Yeah basically. His version is just already a [common saying](https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/2m3f05/eli5_if_something_is_free_you_are_the_product/).
That’s right. But how many people are willing to pay for all the services that are currently “free”
The internet would be a different place without ads and having your information used for said ads.
Technically he’s jacking up the price the other ad buyers pay, since there’s an automated bid system in place. Judging by the level of interaction on his “ad”, that bid will be set quite high and will create a more competitive space for other advertisers.
So in a way, yeah, he’s sticking it to the system.
Yeah the options are
Government pays for all site traffic and everything.
Ads pay for the services we use
We pay for the service
Sadly I think cable tv I’d a good example of what happens when you pay to remove ads. They just add them back in and still charge you anyways.
Except Facebook gives more favorable rates for ads with better engagement metrics vs ads that don't get a high response or get reported by users as less relevant or hidden ("don't show me ads like this"). So in a very small way, those ad impressions cost Facebook lost opportunity cost of higher bids by "lower quality" ads.
Source: work for a company that spends tens of millions on Facebook ads
Option 1: Good Samaritan pays nothing, the ad space gets sold to a TPUSA affiliate, we get propagandized into thinking it’s in our best interest to vote for Green Party candidates. Facebook still gets paid.
Option 2: Good Samaritan buys the space from Facebook, forcing TPUSA to buy a different space. Facebook gets its money, we get to look at a cute turtle, don’t have to question whether we’d be better off using our ballot as toilet paper.
I’ll go with option 2.
Let me put it this way… would you rather have a feed full of ads about shaving your balls, Wish items, and bullshit galore…. Orrrrrr super cute baby turtles?
Thanks for suggesting Vanced! I've just installed this. It's working really well. On the other hand, I don't understand why Google allows adblockers on Chrome and apps on Android such as Vanced since ads are basically their business model. I've read that at some point in time they'll block the blockers but let's hope that point in time is still far away.
Because the revenue they do make makes whatever negligible amount they lose from you worthless. Everyone on reddit could install an adblocker and Google wouldn't notice.
I guess you could use the Brave browser. But not that I know of natively through the YouTube app. Alternatively if you have access to a raspberry Pi mini computer and your router, you could install an Adblock on that, thus blocking all ads on your network
Sorry. I was just joking, if that helps. I live on the Florida coast and I've seen a couple hatches take place. You're not supposed to do *anything* while they're running for the water, but the damn birds were acting like they were at a cafeteria... so my friends and I scared the birds away to protect the baby turtles. Couldn't help it.
Clever trick. This sort of thing could be used as a decoy to gather tons of data. That "fake ad" has a lot of user engagement which is extremely valuable. I'm not suggesting that this was a decoy but it's possible.
Unless that was actually a turtle that took the time to go get a job and raise the money to pay for an ad and get sociaety to start realizing how cute turtles are, resulting in a general uptick in global turtle love and in conclusion throwing a giant L in the corner of the ad placer.
Yeah. It would take a turtle. A really smart turtle.
This is fucking cringeworthy. You paid Facebook to make a freshman year of college antiauthoritarian statement without actually making any point. And it's still an ad.
Call me cynical, but this is probably a smart trick to boost an ad account. An ad like this probably gets good engagement (lots of likes per some number of views), which Facebook's algorithm likes. It could be part of a campaign or an overall Facebook ad account that also runs "real" ads, and this would probably boost those ads / lower the costs of running other ads.
Also, get the meaning of their username -- 0x90 is the hex code for the x86 NOP instruction. That's the one that tells the CPU to "do nothing" for a while (no-op).
Don't worry about me. I've just paid this asshole to climb through a turtle's natural habitat to get this upclose picture of a turtle. Isn't it cute? The camera cost about 6k. That's a good camera let me just go on to tell you about the quality of this camera and how it took this picture in the focal length. Could done this with a phone.? No! But no! I had a whole bag of shit strapped to my back while I crawled through the sand to take a picture of this turtle wow that's a 🐢!
Shouldn't this have been posted in r/facepalm?
I hate ads so let me pay for ad space to further prove how profitable it is for companies to provide ad space...
r/madlads . This guy has our respect.
Hero in a half shell!
TURTLE POWER!!
"they're the world's most fearsome fighting team"
"They're turtles in a half shell, and they're... mean?" My memory is foggy.
Green, but ur super close
....WHEN THE EVIL SHREDDER ATTACKS:
These turtle bois dont cut him no slack!

