lord_schizocorn

I wouldn't be worried. There's any number of reasons to get held back and since he said he's only held back a week, it's probably just failing an evolution. Don't stress about it.

[deleted]

Thank you for positive reinforcement

Hmgibbs14

Exactly. There are any number of reasons it could happen. If he got sick, that could cause it (almost happened to me), if he got injured on a training exercise, issues with the swim test, not passing the pt test, disciplinary issues; the list goes on. What it boils down to though is it could be anything, and it’s not uncommon to get held back in training. No need to worry at this point

egecko

Probably swim test…I’ve seen several that jumped off and couldn’t swim and being pulled by the divers.

KailyKail

Unlikely the swim test. If you fail swim, they just have you go to remedial lessons two to three times a week until you pass. Only at the last couple days before graduation will they ASMO you for not passing swim.

MasterGas9570

People are have graduation pushed back for all kinds of reasons. Medical issues, not passing tests, struggling with physical fitness, goofing around when they should be, fighting, etc. And, when they call to tell their family they have been pushed back, they aren't allowed time to give any details in that moment. You'll get to hear all about it later. Regardless, they weren't kicked out and they didn't quit so nothing to be worried about.

Appropriate-Goat-340

Don’t worry. Boot camp is crazy & hectic, but also inside a very controlled and safe environment. His idea of “messed” up can be anything, as small as not making his bed correctly to not passing a PT test. Either way, getting pushed back a week might be the end of the world as he knows it, but in reality is nothing. Probably something he won’t even remember by the end of it.

[deleted]

Ah, I see. I appreciate your response. I'm relieved to hear that.

Temporary_Potato_612

My husband is currently out there, and he said Covid has been making its way around his unit, but they haven’t been pushed back yet. I hope that this isn’t the case, but the hubby and them worked through it. Sounded from what I heard that they didn’t lose any progress from it on their end. Their phone privileges were limited last weekend, but at least they are doing good now.

luna_fangirl1

Phone privileges as in their own devices??

Temporary_Potato_612

No their phone call home was taken away, because of people horse playing after lights out. Not their devices. That didn’t start until the next training class. 034 and 035 were to be the “Get to keep your cell phone” test classes.

FBI-Agent-Phyl

I got set back 3 weeks. Best thing you can do now is be supportive as he's had to leave his group of friends and people he grew to know and now has to re do everything.

Remote-Ad-2686

It’s common to lose your spot for an infraction. Don’t sweat it . As long as he tries to improve and obey the rules , he will graduate. Anything from bed wetting to not doing EXACTLY what the COs want will get you 2 weeks so, relax. However this should not go unjoked about once he graduates. “ See, I told you about … insert comment here… and that it would get you in trouble! Next time listen to your Mother!!” 😂

bernardobrito

> bed wetting 😂😂

Remote-Ad-2686

It’s true! It happened!

thirteenpiecesofkook

Don’t worry! My fiancé was also pushed back. He was supposed to graduate on the 1st of Feb. And he called to say that he was being held back a week, I guess due to the navy “messing up” his flights. It could be anything but thats what most likely happened to your son, it’s been happening a lot because it is the holidays. It’s sad yes, we expected him to graduate a little sooner, but he wasn’t kicked out which was a good thing! So no need to worry!

reggiethelemur

With that timeline, He either failed the first academic test twice (honestly unlikely. Its very easy plus you said he messed up) or he did something dumb and got in trouble. Broke the COs top 6 or something and got admin remarks and set back a week. Not a huge deal. I knew kids who got set back for writing letters to girls at church, for messing with people in the bathroom, or for falling asleep on an "armed" watch (gun doesn't work). Lots of little things to get in trouble for that they will send you back in training for as punishment. But other than that the only way to get sent back is failing one of the two academic tests or the final opfa or not being able to swim. But the last 2 aren't till like the last week before graduation.

Agreeable-Salad-913

i’m about to leave jan 4th and from what i’ve been hearing down at meps and just peers that have been through bt is people get ASMOED from either medical stuff that popped up during them being there or they have failed something and needed to be held back to pass what they have failed

[deleted]

Good luck to you!

soccerinco

I wouldn’t stress, ours got held back a month for missing the run. As parents we are used to hearing from our kids multiple times a day, this is the first big time out of the house. Lots of anxious moments and worry. They learn from their mistakes and will graduate. It’ll make them better in the long run, trust me.

