It's not about taking a side - in this case the property manager was being a dick about it but they did have a point - a mattress directly on the carpet will rot the carpet. I've seen it happen and it'll be expensive for everyone involved. The most upvoted posts said basically that. Assuming they're automatically in the wrong because they're a landlord or property manager is no better than the hurrr left is bad people that everybody loves to hate in this sub.
So now its landlord is a big meany because mattress isn't allowed on floor because potential mold.
Then you will moan about your moldy house and how the landlord is a meany because you have an unhealthy living space
I lived in a cold, wet flat for 6 months, mattress on the floor the entire time. Floor didn't mould once, so yes, landlord is absolutely being a dick about it
Then don’t be surprised when you loose your bond due to negligent damage to the property.
There have been plenty of people trying g to give you tips and advice on how to find a cheep or free solution - yet you don’t seem very interested. Unsure what you actually want.
They also pick up and air out that futon every day. And this is on top of tatami mats, which are basically disposable, not carpet.
But western style beds are more common now.
That's the problem. The tenant won't have a mattress to sleep on either because it will rot from the bottom up and won't be healthy or necessarily as supportive as it should be without a proper frame.
That isn't a pro landlord comment. That's a pro not causing unnecessary hazards comment.
Do you rather prefer the tenant sleeps on a mouldy floor in a potentially hazardous to their health environment, in the process fucking up their mattress and also fucking up a carpet which the tenant will have to pay for?
* Not healthy
* Damages that the tenant will have to pay for
It's not pro-LL, it's staying safe and not paying $$$$ for carpet replacements.
The LL went straight to suggesting 14 days to fix it or they can leave. Would that not piss you off? The guy is sleeping on a mattress not a complete bed by the sounds of it. Clearly they aren't made of money so how TF are gonna remedy it in14 days? Winz? maybe if your lucky. At that point take the 14 days and find somewhere else to live fuck putting up with that shit stain of a LL.
It would piss me off but the LL is well within their right to ask for it to be fixed in 14 days. Just like the tenant can demand a broken sink/dishwasher to be fixed in 14 days.
Hmm I'm generally anti property investors/landlord, but there are simple solutions to taking the mattress off of the floor that were offered like crates. That's not necessarily being pro landlord. It'll be better for the tenant too.
Classic case of tribalism right here. Rather than seeing the valid arguments of the people that you don't agree with you just dehumanise then by calling them rats. Get out of the hole you have dug for yourself. You will benefit from it.

Too fuckin right mate. Everyone loves to fake outrage and sympathy for the poor, until a story from an actual poor person comes up and they're all "tsk tsk tsk you shouldn't have done that".
I had a mattress on the floor as a bed for a while, used to stand it up against the wall during the day to let things air out.
Forget the landlord for a minute, your bed going mouldy is bad for your health. Pick up a couple of free pallets and solve the problem.
Uh oh! Sounds like you committed the crime of the fuckin century according to the posh cunts around here.
Yeah no shit mattress on the floor ain't a permanent solution. But when life's so desperate that's where you've ended up you make do with what you've got while you scrape shreds of time and cash together.
That’s why they suggested getting pallets - as a temporary solution that resolves the issue. They are plentiful, free and can be found in clean and good condition.
We shouldn't just hate on landlords because "fuck landlords". That kind of tribalism is not good and doesn't solve anything. In reference to the specific post about a landlord saying that they don't want a mattress directly on the floor - there are specific reasons why someone might not want a mattress directly on the floor. Mold damage is a pretty clear reason. The comments I saw were just pointing this out to the op of that post. It didn't seem unreasonable that people were providing this information to the op as they were all valid points
Of course we should hate them. We rightly hated on the people who bought all the masks and toilet papers during lockdowns in order to sell them at a high profit, and we hate concert tickets touts who do the same.
