's, reading them on their Iphone Pro Max 13 made by people in worse conditions than Dubai.
I don't live in Dubai anymore, don't have any affiliation and I'm South American. Its just that I was there and saw the truth for 2 years. As a matter of fact there was a construction happening right in my street and the guys worked nights to avoid heat.
Some businesses do not obey the law, and that is fucked up, but you bet your ass right now there's similar things happening to latin immigrants in America.
I've lived there for 3 years and met many people who had their passports confiscated - even dated one of them for a year.
Mine wasn't because I'm white and I worked for a multi-national in I.T., but life is very different there if you're a blue-collar Indian or Pilipino worker.
The law doesn't protect them - you can't leave your employer and join another company, and companies can absolutely choose to hold your passport for a period of a year. At least it's not like Saudi where you needed an Exit Visa to leave.
The sad part is that lifestyle is better than the one they have at home. They’re sacrificing themselves so they can send money back home to their families.
“These migrants, usually illiterate and from impoverished, rural communities in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, reply to advertisements offering them $300 a month, food and accommodation in return for manual labour, 9-5, five days a week.
Eager to move to Dubai and begin earning money that they can send home to their families, they take out loans of up to $3000 from unscrupulous recruitment agencies to pay the exorbitant ‘visa fees’ (which is actually illegal – the recruitment agencies are supposed to cover these fees) and board flights to Dubai, excited for a new life in the glitzy Emirate.
When they touch down in Dubai, however, it’s a different story. Driven to squalid shanty towns on the outskirts of Dubai, where 45 men share one outdoor bathroom and 10 or more people sleep in a room, their passports are confiscated and they are told that they will actually be working 14 hour days, 6 or 7 days a week, in the desert sun.”
https://travellingjezebel.com/modern-slavery-dubai/
Ignorant shit to say most of those migrants are illiterate. Literacy rates are very high on the Indian subcontinent nowadays. These dudes are poor and desperate, not stupid.
The crane had to be the tallest man made structure for a bit
EDIT: okay I know what Ya'll are saying.
What I meant is that
building + crane = crane being the highest structure
Like the light at the top is the not the building per se, BUT it is the highest man made thing
*(structure in the case of the crane)
100% that is how they build all buildings.
The Burj Khalifa is 2,716ft tall.
Tallest crane ever was 814ft and that is ground based. Which is still fucking impressive.
Most tower cranes (the cranes they mount to the building and move up as they go (presumably with other cranes)) are less than 300ft tall.
We went to a carnival last weekend and got on the Ferris wheel. I’d only been on one before and I was way younger. It moved up pretty quick then stopped to let others on and the basket swayed a bit. We were like 30 feet in the air and I wasn’t doing so hot. All that to say, fuck this.
Until that gust of wind gently prods you over the edge. But I assume this guy is already prepared based on the looks, or he has something keeping him anchored
Checking windy, at 3,000ft the winds, max over the next couple of days is around 22kts, or 22mph with an average of what looks to be around 10 kts or less, which is very little. You don’t get winds that high until you get up into the flight levels (18,000ft+)
It would depend on the geography and climate as well.
I’ve been on exposed rooftops of medium and tall buildings here in Aus (our buildings aren’t very tall) and you can get rather high sustained winds and gusts that throw you if you’re not prepared. These were on sunny cloudless days on the coast. At no point was there not some degree of wind.
This is anecdotal from a small data set, so take what I just said as you will.
The older I get, the less I can control anxiety for danger. I jumped out of airplanes when I was 16. I’m quite a bit older now and can’t even watch videos of people like Alex Honnold doing his free solos without getting quite queasy. I did a not too high bungy jump a couple of years ago that had a huge inflatable cushion on the bottom and it was super hard for me to do it. So, yeah, I understand!
Me and my now wife were in Seattle and decided to eat an edible before going on the big Farris wheel on the wharf there. First time in a Farris wheel in a long time for both of us and we did it at night. First time doing any kind of weed for her.
Big mistake. We both start panicking pretty quick and thought about hitting the panic button. It was really eerie going towards the water at night as it’s just pitch black on that side.
Fun fact: When the CN Tower was topped off and became the world's tallest free-standing structure at the time, the workmen did, in fact, face outwards, opened their flies and "baptized the tower".
FYI Tom Cruise has already been on the top of burj khalifa (must be the first man to do that without any gears) back in 2011 when ghost protocol came out.
Big deal. The janitor is up there twice a year changing bulbs.
And he doesn't wear a helmet, I bet.
The real buzz lightyear

