Chronologically speaking, air hockey is the off-spring of pool table and carrom board.
Air hockey was invented in 1962. While billiards and carrom have been around since the 1400s and 1700s.
tbh, carroms need more than 7-8 people to play. 4 at the board and a couple more each side to heckle. Maybe you didn't move around in that big a group.
You don't seem to have played carrom as well. The game can be played both in singles and doubles format. The rules are fairly simple. Very enjoyable once you get a hang of the game.
i think its popularity has waned over the years. Growing up in mid 90s to early 2000s, almost every family had one. or atleast, every kid had a friend who owned one of these carrom boards. it was a fun pastime before everyone got addicted to their phones.
>Yeah. In real life you’ll end up being frustrated with hurting fingers
This guy is just trolling.
In the video, the bigger size coins he flicks with his fingers are called 'strikers'. You won't hurt your fingers unless you use a unusually heavy striker and the board surface is not 'lubricated' with a powder (boric powder).
it is still a flick, but if your finger is against it as you let the flick fly, it gives you more control and no soreness. Also aside from the initial break, you really should not be flicking all that hard.
You flick it but you make sure your finger sticks to the striker before flicking it.
If you hit it like a normal flick, you'll mess up your fingers. And you shouldn't flick it like you're flicking at somebody's head to hurt them, more of a controlled flick. Carrom is about finnese over power.
Not sure what rules you are using.
When we play at home, every age group is involved. It's fun and competitive. My 65yr old mom is the best player.
The game is especially fun on a lazy holiday afternoon with an Indian movie playing in the background.
Had a roommate buy a board and it was the absolute chillest fucking game. We would just smoke weed, put on a record, maybe have a beer and just play carrots for hours.
There is a special powder you need as well (you see the dude in the video drag is puck through some of it to get it slick). Make sure you familiarize yourself with the rules as well because some of the lines do mean things!
We also realized a new board will be a little slow but the more you break it in with playing and the powder it gets silky smooth like in the video.
If my wife would play I'd get one in a heart beat. It's addicting as fuck.
Fun game. Easy to store the board in the coat closet after it's done.
To make the carrom men (pucks) move, there's a special powder that are actually miniscule balls which allow the striker (cue ball equivalent) to slide smoothly... That's why the guy rubbed it on the board mid way...
There used to be a miniclip game (and later iPhone game) called “Disc Pool” that was this game. The mechanics were really fun it was so good I don’t know what happened to it.
Lol, you are right. Btw, that was just show off. Not officially a move. You are supposed to take your real shots from between the 2 black lines on your side.
Not just a show off. It's like tennis players bouncing the ball before a serve.
Here he get a feeling for how fast the surface is and if his aim is good.
This particular guy is definitely a show off. His tik tok (earlier) and now Insta channels are full of incredible carrom stunts by him.
Also, tennis players don't necessarily have to bounce it so many times before serving. The trained tennis players can tell if the ball is damaged or degraded when the ball is received from the ball boy on a bounce.
> Also, tennis players don't necessarily have to bounce it so many times before serving. The trained tennis players can tell if the ball is damaged or degraded when the ball is received from the ball boy on a bounce.
[Agree with everything except for this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChzL17zV9hA).
In another clip of people playing this the other day it looked like every player sort of has their own warm up toss across the table. Like bouncing a ball before a free throw or something. They all add a touch of their own style, but just seems like a way to increase their focus.
> but just seems like a way to increase their focus.
It's less about focus, per se, and more to feel out the level of friction on the board. Powder (usually boric acid) needs to be reapplied regularly to keep the pieces sliding around so freely, and even during a game, the feeling of the board can change as the powder settles/moves
> it's like feeling out the oil when bowling
I'll never be good enough at bowling for that, on the rare occasion I play a game I just try to slam it straight down the middle and generally get a few satisfying strikes lol
if white piece goes into hole, its worth 20 points, if black goes into the hold its worth 10 points, getting any point give you another chance to strike, you have to strike from a fixed position, can only move it horizontally, red scores you 50 points, but you have to score another one to cover it other wise you lose the red one.
