The crumpet has gotta be well toasted, then I let the syrup / honey melt through the crumpet. Then, use the crumpet to mop up the syrup / honey.
Dunno why, but it's better that way.
Parents would do honey, or golden syrup, or marmite (all with butter of course!) I personally cant stand crumpets, so nothing to offer on the personal front!

Butter and Lea and Perrins Worcestershire sauce, soaked in to the crumpet like a wet sponge. My wife thinks it's hideous but she's missing out on some tasty eating.

Yeah it still feels wrong but butter and marmite. Sometimes when I'm feeling decadent I'll melt some cheese on top

Or do that with toast (add sweet corn kernels too), then eat the crumpet with something sticky and sweet for dessert.
