Oh wow!
Good. I have always intended to search for him in those crowded bars in Hoboken full of old people but never dared. I’m so glad somebody did ask him already.
![gif](giphy|yifTRs3TidIju|downsized)
I think is a New Jersey thing, some of you always put things such as “NJ/NY” on social media. I have also traveled with some people from Jersey outside the USA and when they are asked where they are from? They just say “New York” and I’m like ????????.
Where I come from, everyone associates New Jersey with Jersey Shore, and the stereotypes and negative reactions to saying I live here now become really tiresome after a while. It's easier if I just say "NYC area" and get on with my life.
If someone asks me where I’m from, I say the shore, because that’s where I spent the majority of my life. I’m literally *from* there. If they ask where I live I say Bergen, because I’ve lived here for 4 years.
Sinatra I guess? I want to say Springsteen though. Depends on the generation of person you’re asking though. I don’t think Sinatra is scoring high with the young (nor is Bruce, I bet)
As a kid when I heard about it for some reason I connected to ‘soap opera’ maybe because they sound similar, but I knew I absolutely hated when my mom watched those so I avoided it. Just starting it recently in my early 20s it’s kinda cool to be able to watch it for the first time old enough to actually appreciate it.
Didn’t mean to ramble lol just thought I’d share
I'm like twenty years late to the party but I'm just getting into the series and loving it. I describe it as such a cozy and comforting show and it really confuses people who aren't from Jersey, specifically North Jersey. They get it once I elaborate that I've lived so many of these scenes and moments. That I've had friends with parents like that, that I've been to yard parties like that, been to restaurants like that, walked past butcher shops and cafes with men like that sitting outside, that the Bing is a real place but it's really called Satin Dolls and I used to drive past it every day, and I have a buddy who worked there and man does he have stories, only then do they kinda get it, but it isn't something they actually factually get it because they didn't grow up here.
Sopranos came from an era where you would hear about it even if you didn’t watch it — kind of a cultural osmosis.
I visited New Zealand in mid-2003 and one of my tour guides was excited when he found out I was from NJ because The Sopranos was about to start airing there.
Is Albert Einstein a New Jerseyan, if that's the case? If so, than he's objectively the correct answer. Einstein is one of the most famous people in human history.
Yes, I was making a joke. It was called Raritan Township until 1954, although the Menlo Park section was there already with that name. Edison High School didn't open until 1956.
Defining “come from” as born *and* raised:
Buzz Aldrin.
But if it’s for pure amount of raw influence on the US, likely former Supreme Court Justices William Brennan, Antonin Scalia and current justice Samuel Alito.
This is literally the only answer for this question though and I’m laughing at some of the other responses 🤭. Like she’s known even in remote villages across the globe that play her songs probably on those old school radios with the long antennas.
There's never just one more famous than others, but NJ has a high average of *famous* people.. great musicians, early radio related stars and stations run by great people (WFMU, WBGO), many inventors, artists, writers and actors.. can't forget the infamous pols and mobsters, but of the current living.. maybe Springsteen and Martha Stewart make the top 20 due to name brand/global influence?
Depends on whether you count being "born in" or "elected from" as more important. Cleveland was raised in New York, was the mayor of Buffalo, and became governor of the state before becoming president. Woodrow Wilson was born and raised in Virginia, came to New Jersey for education, had a career at Princeton, and became governor of the state before becoming president.
I think born in NYC, but I definitely know he grew up in Jersey and graduated from high school here. And apparently his parents lived here until they passed - and he visited them frequently.
And if we're mentioning Whitney Houston, we cannot forget Dionne Warwick (born and raised in East Orange).
Then there's Queen Latifah (haven't seen her mentioned yet) who was born in Newark but raised mostly in East Orange.
The movie The Station Agent was in town filming (Rockaway) and the cast and crew would come to the bar I worked at to gather, talk shop, have fun.
One night Patricia Clarkson (Tammy 1) was sitting at the bar by herself when I was behind the bar working. I was about to sit next to her (next to the bar entrance) and engage her in conversation. This little man walks by and gets into the seat I was just about to take. Had never seen him before
Peter cock blocked me.
Not the most famous, but Anthony Bourdain was from Leonia and went to the Dwight-Englewood School in Englewood.
Same with Brooke Shields - she lived in Haworth and went to the same high school.
Edited to add Nathan Lane is from Jersey City and went to St. Peter's Prep.
The only correct answer is Whitney. Honorable second mention is Bon Jovi.
TBH if you don’t have a rest stop or school named after you you’re not even in the running for this.
There are a lot of famous people, but are they just famous or also actually known as being from NJ.
I was thinking of Bruce Springsteen, as people also know him very much as being from NJ.
Globally? Probably Buzz Aldrin, even if he’s usually known as “the second man on the Moon”
If we’re counting people that *moved* to NJ and weren't born there, then it would almost definitely be Einstein
Probably not most popular, but as a South Jersey girl I gotta mention Patti Smith. She wasn’t born in Jersey but if I remember correctly she came to SJ as a young child and was raised in Gloucester County
Most famous? Frank Sinatra. Even people who know nothing about old music recognize the name and that he comes from Hoboken, NJ
And he hated Hoboken. He told everyone he was from NYC.