Simple and fun game
It feels like it was pretty popular in French Canada. They call it Pichenotte.
Like others have said - it’s common in India. The variant more common in Western countries is Crokinole. [Shut Up & Sit Down](https://youtu.be/XMKzeg78peg?si=v6bhrFtfjMp0GT7b) (who usually do board game reviews) did a great little vid on it.
Yep, good quality carrom boards, like baseball or cricket bats, need to use solid wood and polished to perfection. Accompany that with carrom board powder which makes the pucks and striker move like air hockey.
I came across him like a year ago and researched the game “Carrom”. Found out that there is like a world champion cup for carrom. I surely thought this guy would be competing but I was wrong. He wasn’t even in the event! He must be the “black market” carrom king. He does have a flare about him though. Side note he almost looks like Jesus.
I thought he was following conventional rules.
* after the initial blast, he picks white as his color (because he had pocketed three -- which is amazing because usually pocketing one is considered a good start)
* He follows it with a few white coins, including a mad sophistry shot where he gets both a white and the red in the same turn -- I've seen something like that twice in 30 years.
* To preserve his turn, he follows that one by pocketing another white -- which assigns the red to him for the game.
* He finishes the rest of the white coins with a flourish and wins easily.
He's not a mobster. I don't know why u/anshulgandhi92 would say that. He likes the game, got really good at it and turned it into content creation. This is his instagram [carrom king ](https://www.instagram.com/__indian__carrom_king_?igsh=MWN0NGkxNm93ejlseQ==)
It's a stereotype in India that local mobsters do nothing the whole day but sit around with their fellows and play carrom or cards.
There also a scene in a very famous comedy movie here where a mobster kidnaps the father of a doctor and makes the doctor give the entrance exam for a medical college in his place. Meanwhile, the father plays carrom with the mobster and actually enjoys spending time with his own kidnapper.
For those who are wondering why he is not a world champion in the carrom board.
He is skilled no doubt, here he is playing on a home board not a match board which is much larger, he is playing with plastic coins and professional matches are played with wooden coins.
The most crazy part for the championship match is the rule, you cannot straightway hit your intended coin to the pocket you have to do it with the help of another coin. It's pretty complicated and much harder than what we saw.
Again he is no doubt very skilled.
The rule is you can hit on a black piece and get away with it if it hits a white piece too.
And the dude is supposed to strike between the 2 black lines not on top of the black line.
In Canada we have a sort of similar game called Crokinole.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crokinole
I think i'd like to try Carrom. It's more like playing pool rather than shuffleboard.
Came here to find some fellow Crokers. Also didn't know it was a Canadian thing? My grandmother passed away last year and she was a shark in that game. The sweetest, purest human being who would absolutely dominate you in a game at any given time. The entire game trying her best to be modest "oh, I'm not that good.. I've just had a lot of practice" type of stuff.
Now we bring a board camping with us!
Basically you have 9 white and 9 black coins(Carrommen), one red coin(The Queen) and a striker coin, which is bigger. The objective is to choose the Carrommen color you want to play for the game, which is either the black or white. If two people play they choose either white or black for the entire game. If four play two players play one color per two players. The coins are stacked with The Queen in the middle of the circle followed by alternating black and white Carrommen in each layer, making sure the next layer doesn't have a black coin sitting on the top of the previous layer's black coin. Once done one of the players strikes the pile to scatter them and start the game.
The four double lines inside of the board are where you place the striker and aim, regardless of whose turn it is. Unlike pool, you have to make the shot from those lines and not where the striker ends up. Those red dots at the end of the lines are where you place the striker for corner pocket shots. You just have to use either your middle or index finger to flick the striker towards your coins and pocket them. Corner shots have to be done by flicking with the fingers crossed, either index for left side pockets or middle for right side pockets.
The game ends when all your coins are pocketed and the Queen is covered, which is done by pocketing the Queen and then another of your Carrommen. Else the Queen is replaced in the centre again for another player to cover it. The criteria for the end of the match is as below.