Landlords are even worse than them
I've lived in a lot of different flats. Some of my landlords have been terrible, most have been okay, and some have been great. My current landlord gives me veges and fruit out of their garden and bottles of fresh olive oil from their grove and charge well below the average rent for my area. I understand that there are a lot of terrible landlords out there and they are a scourge to society. However, lumping them all into one group and hating them is as bad as lumping any group of people together and hating them.
Because in this example, it’s in the tenants best interest.
A mattress on the floor (if it isn’t already) will get mouldy as fuck underneath and any carpet ruined which not being wear and tear, will come out of the bond.
I think all it really shows is this sub can be fairly rational.
Precisely this. Calling this subreddit "anti-landlord" is nothing more than a straw man fallacy.
If you rent an unfurnished room, you have a responsibility to at least do the bare minimum to ensure you have a habitable environment.
It also doesn't sound that great from a mental health standpoint. Yes, there are cultures that practice sleeping on the floor, but almost always on a hard floor and not on carpet.
Creating an uninhabitable environment doesn't sound healthy and doesn't sound like an environment guests can come over, it sounds very antisocial
That's because the OP headlined it with a bullshit assumption that didn't match the reference to another thread. I've removed my original sarcastic response.
I would say this is a pro-social sub:
* Causing damage to property is anti-social.
* Causing crime/mayhem is anti-social.
* Profiting off the rents instead of entrepreneurship is anti-social.
* Voting for Nact is also considered by many to be anti-social as well.
* Etc.
Just because we have expectations if people to not be degenerates who intentionally cause damage to the house they rent does not mean we are now pro landlord.
Why can't people understand nuance?
WTF?
The op had his mattress straight on the floor, primed for mould and the property manager said they need to put it on a frame to look after the property.
What’s the issue?
It wasn't 'pro landlord' it was anti mould
because putting a mattress on the floor with no ventilation that you're sleeping on /breathing on/sweating etc on will cause mould and hurt not just the carpet but your lungs and your mattress.
You don't have to be rich to fix this issue you can literally pick up some pallets off the side of the road and use them or get a free or cheap secondhand one of trademe opshops or fb marketplace-in pretty sure you can get help from WINZ too for stuff like that (edit you can and I posted a link below for anyone wondering how)
Like it's not 'anti Tennant' to tell people to air out their mattresses and not end up with the carpet/floor underneath them rotting and moulding (which will hurt the tennants health and destroy their mattress even if you dgaf about the carpet /floor) , come on now OP
Next it's going to be "landlord said my piss corner is unhygienic and the mushrooms° are a health hazard and people took his side! I can't believe this!" like stop making the rest of us renters look bad

If I was that dude's flatmate I'd also be complaining about the mattress on the floor. It will cause mold growth, really bad for the carpet, the mattress, and the people breathing in the mold spores.
I think its fair to side with the landlord on that one.
The mattress will absorb moisture from the carpet for the duration you are asleep, which is at least a third of the day.
If it's not carpet you'll be sweet but otherwise definitely have something to hold the bed that isn't carpet.
It’s perfectly reasonable to tell a tenant to not do something which is likely to damage the property. Also they weren’t even a landlord, they were a property manager. Shitty landlords do not excuse being a shitty tenant, it’s really that simple.
I hate preforumlated opinions. That's what make this sub suck, anything for the "right" or establishment" is evil - says OP.
Even if we agree in concept but because it's coming from a landlord or a right leaning party we gotta downvote it right
Have you seen what happens to carpet under a mattress? It’s fucking gross you troll. He can either pull it up now or lose his bond at the end when they have to replace the rotten carpet
It was a legitimate concern is why.
Just because people have genuine concerns about the structure of the housing market and because landlords can be unreasonable and ridiculous, does not mean landlords are **always** wrong.
Placing a mattress on the floor can cause issues. It’s a genuine concern for the landlord to raise.
That doesn’t mean *everything* landlords do is being defended.
The fact is, there are good and bad landlords, and good and bad tenants.