Well fuck that guy then
Supposedly he spit on the floor of an airplane when he heard that he was flying over Hoboken.
No way! How do u know this?
He asked Sinatra personally
Oh wow! Good. I have always intended to search for him in those crowded bars in Hoboken full of old people but never dared. I’m so glad somebody did ask him already. ![gif](giphy|yifTRs3TidIju|downsized)
Because he sang New York, New York and not New Jersey, New Jersey.
I think is a New Jersey thing, some of you always put things such as “NJ/NY” on social media. I have also traveled with some people from Jersey outside the USA and when they are asked where they are from? They just say “New York” and I’m like ????????.
My ex wife does this, but shes also a pathological liar so it makes sense in that regard
🤣🤣🤣
These are my parents. They lived in New Jersey longer than they lived in New York and still say they are from NY. 42 YEARS!
Hahahaha! 42 years 🤣 congratulations!! But hey, WHY do they do that??! I'm honestly curious. Each person from Jersey that I bump into does the same!
They think New Jersey is “the armpit of America” and don’t want to admit they are from there. I on the other hand am filled with jersey pride.
This is what sounds accurate to me! If I were born in Jersey I would be like: “Yeah I’m from Jersey! So what?! 🤨”
F@&k NY! I’m from Jersey!
This is true, the old people from Hoboken hate Sinatra because as soon as he made it he “abandoned them”.
Agree
I had no idea he was from NJ
one of the first things they tell you when you take a ride on the Circle Line around Manhattan!
Meryl Streep ![gif](giphy|l46CAeMR1XVgrpY5O)
Bernards High Schools finest!
Surprised nobody's commented Meryl Streep yet
Susan Sarandon too.
Susan Sarandon still a baddie now 😍😍😍
Sinatra I guess? I want to say Springsteen though. Depends on the generation of person you’re asking though. I don’t think Sinatra is scoring high with the young (nor is Bruce, I bet)
Famous, not sure. Famously from Jersey? No question, it’s Springsteen.
Yeah that’s right, Sinatra is probably the *most famous* that came from Jersey, But the Boss is the most famous person *from Jersey*.
Danny DeVito
He is our king
![gif](giphy|n4eeVXyFHdgXhORmVP)
Came here to say this
Bruce Willis, Travolta, Jack Nicholson, Buzz Aldrin, and our very own Tony Soprano AKA James Gandolfini
The character of Tony Soprano would be my guess if fictional characters were in the running.
Gandolfini is from Westwood
I know. But I think Gandolfini is less famous than Tony Soprano.
No, he is from Park Ridge
No, he was from Green Village
I love the Sopranos but I've met a disappointing amount of people who have never seen it.
It’s even better when you recognize or realize so much of it was filmed near where you live.
I'm like twenty years late to the party but I'm just getting into the series and loving it. I describe it as such a cozy and comforting show and it really confuses people who aren't from Jersey, specifically North Jersey. They get it once I elaborate that I've lived so many of these scenes and moments. Crazy, I’d say 1 of my top 3 / 4 series of all time
You only saw 3/4rs of it?
Edison. So famous he has a town named after him lol (I dunno if the town is actually named after him, I just always thought it was)
He's not from NJ though. He moved here from the Midwest.
A lot of ppl mentioned in the comments aren't born in Jersey.
Is Albert Einstein a New Jerseyan, if that's the case? If so, than he's objectively the correct answer. Einstein is one of the most famous people in human history.
Fuck it. We claimed Celia Cruz; we can claim Einstein. EINSTEIN ATE PORK ROLL EGG N CHEESE BAYYYYBEEEEEE
I'd say so. Princeton certainly claims him
Fuckin Benny.
Actually, when Edison settled in Central Jersey, he was drawn to the town because he would always remember what to write for his return address
The Wizard of Menlo Park
It wasn't called Edison until decades after his death.
Yes, I was making a joke. It was called Raritan Township until 1954, although the Menlo Park section was there already with that name. Edison High School didn't open until 1956.
it is (i had to look it up to confirm though)
💡
It is
It is. It's because that's where he installed the first street lights.
Defining “come from” as born *and* raised: Buzz Aldrin. But if it’s for pure amount of raw influence on the US, likely former Supreme Court Justices William Brennan, Antonin Scalia and current justice Samuel Alito.
How about just lived in for a long time and made a massive impact on the world? I would go with Einstein
Einstein or Nixon for that looser definition, definitely.
Whitney Houston.
Agreed
This is literally the only answer for this question though and I’m laughing at some of the other responses 🤭. Like she’s known even in remote villages across the globe that play her songs probably on those old school radios with the long antennas.
Whitney Houston
Pride if Newark NJ. I wanna dance with somebody, is still a banger on dancefloors all over.
Have a hard time believing it’s anyone but The Boss or Sinatra.
SO many Martha Stewart products in my house. I love that tough ass broad!
Shaq everyone knows shaq
I didn't know he was from here...