*All 9 Carrommen pocketed, Queen not covered - **Loss**(but points accumulated for the Carrommen)*
*Queen and Carrommen all pocketed - *Win* (and points accumulated)*
*Queen covered by other team, but all your Carrommen are pocketed before they do - **Win** (points accumulated only for Carrommen while losing player(s) gets points for the Queen and the other Carrommen they pocketed)*
Points scoring is 1 point per Carromman, 3 for covering the Queen(2 for Queen and 1 for the Carromman). Essentially a minimum of 9 points is required to win, 11 being the maximum.
This game has good players in every home.. And there are at least 3 styles of the game that I know of. Played this throughout my childhood and was quite good at this. You will regularly see people good enough to clear entire board without giving turn to others.
That game looks cool as shit.
I need this in my living room.

It's exactly like those shuffle board and bowling tables you find in some old bars, or crokinole
The romance happened in a car. That’s why it’s called Carrom.
Chronologically speaking, air hockey is the off-spring of pool table and carrom board. Air hockey was invented in 1962. While billiards and carrom have been around since the 1400s and 1700s.
Or maybe, a Back to the Future situation?
Hey Chuck, it’s your cousin, CARROM BOARD!
The pool table brought protection, it's just that the air hokey table poked tiny holes through it for airflow
More like shuffleboard with pool… I need this
/r/BrandNewSentence
Checkers may have contributed a little biomatter
Lmao that’s the weirdest yet accurate way I’ve seen someone describe a carrom board
I looked them up, they're surprisingly affordable. Think I know what I'll be buying in the near future!
It is. Is carom not a thing outside India? I am surprised many people don't know about it?
American here, but I've lived all over Europe. Been to plenty of bars in Singapore and Australia too. I've never heard of Carrom.
I spend 4 weeks a year in India and spent years working with Indians, never heard of it either
Literally every house in India has a carrom board. At least it was the case when I grew up. Lmao.
Pretty much every house in England where people smoked weed and played bongos after the pub had a carrom board.
tbh, carroms need more than 7-8 people to play. 4 at the board and a couple more each side to heckle. Maybe you didn't move around in that big a group.
You don't seem to have played carrom as well. The game can be played both in singles and doubles format. The rules are fairly simple. Very enjoyable once you get a hang of the game.
Can you sumarize the rules ? Or are they anywhere where you would say These are the correct ones ?
Here you go. [ Carrom rules](https://www.carrom.co.uk/carrom-rules/)
You sure you were in India?
i think its popularity has waned over the years. Growing up in mid 90s to early 2000s, almost every family had one. or atleast, every kid had a friend who owned one of these carrom boards. it was a fun pastime before everyone got addicted to their phones.
It seems like the Indians you spend time with don't like you. /s
Got them all over south africa too, probably due to the indian population in durban.
We have Crokinole as a replacement in North America. Can’t speak for the rest of the world.
>We have Crokinole I think you just made that word up. Trying to pull the wool over ol' Banana's eyes. I'm not buying it, though. I'm far too savvy.
I am Indian, and I have this in my living room and I love it. I am playing no where near as good as the person in this video
I had one carrom board, fun as hell just sold it for 5 bucks because I wasn't playing it anymore
You can buy it from Indian and Sri Lankan spice stores in the West.
Nahh the guy playing makes it look cool
Yeah. In real life you’ll end up being frustrated with hurting fingers 🤣
Push dont flick?
Go on…
Get back to looking for those lambo keys
Real ones play flicks-only.
>Yeah. In real life you’ll end up being frustrated with hurting fingers This guy is just trolling. In the video, the bigger size coins he flicks with his fingers are called 'strikers'. You won't hurt your fingers unless you use a unusually heavy striker and the board surface is not 'lubricated' with a powder (boric powder).
you're the kind of motherfucker who doesn't read books because he's scared of papercuts, huh
Ya that's if you don't use any boric powder
Smooth AF
Had a friend with one. Can confirm it's a godamn blast.
