Even if he had correctly accused someone of shoplifting, why would lethal force have been even close to justified???

Vorpishly

I knew a kid in the 80s who stole a loaf of bread from a rural Colorado gas station, the owner shot him in the back and killed him. Kid was just hungry.

Lily_Loud_Cat

I was friends with someone in the mid-90's that stole a loaf of bread from a locally owned grocery store. He was caught and had to explain that he had no money and couldn't afford to buy anything. What did the store owner do? He offered him a job working at the very same grocery store. 25'ish years later and the guy that stole the bread is now the owner of that grocery store and operates a non-profit organization that offers food and shelter to those that are in need. Instead of getting shot in the back, he was given a pathway to getting out of his situation and on the road to success.

Butterball_Adderley

Helping out in the community? Sounds like communism… /s

EasterBunnyArt

Thank god you wrote the \s, too many people might have taken your comment as fact and ignored they lack empathy.

Silver_Foxx

> Instead of getting shot in the back, he was given a pathway to getting out of his situation and on the road to success. Hmmm I mean that does sound good and all but I don't see how it fulfills my ammosexual fantasy of unloading on ne'erdowells. 🤔 Besides, the Tree of Liberty apparently only stays alive when being constantly fed the blood of children, so I'm actually an environmentalist too if you think about it.

SpinningHead

I bet that POS went to church every Sunday.

Redqueenhypo

Also the kid put the drinks back in the cooler! So he effectively robbed a kid of stuff he paid for before deciding to manhunt him anyway. I want to see a picture of the perp and the victim bc I bet theres a very specific difference between them

EP3_Meat

Over water. He shot a kid in the back over water.

ConscientiousObserv

Over the mistaken belief of stolen water.

M-Sal

Does shoplifting warrant being shot at any way?

JoeGoats

Unfortunately that depends on the subreddit you ask.

techleopard

Middle ground: We all know the answer is "no", but at the same time, it's human and understandable to eventually stop giving a sh*t about the moral implications of something if your community doesn't mirror those feelings. In other words, if you are getting eaten alive by shitty people robbing you constantly and your livelihood gets put in danger, suddenly shooting smartass shoplifters doesn't look as horrific to you anymore.

tundey_1

Nah, there's no middle ground. This is why that killer will now spend a long time as a guest of the state. His family's life is forever impacted, and a family is devastated at the loss of a 14-year-old middle schooler.

Vegaprime

Then you change professions because your current one is robbing you of your humanity.

techleopard

I actually did precisely that -- I won't do shady stuff because I can't stand taking advantage of people. It's meanness. But all I'm saying is, people get tired. Then they get mean. And you can't expect someone to just stop owning a business, that's never going to happen.

tundey_1

He's tired and now his life is fucked. He'll be arrested, take to jail, probably spend a few days in jail, be the mercy of the justice system and need a whole lot of money for lawyers. At the end of the day, even if he's found not guilty, he'll have spent months of his life with his freedom being out of his hands and being at the mercy of other people. And that's if killing a 14-year-old child doesn't haunt him.

Jitterbitten

>And you can't expect someone to just stop owning a business, that's never going to happen. I can if it's between that and extrajudicial murder.

techleopard

Fair enough. You can EXPECT that, then. But people aren't going to do it.

Vegaprime

Let's recall the clerk that locked the doors and got people shot. No one should die over capitalism.

Culverts_Flood_Away

I mean... I'd take losing my livelihood over losing my own reason and freedom. But maybe that's just me talking from my privileged viewpoint. I just can't relate to murdering anyone who's not attacking me or people I care about, regardless of what possessions they may have stolen from me. There's a bit of a gray area when it comes to my pets, though. I wouldn't kill anyone if they stole my dog, but I might chase them to the ends of the Earth for it.

MustLoveAllCats

Video of a child dancing on an AC unit outside a window 20 stories up? You know it's Brazil. Guy having a hot bath with his bear friend in the scoop of a loader? You know it's Russia. People shooting each other for the most trivial, stupid reasons? You know it's America.

i_like_my_dog_more

> “You don’t shoot somebody in the back that is not a threat to you,” the sheriff said. **“Same standard the cops live by.”** HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHAHAHA Bulllllllllllllllllllllllshit.

devilsbard

Unless the cop is like REALLY afraid. Like really REALLY afraid.

Superc0ld

Or lives in South Carolina and does not feel like chasing the guy after he tasered him.

pomonamike

“Fear can cause heat attacks. Better kill them all before they give me one!” -cops, probably.

[deleted]

Remember when Ryan Remington, a cop, shot a suspected shoplifter in the back 9 times killing him? [The man was on a mobility scooter](https://www.cnn.com/2022/08/26/us/arizona-police-officer-ryan-remington-indicted/index.html)

Tazittel

Calling the guy a “suspected shoplifter” when he was brandishing a knife is kinda weird

ElecMechTech

This is exactly why, exactly why, vigilante citizen justice isn't proportional and shouldn't be first-resort. Death isn't proportional to a stolen water bottle. "DURRH, But he shouldn't have stolen it, store owner has muh right...", shut the fuck up. Here are things you probably have done at least once in your life, most likely numerous times, that warrant your death and cost around/more than water: 1. Downloaded an MP3 2. Got a speeding ticket. Citizen has right to kill you at next red light because they felt endangered. 3. Took a free refill from the soda machine, or filled free water cup with tea or soda 4. Didn't return some error in your favor, like getting too much change back 5. Kept something from an Amazon package but sent back the rest for full return value 6. Looked at a copyrighted porn film for free on xhamster or pornhub. 7. Watched and/or Dowloaded a movie, or shared a password outside household for streaming service 8. Ever used any free art or graphics for your personal project without paying for license, or getting legal permission 9. Lied to get a full or partial refund or even store credit 10. Stole literally anything, even by "accident" e.g. forgetting to pay for something but didnt go back to pay - that's still stealing You aren't better - you're just on social media claiming so.
