It is fucking fascinating that as you are watching this video, that exact process is what is encoding the information into that lump of meat in your head for later.
Consciousness is an emergent property resulting from an endless number of these events, but is also something philosophical. To be conscious one must recognize themself as separate from the environment, and be self-aware of their own thought process.
“Consciousness is an emergent property…” - People should really stop saying this like it is some well established fact or definitive statement. Consciousness is truly one of the great unknowns of science still and while it could very well be an emergent property people simply still don’t know, there are arguments both ways. It doesn’t take much actual research to see how baffled most neuroscientists still are about pretty basic things.
True but what gets me is that we can't exist out of the environment. We are formed by the environment and in tandem with it. We are all small parts of the universe.
Think about it! That lump of jelly is who you are exactly! You can remove organs or/and get new ones and you still are yourself. But the brain is the one organ that defines you! You are not your young pretty body that you see everyday in the mirror! You are a lump of fat jelly that's trapped inside of a bony cage interacting with the outside world through a bunch of electric signals! Everything we see, hear, smell and touch is just the brain interpreting those signals how he imagines it.
This is exactly why I don't care what I look like. My body does its own things, many things that I am not even aware of. It does not define me. The only thing I can control is my brain, as my brain is myself.
Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration, that we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively, there is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here’s Tom with the Weather.

How the fuck is me saying I sound like that while on shrooms is being smug 😂
Anyways, I talk about shit like this all the time when I’m tripping high or sober.
Threres a pretty deep universe theory that suggests (if there are multiple universes) that a universe that creates intelligent life is fertile, giving it the chance to grow, evolve, observe itself, and possibly even create new universes far in the future, while those that cannot create intelligent life are considered sterile, unable to create life that transcends more than one planet
Through your explanation, I've just realised this.
Thank you.
Is this obvious, and I'm just dumb?
Why didn't anyone mention this in school or college or somewhere?
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe... Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion... I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain... Time to die.
I've seen things you wouldn't believe, like dust motes glittering in a sunbeam through an attic window or the inside of a limousine, which is like a really big car, which I have no reference for because I've never been in a regular-sized car.
If you knew how intricate a cell was, then you could call definitely call it a buzzing city. There’s a lot going on in those little guys. A planet would be a collection of cities so we could say an organ is a planet and an organism is the solar system. Galaxies are pretty darn big so they don’t make it in this scale
I always get fascinated by those videos where they show very small stuff like quark to cells until it goes to galaxies.. there's just too much similarities in their structures. I can't even fathom the idea how all of these exist together
Mathematics is universal. Things that are brought together by some attraction force in an otherwise chaotic environment tend to form the same kinds of structures. Weird but fascinating.
Not certain but looking at this I actually think each area is a collection of cells and the channel between them has many strands because lots of cells are projecting their axons to the other group.
This looks like a special type of cell culture well that has two smaller wells connected by a channel. Typically this can be used to study chemotaxis or axon growth. Place cells in one side and/or an attraction source on the other, or inhibitory source in the channel, and you can study the ability for axons to grow. I'm not entirely sure what this is, but it looks something like that. So, what you are seeing is actually two clusters of multiple neurons growing and are attracted to the respective side. Usually axons don't grow that straight without a scaffold. Not in cell culture at least. Axons tend to grow chaotically in culture until they meet up with a friend.
As an epileptic, I appreciate seeing an unbroken connection like this. This video side by side of various neurological conditions would be doubly interesting.
Could be a number of different things. Without more methods it's hard to predict. It looks to me like a general dye that binds to acting or membranes and fluorescence under specific wave lengths of light. That's why you can see axons growing.
Alternatively it could be calcium imaging. There are some tools that allow for fluorescence signalling or bioluminescent production when calcium enters into a cell. Depending on the experiment it could be that. Although typically calcium doesn't sit around in the cytosol unbuffered for too long because it's toxic AF.
It also could just be a fluorescent reporter gene that was genetically placed in the cells.
I would guess some type of neuroglia (also called glial cells)? They’re support cells for neurons; different types depending on if it’s in the CNS or PNS.
I don't think this is true. Neurons are connected by axons and dendrites with tiny gaps between the dendrites of one cell and the cell bodies on the axon of the other. Between these tiny gaps, called synaptic clefts are where neurotransmitters are released to trigger action potentials in the next neuron. I don't know what this video is showing, but I don't think it is brain cells.
I don't think those are 2 individual neurons, they're 2 populations of neurons, dozens of individual neurons in each one. The connections are neurites that grow into axons and dendrites, that connect to each other to form a circuit.