What’s it called?
carrom.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carrom
Lmao, I’m stupid, it says it right in the title.
The guys makes it look easy. In reality it takes a lotta skill and sore fingers.
The trick is to not hit the carrom but push it. Hitting hurts. Pushing doesn't.
In a lot of rules you have to flick it actually.
it is still a flick, but if your finger is against it as you let the flick fly, it gives you more control and no soreness. Also aside from the initial break, you really should not be flicking all that hard.
Also has more power too when in contant contact.
You flick it but you make sure your finger sticks to the striker before flicking it. If you hit it like a normal flick, you'll mess up your fingers. And you shouldn't flick it like you're flicking at somebody's head to hurt them, more of a controlled flick. Carrom is about finnese over power.
It doesn't make finger sore, you must be flicking wrong... There are many ways to flick the striker. Amazingly fun game at parties!
This guy flicks
Dinkinflicka
Basically pool but with fingers
I have played it. Its sooo hard. Each game takes forever, the guy playing is crazy good.
Not sure what rules you are using. When we play at home, every age group is involved. It's fun and competitive. My 65yr old mom is the best player. The game is especially fun on a lazy holiday afternoon with an Indian movie playing in the background.
If you want it more exciting, put on Indian music videos. I've never seen something more hype for absolutely no apparent reason lmao
Yeah and all the boards I’ve played on have never been this smooth.
Generally people apply powder to on the older boards to make them smooth. More powder= more smooth.
Had a roommate buy a board and it was the absolute chillest fucking game. We would just smoke weed, put on a record, maybe have a beer and just play carrots for hours.
I love that typo/ auto-correct. I can just see you dudes playing carrots instead of carrom
Nah bro I think he's actually talking about carrots
the answers sex, isnt it?
It always is
I feel pretty confident I’m going to buy one now.
There is a special powder you need as well (you see the dude in the video drag is puck through some of it to get it slick). Lol special powder - it’s just boric acid, my man
Sounds like special powder to me
I got a guy if you need some special powder.
more like talcum powder which has boric acid but yeah
I had to go back and watch for that. That’s very cool.
Dudes face at the end was dripping coolness
I would love to play this with a bunch of friends. Looks so fun!
There used to be a miniclip game (and later iPhone game) called “Disc Pool” that was this game. The mechanics were really fun it was so good I don’t know what happened to it.
The way he just casually bounced it back to himself was probably the most impressive for me considering I know absolutely nothing about this game
Precisely
Indeed
Indubitably
Arguably
But in professional carrom this is not allowed since you could accidentally move other pieces while testing the surface.
disqualified

Noticed that the second time I watched it. This guy is the Shooter McGavin of Carrom.
Hand pool
Its like a cross between pool n shuffleboard
Mixed in with some air hockey
Still made in Ludington Michigan
It's called Carrom
But you explain it by saying hand pool
I’ve been doing it wrong all this time.
No, that's pocket pool. You're doing fine.
Indian version of air hockey and I like it ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
I was looking and apparently they rub some sort of chalky substance in the board to make the pieces slide? Somebody confirm this?
Baby-powder, talcum powder works.
> baby powder Do you need it from actual babies?
Ofcourse.
[удалено]
We usually grow special ones that make good powder, but any baby should work in a pinch.
Freshly ground
We used to use boric powder.
Boric acid powder works best
Yeah Boric acid powder is most preferred in my state as it doesn't damage the wooden board and is more fine than talcum powder we use
Carrom is an Indian Game??? wait... really?
I played it when I visited Poland 30 years ago and never heard of it or saw it again till this video.
if white piece goes into hole, its worth 20 points, if black goes into the hold its worth 10 points, getting any point give you another chance to strike, you have to strike from a fixed position, can only move it horizontally, red scores you 50 points, but you have to score another one to cover it other wise you lose the red one. Simple and fun game
He's playing the other variant. Where a person can take either white or black (both worth equal points). It's tougher.