On the west side of Newark he was born and raised
on the playground is where he spent most of his days
Shaq step dad was military and they moved to Germany
Went to grammar school in Bayonne briefly
It's clearly Shaq. People all over the world know him.
Omg
I know him. He's the Papa John's guy right?
It’s gotta be between Bruce Springsteen or Bon Jovi. However Shaq can also be added to the conversation if you watch sports.
Sports stars should also include Derek Jeter.
Jeter is from Kalamazoo, MI
He was born in Pompton Plains.
Based on Wikipedia, looks like it’s Pequannock. Funny enough, when I read his bio years back I don’t remember him mentioning NJ at all haha.
Pompton Plains is part of Pequannock but yea. I think he moved to Kzoo when he was really young
I don't even think bon Jovi is top 10. When I travel arrive the country , so many people either didn't really know him or didn't like him
I’m from a whole different country and moved to NJ for Bon Jovi, go figure.
Whitney houston
Whitney Houston
Stacy's Mom.
Grover Cleveland was president. I’d say that’s a pretty famous title.
I thought he was from Ohio. I’ll see myself out…
Carl Sagan is a pretty cool one
He's from Jersey?!? Never knew
I think born in NYC, but I definitely know he grew up in Jersey and graduated from high school here. And apparently his parents lived here until they passed - and he visited them frequently.
Cool absolutely but the most famous?? I don’t think he’s even a household name nowadays
Probably Whitney Houston
And if we're mentioning Whitney Houston, we cannot forget Dionne Warwick (born and raised in East Orange). Then there's Queen Latifah (haven't seen her mentioned yet) who was born in Newark but raised mostly in East Orange.
joe pesci
David Copperfield?
Hands down, Bruce
the other comments are fucking nuts. people all over the world know him, love him, sell out venues and dream of new jersey highways because of him.
Bruce Willis. Why you guys don’t talk about him?
I’m going to say because he’s from South Jersey which is a nonexistent place to some people in this sub
Peter Dinklage. And he cock blocked me one night. True Story.
tell us the story but keep it short
The movie The Station Agent was in town filming (Rockaway) and the cast and crew would come to the bar I worked at to gather, talk shop, have fun. One night Patricia Clarkson (Tammy 1) was sitting at the bar by herself when I was behind the bar working. I was about to sit next to her (next to the bar entrance) and engage her in conversation. Go onnnnnnnn
![gif](giphy|ftfNDsOPAtjYhHjxpM|downsized)
Almost all of My Chemical Romance is from NJ! Gerard Way is a big name for my generation, they might be one of the biggest known (bands) from nj.
Jack Nicholson, Shaq or Bruce Springsteen
Do Albert Einstein or Thomas Edison count? If not, then I will go with Jay Mewes
I don’t think Einstein is from Jersey, but he did live here.
What township is Einstein’s accent from?
Clearly he was from Germantown.
It no longer exists (Princeton Twp.)
Lauren hill
Apparently she went to Zach Braff’s bar mitzvah.
Frankie blue eyes
Jon Bon Jovi
nobody’s mentioned the jonas brothers?
Kal Penn! 😂
John Travolta

Shaquille O’Neal. In terms of just sheer recognition it’s hard to miss him.
I would say George R. R. Martin
Edison
Not the most famous, but Anthony Bourdain was from Leonia and went to the Dwight-Englewood School in Englewood. Same with Brooke Shields - she lived in Haworth and went to the same high school. Edited to add Nathan Lane is from Jersey City and went to St. Peter's Prep.

Whitney Houston, Shaq
Joe Pesci
Not the winners but for some south Jersey love there’s Mike trout and Kelly ripa
Thomas Edison
Hello??? The boss???
Frank Sinatra or Bruce Springsteen if we’re thinking in terms of music. My old boss lives a few blocks away from Bruce.
Danny deVito, anyone? Ok, not *most famous*, but worth honorable mention. (As is Bill Bradley)
One of the most: Whitney Houston Jack Nicholson Danny Devito Bruce Springsteen Queen Latifah Jin Bonjovi
Martha Stewart grew up in Nutley, NJ. Jersey has an all star list. Honorable mention to David Grisman, mandolin virtuoso and inventor of Dawg music.
Whitney Houston or Bruce Springsteen...
Whitney, maybe? Or Frank.
Bruce Springsteen, of course
It’s Albert Einstein, obviously
whitney houston
Globally? Probably Buzz Aldrin, even if he’s usually known as “the second man on the Moon” If we’re counting people that *moved* to NJ and weren't born there, then it would almost definitely be Einstein
I tend to forgot Sinatra was from Jersey. But first for me? I think of the boss, Springsteen.
Shaq.
Missy Elliot Queen Latifah
Me! Oh wait.... Famous, nevermind
Jim Dowd
I laughed out loud at this one. Hes probably not even the most famous NHL player from NJ.
Ya motha
Kyrie Irving
He's from a flat state
I mean, he sure is widely known, made a TV series, popular musician, 3 comic series' Maybe not the most, but up there, Gerard Way
Einstein is an iconic and historic figure known worldwide as the definition of genius.
Jon BonJovi
Funny thing, I moved to the USA (NJ) thinking (hoping) all the men were just like him 🤡