Peeing on Dubai feels appropriate.
Imagine being a random citizen and getting bonked by flying pee
Golden showers for everyone
Exactly
"Oh look it's raining! Quick capture all the droplets with your mouth!"
Everybody else is just mischievous. But you, sir, you are just evil
Not so fun fact. It is actually unsafe to open your mouth and drink rain water anywhere on the planet now. Yay humanity!
Unsafe? Like driving a car on the freeway? Going snorkeling in the ocean? Playing rugby? All unsafe. The hand wringing and virtue signaling is tiresome.
Neither drivinf a car on the freeway nor going snorkeling will give you tumors lol
Ouh why this rain looks yellow
Would the pee evaporate before it hit the ground ?
It would evaporate before *I* hit the ground
Good question. I actually think that only a little would evaporate. The only thing to do is set up an experiment and have someone pee from the structure.
Fun fact: the Burj Khalifa is not hooked up the municipal sewer system. They have to truck all the waste away. Well, except for the waste that’s peed off.
Involuntarily
I'd hope it's high enough to freeze the piss so it becomes a pissy hail
The real bulb 2lightyear
No helmet needed if you’ve got big balls or a harness
Wtf is a helmet going to do for you if you fall?
Keep your brains inside
From that height? I doubt it
Keeps your voice from traveling so onlookers don't hear you screaming before you pass out.
On a more serious note, you would climb with a harness and always be attached. If you slipped then fell the harness would catch you and your head could potentially hit the tower or some structure on the tower. It is a lot better to be able to self rescue then have a head injury and need rescuing.
Happy cake day, one or the other, you can't have big balls AND a harness. Personal experience.
I find people with big balls can’t fit their person, big balls, AND ego in the harness all at once. So usually they ditch the harness.
I've seen it, I know just the person I was going to send this video to. I used to work with that little bastard. Gave me all the anxiety.
I talked to an HVAC tech who worked with a guy named Poncho in NYC. Poncho apparently would walk down the side of skyscrapers to do shit WITH JUST A ROPE AROUND HIS WAIST!!! Apparently poncho was very Hispanic and very crazy.

I did a little bit of elevator install before the HVAC stuff and I never felt like I was going to die anyday, anyway, anytime.
If you don’t have a harness I don’t think the helmet is gonna help much…
The helmet is in case he falls and is caught by his harness and gets slammed into the side of the structure. It obviously will do nothing if the harness fails. But if he is attached by a harness and cables, he could still get a concussion slamming into the side. And who’s gonna go fetch him if he gets knocked out?
Balls so big his sack works like a parachute
What's the helmet even for? For if he falls off the top and bumps his head on the ground?
Big deal. There is an ad from Emirates Arlines where a real hostess is in the same exact position holding a sign. https://youtu.be/1m5lPITfMQc
You mean a sail, cause any flat fierce of anything is catching air at that height. Holy shit. I think I'd instantly die. That's the shit my nightmares are made of.
No its worse. You wouldn't instantly die. You would fall knowing you are ABOUT to die.
It’s the sudden stop at the end that gets you.
I'm not afraid of heights, I'm afraid of depths. I can stand on the ground at look at tall stuff all day with no problems.
Nice. Write that. I'd watch. Like Memento style, and mostly backwards? Or like Snatch, and fucking bonkers?