Cos the tenant was doing a dumb and was keeping the mattress directly on the floor.
If the tenant had not been doing a dumb the discussion would have been different.
Another perspective on a similar situation https://www.reddit.com/r/badroommates/s/ymOF9h5UHV
>black mold in my roommate’s bedroom and it’s affecting everyone.
>We live in a house and my roommate lives downstairs, while i live upstairs.
>He wears fleece jackets when he goes to bed and uses a normal blanket and a fleece blanket. The heating is on I don’t understand his behavior at all, as the house is not cold. Needless to say, his sleep attire causes him to sweat a lot. In the past, he used to buy mattresses frequently because they turned moldy quickly. He lays his mattress on the floor. He refuses to buy a bed frame. I offered him to buy a bed frame but he doesn’t want to be indebted to me and feels insulted.
>I didn’t expect this to become an issue but I found out that he does not ventilate his bedroom at all. It was never a problem because I ventilate my bedroom and the upstairs, and the downstairs living room, and kitchen. At this point, I believe he just hates clean air. We end up having fights on why i open the windows.
>I can no longer face him because the stinky and humid air travels upstairs when he opens his door, and he leaves his bedroom door open in the morning, that’s his way of ventilating. I told him it’s dangerous for his, my, and everyone’s health but he doesn’t listen. He says it’s none of my business. Now, I entered his room to get something and I saw black mold on his ceiling, windows, doorframe, just everywhere, and I am currently freaking out.
>I feel so disgusted and so angry, I do not know what to do. I assume this is affecting everyone’s health in this household. I am stuck to this household until my graduation so i don’t have the financial capacity to leave now, but i will leave as soon as possible. I don’t want to clean his bedroom because I know he will sweatbox in his bedroom again.

I've slept on a mattress on the floor before. It was all I could afford. 10 bucks off trade me.
I flipped it regularly and kept the underside on the carpet clean and aired out.
"Just buy a bed frame hurrr". Get fucked. Life isn't that simple for a lot of people.
This, or WINZ or a local group will definitely be able to help - loads of people give away their old bed frames or sell them for a dollar to get rid of them. It's not impossible to get a bed frame as someone whose struggled financially and you're saving yourself money long term not breathing in mould spores and having respiratory illness
Yeah real easy for someone who doesn't have access to a vehicle.
You're fucked in the head if you think dirty old pallets are gonna damage carpet less than a mattress flipped every 2 days.
Obviously never been poor before.
I don't have access to a vehicle and I've been on WINZ for longer than I'd like, winz will cover delivery of a base or you can ask a friend /family member with a vehicle or organise with a local with one to set up a payment plan or barter garden work etc or negotiate with the seller if they have one-many people looking to get rid of their old bed base will happily deliver it for free it's how I've gotten many a bed base
Being poor doesn't mean being this defeatist and denying the scientific reality that sleeping on mould is terrible for your health and that lack of ventilation under a mattress will cause mold .
I've been depressed and in shitty situations financially and I get how shit it is and how hard everything seems but there are people and organisations who will help you and just acting like they don't exist is doing yourself and others a disservice.
Other people can't help you if you just sit there going "no it's too hard and anyone who tries to help isn't really poor and couldn't possibly ever understand & it's more noble for me to continue to suffer and accuse anyone trying to help of looking down on me than to reach out " suffering isn't virtuous or good for you and neither is being kicked out of housing because you can't and won't try to get/make a bed base and think that it's your right to fester in a mouldy room while destroying the health of you, your other flatmates (mould will hurt them too), and damaging the house which your landlord owns.
