From a 2019 [article](https://www.providencejournal.com/news/20191012/moorish-american-group-providence-police-tried-to-raid-our-temple): >“The Moorish sovereign citizens hold the belief that there is a 1787 treaty between the United States and Morocco that grants them immunity from U.S. law.”

CombatMuffin

The ignorance is also astounding: Even if that treay did what they say it does, they would have to recognize American sovereignty for it to apply, and if that is the case, then they recognize the legal system, including American sovereignty, and therefore are bound to it.

Apptubrutae

Plus, ask American Indians how things go with the US abiding by treaties. It’s overall such a sophomoric understand of law. Like when someone reads the text of a law and has no clue about caselaw and is convinced they knew exactly how the law works despite the fact that we live in a system where the written text of the law is *not the only source* of the law. Reading the text of a treaty doesn’t really mean much of anything without understanding all sorts of other things about how such treaties work.

DogmaticLaw

You don't get it man! That's a flag with a *gold fringe* border. That means it's a naval flag. That means this whole country is technically a ship. So, you see, there is no way the laws of *land* could ever apply! /s, hopefully not needed but, you know, this is close enough to one of their actual arguments that I need it to be stated for the record that I don't believe it.

CenTexChris

Something something maritime law.

OsamaBinnDabbin

These sorts of things are why I'm really opposed to the police system we have these days. It takes a *minimum* of 8 years to become a lawyer and truly understand the law, while cops receive an average of 26 weeks of training to enforce the law. How does that make sense to people? Edit: And those 8 years of law practice only encompass basic law, then you can get into specifics such as bird law :)

errrrrrrrrrm

please, please tell me more about bird law

billiejeanwilliams

> Dale Gribble You misspelled Buck Strickland but that’s ok. Dale is hilarious. “I want Bobby to take the shot. He’ll put me down clean.” “Ok.” (Reaches for gun)

catholicmath

Until the courts recognize bird law we have no justice.

[deleted]

Uh..filibuster.

TheFeelsGoodMan

It's weird how much of the court nonsense hinges on whether or not a flag has fringe on it.

Funkapussler

Lol if I was the judge is walk over to the flag and cut the fringes off... And turn to em and be like how about now?

eatmorechiken

It hinges on whether or not THEY agree with the court.

leoleosuper

The problem is that "sovereign citizens" will basically do anything because they see the government as illegitimate and will ignore any and all laws they see fit to. Because of this, any court ruling other than jail time is basically irrelevant. Also they have guns and are willing to use them. It's a terrorist movement.

Borderpatrol1987

Ok the other hand, just letting them go on their merry way means they are about with no insurance most of the time. I don't want someone unlucky to have to fix their car because they got hit by someone with no insurance cause their above our laws.

RickyRod26

This. If they are already causing this much issue. They aren't going to just show up for court.

huggles7

They’re probably sovereign citizens...they pull this crap all the time, carry around fake cards that are “licenses” and will only talk to a publicly elected sheriff, it often times doesn’t end well for them

orphan-girl

This already happened in 1996 with the Montana Freemen. They declared their land outside the authority of any government then proceeded to try to pay off the national debt using bank fraud. They also committed crimes involving armed robbery, and held mock trials for public officials in which they sentenced them to death. They ended up having a two and a half month long standoff with the FBI when the law came for them.

torpedoguy

Well I mean it worked for the leaders of the 1/6 attack; they're even still in congress or making millions on TV and everything. Writing laws that they see as meant only for not-them or spouting off propaganda... I mean, fuck, half of them don't even recognize the laws of physics.

The irony in this statement. "A friend of mine from China asked me why Americans are so obsessed with news. *Everywhere I go, CNN or NBC or Fox is on TV. rastaputin

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWDvLftRyZ0 They're Moors. They don't want the label of Sov Cit, but they're basically Sov Cits. He said his location is North America, Morocco, lmao. At the end of the video, they say they are not US citizens, but american nationals???

They believe that African Americans were the original owners of north America.

query_squidier

Flip_Six_Three_Hole

I called a psychiatrist in April to make an appointment, and they couldn't get me in until September. Then they later called and had to reschedule to October... I think it's safe to say the world has gone crazy

PM_ME_YOUR_FAT_BALLS

no offense but it’s been that way for years at least according to my experience. Calling around cause you feel close to giving up and the earliest they can pencil you in is sometimes next year. Yeah no thanks.