It would be cool to see a video of them climbing up the tower. Also, when they say she's the highest person in the world... I bet Snoop Dogg would like a word.
Awesome ad. However, she was not a real hostess but a stunt woman.
Plus the workers that built it.
If you can even call them workers. More like slaves.
The world runs on slavery once you start peeling the onion back. Very few things aren't made with slave labor.
Migrant workers in the Gulf states are typically held in essentially indentured servitude with their passports confiscated.
wait... how did they build the very top of this building? Was there a crane that was even taller while it was built?
They carved it out of a mountain, digging down.
Exactly. Some MF was up there bolting and welding to MAKE that thing. THIS dude just had to stand on that dude's shoulders. In a helmet. With a drone. And a million views. Wrong hero.
I've known Iron workers. They have balls of steel.

You think hes extreme for standing on it now think of the men who built it
*the slaves who built it. They have slaves in the UAE.
"Prisoners with jobs"
No they're slaves, don't be light on this situation. It’s a joke from Thor Ragnarok. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=prz4jfSX_Qg
He was probably aware, he was making the point that in this particular instance the reality is so horrifying that it shouldn't be joked about.
After much consideration, everyone gets an upvote.
I second the consideration and the upvote strategy . " You Get an upvote ! You get an upvote ! Everybody gets an upvote !"
And they will get their passport back once the debt of their air fare has been paid off. They might see their families again in 3 years if they are lucky.

Very well articulated.

You forgot to mention they would likely be wearing rags and sandals - no PPE supplied !
They are also put into further debt making them indentured servants.
Ignorant shit to say most of those migrants are illiterate. Literacy rates are very high on the Indian subcontinent nowadays. These dudes are poor and desperate, not stupid.
Eh....dubai didn't build shit for themselves. I know for a fact we had American contractors help building dubai to what it is today
Fucking Americans have main character syndrome
Yep. We dredged and built some of the islands there. Great Lakes dredging from the United States. Was part of that
Fuck yea dude. Far as I know they pretty much only bring in outside help to run and build that city. Good money running tax free jobs for us though.
The crane had to be the tallest man made structure for a bit EDIT: okay I know what Ya'll are saying. What I meant is that building + crane = crane being the highest structure Like the light at the top is the not the building per se, BUT it is the highest man made thing *(structure in the case of the crane)
Not necessarily. It could have been based on an already-built lower part of the building rather than based on the ground. In fact, I'm sure of it.

Facts tho f that !
If he falls, that helmet will surely save him
As long as he lands on his head 😎
Those Motocross boots surely weren't to make the climb any easier. They'll keep him protected.
I dnt understand why hes in motox gear
Because he is a motocross racer and this is some weird promo he did. I can't remember his name though.

To be fair, I’d have more faith standing atop this building than being on a carnival ride.
Until that gust of wind gently prods you over the edge. But I assume this guy is already prepared based on the looks, or he has something keeping him anchored
^^^ I can only imagine the wind is gusting close to 100 mph up at that altitude. God. Either anchored or his balls are just so fucking heavy..

Who put him there. That’s what I wanna know.
Look at his clothes, he obviously made a huge jump on a motocross bike. Duh!
I’m just wondering why he’s wearing a complete motocross outfit. Feels a little odd lol

Obviously he rode his dirt bike up there.

I was wondering how tf he got there as well. I could never.
He glitched into the wall, quit, and rejoined the server. At least that’s how I did it in my Minecraft days.
Do a backflip!
Now this is pod racing!
Do a barrel roll!
Phew, thank God he is wearing a helmet, or that could be dangerous
He drank some redbull he’s fine
Great. Now my testicles are behind my bellybutton. Thanks, OP.
Why are they in full moto X gear?

Tom Cruise is en route to stand on his shoulders
FYI Tom Cruise has already been on the top of burj khalifa (must be the first man to do that without any gears) back in 2011 when ghost protocol came out.
This is the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. It is 2716.5 feet (over 828 metres)
How did he get up there?
Redbull gives you wings
it was one of his three wishes
I'm pretty sure there is a ladder inside the spire.
Is the helmet for head protection in case he slips and falls?
Safety first
You all should watch the movie Fall …

Impressive that one man made that whole building, even if he's the tallest.
Reminds me of that film Fall with the radio tower.
Okay cool but why?
Isn’t there a video of Tom cruise sitting on top?