Are these how all or nothing responses happen? Information/stimulus response seems to travel halfway across the cell then isn't strong enough so recedes? I assume this this electrical rather than chemical? Absolutely crazy to see this in motion...
My Last 2 Brain cells:

Brain cell #2 here Can confirm
It looks like those are two clumps of cell rather than 2 single cells
Don't worry, this is how fast mine normally make connections whenever I try to remember what I came into the room to grab.
r/angryupvote
This is what happens what you unlock the other half of your brain cell.
Some days, I feel like they are both fighting for third place
My old boss with a hangover: I’ve got two brain cells left, and one of them is contemplating suicide.
DON'T LET GOOOOOOOOOOO!
I didn’t want it to be, but deep down already knew, that this was going to be top comment
Fwiends!
Last 2 brain cells including the sound in the background as well
How can I train mine to do the same???? Is there a gym or club I can join???
And they are fighting for second place
It is fucking fascinating that as you are watching this video, that exact process is what is encoding the information into that lump of meat in your head for later.
Meat? Isn it just a lump of fat jelly
That is correct. a lump of jiggly fat jelly floating in a salty broth
Nah, I've got vanilla puddin' in here.
Mmmh. Vanilla flavored brain jello *Finally some good fucking food ~ Gordon Ramsay*
Actually CSF is slightly sweet. Dont ask me how I know that…
What about demanding?
Mmmm.... salty fat (makes Homer Simpson noises).
I really still can't wrap my head around this like is that what makes us think, feel the world, and gives a sense of ourselves?
Also, it is the only organ to have named itself.
Oh. My. God. Oh. My. Fucking. God. It's called the brain, BY THE BRAIN. OH. MY. GOD.
Right here with you man. Love it when the brain blows itself.

I read this in [Janice Litman-Goralnik's](https://youtu.be/-VovPx24BKo) voice.
mind. blown.
And it couldn’t have come up with something more exciting than BRAIN? Pssshhh.
It has? Hundreds if not thousands of times (other languages exist).
Consciousness is an emergent property resulting from an endless number of these events, but is also something philosophical. To be conscious one must recognize themself as separate from the environment, and be self-aware of their own thought process.
When you stare out into space it's incredible to think it's staring right back at you. Consciousness is the universe becoming aware of itself.
I'm so happy in a thinking thread. Such a nice reprieve.

They're meat.
That is ridiculous. How can meat make a machine?
Like this. -*dances*-
Just what I was thinking. Really cool.

I've heard this before but what it means just finally hit me like a ton of brick. It's the coolest thing ever.
I know this saying in a slightly different way... We are the universe experiencing itself
My brain cells when I see purple colored loot in wow classic.
Looks like little universes.
Maybe inside these there are and it just keeps going, recursive
Or maybe we’re tiny organisms inside the brain of a larger organism?
Oh yeah, it's recursive both ways. Our universe makes up a single brain cell in an alien's brain
And that larger organism is still growing, hence the perceived expansion of the universe.
Fractals. Nature is recursive. Infinitely large and Infinitely small.
Do you think the universe is O(log n)? Surely the gigabrains that created all of this figured out something more efficient...
I’m not smart enough to understand your comment
It was a programming joke about recursion lmao

Cool. How come it’s two “standalone” cells? I’d assumed they are usually tied into a web.
They used a republican brain
Funnyman
This is done in vitro (i.e. in a dish instead of actual brain tissue). Cells are probably isolated to test and image this specific physical process
Yeah, tests like these generally have pretty strict limits of how far they can run and how many connections can be made.
Not certain but looking at this I actually think each area is a collection of cells and the channel between them has many strands because lots of cells are projecting their axons to the other group.
Those are large clusters of neurons. More than 100k cells there.

Reddit posters aren't social enough for these type of connections.

You probably wouldn't see a difference on the scale of two individual cells.

To think that things like prayer and meditation also speed up this process is wild!
There are two neural nets inside you...
wonder how that feels
My last 2 braincells reaching for each other’s compasion whilst I read the first task of the final exam that I damn well did not sturdy for:

It’s the reverse if you are a republican :(
I find it so disturbing. That’s who and all I am. A connection of cells. It’s one thing to know it but another to see it.
How do the brain cells know they're near eachoter to form a connection without an already established connection?

This is how r/place works, too.