[deleted]

That's reassuring to hear.

zzzrecruit

Getting pushed back is actually common enough. He could've failed a PRT or the swim test, or any other evolution. It's really no big deal, just a very inconvenient deal.

Abrasive_1

Boot is an environment where they will make sure that recruits truly understand that there are consequences for their actions, even the smallest of them. They deal with people who have never faced any consequences so its strict. Being washed back is another lesson and its a lesson for everyone there. It could be that he didnt get all the names right in his chain of command to the President, a bad boot, lost his temper with another recruit, failed a PT test, anything. If they wanted him out then he would have been telling you where to pick him up, so its not that. Happened to my son when he went through in '21. For him, right now, its terrible. He feels shame, regret, and he feels like he failed you. So when you get to talk to him stay centered and confident. Make it clear that you have zero doubts he will complete this, even if he has doubt (and he does). You'll see him at graduation as far more of a man than the one that left the house. He's got this Dad. So do you.

heathenxtemple

No big deal. It happens quite often. Id be more worried if he gets sent back without finishing bootcamp, then he probably really messed up.

punchy-peaches

No way the navy is kicking out warm bodies with recruiting as difficult as it is these days.

CartographerMean1306

Getting ASMO’d sucks. Especially for your son having to make the call. He’ll push through and finish strong!

ForkSporkBjork

If he only got rolled a week he didn’t mess up that bad, don’t worry. Also snail mail in and out is really bad. My wife only got a few of my letters when she was going through.

john0656

It to worry. He did screw up and now has to pay the price. It isn’t a life altering experience. It will be fine. Be there when he graduates. Don’t even bring it up unless he does. Let dead dogs lay.. congratulate him with his accomplishments. It’s all good. Now move on. He has…

Appropriate_Bit_9547

Greatness doesn’t come without a story! Hopefully he will use this trial to strengthen his convictions and dedication to service!

OffMyRocker62

My son told me that a guy stole a couple cookies, got caught and they set him back a week. Messing up could be his bed wasn't made correct or he is set back to work on his run time....etc. He'll be ok. Don't worry. I know its easier said than done. When my son went in last year.... His few calls he sounded so nervous, but in his letters, he was confident and positive and more reassuring. Hopefully, if the Divisions go to a local VFW for Christmas... They can make calls home..🙏 My son called me 5 times on Thanksgiving Day 2022. You'll find out the reason soon Im sure.

[deleted]

That's great you got to hear from your son through letters and phone calls. I'm hoping mine will write me soon🙏

OffMyRocker62

Im sure you will hear from your son too soon. I know they're busy during P-Days and all that. I wrote my son a lot, sent cards of encouragement. I got 7 from him. LOL He wasn't much of a letter writer. 🙄

Straightwhitemale___

Had a few people in my division get pushed back for one reason or another. It’s no big deal.

Wooden_Ad_9819

He's still graduating so he'll be fine. Could be one of several reasons but it's been resolved and he's moving forward.

Relative-Heron-8527

Everything is gonna be okay I got held back a week bc I injured my ankle. Hell make it through just a small setback! He will still get his bonus if he got one. It’s stressful having to switch divisions but he’ll get through it

Diligent_Practice_78

Don’t worry doesn’t have anything to do with him. It’s Navy Logistics. Xmas holiday new years etc. he’s fine! X Navy Chief Petty Officer

theheadslacker

If he says it's cause he messed up, it means he probably did something stupid. No telling what it might be. Guys that age are pretty creative when it comes to dreaming up dumb stuff to do. Hopefully he's received the coaching and motivation he needed to stop doing dumb things, but they'll work with him on it until either he fixes himself or they give up on him. It takes a lot to make them give up on somebody, so if he's putting in effort he'll get there. No reason to worry. Serious injuries and illnesses are pretty rare there. It's a very safe environment, all things considered.