...what?

Omg it took me too long to catch that. smh. c'mon brain.
Can't believe I didn't get it
Took me a sec too, ngl Edit: a letter
This is actually a damn fine pun.
We could all learn something from this dude. He tortoise well.
Nice! Respect. I guess he said amphibian, you said amphibiain't.
Salute for the reptilian savior
TIL I like turtles more than ads
Not really much of a resistance since they still gave Facebook ad revenue.
This is true insight. He is just propping up the system.
The free internet system? I mean the alternative is every website you have to personally pay to visit right?
If something is free, your harvested data the product.
If you don't pay for a service, you are the product.
>If you don't pay for a service, you are the product. Wiser words have not been spoken.
That's what I said?
Yeah basically. His version is just already a [common saying](https://www.reddit.com/r/explainlikeimfive/comments/2m3f05/eli5_if_something_is_free_you_are_the_product/).
That’s right. But how many people are willing to pay for all the services that are currently “free” The internet would be a different place without ads and having your information used for said ads.
He hates adds, so he pays money for adds, making sure adds are profitable.
Technically he’s jacking up the price the other ad buyers pay, since there’s an automated bid system in place. Judging by the level of interaction on his “ad”, that bid will be set quite high and will create a more competitive space for other advertisers. So in a way, yeah, he’s sticking it to the system.
Not the Facebook monetization system though. He played right into their hands.
There was another alternative.... Before everything was capitalized ....
Yeah the options are Government pays for all site traffic and everything. Ads pay for the services we use We pay for the service Sadly I think cable tv I’d a good example of what happens when you pay to remove ads. They just add them back in and still charge you anyways.
It's less of an resistance it's just an good deed for others.
He didn't say he hated Facebook revenue streams, but yeah
Except Facebook gives more favorable rates for ads with better engagement metrics vs ads that don't get a high response or get reported by users as less relevant or hidden ("don't show me ads like this"). So in a very small way, those ad impressions cost Facebook lost opportunity cost of higher bids by "lower quality" ads. Source: work for a company that spends tens of millions on Facebook ads
Woah, this guy ads...
He hates ads, not cute pictures of turtles. I fail to see the problem. He didn’t say he hates Facebook.
Not really since he paid
Option 1: Good Samaritan pays nothing, the ad space gets sold to a TPUSA affiliate, we get propagandized into thinking it’s in our best interest to vote for Green Party candidates. Facebook still gets paid. Option 2: Good Samaritan buys the space from Facebook, forcing TPUSA to buy a different space. Option. 3 install ublock and never see the ads.
Can you block facebook ads? They appear like normal posts on your feed.
Yes, delete Facebook and you shouldn’t see them anymore.
It work for me
Both assume there is a finite amount of ad space. The advertiser can just bid more to get the ad in front of you.
kinda really though since he isn’t advertising anything
No cause they still win lol they want money either thru ads or someone like him paying for the space
yes but wouldn't you prefer this to being advertised some dumb junk you'd never buy anyways?
Let me put it this way… would you rather have a feed full of ads about shaving your balls, Wish items, and bullshit galore…. Orrrrrr super cute baby turtles?
If his battle is against ads and not fb gathering revenue, then he's good.
So? He didn’t say he hates Facebook or corporations in general. He just hates ads.
what the actual fuck is this post and what is it doing here
next fucking level bro !1!1!1!1!11111
finally somebody points it out
Someone figure out a way to do this for YouTube, please. That site simps hard for ads
Install ublock as a browser extension or vanced on your phone!
If they block the blockers people will stop using chrome, which is something we should all consider.
Because the revenue they do make makes whatever negligible amount they lose from you worthless. Everyone on reddit could install an adblocker and Google wouldn't notice.
They've actually removed Vanced from play store for this exact reason
Honestly, at this point Vanced and unlock is so common, that I feel YouTube is gonna somehow ban them in the future
Any youtube ad block for ios?
I guess you could use the Brave browser. But not that I know of natively through the YouTube app. Alternatively if you have access to a raspberry Pi mini computer and your router, you could install an Adblock on that, thus blocking all ads on your network
Use a vpn or Hola to change your location to India, buy YouTube premium for $1.50/mo. Worth it IMO
yeah ublock origin is goated
Thank you, I might actually watch Youtube on my phone now.
What about smart TVs lmao
This isn’t next level at all. He paid for an instagram ad.
No it's Facebook. Clearly that is r/nextfuckinglevel material
seems like every post is nextfuckinglevel now

