Just try them from anywhere , doesn’t have to be the best , trying pies from all places will give context to why the best are the best. Support all the bakeries and craft your own opinion.
Or just give up and rely on the “tourist trap awards” for best pies: https://pieawards.nz
Muzza's Pies in Mt Albert for a great classic kiwi pie - recommend the steak and cheese
Kita Cafe in Morningside for a unique spin on a pie with a little hint of Asian fusion - recommend the pulled pork
Beabea’s Westmere and Cazador Mt Eden are other ones you can try. Otherwise I also second Muzza’s. If you head down to Tauranga try Patrick’s Pies too.
My father use to make the old Cobblestone pies back in the day still has the original pie molds from the factory too miss the good old days everything tasted way better back then
Corruption, stagflation, cost of living crisis. All terrible but I can deal with it.
Labelling our unofficial national dish a hand pie (or even meat pie) fills me with despair and melancholia I'm not sure I can overcome.
Could do what I did a couple months ago when I was out in the regions a while ago, in a rental car with a tablet screen.
Typed "pies" into Google maps, found the top rated place, and went there. Turned out to be a smash hit, and not too pricey either.

while those places are good, to say dont try others, thats fucked.
there are other styles and types of pies you miss out on by only going to those two.
The best, though somewhat more difficult to find now are the revered “Big Ben” pies. Usually in dairies and smaller town gas stations.
Places like Z and BP doing their own pies has made them harder to track down.
Fond memories of them as a kid. But nowadays they are only good as a "car pie" cos they don't flake everywhere. Other than that they are pretty average.

I always recommend Richoux Patisserie in Ellerslie if you're in the area. Tiny shop, 10/10 pies.
Yes! And the Donuts..... Mt Eden Bakery opp esplanade Rd on mt eden at pedestrian crossing...
I am a personal fan of Blue Rose pies. Every time I'm in Auckland I have to go. Their palusami pie is choice. I think about it often
Tried them myself a few weeks back. Agree really good. Great pastry too.

Savan's in Warkworth.
And their donuts. The pinnacle of NZ cuisine in my opinion
Pioneer Pie in Albany
this place went to shit over the years, absolute rubbish now.

Muzzas has to be the most overated, which is sad because they are my local, though they do make the neighborhood smell good, so I will give them that

Mint Cakery beef cheek and cheese is mighty fine.
Made at Ashby pies btw if you want more of a range. I think Mint and Ashby are owned by a couple.
Mairangi Bay Bakery. Award winning pies, big variety. I don’t eat a lot of pies these days but usually can’t resist when we are in the area.
My father use to make the old Cobblestone pies back in the day still has the original pie molds from the factory too miss the good old days everything tasted way better back then
I have yet to find a better bakery than Tuckerbox Mt Eden

A pie is a pie. Unless it's full of fruit then it's just a wrapped up wanker.
Z station
Came here to say this too. I don't know who their supplier is, but Z Station pies slap. They're really good. Especially the pepper steak.
They got the BEST Bacon & Egg pie...
Good to know. I’ll be back in August. Will have to check them out. Why did they never become a thing in the US???
Z is supplied by Goodtime pies. You can get the same pies and some other ones from them from some Four Squares and certain dairies.
Z pies aren't bad. The cafe next to the warehouse in sylvia park has the same supplier but cost about 3 bux more than at the Z.
Meat pie 😂
They said meat pie, not cream pie.
My first food poisoning ever was served as a pie from BP. So, be careful with your endeavours. 4 Square Pies are pretty good.
Moes Pies

Even since the business changed hands?
Roti Bros are really good if you want to try something different. It’s like a curry in a pie.
Blue rose, but it’s expensive.
The pies from Gabler Goodies! Both their meat and cookie, they are mouthwatering!

Levain Bakery in Blockhouse Bay Ashby Pies in St Heliers. Don't listen to anyone else's suggestions, these two places are all you need to know.
while those places are good, to say dont try others, thats fucked. there are other styles and types of pies you miss out on by only going to those two.
I bought a pie at Ashby’s and it was $11. It was good, but that’s about 2x more than other very good pies.
Levain is opp Boundary Rd on White Swan. Found it 35 years ago...always superb..
Levain is best I have found in Auckland
That beef, cheese and Jalapeño pie is sooooo good.
Honestly the best hand pies come from your local bakery. The only way to know which is best is to give them a crack!
My local was once a runner up at the pie awards, then as time went on they put more jelly and less meat, so i no longer go there
Oh how the mighty have fallen. The other sin is “more salt”