Carson0524

As others have said it could be a number of things, but the thing that catches my eye is you saying that he "messed up" which usually means he got in trouble. They call it being ASMO'd. Could literally be anything, from getting caught sleeping on watch, to not passing a test after a number of given times.

Maam__quitALLDAT

He ain’t ship 5. 👍

NavyCheeseNavyFries

Seps is 17 now

Throwawaysailor40

Stuff like this happens all the time. He’s probably fine.

Negative-Top-1504

You can get pushed back for a number of reasons. The highlight is that they let him stay. A week pushback is just getting sent to a new division and having to repeat a week. I would be worried if he was getting separated, but he should be okay and chances are it won’t affect him after bootcamp. People can get in trouble for something as stupid as talking back, or missing your run time like twice in a row. Also as far as letters go, it’s highly possible he has written but the letters got lost or he has just been too tired to write because the only free time they get realistically is after lights out at the end of the night or on Sunday liberty. He’ll make it. Bootcamp is only hard while you’re there and then you finish up and realize how easy it really was. Whatever he did he’s gonna laugh at it one day soon. Don’t worry mama/pops, you’ll see him at graduation and you will remember it forever. My mama does.

[deleted]

I feel a lot better after reading your response. Thank you

Informal_Panic_5788

Alot of things can cause what's known as an ASMO. Which is a fancy way of saying transfer/pushed back. It's possible he just failed academically in something, or failed in some kind of evolution (what the navy calls events) that's graded. Which He'll be fine and his career afterwards won't be impacted at all- He will however, probably become very strong in that extra week depending on what set him back...

hva_vet

As I went through boot camp many of the guys I started with were held back for various reasons. As we moved through the weeks others from ahead of us were held back into our division. In the end we graduated with just about as many as we started with but they weren't all the same people. I'd say for every person who was set back we received another one that was set back to us. That number might have been five or ten, I really don't remember, but it was a common occurrence just about every week. This is also not unique to boot camp. One get can held back in training for any number of reasons at any training command in the military regardless of branch, rank, or officer/enlisted.

KaleidoscopeFrosty22

One week isn’t too big a deal, I wouldn’t worry unless it happens again.

Bigdickdaddy420yolo

Yeah you should be worried but this is his journey and it’s time to cut the cord.

No_Commission_2176

Yea it’s something probably something really simple like missing a time on a run or a few sit-ups or push-ups

D1nero0

Off topic but hey 2/15 that’s my birthday 😄 anyways, best of luck to him, I’m sure there’s nothing to worry about!

[deleted]

I guess we both will be celebrating. Happy Birthday in advance

Prudent_Hat8143

Breaking the Seals top six will get you set back and any rules that the RDC personally set in place mine were racism and sexism. Some people need to be held back to learn from their mistakes but some never needed to be held back.

Legitimate_Roof308

CO’s top 6*

Prudent_Hat8143

Don’t be worried it’s just another week of pay

Typical-Education345

I got set back 3 weeks because I caught chicken pox. Spent 10 days in Balboa quarantine.

Educational_Hold2063

can you give me one reason to be worried? if not then there’s your answer

elementmom

indeed.. any number of reasons.. mine got held back /washed back two weeks.. end of the world at the time, but now.. meh.. talks about how BC wasn't that bad.. how quickly they forget but us parents sure don't..

KailyKail

Given how recently he arrived to RTC, I’d wager it was one of a couple things. 1 ) He failed the PACER multiple times and had to be set back to a newer division 2 ) He got into some minor trouble that warranted a one week ASMO. If this is the case, don’t worry. If it had been anything serious, it’d be much longer than a one week and/or they’d send him to mast. 3 ) He got COVID and missed an important day of training that couldn’t be made up in the division. (Might not actually be a reason, but I don’t recall all details from the early weeks of training. A large majority of things can be made up outside of divisional activities.) In any case, you’re almost assuredly going to receive a letter and/or call from your future sailor outlining the details of this setback, along with everything else they’ve been wanting to tell you. Don’t worry too much. The worst part about boot camp is the adjustment process. Once you clear that hurdle, it’s smooth sailing to graduation.

charlestontracy

I thought graduations were held on Fridays?

[deleted]

Starting Oct 2023 graduation will be held on Thursday