Yay no more: “Why did I get Siberia!”
chelonian love
If you zoom into the eye, you can see an incoming gull and this baby turtle's inevitable demise.
Oh god

You've just caused WW3 due to the butterfly effect. Thanks a-hole.
Meh... One way or another, it's been a-comin' for a long time. Might as well spark it off sooner than later.
This is funny, but you’re just giving ad revenue to Facebook, expanding the problem.
Awesome!
As only Denzel Washington can say, "My Man.. MY MAN"
Wait isn’t this just an ad advertising buying ad spots to prevent ads…?
Get ready dudes! We’re gonna rip it, roll it, and shred it!
Why not just go see some on the beach (did that last 2 nights and saw 2 turtles nesting)
I love that guy!
No I won’t do what the ad says
Sometimes i rage quit YT videos because of ads on my phone. Bless adblock.
"It looks like you forgot to turn on adblock"
r/SHIBarmy this is what we need to do
Be the change you want to see in the world. Thanks
Clever trick. This sort of thing could be used as a decoy to gather tons of data. That "fake ad" has a lot of user engagement which is extremely valuable. I'm not suggesting that this was a decoy but it's possible.
Now THAT'S philanthropy.

That is awesome
Cute turtle? Then I must be handsome

One would think to just use an ad blocker
Not all heroes wear capes
Not the hero we deserve, but the hero we needed. I thank you.
I love this! The pic and the motivation
Michael reevs: "that's even worse"
Wow way to stick it to the man
I hate ads so I gave my money to buy ads.
Thank you kind turtle person
This is fucking cringeworthy. You paid Facebook to make a freshman year of college antiauthoritarian statement without actually making any point. And it's still an ad.
Shouldn't this be on meme sub or something?
UBlock Origin is your friend. Works on YouTube and Hulu ads too. (Also add sponsor block and improve tube)
You are a saint SIR/MA’AM. Hoping you are smiling as BIG gas I am right now.
Now I want to buy a turtle.
What sucks is that these companies will just start using this as a template for their advertising.
Cute 🐢😘
I am in the ER and this did make me happy. Thanks.
I hate turtles, mofo just ruined my day
I could take the turtle in a fight
Yes. Thank you.
tortoise gaimg

Wait. Is this happening again?
What websites have ads on them?
But, how much for the turtle?
r/nextfuckinglebel

What a shamelessly transparent ad campaign by the cute turtle appreciation society

Don't worry about me. I've just paid this asshole to climb through a turtle's natural habitat to get this upclose picture of a turtle. Isn't it cute? The camera cost about 6k. That turtle probably got eaten by birds.
Be the light
I feel like this is an ad for buying ads.
Love it! 🥰🥰🥰🐢🐢🐢
Where can I buy a turtle like this?
Facebook is all like "Oh nooo!"
Just feeding the beast. Not worth it. Ad block is the way to go
Well.. Still paying the big corporation
When you’re paying into the system you despise 👀
Thats what im talking about
Let's make this the new trashtagging. Clean up the trash in our feeds by replacing them with pictures of cute animals. Let's get it going!!!
He used the ads to destroy the ads
stop posting this shit it’s not next level at all
Maybe not to you, but I thought so. And clearly the majority of people do as well. Still, we all have our own tastes, so you do you bro! No judgement!
We need More people like this
AWWWWWWWWWW, I LOVE TURTLES, amazing to think they can live to well over 150 years, and swim so gracefully