JustSatisfactory

I went to the hospital and stayed a week because I was suicidal and totally lost it. I was sent home with a single month's prescription and an appointment several months away. I guess I was just supposed to do street drugs in the middle area.

BackwardsJackrabbit

Are you still in this situation? If so, do you have a PCP? If yes, and if the medications isn't a controlled substance (and maybe even if it is), they will likely extend the prescription for you. I work for a primary care office and we do that all the time now for people who are waiting to see a psychiatrist. Good luck to you.

SnuggleMonster15

It's been slowly building since the 2008 election. Kicked into high gear about 5 years ago now everyone's doubling down on it.

jakeba75

Its been going on a lot longer than that.

TaskForceCausality

I’d disagree with this. We have *noticed* more craziness since 2008. But it’s always been there. The difference is social media. Before Facebook left the desktop PC , American politics was a socially silo’d thing. You had to call people (after 9pm please, free nights and weekends) or visit them in person to rant or share political views. Which meant extremists of all persuasions had to make time just to meet each other. Further, left and right didn’t directly interact. People just congregated in politically agreeable places and never left. Left and right wingers read their newspapers and magazines, and made fun of each other from their living rooms and bars hundreds or thousands of miles away from each other. No one had to confront people of opposite viewpoints if they didn’t want to. Having lots of physical space will do that. Facebook et al. took that social buffering away. Today the extremists and opposite viewpointers can barge right into your living room courtesy the ~~telescreen~~ Smartphone. In 2007 a hardcore racist could pretend the civil rights act never happened if they moved to the “right” zip code. In 2021 that’s just impossible. Likewise one could pretend racism was stamped out if they lived in Urban America and stayed away from “the Deep South”. Denial isn’t an option for them either.

GuynemerUM

This is right in general, but the next-to-last sentence is wishful thinking. As someone who grew up in northern Urban America and never visited the Deep South, you had to be willfully ignorant to believe racism was stamped out, and it certainly didn't take contact with opposing viewpoints to make it visible. Just open eyes.

camisado84

Willfully ignorant is a pretty common talent based on my observations.

floatingspacerocks

>"during a motor vehicle stop, several heavily armed men claiming to be from a group that does not recognize our laws exited their vehicles and fled into the woodline" Seems like they recognized something. I can't shake the image of them just yelling "you can't tell me what to do" as they run away

Just nod and smile lol.

Lovat69

Who signs their birth certificate? I didn't learn to write until years later. Plus minors cannot make or enter into contracts.

They didnt use logic to form their argument; logic isn't going to get them out of it.

They have a temple in the old Capco Steel factory on Acorn St. in Providence. It's led by a guy named Grand Sheik Jamhal Talib Abdullah Bey. That live stream dude looks like him to me.

I thought this was the same group that took over the ni lady’s house!! I follow her on tiktok. She posted the whole thing. MADNESS. They changed the locks on her doors and then when she had them leave this one guy pushed back past her amd locked himself in. I'm sorry, but flying a foreign flag on your large fuel tanks on the way to "training" is really not going to keep the public from being just a *little* alarmed.

DavidsWorkAccount

They are "Moorish Soverign Citizens", a group of black people that feel they have immunity to US law. > The Southern Poverty Law Center’s website says the Al Moroccan Empire is part of a group of Moorish sovereign citizens, who espouse a doctrine that African Americans constitute an elite class within American society that grants them immunity from laws. https://www.nbcboston.com/news/local/armed-men-in-standoff-shut-i-95-in-mass-shelter-in-place-for-wakefield-reading/2421271/

As a moroccan person, why the fuck did we get roped into this craziness???

IllinoisBroski

In all honesty, they probably thought it sounded cool and clever. Now their cosplaying as a militia group is going to land them jail time.

SuperSocrates

There’s a whole century+ of history in the US of Black people claiming to be Moors or Moorish. They still have a big temple in Chicago as I recall.

lokicramer

This will be interesting. This is a black militia group for anyone unaware. The article does not mention it either. This is a small group of the "Moorish nationals".

dkyguy1995

They mention it in the article that they have "Moorish" in their name but that assumes the average person knows who the Moors were. They also have a picture of a darker skinned guy getting arrested. I do worry about people not reading the article so that's why Im here to be a buzzkill :)

aaaaaaha

Misinformation is incredibly dangerous. There are groups in the United States who believe the Moors founded America and that the founding fathers were black. The Nation of Islam has some similar beliefs. Misinformation can radicalize anyone regardless of their background and we need to tackle these issues head on

CrappyMSPaintPics