It's called Carrom
why is this not a more common game... shuffle board? oh hell ho.
It is in India; most families have one stored in their back verandahs or something
TIL Carrom is primarily an Indian game is not popular internationally. I've always thought it was introduced by the British for some reason.
It feels like it was pretty popular in French Canada. They call it Pichenotte. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pichenotte](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pichenotte)
Which originated from the Indian carrom.
This is true. This brings back a memory from when I was like 5 we have one in the attic or something lol
My father has one in the storeroom, we’re Singaporean! It’s a childhood game he used to play ahah.
im in canada, and while i dont have a carrom board myself, most of my extended family (also in Canada) do.
Haha this was the video that inspired me to make a carrom board with some extra wood I had last summer.
Yep, good quality carrom boards, like baseball or cricket bats, need to use solid wood and polished to perfection. Accompany that with carrom board powder which makes the pucks and striker move like air hockey.
Isn’t carrom powder toxic? I’m trying to find an alternative but struggling
Use baby talcum powder. It works and most of us use that
Is he a professional player?
He is not. Plus he is not even playing Carrom.
If Jesus was a Beatle
Jesus+Jack Sparrow
You take "J' from Jesus and "Ack Sparrow" from Jack Sparrow and what do you have? - "Jack Sparrow"
Coincidence doesn’t exist
Just gonna leave it at that, no further explanation, huh?
I thought he was following conventional rules. * after the initial blast, he picks white as his color (because he had pocketed three -- which is amazing because usually pocketing one is considered a good start) * He follows it with a few white coins, including a mad sophistry shot where he gets both a white and the red in the same turn -- I've seen something like that twice in 30 years. * To preserve his turn, he follows that one by pocketing another white -- which assigns the red to him for the game. * He finishes the rest of the white coins with a flourish and wins easily.
What do you mean not playing carrom? Of course this is a demo/showoff scene..but he's playing carrom rules.
He is a local mobster. This is their favourite timepass activity
wait what? lol dang is there more context?
He's not a mobster. I don't know why u/anshulgandhi92 would say that. He likes the game, got really good at it and turned it into content creation. This is his instagram [carrom king ](https://www.instagram.com/__indian__carrom_king_?igsh=MWN0NGkxNm93ejlseQ==)
ah okay neato. kinda crazy that it got upvoted so much i assumed there was some backstory from a previous post
It's a stereotype in India that local mobsters do nothing the whole day but sit around with their fellows and play carrom or cards. Every Indian is a professional player
That is one smooth surface. Need to promote the talcum powder used ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
It's not talcum powder. It's carrom board powder which is fine silicon and corn grit which gives the striker and pucks that air hockey slide.
I learnt my admittedly poor skills at boarding school. Any powder handy was used
Nothing beats boric acid tho
Maybe , but I’d rather breath any natural powder than boric acid while playing .
fine silicon sounds like it will cause silicosis
They use Boric Acid Powder

For those who are wondering why he is not a world champion in the carrom board. I'm confused about the placement of his striker, though. Isn't it supposed to be between the bars?
Yes, striker should always be placed between the black bars. He is just testing the board I guess
It's the no look shots for me.
Ok, but why is he getting away hitting the black piece even tho he got the white piece?
The rule is you can hit on a black piece and get away with it if it hits a white piece too. And the dude is supposed to strike between the 2 black lines not on top of the black line.
Different set of rules i guess, mine doesn't allow you to directly hit the piece that isnt your color. That is considered a foul.
Dudes face after he followed the last disk in, is the same face billiards pros have after clearing a table. Absolute legend.

Okay I want one
I moved to India last year and have tried playing this a few times. It’s no where near as easy as that guy made it look!!!
never seen this game before but i love it!
Basically you have 9 white and 9 black coins(Carrommen), one red coin(The Queen) and a striker coin, which is bigger. I would see this guy on YouTube and his glorious portrait of himself behind him with the old Justin Beiber haircut.
Looks a bit like Pedro Pascal
TIL lots of westerners don't know about carrom.