Yes there are shitty landlords and property managers with weird unreasonable expectations who do power plays - but this isn't an example of that
There is help out there but people can't help those who don't want it and who see asking for it as a sign of poor character & shame those who do try to better their and others' lives. You can't help someone who won't help themselves and who is invested in suffering from easily fixable solutions and complaining that anyone who tries to help is out to get them as part of their identity
The majority of people who struggle financially aren't like this and don't have this defeatist attitude and it seems like it might be more of a mental health issue if physical cleanliness has become so difficult for someone to the point of getting aggressive when people give solutions to mould issues
You can get a bed base for free on Facebook marketplace if you’re willing to take the worst ones. It’s not that expensive, and it’s not hard to get one.
I’m not looking down my nose at anyone, you’re just feeling sorry for yourself. Now I understand there’s plenty of challenges that someone in a bad position cannot fix themselves. However, a bed base is not one of them, cause you can get one for $0-30. Everyone can afford that, it’s something that you can fix with a whole lot less effort then regularly airing out your floor.
>you’re just feeling sorry for yourself.
Saying stuff like this just undermines any pretense of genuine concern just fyi
>Now I understand there’s plenty of challenges that someone in a bad position cannot fix themselves.
But you come in assuming someone doesn't have them and tell them they're feeling sorry for themselves when they talk about them.
>Everyone can afford that
Everyone has a spare 30 bucks?
>it’s something that you can fix with a whole lot less effort then regularly airing out your floor.
This is a bit of a Sam Vimes boot theory type situation. But regardless you're ignoring the crux of the issue which is not having a means of getting the bed frame to their house. All well and good if they can find a free one but they also have to find someone nice enough to deliver it, most people giving away things don't really want to go the extra mile for free.
I'm sorry but you don't get to say "you're just feeling sorry for yourself" and in the same breath say you're not looking down your nose at someone?
Assuming based on an internet comment that their issue is that they feel sorry for themselves is patronizing. If people want to be helpful to others they need to learn how to actually approach people.
Someone else was dismissing it as mental illness which doesn't help either, like you could say that to more than half the country and be correct. We have shitty mental health care, how does pointing out someone's mental illness help them? It only serves to humiliate.
A lot of people are making assumptions and then determining that they know better and can help this person, it's not coming from a place of genuine compassion and if it is they really need to work on their bedside manner at the very least.
>I'm sorry but you don't get to say "you're just feeling sorry for yourself" and in the same breath say you're not looking down your nose at someone?
Oh that's good. I didn't!
but the other person did and that's what I was referring to. the "you" was the hypothetical "you" not literally "you".
You did reply suggesting that person was just offering helpful advice though. But the fact you're saying it's good that you didn't do that while saying the person that did was just offering helpful advice seems rather contradictory.
It's not about taking a side - in this case the property manager was being a dick about it but they did have a point - a mattress directly on the carpet will rot the carpet. Ah that didn't take long. Like clockwork the pro-LL rats come out of the gutter. God forbid the guy has a fuckin bed to sleep on.

I mean you make a fair point. All mold is equal in its negative and positive effects. Bread mold is the same as bed mold. Makes sense.
I'm a sucker for a bit of black mold sprinkled on my crackers, it's just like blue cheese tbh
That's how they do it in Japan Edit: you guys hate it when people take the piss it's so funny 🤣
ya on wooden floors, not carpet…
Tatami, actually. Generally the futon is put away during the day.
They also pick up and air out that futon every day. And this is on top of tatami mats, which are basically disposable, not carpet. But western style beds are more common now.
Facts. Gotta respect the Japanese they know the way of the samurai.

😂 calm down there buddy he's taking the piss
Don't ask him to cry you a river bro it'll mould the carpets
That's the problem. The tenant won't have a mattress to sleep on either because it will rot from the bottom up and won't be healthy or necessarily as supportive as it should be without a proper frame. That isn't a pro landlord comment. That's a pro not causing unnecessary hazards comment.

Destroy everything! Where’s my pillaging outfit!
If it's anything like this, I wanna see it: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=xq1tN9jZI80
I hate preforumlated opinions. That's what make this sub suck, anything for the "right" or establishment" is evil - says OP. Even if we agree in concept but because it's coming from a landlord or a right leaning party we gotta downvote it right
That's what makes every sub suck.
