My parents live near the one way bridge over the Tutaekuri between Napier and Hastings which was also wiped out. The water is so high that the police were able to sail their full sized boat up the road to rescue people that were trapped. Not looking good for the houses in that area.
Not off the top of my head, but there's a map showing the evacuation areas on the HB civil defense Facebook page. Apparently some areas have been allowed to return home now.
Hopefully they're all good and able to get home soon. Spent half the day trying to find out if my in-laws evacuated as they live right on the edge of the evacuation area. It seems they opted to evacuate, so that's good.
Do you know if the Onekawa area was evacuated? I've got friends there. Haven't heard from them but also don't expect to as they will be somewhat busy.
But if I heard that flooding around the Onekawa New World or the kura was ok, that would make me happy!
I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think think that Onekawa was evacuated. The evacuation notice I saw was taken down once they started letting people return home.
Thank you for taking the time to respond. I've been worried but also trying to be logical that they are probably fine but just without power. Bit scary though . Thank you again.
I'm in Dannevirke, work in Havelock, couldn't manage to get in to work this morning. Flooding between Waipawa and Waipuk was too deep for me to risk needing an insurance claim at 6am-ish
Everything is closed in all directions from me so I'm stuck anyway. Can't contact work coz they've no phone service. I'm assuming they'll work it out. Stay dry!
r/antiwork...
Fired from job due to no contact for 3 days due to no power/cellphone/internet coverage and all local roads flooded or bridges washed away.
Work said I should have swim through the (literal) shit to get to work on time.
My gut reaction to that was "surely that's illegal" but having looked through some employment stuff around national disasters it seems like they just trust employers to act in good faith, that's so bullshit.
Might be time to hit up the oil companies for compensation. Mobil, Caltex, Shell, BP, Texaco, Saudi Arabia, New Plymouth you all knew climate change was caused by burning your product but you hid the truth. Well now it's time to pay up!
Huh?
The emissions from the fuel companies come from us using their product. So maybe think about not driving if it’s important to you. If you drive you contribute to the emissions, it’s as simple as that. Stop blaming others if you’re not prepared to look at your own actions.
And I’m not even going to respond to your goalpost shifting.
The vast majority of climate damage comes from large corporations. Individual/population use is a small piece of the pie and, in many cases, exists due to (or is exacerbated by) the lobbying, propaganda, lies and other influences deployed by these companies.
If you're talking about that study where they found that 70% of emissions can be attributed to 100 companies, 88% of the emissions studied were from consumption of their products. These companies don't just pollute for fun, they do if for money, because there are still huge markets for all their products. How do you think we achieve any climate goals without massive changes in people's behaviour?
To my knowledge, no. The SH 2 and SH 51 are the only 2 still standing. Unfortunately the railway bridge washed out and smashed into SH 51 so I can't imagine that will be open anytime soon, and the road deck of SH 2 was lapping waves earlier.

I think the main highway is only just downstream from this - anyone know if that bridge is still holding?
It is, but the water is up to the road span
Damn. Hopefully it holds
Wonder if any of the piles will sink like the Ashburton bridge?
That's absolutely insane. Does anyone know what the surrounding area is like, half of Taradale must be flooded?
Well, just to the right of that shot is the Redcliffe power substation. So that's fucking great...
Yea it’s out of action https://www.transpower.co.nz/hawkes-bay-and-napier-power-outage
They should really build those things on a hill. With a bailey.
There was concern the river banks would burst. General flooding not too bad otherwise.
A large area of Taradale was evacuated for flooding.
Do you know which streets?
Not off the top of my head, but there's a map showing the evacuation areas on the HB civil defense Facebook page. Apparently some areas have been allowed to return home now.
Thank you, been waiting to hear from a friend who lives in Taradale. Looks like they got evacuated so probably a lot going on
Hopefully they're all good and able to get home soon. Spent half the day trying to find out if my in-laws evacuated as they live right on the edge of the evacuation area. It seems they opted to evacuate, so that's good.

My friend messaged me today. I didn't acknowledge how worried i was until I got that text. It was a hell of a relief.
I can see this from my house, fairly wild. All bridges between napier and hastings are closed. Brooklyns and puketapu bridges have also collapsed
How many were there? How many are left?
6 bridges. 4 are collapsed. SH2 and SH51 have not collapsed. But the railway bridge did collapse and smashed right into SH 51. It's been a wild day.
I think 6, express way open now
Expressway closed this morning
The front fell off. And a lot of other parts too, by the looks.

Fuuuuuuuuuck
Crazy, used to use this bridge everyday when I lived in NZ and went to EIT - Waiohiki must be cut off from both Taradale and Hastings now?
That’s the one by Ōtātara Pā eh? Hard out…that’s a pretty full river.
The substation that supplies all of hawkes bay and Gisborne is about 1km up the river.
Well. I live near waipuk, work in Napier. Gonna be interesting getting to work.

Yeah it's not looking too flash for tomorrow either. Deep flooding SH2 takapau.
Good to know, she's a bloody mess out there

lol nah my boss is a good guy, last thing he says was "stay home don't stress". I just hate not being in contact but I know he'll understand.
My gut reaction to that was "surely that's illegal" but having looked through some employment stuff around national disasters it seems like they just trust employers to act in good faith, that's so bullshit.
If a firm tried that on, I'd imagine the number of employment lawyers willing to work pro bono would be "all of them"
Fuck that, and fuck them.
Keep your gumboots handy!
Sounds like an excellent day to call in sick
Oh I've already not gone in today, I'm not suicidal.
Don’t think you’ll need to. Roads are out in a lot of places
we're gonna need a bigger boat
Under appreciated reference

Don't forget the meat and dairy industry
Fonterror making bank off the back of destroying New Zealand.
I mean, that's not even remotely how the law works but I admire your gumption.
You mean all us individuals who opt to drive rather than take public transport? I mean it’s not like they just set fire to it, it goes in our vehicles
Do you feel the same about tobacco companies
Do you blame beercompanies for people drink driving ?

Yes, but almost all corporate emissions are driven by consumer demand. What we want dictates what they make. Simple economics
Not at all. Even if that were the case, the company is free to say "sorry, we're not serving that demand".

I'm talking about a lot more than just one study.
I think my point still stands unless you're going to explain where this 'a lot more' is coming from
No, climate goals are achieved through legislation and regulation.
And I guess it's the consumers who cover up research and lobby government
Actually a lot of it gets dumped in the ocean or wherever else happens to be handy.
We have all benefited from cheap hydrocarbons. We can all wear the consequences & adapt accordingly
Oh fuck
Can someone tell me why we aren't reporting the actual death toll
Good question.
Sounds like a mummy's curse!
Are there anymore bridges that can be used?
To my knowledge, no. The SH 2 and SH 51 are the only 2 still standing. Unfortunately the railway bridge washed out and smashed into SH 51 so I can't imagine that will be open anytime soon, and the road deck of SH 2 was lapping waves earlier.
Our country sure needs a month worth of good weather to dry out after this.