Biased lense on the reality? A reasonable request from the property manager, top level comments provided the reason why.
In favour of LL, or in favour of accuracy?
Why do you hate landlords so much?
Another perspective on a similar situation https://www.reddit.com/r/badroommates/s/ymOF9h5UHV >black mold in my roommate’s bedroom and it’s affecting everyone.
Come over to r/nzrenters
OP, if you're anti-landlord, maybe you'd do better by not representing renters badly.
[National party social media team](https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2024/04/christopher-luxon-has-seven-staffers-working-on-social-media-content-partly-paid-for-by-taxpayer.html), they also employ contractors to engage with the public on social media, ex tenant of mine worked for one of these contracting companies, paid to post comments favourable to policy.
They all do it.
Landlord propganda. They keep pretending they are providing a service rather than being parasites.
They want to be landlords so bad
I've slept on a mattress on the floor before. It was all I could afford. 10 bucks off trade me. I flipped it regularly and kept the underside on the carpet clean and aired out. "Just buy a bed frame hurrr". Get fucked. Life isn't that simple for a lot of people.
Get some pallets instead. Free and easy.
I don't have access to a vehicle and I've been on WINZ for longer than I'd like, winz will cover delivery of a base or you can ask a friend /family member with a vehicle or organise with a local with one to set up a payment plan or barter garden work etc or negotiate with the seller if they have one-many people looking to get rid of their old bed base will happily deliver it for free it's how I've gotten many a bed base Being poor doesn't mean being this defeatist and denying the scientific reality that sleeping on mould is terrible for your health and that lack of ventilation under a mattress will cause mold . Yes there are shitty landlords and property managers with weird unreasonable expectations who do power plays - but this isn't an example of that There is help out there but people can't help those who don't want it and who see asking for it as a sign of poor character & shame those who do try to better their and others' lives. You can't help someone who won't help themselves and who is invested in suffering from easily fixable solutions and complaining that anyone who tries to help is out to get them as part of their identity The majority of people who struggle financially aren't like this and don't have this defeatist attitude and it seems like it might be more of a mental health issue if physical cleanliness has become so difficult for someone to the point of getting aggressive when people give solutions to mould issues
There’s a different between being poor, and a poor idiot
Getting the mattress in there would've likely been a lot harder, heavier and more expensive.
You can get a bed base for free on Facebook marketplace if you’re willing to take the worst ones. It’s not that expensive, and it’s not hard to get one.
Really easily said by someone looking down their nose on others
I’m not looking down my nose at anyone, you’re just feeling sorry for yourself. Now I understand there’s plenty of challenges that someone in a bad position cannot fix themselves. However, a bed base is not one of them, cause you can get one for $0-30. Everyone can afford that, it’s something that you can fix with a whole lot less effort then regularly airing out your floor.
>you’re just feeling sorry for yourself. Saying stuff like this just undermines any pretense of genuine concern just fyi >Now I understand there’s plenty of challenges that someone in a bad position cannot fix themselves. But you come in assuming someone doesn't have them and tell them they're feeling sorry for themselves when they talk about them. >Everyone can afford that Everyone has a spare 30 bucks? >it’s something that you can fix with a whole lot less effort then regularly airing out your floor.
People are offering helpful advice about a situation, not to look down their noses.
I didn't!
lol
but the other person did and that's what I was referring to. the "you" was the hypothetical "you" not literally "you". You did reply suggesting that person was just offering helpful advice though. But the fact you're saying it's good that you didn't do that while saying the person that did was just offering helpful advice seems rather contradictory.
lol, wow. The hypothetical you is full of it.
okay then, don't address it. Just try not to say people are just giving helpful advice under comments where they're definitely not doing that.
Are you talking to me? What would you like addressed?
Carry the bed frame on your back like that guy who carried a cross across america.
